Every time Tracy Mccreary, a young mother from London, put her baby daughter Sienna to bed,she and her husband were forced to perform a Mission Impossible style escape. Just walking out of her bedroom would wake her—the noise from their floorboards was so loud that little Sienna would hear it from any room in the house.
“It was really annoying, ” said Paul Lanzarotti, Sienna’s father. “We were exhausted and our house wasn’t fun to live in anymore,” Flooring experts told him that the only solution for the noise was to remove the floorboards and replace them at a cost of E5,000 .
Lanzarotti decided to take matters into his own hands and spent hours on the Internet for a solution. He learned that the noise was caused by friction, which could be stopped if properly lubricated (润滑). Lanzarotti also found out that a chemical compound found in Teflon was one of the world’s best lubricant components.
The determined father discovered that mixing the Teflon compound with an acrylic fluid(丙烯酸流体) could be used to spray the flooring and stop the noise. He then called a chemical company and asked its engineers to produce the spray which he called“Stop Creak”.
“I tested it at home and just couldn’t believe the result. I sprayed it in Sienna’ s room first and the floor was immediately silenced,” said Lanzarotti. “Eight months later, it was still silent. It felt like a huge relief. When Tracy saw the difference for the first time, her face just lit up. You can treat a couple of rooms in an hour.” he added. “It’ s a no-brainer for any parents with noisy floors, and it’ll be life-changing.”

This summer, a cave in Central Europe got a lot of attention when it became home to more than two dozen baby dragons. These animals are actually called olms (洞螈) which look like dragons.
A female olm might lay eggs just once every six years. Excitement over the possibility of new babies started in January, when the first egg was spotted deep within the Postojna Cave in Slovenia. In the end, with the help of scientists, 22 olms were born between May 30 and July 14. They are now growing into healthy teenage dragons.
Olms live in underwater limestone caves in Central Europe. These caves are difficult to reach, so scientists don’ t often get to observe olms in their natural habitat.
Olms, which can grow to be up to 16 inches long, are one of the largest cave animals in the world. They have pale skin and long snouts and their tiny eyes are fully covered with skin.
No natural light reaches these deep caves, so many animals that live there cannot see. But olms use their incredible senses of smell and hearing to hunt worms, crabs, and snails. Olms can also survive without food for long periods of time, even as long as 10 years.
When a female olm laid 64 eggs in the Postojna Cave last winter, scientists thought that only two or three of them would survive. In the wild, only about two baby olms successfully hatch from 500 eggs. The last time a female olm laid eggs at the Postojna Cave, none of the eggs hatched. So this time, scientists worked very hard to care for the olm eggs and watched over them as they grew. About one-third of the 64 baby olms survived, and they appear to be doing well.
Scientists are hopeful about the babies’ future. Although baby olms don’ t eat for the first couple of months, by August three of the oldest babies were eating worms. That was an important step in their development.
“We will keep doing everything we possibly can to ensure the olms’ well-being,” a press statement for the team stated.
【1】What can we learn about the birth of the olms found in the Postojna Cave this year?
A.It is an extremely rare event. B.It proves dragons really exist.
C.It needs more public attention. D.It means a new-found species.
【2】What is a characteristic of olms?
A.They prefer living in dry environments. B.They have a poor sense of hearing.
C.They can live up to 10 years. D.They are born blind.
【3】What do the numbers in Paragraph 6 show?
A.Olms can’ t live without scientists’ help.
B.The birth rate of olms is usually very low.
C.Olms usually face hard living surroundings.
D.Fewer and fewer female olms lay eggs now.
【4】How old were the oldest baby olms when they began to eat this summer?
A.Less than one month old. B.Over two months old.
C.Nearly twelve months old. D.About eight months old.

Have you heard of Creative Growth? The Oakland institution offers a professional studio space where adult artists with developmental, mental and physical disabilities can create work. It also provides gallery exhibitions, representation, guidance, a community of likeminded artists and a safe space in which to grow. The late Judith Scott, whose artwork lit up the Brooklyn Museum in a retrospective(回顾展)last year, was a Creative Growth artist who suffered from down syndrome(唐氏综合症)and hearing loss.
“It’s the best facility for local adult artists living with disabilities,” Jonah Olson, an artist and former teacher in Creative Growth’s printmaking studio said. “ The amount of work they produce and the quality of it are remarkable.”
Olson, who now lives in Los Angeles, is a member of the band L.A. Takedown. Along with his bandmates, Olson decided to use the opportunity to expose Southern California to lesser known contemporary outsider artists, living and working just a few hours up north.
“I’ve had an interest in outsider art for a long time,” Olson explained. “You make art as a child and the reasons for doing it now, in my case, are no different now from what they were then. It’ s very basic. Intrinsic (本质的). I think that’s what drew me to art made by people with developmental disabilities.”
The show, a survey of the space’s better-known and lesser-known names, loosely revolves(围绕) around themes of art and music. “Not a lot of the recent artwork specifically is about music, but we are grouping the work around the idea of being in the cities of L.A. and Oakland.” Olson said.
The artists of Creative Growth will be on view throughout the month of August, coupled with musical performances and film screenings organized by L.A. Takedown. All proceeds from the month will benefit the artists and space. The money will be used to improve the condition of the studio and for the development of the artists. “L.A. doesn’t really have a place like Creative Growth,” Olson said, discussing his hopes for the show.
【1】What do we know about Creative Growth?
A.It was founded by Judith Scott.
B.It hosts exhibitions of famous artists’ works.
C.It offers professional service to physically disabled people.
D.It provides an artistic environment for disabled adult artists.
【2】Why does Olson like outsider art?
A.It is created by children.
B.It focuses on the art itself.
C.It is different from contemporary art.
D.It shows the feelings of disabled people.
【3】What does the underlined word “proceeds” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Activities. B.Work
C.Profits D.Arrangement
【4】What would be the best title for the text?
A.An art show brings music along.
B.Outsider art challenges traditions.
C.Creative art helps people develop across many fields.

Most of us don’ t have millions of dollars to go door-to-door to persuade people to care about climate change. 【1】 So let’s talk to them about climate change. Because if we can’t convince our parents to take action on climate, who can we convince?
It might be a hard conversation. If you do accept this challenge, here are a few suggestions:
Talk to them with love and respect. If you’ve ever used any poisonous terms, please get rid of them from your vocabulary. 【2】
Share a couple of informative articles on the topic. Bill Mckibben’s article in Rolling Stone is great and very readable. 【3】 The most important thing for them to understand is that on our current path we may no longer have a climate that allows for secure societies within the lifetimes of today’s children.
Once these unpleasant facts are laid out, make it clear that you aren’t blaming them for this. Your parents likely made all of their decisions with a strong sense of morality and social responsibility, and could only make those decisions based on the information they had at the time. 【4】 But now that you have provided this new information, talk about how it warns them, and all of us, to behave in new ways.
Encourage them to buy environmentally friendly goods and services as much as possible. Talk to them about trying to avoid using or use less fossil fuels. But given the urgency and severity of the problem, also make it clear that this will not be enough. 【5】
A.But most of us do have parents.
B.Ask them to please care for both of them.
C.Otherwise, you’ re making everything worse.
D.There’s no need to flood them with data.
E.And give them a hug, because they’d probably like that!
F.This is a challenge that requires us all to act as citizens, not just as consumers.
G.Therefore, if they have done something improper before, it is not necessarily their fault.

Last year, I went to Los Angeles for a holiday after I won the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing championship. It was a sunny day, with a blue, cloudless sky over a calm sea. I went outside and climbed up onto the roof for a break. I sat and watched people swimming in the sea. But then, as I looked in the distance, I saw a series of three or four big waves heading toward the shore. I'd seen these mini-tsunamis(海啸)many times before. They were heading at speed towards the swimming area. Most people knew to look out for them, but from the screams that started coming from the beach, I could tell someone was in trouble.
Without thinking, I ran down into the street, grabbing my bodyboard (冲浪板 ) on the way. I shouted at a stranger to call the lifeguard. My neighbor Tom had heard the screaming as well and was also outside with his bodyboard, so together we rushed to the steps that led down to the beach.
When we got down there, we discovered the waves had pulled two boys into the open sea.
I knew that the nearest boat would take at least 30 minutes to reach us. I wasn’t used to this sort of emergency—I'd never been trained as a lifeguard—but I didn't think twice about trying to save them. I suppose in a way I wanted to impress everyone;at 19, a deal like that can seem like a good opportunity to show off.
Tom and I dived into the water. It took us 10 minutes to locate them. When we finally reached them, they were barely able to stay afloat (漂浮的), their heads bobbing up and down in the water. We could tell they were still alive from their small breaths but it was clear they wouldn’t have been able to stay there much longer. Tom and I held the boys and pulled them over our boards.
