After supper I called for Checkers. But Checkers didn't come. Nighttime came. I called and called. I knocked his food dish with a spoon loudly. But still no Checkers. I left the porch light on. But the next morning Checkers still wasn't there.
I carried a picture of Checkers to all the neighbors. I drew posters and hung them all over. But nobody found Checkers.
Days went by. Life wasn't the same without that cat. I was angry with Dad. I didn't think he missed Checkers at all.

Meanwhile, I looked up at the street sign, Rua da Madalena. I'd heard that name before. We continued a little farther up the street, and I spotted a few people hanging out in a lane. There was something particularly familiar about the scene. I looked closer. There was a small store practically hidden in the lane. It had books in its windows.

That's a really fancy bike!" Daniel screamed back at him as he rode towards his first delivery. He couldn't help imagining what it would feel like to own a bike like the one Mr. Warren had just shown him. "My deliveries would double with that" he thought longingly.
Suddenly, Daniel lost balance and fell on the road. He got up and leaned the bike against the wall to see what had happened. He found a nail stuck in the back tire (轮胎) and he unluckily had a flat tire.
As he turned around and tried to think of what to do, he saw something unusual. A strange man Daniel had never seen before furtively (鬼鬼祟祟地) looked around and placed a package under his jacket. "Hey!" Daniel shouted at the man. "Hey there! What are you doing? That's not yours!" The man heard Daniel and started to run as fast as he could.

I was studying a Barbie and doing some simple math in my head when an earthshaking clap of thunder roared（吼叫）from the storm outside. I jumped at the noise, dropping the doll to the floor. The lights sparkled once and died, covering everything in a blanket of blackness. Thunder continued to shake the sky and lightning lit the store for seconds, casting frightening shadows on my mind.

There was silence for moments. Suddenly, there came Riley's determined voice." Mom, I'm going to buy such a bike for one of those kids." A bit surprised, Mother pulled Riley into her arms, and kissed her on the forehead." Sweetheart, it may be a big challenge for us!" Mother said." But for a kid who can't walk, such a bike would be a marvelous Christmas present!" Riley smiled.
Two days later, Riley ran into the kitchen just like a gust of wind, and cheerfully showed her mother a letter she had written asking for donations. "I think it's amazing that there are such special bikes for kids who can't walk," the letter said, "I saw on the Net how happy a boy was when he got one... I'm writing to ask for your help."
Mother was deeply touched by her daughter's effort, but doubts quickly occurred. The cost of just one of those special bikes could be as high as $4,000.
