Christmas was hanging around. Six-year-old David was thinking what presents he could get from Santa. He wanted slippers; he wanted a silk tie; he wanted some toys. And school starting soon, he also hoped to get something about schooling. In order to get Santa to know what he needed, he thought he would write a letter to Santa, which he believed would bring him those presents. He found a sheet and made a list of the items on it, and then bent down to post the letter up the chimney, waiting for the winds to take it up.
David got up very early on the Christmas morning. He searched his room carefully, but to his disappointment, he didn't find the presents he hoped for. Hadn't Santa received the letter? My sister Stacy and I set out on a warm spring day to hike the Triple Falls Trail. On the way up, we climbed over a tree that had fallen across the path, and we marked this place for our return trip. We hiked past steep cliffs（悬崖）and thick trees and lunched at Triple Fall. On the way back, we walked for what seemed like a very long time, expecting to see the fallen tree any minute.
We rounded a bend; finally, there it was——by then I was hot and ready to go home. At the same time, we crossed paths with a man and a child. I stepped aside to make room for them, my eyes were still glued to (全神贯注) the tree.

Waiting for help wasn't a choice. I wasn't used to this sort of emergency--I'd never been trained as a lifeguard-but I didn't think twice about trying to save them. I supposed in a way I wanted to impress everyone: at 19, a deal like that can seem like a good opportunity to show off.
Moises and I dived into the water and it took us 10 minutes to get to them. When we finally reached them, they were almost lifeless with only their heads coming in and out of the water. We could tell they were still alive from their small breaths but it was clear they wouldn't have been able to stay there much longer. I held the boy and pulled him over my board. Moises moved the girl onto his board. We discussed pushing them back to the shore, but we were too far out.
