I always prided myself on being a wise shopper and having a good nose for bargains. So when I came across a sporting goods store with a sign "Going Out of Business Sale", I marched into the crowded store. Up and down the aisles (通道), I wandered, humming to myself and enjoying the energy and excitement of a sale.

All of a sudden, there, at the back of the store sat a canoe(轻舟) exactly like my husband's dream Supremo Numero-Uno, whose picture had been stuck on the bathroom mirror for years. My heart beat wildly. I pushed my way through the crowds, and nearly fell into the canoe looking for the price tag. There it was, with the manufacturer's suggested price at $6,750 plus tax crossed out and a handwritten TO CLEAR $750 AS IS. Must be a mistake. $6000 off? Salesman. I had to talk to a salesman. I spotted a young fellow with a "Hi. I'm Mathew". "Mathew, tell me about this El Supremo canoe. What's wrong with it? Why is it only $750?"

"Oh. There's nothing wrong with it. It's brand new. We're closing the store. It's on clearance like everything else. I'll go check." A few minutes later he came back and said, "I'm sorry ma'am. Someone made a mistake on the sale tag. It should be $4,750 for the whole package."

I felt tears well up in my eyes. "Oh well", I said sadly. "Of course, it was too good to be true. This is exactly like my husband's dreamboat. I guess I started to dream myself when I saw that price tag. He's going to be 62 years old Friday. Had to retire early for his health. It's been hard on just the pension but the stubborn old fool has been saving $10 every week for years to buy one just like this. I promise I won't buy anything, but it's just an old man's silly dream, you know. Always said he wanted to fish in a canoe after he retired," my voice lowered and I turned and walked away.

'Usual boring day!' This would be the answer from Roman if somebody asked him how his day was. These days he found everything boring, nothing excited him.

One day he was lying in his room as usual. Suddenly light went off. His room was rather hot without an air conditioner. Though he did not want to leave his room, he had to. Unwillingly, he left his room and came to living room. Living room was slightly cool as it had two huge windows.

His young brother was playing with his friend. They were rolling on the floor. He was looking out for the TV remote, but couldn't find. He got up and searched it everywhere, but remote was nowhere. He looked at his brother who was still lying on the floor playing.

He asked him, "Where is the remote?" "Under the Sofa," his brother yelled.

He tried to look through, but it was dark. He put his hand under the sofa. He touched something, grabbed it and took his hand out. OMG! It was a snake in his hand!

After seeing that his brother started to yell," Snake, snake!" Mom came as soon as she heard their shouting. She too was horrified to see a snake. She was so scared that she even couldn't speak a word. Two kids were trying to hide into each other's back. "What an old trick!" Roman thought and threw it over kids.

As the snake landed on the floor near to the kids, it started moving from left side to the right. Only then did Roman realize that the snake was real, not a toy. He threw the snake over kids because he thought it was a fake snake and kids were playing some tricks.

This time mom almost got heart attack. Now he was scared too. The snake was only 10 meters away from kids and was staring at kids. They even couldn't call a rescue team. There might be some deadly damage before their arrival. There was not much time to think. It was the time for a quick action.

Paragraph 1:

As Roman was farther from the snake, he jumped to the window and grabbed the curtain.

Paragraph 2:

After the rescue team caught and took the snake away, everyone went inside the home.

Elizabeth walked to the yard, carrying a bunch of daisies (雏菊)

Beautiful flowers for. for... Oh. I'll never get it right!" she cried, throwing the daisies on the ground. She had been practising her speech for a week.

Part of her couldn't wait. This Saturday, the great Ana Wolff, famous pianist, would perform at the concert hall in town. For four years, Elizabeth had listened to Ms Wolffs recordings over and over again, loving the way the notes flowed like a rushing mountain stream.

Part of Elizabeth was terrified. Her music teacher at school, Mr. Leaf, had asked her to present the flowers to Ms Wolff after the performance. But Elizabeth knew herself well. She had severe stage fright and she really hated it when she had to talk in front of people. Even so, Elizabeth was determined to take the challenge this time.

"How's the speech going?" asked Elizabeth's mother. "Want to practice on me?"

"No, thanks." said Elizabeth. "Mum, I can't do this! I'll forget. I might even pass out!"

"Oh, honey. Think about it… sharing the stage with Ana Wolff. What an honour!" Mum gently comforted her.

Elizabeth kept practising. "Beautiful flowers for… for a beautiful performance…" She presented the flowers to the cat, the dog, even the statue in the garden.

Soon it was Saturday night, Elizabeth stood at the backstage, behind the heavy black curtains. Holding the bouquet (花束) of red roses, she felt her heart racing wildly and her stomach tightened with nervousness.

The lights dimmed, and Ms Wolff began her performance. She swayed and nodded with her fingers dancing across the keys. Soft sad parts, loud angry parts, parts that sounded fun to play, Drawn into the music, Elizabeth forgot for a moment about the six words she had to say. With a flourish, Ms Wolff played her final note. Applause thundered through the hall. People jumped to their feet and cheered.

Ms. Wolff smiled and bowed. Then she walked off stage and into the wings. Almost immediately, she returned to the stage for a second bow.

I grew up in a small town where elementary school was a ten-minute walk from my house and in an age, not so long ago, when we children could go home for lunch and find our mothers waiting. At the time, I didn't consider this to be so important, although today it certainly would be. Actually, our lunch time together in the past years had had a great influence on my life before I realized it.

Our lunch time when I was in the third grade will stay with me always. I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had painstakingly practiced my lines (台词) with me. But no matter how easily I delivered them at home, as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained patiently that she needed a narrator and had written a narrator's part to the play, and asked me to play the role of the narrator. Her words, kindly delivered, still hurt me especially when I saw my part go to another girl.

I didn't tell mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed my upset, and instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard. It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine (藤) was turning green. Under the huge trees, we could see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) appearing unexpectedly through the grass in bunches, as if a painter had touched our landscape with small amounts of gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one of the bushes. "I think I'm going to dig up all these weeds," she said, pulling a blossom up by all its roots. "From now on, we'll only have roses in this garden.'' I immediately argued, "But I like dandelions. All flowers are beautiful — even dandelions."

A few years ago, I had taken a part-time job in a video store at the local shopping mall. From inside the store, I'd begun to see the people rushing by outside. Then an elderly woman caught my eye. Although slow and unsure of step, she moved with deliberation(从容). The elderly woman had come into the store along with a younger woman who I guessed was her daughter. The daughter was clearly impatient, checking her watch every few seconds.

The older woman then separated from the younger one and began to tick through the DVDs on the nearest shelf, obviously expecting someone else to help. After the slightest hesitation, I walked over and asked if I could help her find something. The woman smiled up at me and showed me a title scrawled(乱涂乱画的)on a piece of paper. It was a bit unclear to make out. Clearly a person looking for it knew a little about movies, about quality. Rather than rushing off to locate the DVD for the woman, I asked her to walk with me so I could show her where she could find it.

Looking back, I think I wanted to enjoy her company for a moment. Something about her deliberate movements reminded me of my own mother, who'd passed away the previous Christmas. As we walked along the back of the store, I introduced her to the different sections: old television shows, action movies, cartoons, science fiction. The woman seemed glad of the unrushed company and casual conversation.

We found the movie, and I complimented her on her choice. She smiled and told me it was one she'd enjoyed when she was her daughter's age and that she hoped she would enjoy it as much as she had. Maybe, she said with a hint of wistfulness (一丝渴望), her daughter could enjoy it with her own young children. Then, when the older woman's turn in line came, she paid in cash, counting out the dollars and coins with the same sureness she'd displayed earlier.

It was the hottest time of the year in southern California. Steve, a star basketball player at the University of California, with his cousin Zach, had planned a camping trip in the Great National Forest for their summer vacation.

The boys packed clothes and supplies into a bag, and began their great adventure with the dog Brady early in the morning. Upon arrival, Steve pulled over to the side of the road along the bank of the river. "A wonderful place for fishing," Steve exclaimed in delight. Zach nodded in agreement.

At high noon, the sun was scorching hot. With a good harvest of fish, the boys marched into the forest with Brady following them. After a long walk, they found a clearing that was ideal for a campsite (野营地). The camp was set up immediately as Steve knew all the tricks of an experienced wilderness camper. An afternoon nap was absolutely a special treat in mid-summer. However, the boys were waken up by the fierce barks of Brady. Outside, heavy smoke filled the air and wind-blown flame was skipping from the top of one tree to another. The long dry summer turned the forest into a tinderbox. In a little while, Steve and Zach were inside their tent packing their belongings.

"Let's go! We can make it back to the river!" They headed down against the fire-wind in the direction of the river. But Brady barked a sharp warning. Ahead of them lay a thick curtain of smoke across the track. They would never make it through that. Steve was uneasy for it was hard to find a safe way to escape in the heavy smoke.

Brady lifted his head and sniffed the smoke-laden wind. Next moment, the dog bounded away and disappeared down a sharp slope. The boys shouted for him, but he didn't come back. Steve couldn't blame Brady for panicking. He himself wanted to run even though he didn't have a clue which way.

Scout could clearly remember the night she had to leave her home in Poland. It was the beginning of World War II and her family had to escape as soon as possible. She quickly packed a suitcase with a few pieces of clothing, her diary, and her most prized treasure, a silk scarf. Scout and her best friend, Betty, had persuaded their parents to buy them matching scarves, which they took as a symbol of their friendship. Scout didn't know she was going to America and would not be returning.

Scout kept that special silk scarf for many years. One day she decided to give it to her granddaughter, Eliza, to wear to her first job interview for good luck. Scout was afraid that Eliza would lose the scarf, but the granddaughter promised, "Don't worry, Grandma, nothing's going to happen to your scarf. You'll see that it's going to bring both of us luck." And with that, Eliza kissed her grandmother and left for the interview.

Leaving the interview, Eliza felt confident that she had got the job so she decided to celebrate by going to a restaurant. Sitting at her table, Eliza felt an elderly woman staring at her for a long time.

"I'm sorry. Do I know you?" Eliza asked.

"I'm sorry, dear, but you remind me of my best friend," the old woman replied. "She looked like you and used to wear a scarf just like yours." Eliza listened carefully, with her eyes and mouth wide open. She had heard stories of her grandmother's best friend and knew the meaning of the scarf. Could this woman be Betty, her grandmother's childhood friend?

It was my first year of school. I loved school: my old-fashioned kind of teacher, Miss Edna; the way the old wooden floors smelled; and having my own desk that was just my size. There was, however, one problem with school—Mildred.

Daily when I walked the short distance home after school, Mildred would taunt(奚落)me, hit me and scare me. I was absolutely terrified of her. She had failed first grade and was a year older than me. Mildred didn't have friends, so she seemed to concentrate on making enemies. Because I was one of the smallest children in first grade, she had selected me as her number one enemy.

As I walked home after school, she would continually step on the back of the heels of my shoes and cause the shoes to slide down. Then when I stopped to adjust them, she would slap me hard on the back. As soon as the dismissal bell rang each day, my heart started to pound and I blinked fast so I wouldn't cry.

Pretty soon my mother figured out something was wrong at school and I finally sobbed out the whole story. "You can't do anything, mama. You can't. Everyone will think I'm a baby."

It was impossible for mother to pick me up after school. She had to work. My father had died a few years earlier. I didn't have any sisters or brothers to watch after me. I couldn't imagine what my mother might do. I was certain there was no answer-no answer at all for a problem this big. I just begged not to go to school.

The next morning, my mother said, Marion, I'm going to walk up the hill with you today. I believe we'll see Mildred." Mildred walked from way across town to school. She never bothered me on the way to school, only afterward.

"Oh, mama, please don't do that! It will make her mad. Let me stay home by myself. Please, mama."

"Trust me, Marion. I have a plan."

The family had just moved to Rhode Island, and the young woman was feeling a little sad on that Sunday in May. After all, it was Mother's Day-and 800 miles separated her from her parents in Ohio.

She had called her mother that morning to wish her a happy Mother's Day, and her mother had mentioned how colorful the yard was now that spring had arrived. As they talked, the younger woman could almost smell the fragrance (香味) of purple lilacs (紫丁香) hanging on the big bush outside her parents' back door. Later, when she mentioned to her husband how she missed those lilacs, he popped up from his chair. “I know where we can find all you want," he said.

So off they went, driving the country roads of northern Rhode Island on the kind of day only mid-may can produce: warm sunshine, unclouded blue skies and vibrant (充满生机的) newness of the green and growing all around.

Before they got halfway up the hill, the fragrance of the lilacs drifted down to them, and the kids started running. Soon, the mother began running, too, until she reached the top. With a smile, the young woman rushed up to the nearest bush and buried her face in the flowers, drinking in the fragrance and the memories it brought back. Carefully, she chose a sprig (小枝) here, another one there. Finally, though, they returned their car for the trip home. While the kids chattered and the man drove, the woman sat smiling, surrounded by her flowers, a faraway look in her eyes.

When they were within three miles for home, she suddenly shouted to her husband, “Stop the car. Stop right here!" The man slammed on the brakes (刹车). Before he could ask her why she wanted to stop, the woman was out of the car and hurrying up a nearby grassy slope (斜坡) with the lilacs still in her arms.

At the top of the hill was a nursing home and, because it was such a beautiful spring day, the patients were outdoors strolling with relatives or sitting on the porch. Among them was an elderly lady, sitting in her wheelchair alone, head bowed, her back to most of the others.

Her name was Mrs Thompson. And as she stood in front of the 5th grade class on the very first day she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same. But that was impossible because there in the front row was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard. Mrs Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he didn't play well with the other children, that his clothes were messy and that he constantly needed a bath. She paid no attention to Teddy.

However, when she read his file, she was in surprise. Teddy's first grade teacher wrote, “Teddy is a bright child with a ready laugh. He does his work neatly and has good manners…he is the joy to be around. ”His second grade teacher wrote, “Teddy is an excellent student, well liked by his classmates. But he is troubled because his mother has a deadly illness and life at home must be a struggle. ”His third grade teacher wrote, “His mother's death has been hard on him. He tried to do his best but his father doesn't show much interest. ”Teddy's fourth grade teacher wrote, “Teddy is withdrawn and doesn't show much interest in school. He doesn't have many friends and sometimes sleeps in class. ” By now, Mrs Thompson realized the problem and she was ashamed of herself. She thought that she could make a difference.

She felt even worse when her students brought her Christmas presents, wrapped in beautiful paper and tied with pretty ribbons, except for Teddy's. His present was clumsily wrapped in the heavy, brown paper that he got from a grocery bag. Mrs Thompson opened it in the middle of the other presents. Some of the children started to laugh when she found a stone bracelet(手镯)with some of the stones missing, and a bottle that was one-quarter full of perfume.

Paragraph 1:

Mrs Thompson, whose voice choked up with tears, thanked her students for their presents.

Paragraph 2:

Ten years later, Teddy invited Mrs Thompson to attend his wedding as his mother.

Sam Watts was a 37-year-old fisherman living and working in Canada. One day, Sam planned to head out into the Pacific at 9 am and work straight through until 5pm the next day. Joining Sam would be his crewman, 24-year-old Tom Buck.

Although Sam had been warned that a storm was coming, there was little that would keep him from going. As he sailed through the waves some 120 kilometers from land, Sam let out his three-kilometer-long fishing line. The storm was gaining strength on land but had yet to reach the men far offshore. That changed around 1 am. Waves rocked the small boat, which began to turn sideways like an amusement park ride. "Get us out of here! "Tom screamed to Sam. "Let's go back! "

With the winds and waves kicking up, the boat began to fill with water. Sam and Tom tried to pull in the fishing line together, but the high waves filled the boat with water, forcing Sam to make a hard decision. He cut the line, losing thousands of dollars' worth of equipment and fish in the sea. He then pointed the boat toward a port five hours away. Sam then called his boss, William Fox, to report his position.

With dawn coming, Sam spotted the rise of the mountains on the horizon. He was figuring out a route through the dangerous waters when suddenly the motor stopped. "I couldn't believe it, "Sam said. "We were 24 kilometers off the coast, and the motor died. "High waves raised and dropped the boat, sending the men crashing into the sides. "William, William! "Sam yelled into the radio. "If you're coming to get me, come now! "

"We're coming! " William shouted back.

Shortly after, the radio died and the wind continued to blow straight offshore, driving the men farther out to sea.

The next morning, Sam spotted a fishing boat in the distance.

Though it is one of the faded memories of my life today, there are times when I remember his face clearly, especially his eyes. As he had yellow spots on his eyes we called him Spotty. He would have been a stray(流浪) dog, until he came to me.

I was seven years old. My dad had just got a new job in Nasik. We had moved into a rented house. It was raining very heavily on the day we moved.

It was a cold dark night. We had our meal and went to sleep. Somehow in the midnight I heard some strange sounds outside the main door. I gathered courage and looked out through the window and I was really amused with what I saw outside.

There was a small puppy lying on an old doormat which my mother had put outside the door. It was wet and trembling. At first it was difficult to see the little one. It was the yellow spots on its eyes that made me realize its presence.

It was trying to get under the doormat to avoid the cold air outside and it had managed to get in as I could see only its head outside the doormat. Was it sick or injured?

I felt pity for the poor soul. I went in and came out with an old towel. I went near the innocent one and held it in my hand and wiped the puppy till he had become dry. I took him into my room and made a bed for him with a woolen blanket and a small pillow. He seemed very healthy and comfortable in his new bed as he went to sleep immediately.

The next morning, everyone in the family came to know about the unusual guest. "Shall we keep him with us?" I questioned my mom.

Like any other parents would, my parents first totally refused my idea but my sister and I convinced them to keep Spotty.

Slowly Spotty got on with everyone and became one of the family members.

Paragraph 1:

One day, Spotty returned from his daily walk with a broken leg.

Paragraph 2:

Almost a year later, one midnight we heard Spotty barking breathlessly

Sedona hiking trails can be fun and relaxing, but sometimes can also be challenging and dangerous.

Rogers, 33, an on-duty airman, was in town from Colorado Springs for adventures on Sedona trails. Even he had just taken a sharp turn on his mountain bike in April 2020 when he was stopped short by the sight of a woman sitting on the side of the trail. She was cute and had long blond hair and big expressive eyes. What he didn't know then was that she was also in extreme pain.

Sydney Linden, 28, had been jogging down Adobe Jack Trail in Sedona, Arizona, for a picturesque sunset view of the Red Rocks when she hopped over a rock and her leg over extended on the landing. The pain was instant.

Her right leg collapsed and she hit the dirt hard. Linden tried to stand but collapsed. She wasn't sure if she had torn her ACL(十字韧带), broken her leg, or something else. All she knew was that the pain was a 15 out of 10.

Although it was spring, the Arizona sun beat down relentlessly(无情地). Linden dragged herself to the shade, as if an animal preparing to die. She'd called a friend, but after 30 minutes, her friend was lost. That's when she saw the mountain biker.

Rogers was trying to play it cool. He casually rode by at a slower speed, stealing a glance at the woman. Sensing her suffering, Rogers stopped and asked if he could help. Linden explained her situation and that's when he noticed the swelling under her leggings. She needed a hospital -- now.

Rogers helped Linden to her feet and they began the steep(陡坡)over the rocky region and desert bushes. It was a long way to go. Leaning on Rogers, Linden tried to hop along, but the pain was severe. She would never make it to the trailhead(登山口)this way.

Tom woke up early in the morning. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible. "Why are you in such a hurry, my early bird?" Mum asked him. "We will have an English spelling test today, Mum, "Tom said. "Mr. White promised to offer prizes to those who get 100 points. I've been studying the word list since last week. Although the words are difficult, I am well prepared for them. "

Tom reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when Dad drove him to school. At last, it was time for the students to have a test. "Responsibility," Mr. White started. Tom wrote it on his test paper quickly and confidently. "The second word: contribution," Mr. White said. "So easy," Tom thought. He quickly wrote the word down.

Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr. White. "I am to mark your papers now," he told the class. After marking the test papers, Mr. White said, "Three of you won a prize today for excellent test scores. Tom, David and Mary got 100 percent on the spelling test!"

Mr. White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary. Tom's was an English-Chinese dictionary-the one he like best. Tom was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered. "This is my happiest moment," Tom thought.

After Mr. White gave the test paper back, Tom had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word "contribution" confused him. It didn't seem right. Peter began to compare them after taking out the word list. "C-o-n-t-r-i-b-u-s-i-o-n," he whispered. He had spelled it wrong. "What am I to do?" Tom said to himself. "I expect my classmates to think I'm a master in spelling. If I tell Mr. White one of my spelling words is wrong, I'll have to give prize back, or I will become an example of telling a lie."

Staring at the red sign "100%" which was written on his test paper, Tom was lost in thought. After a while, he remembered a lesson Mum used to teach him, "We ought to be an honest person."

It's hard to talk to dads sometimes. The roles we often expect our fathers to play—protector, provider—can make them difficult to understand. That's how it was with my dad. He came to Canada at the age of ten and settled in an immigrant community. He was never much of a talker. He rarely drank. He didn't tell stories about himself at the dinner table or when we went for walks in the park. He was a private person and seemed to want to stay that way.

It seemed impossible to ask him questions about his early life before I was born—his early hopes and dreams, his loves and heartbreaks, let alone share my own feelings with him. I didn't want to threaten the integrity((完整)of his hard shell. I had gotten used to it, and it made me feel secure.

But when my relationship with my wife and career took a hit a year ago, things had to change. I was facing serious problems about my own nature, and I wanted to know whether he had faced them too, and I desperately needed to know how he had found his way, because I felt like I had lost mine.

In a severe moment of desperation, it occurred to me that sending an email might be the key. An email can be crafted slowly and carefully. He'd be up in his office—a comfortable place filled with bookshelves, dusty CD-ROMs and piles of old newspapers. I'd be at my desk in an apartment 20 minutes away. So I could speak at a comfortable distance and give him room to a just.

So I wrote to him. I told him about my regrets and fears, and I asked him to answer, if he felt like it, and to share something about himself, something that would give me much-needed perspective on my life, especially on relationship and career.

Two weeks later, his response showed up in my email box.

I closed the email and started to cry.

An A for Mrs. Bartlett

I was sitting next to Missy in my ninth-grade world history class when Mrs. Bartlett announced a new project. In groups, we were to create a poster around what we were studying.

On a piece of paper, we wrote the names of three friends we wanted in our group. After collecting all the requests, Mrs. Bartlett informed us that she would take into consideration the names we chose and would let us know the results the next day. I was a well-rounded top student in the class, so I had no doubt I would get the group of my choice. There were only a handful of sociably decent people in the class, and Missy was one of them. I knew we had chosen each other.

The next day, I anxiously awaited the class. After the bell rang, Missy and I stopped talking as Mrs. Bartlett called for our attention. She started to call out names. When she reached group three, Missy's name was called. So I'm in group three, I thought. The second, third and fourth members of the group were called. My name was not included. There had to be some mistake!

Then I heard it. The last group: "Mauro, Juliette, Rachel, Karina." I could feel the tears well in my eyes. How could I face being in that group — the boy who barely spoke English, the one girl who was always covered by skirts that went down to her ankles, and the other girl who was often wearing very strange and unusual clothes with fancy items. They certainly fell into the category of the least popular in our class. They were considered misfits (不合群的人)!

There must be something wrong! Mrs. Bartlett was such a person of insight, vision and thoughtfulness that she never forgot to bring out the potential of all her students. Oh, how badly I wanted to be with my friends. Finally I was determined to convince her I should be in the "good" group.
