I had an experience some years ago, which taught me something about the ways in which people make a bad situation worse by blaming themselves. One January, I had to hold two funerals on days in a row for two elderly women in my community. Both had died “ full of years”, as the Bible would say. Their homes happened to be near each other, so I paid condolence(吊唁) calls on the two families on the same afternoon. At the first home, the son of the deceased(已故的)woman said to me, “ If only I had sent my mother to Florida and gotten her out of this cold and snow, she would What's the real meaning of the word " peace ” ? The f (1) story may tell us something about it. There was once a king who offered an award to an artist who could paint the b (2) picture of peace. Many a (3) tried. The king looked at all the pictures. But there were only two he really liked and he had to choose between them. One picture was a calm lake. The lake was a perfect thing for peace because of the high mountains around it. And overhead was a blue sky with white clouds. A (4) who saw this picture would think that it was a perfect picture of peace. The other picture had mountains too. But they were rugged(高低不平的).Above was the dark sky, from which heavy rain fell. A waterfall was rushing down the side of the mountain. This picture did not look p (5) at all. But when the king looked c (6) he found behind the waterfall a very small bush g (7) and a mother bird sitting on her nest(鸟窝)一in perfect peace. The king gave the award to the artist who painted the s (8) picture. Why? "Because," explained the king, upeace does not mean a place where there is no n (9) or trouble. Peace m (10) in the midst of all those things, you're still calm in your heart. That's the real meaning of peace.”1. f 2. b 3. a 4. A 5. p 6. c 7. g 8. s 9. n 10. m
