The rest camp was in sight. Several huts made from brick settle across a large pool of water. The walls reflected the afternoon sun. My father, against my mother's advice, decided to drive through the pool of water that stretched across the dirt road.

Steve, a twelve-year-old boy with alcoholic parents, was about to be lost forever, by the U. S. education system. He could read, yet, in spite of his reading skills, Steve was failing. He had been falling since first grade. Steve was a big boy, looking more like a teenager than a twelve-year-old, yet, Steve went unnoticed…until Miss White came.
Miss White was a smiling, young, beautiful lady. For the first time in his young life, Steve couldn't take his eyes off his teacher, yet, still he failed.
In the middle of the first semester of school, the entire seventh grade was tested for basic skills. Steve hurried through his tests, and continued to dream of other things. His heart was not in school, but in the woods, where he often escaped alone camping there, trying to shut out the sights, sounds and smells of his alcoholic home. No one checked on him to see whether he was safe. No one knew he was gone, because no one cared. Strangely, Steve never missed a day of school.

Mother and I spent mornings cleaning up the dirt that blew into our house. Mother said all the dust was due to the drought, not only here in our village but all over the Great Plains.

"Like what?" he asked. "Well, like..." I began, making a face, "maybe broccoli (西兰花)." Joe laughed. Then he started clowning around, pretending that he was me eating broccoli. "Oh, oh," he groaned, scratching (挠痒) himself. "I itch (发痒) everywhere!"
When I got home, I smelled something delicious. "What smells so good, Mom?" I called out. My mother replied, "It's dinner. I found a new recipe I think you'll like." After setting the table, I called my younger brother and sister. We all sat down, and Mom spooned out the vegetable. When I saw what it was, shock set in, and I was speechless.
Mom said, "Luis, eat! It's broccoli with beans." I couldn't move. She said again, "Luis, eat. You know the rule."
Mom had the rule that we had to eat everything on our plate, or we couldn't have dessert, usually my favorite ice cream. I picked up my fork, took a tiny bit, and put it to my mouth. I put the fork down again. I thought of Joe's crazy act and started scratching myself—slowly at first and then faster and faster. My brother and sister looked at me suspiciously.
"Luis, what's going on?" Mom asked. I said, "Mom, I think I'm allergic to broccoli." "Really?" she asked. I nodded, and she studied me for a moment. Then she said, "I just read an article in a health magazine. It tells parents what to do when their kids show sudden allergies to broccoli. Let me get the cure."

Jose was a devoted teacher for a local high school in California. Unfortunately, with the money he earned, he couldn't support his family and extended family in Mexico and rent an apartment in California at the same time. Therefore, having failed to afford the rental of even a shoebox apartment, he had no choice but to live in his old car occasionally to make ends meet until he could find another place to live.
To make matters worse, he found himself living this unfortunate lifestyle after Covid -19 swept the world when California schools closed their doors following the outbreak. This left Jose with little means for making money. So at age 77, Jose ended up living inside of his car. For about two years he was homeless. Home was his car, and his car sat in a grocery store parking lot. During daytime he drove to different locations, looking for job opportunities while he spent most of his nights at the same parking lot, which gave him a sense of belonging.
At day time, he would lean his seat all the way back, so no one would see him because he knew he wasn't supposed to be there and worried the manager of the grocery store would drive him away. He was a man of self-respect and didn't want to turn to charity.
When Maggie, the manager of the grocery store did see Jose, she felt he looked familiar because she used to be in his class many years ago. She could still remember how Jose encouraged her to finish her education when she was struggling with her learning. She noticed Jose spent a considerable amount of time in his car, she suspected her teacher had fallen on hard times. She became determined to help her former teacher in his time of need. So, the former student decided to repay the favor and help her homeless teacher.

The next day after school, Steve went past the store, Sports Time. He loved to lok in the window at all the football equipment and other goods on the shelves. Steve went in and looked at the new football set he wanted.
"Hi, Steve," said Mrs. Thomas," what can I do for you today?"
"I want to see if there is a sale on that football set"
"I am afraid not," said Mrs. Thomas, "it is sill S60."
"I only have $10 saved, and my dad said if I could do something for the neighborhood, he would advance me the rest," said Steve, and he told her about the school football match.
