A few years ago, I wanted to do something special for my birthday.  I remembered how my parents gave me a very special treat when I was a child. I never enjoyed big parties, so they decided to celebrate my birthday by organizing a party for the local orphans (孤儿).

With those memories in mind, ten days before my birthday I placed an order for a huge cake with lovely decorations. I also asked for a day's leave from the office where I worked. There it was! A huge cake with beautiful decorations! I felt like a kid myself! I bought some other food to go with the special cake. Then smiling broadly, I drove to an orphanage(孤儿院).

There were two different buildings:  an orphanage and a nursing home run by the same management. I went in. There were only six young boys in the home that day. They loved the feast! We sang, told stories, painted, and played in the garden. I felt like the oldest kid there!

When the children's rest time came we realized there was still a lot of food left. The nurse had a bright idea.

So, I visited the nursing home (养老院) as well! We spent a few hours together, enjoying the food, singing songs, telling stories.  What a contrast (对比)!

I finally arrived home, meeting my family who had come to celebrate my birthday. What an unforgettable birthday I had!

Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.

Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Others burst with anger, and scream and yell. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing anger.

For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person's health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same hormones (荷尔蒙). They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etc.

Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.

They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, " Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably."

Doctors say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry.

A. In general the person feels excited and ready to act.

B. They say that laughter is much healthier than anger.

C. Expressing anger violently is more harmful than repressing it.

D. Anger may cause you a cancer.

E. Do not express your anger while angry.

F. Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time.

G. Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger.

Self-esteem is the ruling view you have of yourself. This includes your beliefs about your inner qualities and how you think others see you.  Someone can develop low self-esteem even when they are highly functional and greatly skilled. Understanding this mysterious emotional currency might be the key to unlocking your own self-worth.

People with healthy self-esteem don't need to boast about themselves to others. People with low self-esteem may tell you how much everyone loves them, what a great job they do at work, and how amazing they are at pretty everything under the sun even though they really wonder if it's true. People may see them as obnoxious or "full of themselves". They are not shy about sharing ideas, including constructive criticisms of others. They also take care of themselves without second-guessing or apologizing. They are the people who we say seem "sure of themselves".

If you're starting to think you may have low self-esteem, you can work on the way you talk to yourself. When you turn off negative self-talk, you can open the floor to positive reinforcements and access the courage to show different sides of yourself. It isn't going to feel good at first, though. Keep going until it becomes less and less and maybe even a few awkward laughs in the mirror may help.

However, in serious cases of low or even non-existent self-esteem, you may want to call in a professional or a specialist. Good mental health is important, and professionals doing psychotherapy do not pass judgement or give corrections. It is the best way to get at the roots of your real self-esteem problems.

It will take some work but your entire life—from your relationships to your body image to your work habits—will be touched with the kind of power that only comes from someone believing in themselves. This is the hardest part, and the greatest leap. With some changes and support, you can improve your self-esteem and see how everything else changes as a result.

A. Self-esteem is not always rooted in reality, though.

B. You have the power to shape a new self-perception

C. This encourages you to speak openly without worry.

D. The real test of character is whether they can learn from their mistakes

E. Self-esteem refers to a person's overall sense of his or her value or worth.

F. People with a healthy level of self-esteem present themselves with a casual confidence.

G. With some practice and persistence, you will win this internal struggle to see your self-worth.

Researches (identify) two main ways in which we learn a foreign language since 1950s. Firstly, experts talks of us acquiring(习得) language. This means same as picking up language. They say that to learn a foreign language successfully, we need lots of (expose) to it and that we learn when we are surrounded by language. We need to hear and read language which is rich in variety, interesting to us and just difficult enough for us (for example, just beyond our level), not too difficult. We acquire language over a period of time without realizing that we are learning. Secondly, experts believe that to learn language successfully, we need to use it in communication other people. We need to use language (express) ourselves and make our meaning clear to them, and to understand them. The person we are talking to will let us know, directly or indirectly, if they have understood us or not. If they have not understood, we need to try again, (use) other language until we manage to communicate (effective). It is this process of struggling to make meaning clear helps learners experiment with language and try out structures and vocabulary(learn) in daily interactions to see if they help them get their message across.

Reading is essential but how can one choose the right books to read and where can one find them? A few famous people may give you some helpful tips.

●Read books from past eras.

Otherwise, you'd be "completely dependent on the prejudices and fashions of your times," just as

Albert Einstein put it. "Somebody who reads only newspapers and books of contemporary authors looks to me like an extremely near-sighted person who dislikes eyeglasses," he said.

●

Reading too wide a variety in too short a time would keep the teachings from leaving a lasting impression on you. Seneca the Younger, a first-century Roman philosopher, suggested that "you must linger (流连) among a limited number of master thinkers, and digest their works, if you would obtain ideas which shall win firm hold in your mind."

●Shop at secondhand bookstores.

Virginia Woolf believed the works in secondhand bookstores have an attraction which the usual volumes of the library lack. Browsing through these books gives you the chance to run into something that wouldn't have risen to the attention of librarians and booksellers.

●Check out authors' reading lists.

In his 1940 guide How to Read a Book, American philosopher Mortimer J. Adler talked about how to choose books. He attached importance to those that other authors consider worth reading.  Mortimer wrote that "one way to understand them is to read the books they read."

● Make the final decision by yourself.

It's you yourself who should choose what, how and when to read. Theodore Roosevelt recommended choosing books on subjects that interest you and letting your mood guide you to your next great read.

A. Interest is the best teacher.

B. Great authors are great readers.

C. Leave some room for older works.

D. Learn more about those great authors.

E. Don't jump too quickly from book to book.

F. There's no "best books" list that everyone should follow.

G. Usually they are much more selective in organizing their collections.

Walk Out of the Comfort Zone and Try New Things

For most high school students, free periods (课,节) are useless. From what I have seen, few do homework. . This makes it impossible for those who actually want to do work to complete any. As a senior next year, I think extra periods should be used to take optional subjects.

. Now is the time for us students to choose a suitable one. We will experiment in different fields of study. We will never know if we are interested or talented in a subject if we don't try it.

In my 8th grade, I was told that I had to take an art class as a graduation requirement; so in the 9th grade I took Studio and Art. One of the projects was to build a clay pot, but I built mine incorrectly, so it broke in the kiln (窑). . Now I know for sure that I do not want to be an artist. However, the class was one of my favorites that year. I was able to try new activities and test my ability.

! College is when we should focus on a specific major, but high school is when we have to figure it out.

Half of all college students change their major at some point. By doing that hundreds of dollars are wasted on classes that they would have never needed to take. So use our extra periods to find out what we want to do in college. .

A. Our school offers many classes

B. We should find out what we are good at

C. I've avoided anything related to art since then

D. Instead, many are on their phones and talking

E.I found out that I have no artistic ability at all

F. Walk out of our comfort zone and try new things

G. The classes we choose can influence us in the future
