One of the greatest contributors to the first Oxford English Dictionary was also one of its most unusual. In 1879, Oxford University in England asked Prof. James Murray to serve as editor for what was to be the most ambitious dictionary in the history of the English language. It would include every English word possible and would give not only the definition but also the history of the word and quotations(引文) showing how it was used.
This was a huge task, so Murray had to find volunteers from Britain, the United States, and the British colonies to search every newspaper, magazine, and book ever written in English. Hundreds of volunteers responded, including William Chester Minor. Dr. Minor was an American surgeon who had served in the Civil War and was now living in England. He gave his address as “Broadmoor, Crowthorne, Berkshire,” 50 miles from Oxford.
Minor joined the army of volunteers sending words and quotations to Murray. Over the next 17 years, he became one of the staff’s most valued contributors.
But he was also a mystery. In spite of many invitations, he would always decline to visit Oxford. So in 1897, Murray finally decided to travel to Crowthorne himself. When he arrived, he found Minor locked in a book-lined cell at the Broadmoor Asylum(精神病院) for the Criminally Insane.
Murray and Minor became friends, sharing their love of words. Minor continued contributing to the dictionary, sending in more than 10,000 submissions in 20 years. Murray continued to visit Minor regularly, sometimes taking walks with him around the asylum grounds.
In 1910, Minor left Broadmoor for an asylum in his native America. Murray was at the port to wave goodbye to his remarkable friend.
Minor died in 1920, seven years before the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary was completed. The 12 volunteers defined 414,825 words, and thousands of them were contributions from a very scholarly and devoted asylum patient.

A.He helped Murray to find hundreds of volunteers.
B.He sent newspapers, magazines and books to Murray.

【3】Which of the following best describes Dr. Minor?

C.Considerate and optimistic. D.Unusual and scholarly.
【4】What does the text mainly talk about?
A.The history of the English language.

It's a pity that deaf people, or those who have hearing problems can't enjoy music. But now a vibrating(振动的) suit brings them hope — it can allow them to feel music through their skin, rather than hear it.
Designed by the US technology company, Not Impossible Labs, the suit consists of a body harness(全身式安全带) and wrist straps(腕带).
Music is sent to the suit wirelessly. Then the suit is able to translate it into a range of vibrating pulses, which can be felt at a total of 24 contact points all over the body. The users can adjust the intensity of the vibrations.
Chase Burton, 33, a deaf filmmaker from Texas, US, has been testing out the suit for four years. He understands that a deaf person's experience with music is very different. "When I was a kid, I'd lie on the floor above our garage so I could feel the vibrations from my brother's band rocking out below my body," Burton told CNN.
Now when he wears the vibrating suit, he says the sound hits different parts of his body. “Maybe it will strike me down in my ankles first. And then I will start to feel the vibrations in my back and then I will feel some pulsations in my wrist,” Burton said.
The designers have been working on extending the tactile(触觉的) musical experience to a large deaf community. In 2016, a dozen prototype(样品) suits were tested at a Lady Gaga concert in the US.
The suit was also tested at a different concert in Las Vegas in 2018. It was given to 150 audience members at the concert where half the audience members were deaf and a half could hear.
At the same time, the company has been improving the technology, saying it’s ready to go to market soon. The suit may be used in live sports broadcasts video games or theme parks. The ultimate goal is to make the technology available to all.
“We truly think that anything that has no audio element can also have a vibrational experience associated with it as well,” the company’s talent and business development director, Jordan Richardson, told CNN.
【1】How does the vibrating suit help people with hearing problems?
A.It sends sounds to their ears through a wire.
B.It improves their contact points all over the body.
C.It turns music into vibrating pulses that can be felt.
D.It changes the intensity of sounds based on the users.
【2】Why is Burton’s experience mentioned?
A.To show how difficult it is for a deaf person to enjoy music.
B.To tell readers different ways that people enjoy music.
C.To express regret for not having a technology earlier.
D.To ask designers to make user-friendly products for deaf people.
【3】What do we know about the suit?
A.It is widely used at concerts.
B.It is well received by the market.
C.It is being improved to further its use.
D.It works better with people who can hear.
【4】What does Richardson think of the technology?
A.It has a bright future.

D.It is of little practical use.

The tons of plastic we’re dumping in the oceans is finding a new home—the stomachs of our beautiful marine animals. Yet another reminder of this fact washed ashore in Eastern Indonesia this week. A large amount of waste, including drinking cups and flip-flops, was found in the stomach of a whale that died off the coast near Kapota Island.
The 9.5-metre sperm whale (抹香鲸) was found by rescuers from the Wakatobi National Park. The whale had swallowed 5.9 kilograms of plastic waste containing 115 plastic cups, four plastic bottles, 25 plastic bags, and more than 1,000 other kinds of pieces of plastic, park chief Heri Santoso told the reporter.
“Although we have not been able to deduce the cause of death, the facts that we see are truly awful,” said Dwi Suprapti, a marine species conservation co-ordinator at WWF Indonesia. She said it was not possible to determine if the plastic had caused the whale’s death because of the animal’s advanced state of decay (腐烂). But this is only the latest.
Four Asian nations—Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand—account for 50% of the plastic waste in the oceans, according to a report by environmental campaigner Ocean Conservancy and the McKinsey Center for Business and Environment. The Philippines is second to Indonesia when it comes to putting away plastic waste in the oceans, according to a study published in the journal Science in January. Of the 3.2 million mismanaged waste it produces every year, 1.29 million ends up in the ocean.
A report released earlier this year stated that the amount of plastic in the ocean is likely to increase.
【1】What can we know about the sperm whale?
A. Its stomach is the home of plastic waste.
B. It died of swallowing lots of plastic waste.
C. It was the first whale to eat plastic waste.
D. It had eaten much plastic waste before its death.
【2】Which can best replace the underlined word “deduce” in paragraph 3?
A. confirm B. cause
C. approve D. contain
【3】Which country dumps the most plastic waste into the oceans?
A. Thailand B. Indonesia
C. Vietnam D. Philippines
【4】What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. Philippines puts away 1.29 million tons of plastic.
B. A sperm whale was found dead near Kapota Island.
C. Much dumped plastic waste was found in a dead whale.
D. We should take measures to reduce the waste in whales.

How long does a year last?【1】Your parents might say that a whole year can pass―in the blink of an eye. Why does time seem to pass faster as we get older?
【2】 This physical change causes the rate at which we take in and process new information to decline. Babies, for example, move their eyes much more often than adults because they're processing images at a faster rate. They take in a lot of information and do many things in a single day.【3】However, as people's brains degrade over time, fewer images are processed in the same amount of time. Therefore, older people receive less information during a day than younger people. This causes things to seem as though they're happening more quickly.
【4】People may measure time by the number of memorable events that can be recalled within a certain period. Have you ever noticed that when you recall your firsts, they seem to be in slow motion? That's because when something is a first, there are many exciting things to remember. Recalling these memories makes you feel like they took forever.
For many adults, life is routine. When they look back, they might feel like there are not many novel things to remember.【5】
A.Children might say that a year lasts forever.
B.Different people have different feelings toward time.
C.Therefore, time seems to be moving faster to them.
D.As we grow older, we become less interested in new things.
E.This makes them feel like a single day lasts for a long time.
F.According to scientists, our brains degrade and change over time.
G.In addition, people may also feel time differently due to psychological reasons.
