Climb of a lifetime
British historian Jacob Bronowski once wrote, "Man masters nature not by force, but by understanding. "
This is especially true for extreme climber Alex Honnold, who climbed the California's EI Capitan by himself, without any safety ropes. The New York Times called it "one of the greatest athletic feats of any kind, ever".
Now you can watch him do it. The documentary Free Solo, which hit Chinese mainland cinemas on Sept. 6, shows Honnold's brave journey up the 914-meter vertical(垂直的) mountain. The film won the 2019 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in February. In it, Honnold gives us some useful advice: "You'll always feel fear, but over time you'll realize the only way to truly manage your fear is to broaden your comfort zone."
In fact, free climbing is a testament to perseverance(毅力), control, and concentration. "I'm not thinking about anything when I'm climbing," Honnold said. While the documentary seemingly praises extreme athletes for pushing the limits of human potential, some are concerned about Honnold recklessly(不顾一切地) risking his own life. "His continued pursuit of ropeless ascents(攀登) puts significant stress on his loved ones, even when he succeeds," Climbing Magazine noted.
Free Solo seems to say that with enough courage and dedication(全心投入), one can accomplish any goal. However, the movie may also be viewed as the disturbing story of a climber who went against all better judgment and got away with it(未遭遇不测).
Hollywood is producing one of history's (dramatic) scenes of whale attacks by far for its upcoming blockbuster, In the Heart of the Sea.
The film, due (release) in the US in December, follows the real-life adventure of the Essex, an American whaling ship. Its crew was on the hunt for sperm whales, whose (fat) could be made into valuable whale oil. The Essex journeyed to the Pacific over the course of a year. It was there the crew met disaster.
Nov. 20, 1820, they spotted a group of whales at 8 a. m. The crew quickly sailed to the area and waited. Suddenly, the surface of the water broke, as the whales (rise) for air. The hunt was on. First mate Owen Chase harpooned (用鱼叉捕获) a heavy whale, and his captain another. Later, Chase noticed third whale headed "directly" for the ship. His appearance and attitude gave no alarm at first. But moments later he struck the ship with his head. The blow "nearly threw us all on our faces", Chase wrote. "We looked at each other with perfect (amaze)."
The Essex was starting to sink, and as crew members attempted to flee, the whale started to attack their small get-away boats. Twenty men survived, (stick) in the middle of ocean. Short on resources, the men started to starve. Moreover, their boats got separated by the waves, and help finally arrived, only eight men remained.

Last Friday afternoon, we had basketball match against Class Three. At the beginning, we both tried to show each to be the best player. We just ran around and didn't pass down the ball to others. Soon we fall behind. During the break, our headmaster Mr. Li patient advised us to working together as a team. We followed her advice. In the end we won the game but each of us felt happy.
