I received an urgent call from my aunt. " Turn on the TV. Granny's on the Channel 10 news. " It turned out that Granny had made a sandwich run for her office and was stopped at a red light downtown. She had the window rolled down to enjoy the breeze when a man rushed up to the driver's side window, intending to carjack (劫车)her.

Now, what the would-be carjacker couldn't have known was that this woman simply wasn't " a granny". This was Nancy Johnson — the same woman who owned and lived on a Texas cattle farm, drove her own tractors, and dug her own post holes to lay fence. The week before, she had shot a rattlesnake and chopped off its head with a shovel. She was the proud owner of the new minivan (小型货车)she was driving. In other words, she was not your normal kind of granny.

The carjacker leaned into the open window, one hand stuffed in his pocket, and said, " Get out of this car. I have a gun, and I will shoot you.” A statement like that would have terrified anyone else. Instead, Granny saw it as a challenge." If you really had a gun in your pocket, you would've pulled it out and led with that first," she shouted at him, apparently unworried.

She was right. The criminal didn't have a gun. He instead reached into the window, grabbed her, and tried to pull her out of the van. He pulled open the door, wildly catching Granny's arms. Granny leaned her shoulder inside to press the horn (喇叭) and started yelling to make people around notice what was happening. With the door now open, she held tight the steering wheel with one arm and started kicking the man anywhere her foot could make contact. This tall woman had quite a reach.

I'd just returned from the local hospital where I'd held my first grandchild in my arms for the first time. What a beautiful child! She was named after her grandmother, Betsy. How I wished that my wife were here to see the healthy baby of Grace, our only daughter.

I knew what Betsy would have wanted and expected me to do on this grand occasion of the birth of our granddaughter, so I beaded for her favorite department store to select as a gift for our daughter.

Shopping here would cause me to feel that Betsy was still with me and could share the joy of the birth of her first granddaughter.

There was a clerk, an attractive middle-aged woman with her name tag "JOY". Her fingers lingered over a pair of diamond earrings." How about these?" she said to an elderly man. He held them up. "Oh yes, these are very pretty, "he said. He then turned to me, "What do you think? Would these be a good anniversary gift for my wife?"

"They'll be a wonderful anniversary gift, "I said, and I wondered how many years he and his wife had been married. I thought of all the years Betsy and I had shared. "When your wife wears them, they'll remind her of your love."

"That's precisely what I want them to do, "he said, smiling.

Joy asked, "What anniversary will this be?" The old man's eyes sparkled as he answered, "You'll never guess." Joy then said, "Well, diamonds are traditionally given for the sixtieth anniversary."

"You're wrong, "he said. "It's our first anniversary!" Joy looked as surprised as I felt, as the man said, "I still can't believe my good fortune the second time around, finding someone as wonderful as my wife Helen.”

"Congratulations,” Joy said. "Your wife is lucky to have such a generous husband. The first anniversary is supposed to be a paper gift. "

"Do you think I should-or even could-ask Helen to wait 59 years for her diamonds?”

Joy's eyes opened wide, "Oh, I didn't mean-”

Last weekend, I went to Mark's new house nearby a forest for a little get-together. After lunch when I was chatting with him and his wife Cody, he asked me, “Hey Tom, have you ever ben to a secret spot?” Before I could even finish saying no, Cody and Mark were already at the door with their jackets on. And the next moment we were heading out into the forest with a camera, a fishingnet and a plastic bucket (桶) .

We walked through the forest along a path by a small river. Breathing the fresh air, we three talked and laughed all the way.

"Hey! What are you guys doing?" Someone suddenly shouted from behind. Mark and Cody's eyes immediately widened, and without a word they started running. I had no choice but to follow them, getting my shoes wet and dirty with mud. We probably ran for about 10 minutes before Mark and Cody slowed down. I stopped to catch my breath and asked. “Who was that?”

Mark replied, "The most annoying neighbor ever. If he caught up with us, there's no telling what could happen. He is always making fun of us. I dislike him." We kept walking on for a few more minutes. Then a beautiful lake appeared before our eyes. "Wow! Amazing!" I shouted and could hardly hold back my excitement. The lake was large and the water was deep and blue, looking so peaceful with tall trees around it.

Adam, Nick, and Tom were best friends. Five years after their graduation from college, Nick called Adam and Tom, inviting them to celebrate his birthday on his personal yacht (游艇). They got very excited.

It was a bright and sunny summer day. As Nick was studying the safety measures of the sea journey, he saw Adam and Tom coming towards his yacht. With huge hugs and smiles on every face, the three greeted each other in their usual way. “Thank you boys for coming and making my birthday even more special,” said Nick.

“But before getting started, hope you both know there is a danger zone at a particular point on this sea,” warned Adam.

“Don't worry. I will stay away from it. Now let the party begin!” Nick responded, starting to turn the steering wheel (方向盘) of the yacht.

Treating the friends on the beautiful white yacht sailing on the blue water was a perfect idea. They were having a wonderful time, talking, eating and joking. How time flew! It started getting dark.

“Hey guys! It's time to go back,” Tom shouted.

“Mr. Sailor, turn your ship's wheel and take us back home,” said Adam.

Little did they know they were going to encounter life-threatening challenges ahead. Unknowingly, Nick crossed the danger zone Adam had mentioned earlier. When realizing this, Nick decided to make a turn immediately. Unfortunately, a strange noise came from the engine and then the yacht stopped. Expert at mending machines, Adam offered to examine the engine and asked Nick to fetch the tool box. Nick was hurrying to get it when he slipped, falling into the sea water.

    “Nick!” Tom and Adam screamed.

Panicked, Nick started shouting for help. Tom rushed inside the yacht to get a life jacket to rescue Nick, but didn't find one. Instead, he found a long rope and out he rushed with it.

In 1989, fresh out of high school, I had the difficult task of choosing a career path before college started in three months. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited choices: becoming a doctor or an engineer, or entering the financial world after getting a business degree. I wasn't interested in engineering, so that I was left with medicine or business. I couldn't decide.

My uncle suggested that I do a work placement(实习) to experience a for a month in an international company followed by a month in a hospital. After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a good idea.

I was accepted for a month's placement at a foreign bank in Karachi. I got a feel for how the world of finance functioned, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easygoing work surroundings.

The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi. The experience couldn't have been more different. The hospital had a stressful environment. The days started early (at 7 am, compared to 9 am at the bank), and were filled with endless duties. And the night calls! This was erazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day.

I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing atmosphere, better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement, but the studying and training was difficult. It seemed that the business choice was going to win out.

Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after an especially busy night call. In front of me was a truck, with college students sitting on the top. As the driver weaved through (穿梭) the traffic, I could see the boys shaking from side to side.

I was walking down the muddy road one day when my cell phone rang. A child's voice on the other end spoke to me softly, "Dad, please come hack soon. I miss you so much!" Unconsciously, I knew it was a wrong number once again. I don't have a single daughter. I just have a six-year-old son. It is not unusual to receive this kind of calls nowadays, so I replied rudely, "You've dialed the wrong number!" and then hung up in anger.

During the following days, I got the same call now and then. It disturbed me, so I either rejected her or hung up right away rudely. I couldn't help complaining about this, "What an impolite girl! How can she call me up over and over again?" How 1 wished the little girl would stop causing any trouble to me some day! Suddenly, the phone rang up again. It was from the same girl- It seemed that she would not give up until she got an answer.

She constantly called me up. Even if I did not give her an answer, she still dialed my number from time to time. Eventually I unwillingly answered the phone. 1 heard the weak voice of that little girl, "Dad, please come back now. I miss you so much! Mom told me this was not a wrong number. It is your cell phone number, right? Dad, I am in so much pain! Mom said you were too busy to take care of me. She is tired out from looking after me. Dad, I know you are busy. If you cannot come home, please kiss me again in the phone, OK?" The innocent request was difficult to reject. I made a loud kiss into the phone and heard a weak voice saying, "Thank you.... Dad, I am so... happy, so …happy

Old Man Donovan was a mean man who hated children. He threw rocks at them and even shot at them with a shotgun. At least that's what we had heard.

His small farm bordered our neighborhood where my younger sister, Leigh Ann, and I lived when we were growing up. His farm was long, narrow, and quaint. It held two treasures. One was his beautiful fruit.

There were many varieties of fruit: pears, apples, and lots more I just can't think of. The fruit naturally drew the children to his land. It made them into thieves. But my sister and I didn't dare to take his fruit because of the horrible rumors we had heard about Old Man Donovan.

One summer day, we were playing in a nearby field. It was time to head back home. My sister and I were feeling very daring that day. There was a short cut to our house that went through the Donovan farm. We thought he wouldn't be able to see us run across his property around the luscious(可口味美的) fruit trees. We were almost through the farm when we heard, "Hey, girls!" in a gruff (粗哑的), low voice. We stopped dead in our tracks! There we were, face to face with Old Man Donovan. Our knees were shaking. We had visions of rocks pounding our bodies and bullets piercing our hearts.

"Come here," he said, reaching up to one of his apple trees. Still shaking, we went over to him. He held out several ripe, juicy, red apples. "Take these home," he commanded .We took the apples with surprised hearts and ran all the way home. Of course, Leigh Annand I ate the apples.

As time went on, we often went through Old Man Donovan's farm, and he kept on giving us more luscious fruit. One day, we stopped by to see him when he was on his front porch (门廊). We talked to him for hours. While he was talking, we realized that we had found the other hidden treasure: the sweet, kind heart hidden behind his gruff voice. Soon, he was one of our favorite people to talk to.

Paragraph 1:

Every summer, we would visit Mr. Donovan and talk to him.

Paragraph 2:

The next winter, word got around that Old Man Donovan had died.

Mr. Dow's store was widely known throughout the neighborhood. It sold many different things. Every day after school, Little Joey came to the store to look round. He love to look at the pipes. One pipe especially caught his eye. He could not take his eyes off it. He imagined that some day he would be a grown man and could smoke a pipe, just like his father, a father he tried hard to remember.

Joey reached out and touched the pipe. He ran a finger along its stem(烟斗柄). He kept thinking that when he was old enough, he would go to work and his mother could stay home. He would sit back after a day's work and smoke his pipe, as his father did. He looked around the store. Nobody was looking. He put the pipe in his hand. He just wanted to get the feel of it-- nothing more.

Suddenly he was shocked out of his dream. He heard footsteps behind him. It was Mr. Dow, the friendly store owner. Joey was unable to move.

"Hello, Joey," Mr. Dow said, and kept on walking. Joey struggled to answer but could not get his voice up. He swallowed and smiled weakly as Mr. Dow walked away.

Suddenly the store seemed extremely warm. Joey watched his feet begin to move and take him out of the store. Like one walking in his sleep, he moved toward the empty swings. He slipped into one and leaned against its chain. The cold metal links hurt his side.

A feeling of terror now raced through him. He had betrayed (背叛) his mother. He had wanted only to grow up but now he did not feel grown up at all. All sorts of thoughts race through his head. Joey looked at the ground and tried hard to clear his thoughts. He could hide the pipe. He could throw it away. He could send Mr. Dow the money for it. His thoughts went around in the same circle again and again. He felt sick all over.

Carter enjoyed riding the school bus home. The ride home gave him some time to relax after a busy day of fifth grade. He usually sat alone and enjoyed that too. With four siblings(兄妹) he didn't get much time alone. Sometimes he sat with his younger brother, Jackson, but Jackson was sick at home today.

The bus stopped and the tallest boy in his class, Dexter, stepped off followed by his younger brother, Billy. As the bus pulled away, Carter looked back over his shoulder to watch the boys. Dexter was yelling and waving his hands at his little brother. Billy said something Carter could not hear. Dexter yelled, gave his younger brother a hard shove and knocked him to the ground. Billy was on the ground wiping at his eyes, but Dexter walked away.

Carter turned in his seat, feeling disgusted. He hated seeing little kids get picked on (欺负). The sight of Billy on the ground crying was burned into his memory. He tried to think of something else.

He thought of the model car he was working on at home, a 1967 Corvette. He started building it over a week ago and just finished putting it together last night. Tonight, as soon as he finished his homework, he could start painting the car. That was his favorite part. He already had the perfect color of blue picked out.

He hurried off the bus, ran through his yard, and breezed through the kitchen with a quick hello to his mom. She was making spaghetti, which smelled delicious. He ran up the stairs two at a time and rushed into his room.

"Surprise!" his brother Jackson said, throwing his arms into the air. "What are you doing in my room? I thought you were sick!"

"I feel better!"

"What's on your face? Are you bleeding?"

"No! I'm not bleeding." Jackson wiped at his face. "It's probably just paint. Look! Look what I did!" He pointed at the desk in the corner of Carter's room.

My parents and I had just driven down the narrow mountain road from Marrakesh with all its sharp bends, and had finally arrived at Merzouga. Before us stretched the unending sand dunes (沙丘) that marked the beginning of the Sahara.

Our vehicle set off, quietly running over the sand and small stones. It wasn't long before we were surrounded by enormous sand dunes, towering above us on all sides. The wind was blowing grains of sand from the tops of the dunes, the sun was beating down hard and bright, and the sky was a deep shade of blue that I had never seen before. The wild beauty of the desert was about to reveal itself. There was not a plant to be seen. The desert appeared completely empty, which was calming and threatening at the same time.

Eventually, as the last rays of sunlight were falling on the sand, we arrived at our desert camp. Stars were already shining brightly in the darkening sky and it was getting cold with the approach of the night. I grabbed my bag and headed towards the warm campfire. I was starving and rushed to put a steak on the barbecue. We enjoyed two days in the camp with camel riding and campfire parties before we set off for Kenya.

A few days after our departure from the camp, we were very near to our rest camp in the Amboseli National Park. Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, rose up over the plains before us. Tall grasses and trees dotted the plains, which were alive with the African wildlife. Giraffes, with their long necks, were pulling leaves from the highest branches. In the distance, elephants were eating grass, ears flapping lazily as they moved slowly over the plains.

The rest camp was in sight. Several huts made from brick settle across a large pool of water. The walls reflected the afternoon sun. My father, against my mother's advice, decided to drive through the pool of water that stretched across the dirt road.

Steve, a twelve-year-old boy with alcoholic parents, was about to be lost forever, by the U. S. education system. He could read, yet, in spite of his reading skills, Steve was failing. He had been falling since first grade. Steve was a big boy, looking more like a teenager than a twelve-year-old, yet, Steve went unnoticed…until Miss White came.

Miss White was a smiling, young, beautiful lady. For the first time in his young life, Steve couldn't take his eyes off his teacher, yet, still he failed.

In the middle of the first semester of school, the entire seventh grade was tested for basic skills. Steve hurried through his tests, and continued to dream of other things. His heart was not in school, but in the woods, where he often escaped alone camping there, trying to shut out the sights, sounds and smells of his alcoholic home. No one checked on him to see whether he was safe. No one knew he was gone, because no one cared. Strangely, Steve never missed a day of school.

One day, Miss White's impatient voice broke into his daydreams.

"Steve!" Startled, he turned to look at her.

"Pay attention!" She began to go over the test results for the seventh grade.

"You all did pretty well," she told the class, "except for one boy, and it breaks my heart to tell you this, but…" She hesitated, pinning Steve to his seat with a sharp stare, her eyes searching his face.

"…The smartest boy in the seventh grade is failing my class!"

She just stared at Steve, as the class spun around for a good look. Steve dropped his eyes and carefully examined his fingertips.

After that, Steve still wouldn't do his homework. Even as the punishments became more severe, he remained stubborn.

"Just try it! ONE WEEK!" He was unmoved.

"You're smart enough! You'll see a change!" Nothing fazed him.

"Give yourself a chance! Don't give up on your life!" Nothing.

"Steve! Please! I care about you!"

Wow! Suddenly, Steve got it! Someone cared about him? Someone, so beautiful and perfect, CARED ABOUT HIM?!

Paragraph 1

Steve went home from school, thoughtful, that afternoon.

Paragraph 2

The following Monday, Miss White, gave a quiz on the weekend homework.

Five years ago, my father and I had a heated disagreement and really never resolved it since that time. We avoided seeing each other unless we had to be at family gatherings. But even then, we hardly spoke to each other.

Last Tuesday I convinced myself I was going to tell my father I loved him. I called my dad to see if I could come over. When he answered the phone, I just said, "Dad, can I come over after work tonight? I have something to tell you. "My dad responded, "Now what? "I assured him it wouldn't take long, so he finally agreed.

I came to my parents' house, praying Dad would answer the door. I was afraid that if Mom answered I would chicken out and tell her instead. But as luck would have it, Dad did answer the door.

"Dad, I just came over to tell you that I love you. "

It was as if a transformation(转换; 改革; 变形)came over my dad. His face softened, and the wrinkles seemed to disappear. He hugged me and said, "I love you too, my son, but I've never been able to say it. "

It was such a precious moment that I didn't want to move. Dad and I hugged for a moment longer and then I left.

Two days later, my dad, who had heart problems, but didn't tell me, had an attack and ended up in the hospital, unconscious. I don't know if he'll make it.

So my message to all of you in this is: Don't wait to do the things that you know need to be done. What if I had waited to tell my dad—maybe I will never get the chance again! Take the time to do what you need to do and do it now!

Mother and I spent mornings cleaning up the dirt that blew into our house. Mother said all the dust was due to the drought, not only here in our village but all over the Great Plains.

The dirt covered everything. When my sister, Amy, and I walked to school, we wore kerchiefs (方头巾) over our mouths so that we didn't breathe in the dirt. When the air quality was so bad that the school was closed, we stayed at home and helped Mother put wet sheets over the windows, but the dirt always found a way in.

Last Sunday, there was no dirt in the air, only bright sunshine and a clear blue sky. After breakfast, Father headed out to the farm to check on the cattle while Mother started doing some washing. Amy and I played in the yard. Surprisingly, the temperature suddenly dropped.

Then Mother shouted from the house, "Christine, you and Amy get inside, quick, now!"

I looked towards the west and saw a huge black cloud. All the birds flew away. "Amy, go with Mother!" I shouted, "I'll warn Father."

Amy ran towards the house. The storm hit so fast, and I barely saw her climb the steps. In an instant the day turned into night. I stumbled (绊倒) over our bicycles left carelessly in the yard. I screamed, hoping my voice would lead Father back.

The dirt and sand stung (刺痛) my skin like a thousand bees. I needed to get to a shelter. Covering my face with one hand, I moved towards our car which was parked in the yard and opened the door. Dirt flew in with me as I closed the door. Father was still out there! I needed to help him find the car.

I searched the dashboard (仪表板) and found the switch for the front lights. Would Father see them in the darkness? Was he safe? I pushed the horn (喇叭) again and again, hoping Father would hear it. I pushed until I had no more strength in my arms.

Life had seemed perfect for my mother between working in her small garden and writing children's stories for a website, to which she had been a regular contributor until the birth of my little baby Elon. Her stories had always been well-received winning her hundreds of thousands of fans. Updates of her special column had been their weekly anticipation(期盼)during the years.

My husband, Mathew, and I ran a trade business with 46 countries. We were struggling for a balance between family and work when Mom offered to help out. She decided to retire from writing to take care of Elon. I supposed it must have been a hard decision for her to give up her long-loved career and say goodbye to her devoted fans. The sacrifice would be a huge one though it was the best for Elon.

I owe too much to Mom, a single mother who not only brought me up and provided me with the best education but also accompanied me through .thick and thin, enlightening(启发)me about life and bringing me up as a happy and responsible person. So I told Mom to think twice and we could discuss other alternatives.

On one of her visits to us, Mom brought with her an old photo album, which was filled with old pictures of Mom and me in my childhood. Looking at the pictures one by one, I was flooded by blurry(模糊的) but sweet memories. In the pictures, Mom, looked young, beautiful and content. Mom told me how much happiness I had brought to her and how much inspiration she had got from me for writing children's stories.

I came to truly understand what it was that made Mom a popular writer and why she was referred to as "having the best skills to express what love really means" by critics. Having the belief that Mom would surely be happy with Elon. I finally accepted Mom's offer. though still feeling sorry for her readers and the website she wrote for.

It all started at lunch. Someone asked Maria, a girl in my class, if she wanted a piece of pie. But because she's allergic (过敏) to wheat, she can't eat pie. Everyone was sympathetic. Then I said I was allergic to bananas. At first, everyone stared at me like I was from another planet. So, for the next ten minutes, I had to listen to all sorts of silly jokes about what bad luck I have because I can't eat bananas.

Later, when my friend Joe and I were walking home, he began to laugh about the incident at lunch. I complained that if I was going to be allergic to something, at least it should be something I hated.

"Like what?" he asked. "Well, like..." I began, making a face, "maybe broccoli (西兰花)." Joe laughed. Then he started clowning around, pretending that he was me eating broccoli. "Oh, oh," he groaned, scratching (挠痒) himself. "I itch (发痒) everywhere!"

When I got home, I smelled something delicious. "What smells so good, Mom?" I called out. My mother replied, "It's dinner. I found a new recipe I think you'll like." After setting the table, I called my younger brother and sister. We all sat down, and Mom spooned out the vegetable. When I saw what it was, shock set in, and I was speechless.

Mom said, "Luis, eat! It's broccoli with beans." I couldn't move. She said again, "Luis, eat. You know the rule."

Mom had the rule that we had to eat everything on our plate, or we couldn't have dessert, usually my favorite ice cream. I picked up my fork, took a tiny bit, and put it to my mouth. I put the fork down again. I thought of Joe's crazy act and started scratching myself—slowly at first and then faster and faster. My brother and sister looked at me suspiciously.

"Luis, what's going on?" Mom asked. I said, "Mom, I think I'm allergic to broccoli." "Really?" she asked. I nodded, and she studied me for a moment. Then she said, "I just read an article in a health magazine. It tells parents what to do when their kids show sudden allergies to broccoli. Let me get the cure."

Jose was a devoted teacher for a local high school in California. Unfortunately, with the money he earned, he couldn't support his family and extended family in Mexico and rent an apartment in California at the same time. Therefore, having failed to afford the rental of even a shoebox apartment, he had no choice but to live in his old car occasionally to make ends meet until he could find another place to live.

To make matters worse, he found himself living this unfortunate lifestyle after Covid -19 swept the world when California schools closed their doors following the outbreak. This left Jose with little means for making money. So at age 77, Jose ended up living inside of his car. For about two years he was homeless. Home was his car, and his car sat in a grocery store parking lot. During daytime he drove to different locations, looking for job opportunities while he spent most of his nights at the same parking lot, which gave him a sense of belonging.

At day time, he would lean his seat all the way back, so no one would see him because he knew he wasn't supposed to be there and worried the manager of the grocery store would drive him away. He was a man of self-respect and didn't want to turn to charity.

When Maggie, the manager of the grocery store did see Jose, she felt he looked familiar because she used to be in his class many years ago. She could still remember how Jose encouraged her to finish her education when she was struggling with her learning. She noticed Jose spent a considerable amount of time in his car, she suspected her teacher had fallen on hard times. She became determined to help her former teacher in his time of need. So, the former student decided to repay the favor and help her homeless teacher.

It was spring, and Steve wanted to get a new set (套装) of football, sports shoes, and a really cool backpack. There was only one problem. That great set was too expensive. Steve only saved $10, and that was not even close to what he would need to buy the set." I could ask mom and dad to give my pocket money in advance," he thought to himself, "but that would be a big advance!"

That night, Steve told his parents the problem. "Have you ever thought about doing something for the neighborhood to earn some extra money?" asked his dad. "No, it would take me too long to earn the money," answered Steve, "I need the new set for the school football match in two weeks."

"Well, if you earn part of the money, I'll advance you the rest. Is that OK?" suggested his dad. Steve agreed with the offer, went back to his bedroom and thought about what he could do to earn some money." Billy from next door takes care of Mrs. Smith's garden, Kelly walks Mr. Frank's dog, and Tony washes Mr. Lipton's car. There is nothing that I can do to ear some money," thought Steve.

The next day after school, Steve went past the store, Sports Time. He loved to lok in the window at all the football equipment and other goods on the shelves. Steve went in and looked at the new football set he wanted.

"Hi, Steve," said Mrs. Thomas," what can I do for you today?"

"I want to see if there is a sale on that football set"

"I am afraid not," said Mrs. Thomas, "it is sill S60."

"I only have $10 saved, and my dad said if I could do something for the neighborhood, he would advance me the rest," said Steve, and he told her about the school football match.
