More than 30 years ago, As a teenager, I lived with my family in an old farmhouse in the Durham County countryside. I spent my summer days laboring in tobacco fields and my summer evenings shelling(给...去壳)peas in the backyard. My autumn weekends were often spent splitting logs and cutting wood. We had an indoor antenna(天线)which helped us tune into the few television stations we could receive.

Living where we did, we could see three or four other houses from our own, none of them within shouting distance. We knew our neighbors, some of them elderly, we usually offered them our kindness when they needed help.

Jimmy, who was seventy years old, lived alone on the far side of a tobacco field. He lost his wife two years ago. He could hardly supported himself these last couple of years since his body condition was getting even worse. We went to visit him at his home. It was a small wooden cabin with stained windows and a curtain that had been mended countless times. The poor old man would sit in an armchair by the window, holding a faded photo, and with tears in his eyes, recall happy memories of his wife.

One weekend, my father went to check on Jimmy. But a rare heavy snow happened to fall. It was so heavy that he couldn't get his old truck up Jimmy's rutted, snow-covered driveway, Nobody could understand what made him slog(奋力前行)the 400 yards or so to Jimmy's house. My brother and I were waiting anxiously at home. After a long time, he came home hurriedly and told us that Jim my was sick and out of firewood.

When I was ten years old, I lived with my family in a small house in rural South Jersey. I often accompanied my mother to the A&P to buy groceries. Without a car, we walked, and I would help her carry the bags.

My mother had to shop every carefully, as she was a waitress, and her salary barely sustained (勉强维持) us. One day, while she was weighing prices, a promotional display for the World Book Encyclopedia (百科全书) caught my eye. The volumes were beautifully cream-colored. Volume I was ninety-nine cents with a ten-dollar purchase.

All I could think of while shopping was the book. I stood at the register (收银台) with my mother, holding my breath as the cashier rang up the items. It came to over eleven dollars. My mother produced a five, some singles, and a handful of change. As she was counting out the money, I somehow found the courage to ask for the encyclopedia. "Could we get one?" I said, showing her the display. "It's only ninety-nine cents."

I did not understand my mother's increasing anxiety; she did not have enough change and had to sacrifice a large can of peas to pay the amount, "Not now, Patricia," she said sternly. "Today is not a good day." I packed the groceries and followed her home, upset.

The next Saturday. my mother gave me a dollar and sent me to the A&P alone. Two quarts of milk and a loaf of bread — that's what a dollar in 1957. I went straight to the World Book display. There was only one first volume left, which I placed in my cart (购物车). I didn't need a cart, but took one so I could read as I went up and down the aisles. A lot of time went by and I knew I had to leave, but I couldn't bear to part with the book. With no detective in sight, I, impulsively (冲动地), put it inside my shirt and zipped (扣上拉链) up my jacket. I was a tall, skinny kid, and I am certain the shape of the book was obvious.

Paragraph1:

My heart beating rapidly, I headed for the register.

Paragraph2:

Back home, I told my mother what I had promised the detective.

Sally was only eight years old when she heard Mommy and Daddy talking about her little brother, Georgy. He was very sick and the doctors told them that only a very expensive operation could save his life. However, his family could not afford it. Sally heard Daddy say sadly, "Only a miracle (奇迹) can save him now."

Sally went to her bedroom and found her piggy bank. She shook all the money out on the floor and counted it carefully. Then she put all the money in her pocket and made her way to a drugstore (药店). She waited patiently for the storekeeper to give her attention, but he was busy talking to another well-dressed man. Sally cleared her throat. No good. Then she took out a coin from her pocket and threw it onto the glass counter (柜台). That did it!

"What do you want?" the storekeeper asked angrily. "Can't you see I'm talking to my brother?" "Well, I want to talk to you about my brother," Sally answered back bravely. "He's sick, and I want to buy a miracle." "I beg your pardon," said the storekeeper.

"My Daddy says only a miracle can save him now, so how much does a miracle cost?"

"We don't sell miracles here, little girl. I can't help you."

"Listen, I have the money to pay for it. Just tell me how much it costs."

Then that well-dressed man asked, "What kind of miracle does your brother need?" "I don't know," Sally answered. Tears started to rush into her eyes. "I just know he's really sick and Mommy says he needs an operation. But my family doesn't have enough money, so I have brought all my money. I love my little brother." "How much do you have?" asked the well-dressed man. "A dollar and eleven cents," Sally answered. "And that's all the money I have."

One day, a poor boy who was trying to pay his way through school by selling goods door to door found that he only had one dime left. He was hungry so he decided to beg for a meal at the next house.

However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so she brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, "How much do I owe you?"

"You don't owe me anything," she replied. "Mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness." He said, "Then I thank you from the bottom of my heart." As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but it also increased his faith in kindness and the human race. He was about to give up and quit before this point.

Years later the young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where specialists can be called in to study her rare disease. Growing up, we didn't have much money. Actually, we had very little. We lived in a small house with holes in the floor. We wore old clothes and had little food. With three little mouths to feed, my daddy worked as a gatekeeper in a middle school and then farmed our own small field until dark. Daddy provided the best he could for us and mama made our clothes on her old sewing machine. We could have easily applied for welfare, but my parents wouldn't think of it. Our family was full of love and proud of hard work.

Then I was in the third grade, in Mrs Harper's class. One day, Mrs Harper brought a huge box or toys to school to give to "poor" children. Everyone was invited to bring some of his or her own toys from home to put in the box. Needless to say, I had hardly any toys of my own to offer.

My eyes got big the next day when I looked into that box. It was like a dream world to me — so many colorful toys! Clearly, Mrs Harper saw the curious look on my face, and although I never asked with a smile, she let me pick out two toys for myself from the box. I was so thankful and thought that I was the luckiest girl in the whole world!

When I got home, I couldn't wait to show mama what I brought from the school. She admired the toys and asked where I got them. I told her about the box for the poor children and that Mrs Harper had let me pick two toys from the box! Mama thought for a few seconds and said in a very sweet way, "No ... no, you can't keep these two toys."

Mary waited anxiously for her turn in the empty dressing room. Never had she been so nervous before. This competition was of vital importance to her comeback. "If I can win today," she said to herself, "I can dance on the national stage next month." Three months ago, her left arm was seriously injured in a car accident. After the medical treatment, she began to recover slowly. She practiced over and over again in order to regain her dancing skills.

"Hi, Mary," in rushed her friend Jessica. "How is your arm? Is it going to influence your performance?"

"I guess it can be tolerated for I am to win the match." said Mary with a determined look.

"Admirable! But I hear that a girl called Linda is really gifted and strong. She can be your real wellmatched competitor. Come on!"

After Jessica left, Mary decided to practice her most difficult spin. "If I don't try harder, I won't grasp this chance." She thought. But her arm began to hurt, making her worried. "Mary, what makes you think you have a chance tonight?" she said to herself. After the pain was gone, she continued to warm up.

A slim girl hurried in and put down an equipment bag on the chair. Then, she took out her dance dress quickly and put it on skillfully. Seeing Mary, she smiled politely and said "Hi, I'm Linda. I am the next one!" Mary nodded in reply but felt uncomfortable. "This is just my competitor. Because of her, I may lose the game tonight. " Her mind was wandering when Linda let out a scream, "Oh, I can't find my music tape!" Linda searched her bag but in vain. "It may be missing on the way." With these words, she then rushed out.

As a sixth grader, I began noticing how other kids were separating into groups. I wasn't sure where I belonged. I found it hard to fit in.

Our teacher had assigned "secret friends” for the coming week. She wrote each kid's name on a piece of paper and threw them into a glass; then we each closed our eyes and drew the name of a classmate who we were to secretly befriend and support over the next five school days. By the middle of the week, everyone, including me, had turned this assignment into a contest to see whose secret friend could leave the best gift. We left cards, pens and even money. It seemed that everyone was getting cool presents from their friend except me.

On the last morning of our assignment, I walked into my classroom and noticed there was a package. I opened the wrapping paper and inside was a box of powder(胭脂粉).The girls sitting near me laughed the gift I had received. To make matters worse, the powder had already been opened.

I tried to forget about the embarrassing gift, but when I was in the bathroom during the break, the girls who had seen me open the powder started speaking ill of my secret friend of giving it to me. I quickly joined in "How terrible," I heard myself saying "What could my friend be thinking by giving me such a stupid gift? My grandmother wouldn't even want it." The girls laughed at my remarks and rushed out of the bathroom. I stayed to wash my hands and let the water run through my fingers as I thought about what I had just said. It wasn't normal like me to say mean things like that about someone.

Then I saw my classmate Janet come out of a bathroom booth(厕所隔间),tears streaming down her face.

Along with my apologies, I explained the reason.

In 1985 my parents made the big move from Illinois, to southern California, along with three very tiny children and all their household possessions. My mother had carefully wrapped and packed four boxes of her mother's hand-painted dinner china. Grandmother had painted this lovely set herself, choosing a forget-me-not pattern(勿忘我图案).

Unfortunately, something happened during the move. One box of the china didn't make it. It never arrived at our new house. So my mother had only three-quarters of the set—she had plates of different sizes and some serving pieces, but missing were the cups and saucers (茶碟) and the bowls. Often at family gatherings or when we would all sit down for a Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner, my mother would say something about the missing china and how she wished it had survived the trip.

When my mother died I inherited Grandmother's china. I, too, used the set on many special occasions, and I, too, wondered what had happened to the missing box.

I love to visit flea markets (跳蚤市场), hunting for treasures. It's great fun to walk up and down the streets early in the morning, watching as the vendors (摊主) spread their wares on the ground.

I hadn't been to a flea market in over a year when, one Sunday in 2013, I got the itch to go. So I crawled out of bed at 5 a. m. , and drove an hour to the Giant Rose Bowl Flea Market in another town. I was looking around and after a couple of hours I was thinking about leaving. I rounded the last corner and took a few steps down the street when I noticed some china spread on the floor. I saw that it was hand-painted china…With forget-me-nots! I raced over to look at it more closely, and picked up a cup and saucer. Forget-me-nots! Exactly like Grandmother's china, with the same delicate strokes (笔画)and the same thin gold bands around the edges. I looked at the rest of the items—there were the cups! The saucers! The bowls! It was Grandmother's china!

Two Thanksgiving Day Gentlemen

Stuffy Pete sat down on a seat in a New York City park. Every Thanksgiving for nine years he had sat down there in the afternoon, waiting for the Old Gentleman, who would lead him to a restaurant and treat him to a big dinner. That was a thing that the Old Gentleman was trying to make into a tradition, for it was a chance to ease the poor man's suffering from hunger.

But today Stuffy was not hungry. He had come from a dinner which had not been expected. On his way he passed a large house, whose owners also had a deep love of tradition. They invited the first hungry person who walked by into their house and offered him a very big dinner. Stuffy happened to be that person.

He had come from a dinner so big that he had almost no power to move. His breath was short. His body had suddenly become too big for his clothes.

Stuffy sat in the park, waiting. Finally, the Old Gentleman was coming toward Stuffy's seat. His hair was whiter. His legs did not seem as strong as usual.

As this kind Old Gentleman came toward him, Stuffy began to shake and his breath was shorter.

"If you will come with me, my man, I will give you a dinner that will surely make your body feel as thankful as your mind." The words themselves were almost a tradition. Always before, they had been music in Stuffy's ears. But now, with tears of suffering in his eyes, he looked up at the Old Gentleman's face.

Stuffy was very full, but he understood that he was part of a tradition. The Old Gentleman led Stuffy to the restaurant and to the same table where they had always eaten at. The waiters brought food, and more food. Stuffy began to eat.

The Old Gentleman sat at the table, watching with his eyes fixed on the inviting food and biting his lip. In an hour, the battle was finished. Then Stuffy stood up heavily. The Old Gentleman carefully counted out $1. 30. and left fifteen cents more for the waiter.

In the first and second grades,I was extremely shy. I had friends, but it just wasn't in my personality to be very outgoing, even if I knew someone well. I was even quieter with strangers, and so I wasn't very good at meeting new people. I was afraid that I would do or say something wrong.

So in our school's annual grand play, I usually sat in a secluded (僻静的) corner to watch the performance alone. I hoped to sit in the background and watch the actors sweat in front of all those pairs of eyes.

One day in the third grade, my teacher Mrs. Sally called me into her office and said, "Oh, Mary, you're great at memorizing things, and you have such a sweet personality. Perfect for Jenny!" But I bowed my head and dared not speak. The teacher saw this and then said, "Of course, plenty of girls would love the role, and 1 could find somebody else. But I hope you could try it for me. I had you in mind for Jenny while writing the play! If you really don't want to, I won't force you. It's your choice."

My mind was spinning faster than the windmill(风车) on the school playground. Mrs. Sally, whom I loved and admired, wanted me to play this role. She believed in me. My eyes moved across the room to a poster I had never noticed before. It showed a shooting star and read, "If you reach for the stars, you might at least grab a piece of the moon." I looked into Mrs. Sally's shining blue eyes and said, "Okay, I'll try." I realized it was time to throw off my shy mask and show the world who I really was.

In the following five months, the teacher taught me how to set, put on makeup, memorize lines, create costumes and so on. Gradually, I mastered my lines and songs.

Sophie was dressed and all ready for her very first dance recital(舞蹈表演). When she started dance class last year, she didn't know about the recital. She heard people talk about the recital but she didn't know what it was. The recital was a chance for all of the parents and grandparents to see the dance students dance. It was at the high school every year and Sophie was going to dance on the stage in front of everyone. She did not like the thought of that. It scared her.

Yesterday she practiced her dance for the first time on the stage. There were only a few moms watching so it wasn't too bad. But the thought of dancing in front of lots of people tonight was really scary.

"All ready to go?" Mom asked.

"Yes. I guess," Sophie said.

"You don't sound like you are ready. What's wrong?"

"I don't know. I don't feel so good. I'm kind of afraid."

Mom sat on the edge of Sophie's bed. "Remember yesterday when you practiced and I was right in the front row? You did just fine!"

"But today there will be so many people!"

"When you go out on the stage, you just look right where I was sitting yesterday. I will be in that same seat. You just look at me and it will be just like yesterday! Let's go!"

"What about the rest of the family?"

"They are coming in the other car. We have to be there a little early."

Sophie thought about what her mom said all the way to the high school. Mom was always right, but Sophie wasn't sure about this time. She still hated the thought of dancing in front of all those people.

When it was time for her to dance Sophie thought about what Mom told her. She sure hoped Mom was right. Her belly felt like butterflies were flying inside it. The music began to play.

It was an evening in July. The skies were darker than normal. Rain fell in big drops, thunder crashed in and lightning flashed across the skies. I shook with cold and fear as I walked through the streams of muddy water. Cars moved slowly because of the traffic jam, while passers-by were rushing by, completely wet in the heavy rain.

Along the way, I saw some schoolchildren grasping their heavy schoolbags and heading home. As more thunder crashed and boomed, I also sped up. Near a crossing, some road repair work was left unfinished. Obviously the workers had left in a hurry because of the storm. There were a few warning signs but it was hard to see what they said and what was on the road. I took a pace towards them — there were pieces of wood and metal as well as a hole which now was half-covered with boards.

I carefully avoided the possible danger and moved on. Seconds later, I stopped as I heard some sounds. They sounded like crying. I turned around, held my breath and listened, trying to figure out where the sounds were coming from, but all I could hear was the wind and the rain. "Maybe it is just the wind," I thought to myself and was about to leave.

"Help!" a loud and desperate scream came behind. Quickly, I turned back and traced the sound to where it had come from. My eyes fell on the place. It was horrible — one young child had fallen into the gaping hole in the road. My heart grew heavier. The boards had been moved away by the force of the rushing water and wind. I could barely see the child as it was dark all around me. I tried to save him, but all my efforts were in vain (徒劳). "Don't panic!" I pretended to be calm and shouted at the top of my voice. "I'll soon get you out of there."

Jimmy is an automotive mechanic (汽车修理工), but he lost his job a few months ago. He has a good heart, but he always feared applying for a new job.

One day, he gathered up all his strength and decided to attend a job interview in order to support his family. His appointment was at 10 a.m. and it was already 8:30. While waiting for a bus to the office where he was supposed to be interviewed, he saw an elderly man wildly kicking the tyre of his car. Obviously there was something wrong with the car. Jimmy immediately went up to lend him a hand. When Jimmy finished working on the car, the old man asked him how much he should pay for the service. Jimmy said there was no need to pay him, that he just helped someone in need, and that he had to rush for an interview. Then the old man said. "Well. I could take you to the office for your interview. It's the least I could do. Please. I insist." Jimmy agreed.

Upon arrival, Jimmy found a long line of applicants waiting to be interviewed. Jimmy still had some grease (油腻物) on him after the car repair, but he didn't have much time to wash it off or have a change of shirt. One by one, the applicants left the interviewer's office with a disappointed look on their faces. Finally his name was called. The interviewer was sitting on a large chair facing the office window. Fifteen years ago, I was born in a big family. I had been taught that money couldn't buy everything ever since I was a little kid. My parents are the most hard-working people I have ever seen. As much as my parents tried to teach me these values, some could only be learned through personal experiences.

As a child, I would sit in the church trying to concentrate on the words of the priest (牧师), but my attention was soon attracted by the shining gold and the diamonds worn by the Saturday churchgoers.  As my eyes began to wander, I noticed men dressed in their tailored suits and shirts accompanied by women in their designer dresses with matching handbags and shoes.

My family, on the other hand, was the opposite of rich. Our hand-me-down clothes had been washed so many times that the colors had become dull and lifeless. Although this revealed the money struggles of our large family, our faces were always washed and hair neatly combed. When sitting on the old big red and white truck after the service, I pictured the lives led by those driving their brand-new cars, wishing I would be one of them.

I never stopped those fantasies, even when I was in middle school. Since it was a private school, most of the children came from wealthy families. As a result, I constantly felt ashamed. Although I could hide my lack of wealth at school by wearing our school uniforms, my poverty was embarrassingly apparent on weekends with my classmates wearing designer jeans and I had no choice but to wear my sister's old jeans. I never fitted in with my classmates. To my relief, there was only one girl named Julie who opened her heart to me. I was attached to her like a shadow. Soon, her birthday was approaching. Julie invited me to attend her birthday party.

"Owwww!" Robert yelled, backing away from me." That hurt!"

"What do you mean? I just hit you with my jacket!" I said, laughing.

Robert was the smartest boy in my class, and I didn't mean to hurt him. Besides, it was just a lightweight jacket.

The next thing I knew, Robert was heading to the nurse's office. And I was being sent to the principal's office.

What would my parents say? How could a stupid jacket hurt anybody? Then it suddenly occurred to me that my brand-new yo-yo(悠悠球) was in my pocket. So I had hurt Robert not with my jacket, but with my yo-yo. As I crossed the courtyard to the principal's office, I prayed," Please don't let Robert be hurt too badly. And please don't let Mr. Sinclair call my mom." Then I reached the principal's office.

"What happened, Julie?" Mr. Sinclair asked.

"We were playing outside... and... I hit Robert on the shoulder with my jacket. I... um... I guess I had this in my pocket. "I opened my palm to show him the shiny red yo-yo I'd bought with my pocket money. "I'm sorry. I'm really sorry. I didn't mean to hurt him."

"I know you well enough to believe you. But Robert has a knot on his shoulder that's about the size of your yo-yo. His mother is very upset. She's taken him to the doctor.

My head hung so low. It nearly touched my knees. More than anything, I wanted to melt into a puddle and trickle away under the door.

"I'm sure you didn't mean to hurt anyone," Mr. Sinclair went on." But because Robert was injured, I have to send you home for the rest of the day. Please wait in the outer office until your mother comes to pick you up.

My eyes widened." Now I'm going to get it!" I thought. I had plenty of time to think while I waited for my mother. I was always trying to be the" perfect student". "What will happen now?" I wondered. I had never been in trouble at school before.

I'd just returned from a beautiful fall early-morning walk with my dog. At the front door, I dug around in my pockets for the keys. When I discovered I didn't have them, I decided to return to the paths we'd taken. I would surely spot them in plain sight. My little dog ran in circles of excitement that we would do a repeat of our just-finished outing. I spent an hour looking, brushing aside tall grasses, but the keys remained lost. I was beginning to get upset as I thought of the results of losing them, so I continued to look for them but failed.

Back home again, I pulled the backup key from its hiding place, let myself in the house, and fell on the chair in tiredness. The house key wasn't that important as I had an extra. The mail key was a big deal because getting a new one takes a lot of time. I had a spare car key, but there was often something wrong with it, and the key would be expensive to replace. But the iron heart made by my grandson was precious beyond measure. For some reason, thinking of it being gone forever made tears come to my eyes.

That night, it turned colder and we had a snow. I enjoyed a comfort-food dinner, played soft music, and settled into a peaceful evening until I heard the noise of my car alarm from the garage (车库). I rushed to the car, put the extra key into the door and finally opened it, and then I hurriedly tried my best to stop the alarm. I felt red-faced as I imagined my next-door neighbors being disturbed and annoyed.

I went back in the house but the alarm started again. I turned it off, went back inside, and the alarm sounded again. I repeated the process. Back in the house, I waited, but the next sound was the front doorbell. Thinking it was a neighbor ready to shout at me, I opened the door slowly and turned on the light with apologies ready.

My Kindergarten Hero

We had just completed a unit on community heroes, and I had given my kindergarten class a task to write or draw about their favorite hero. Each child was busy creating colorful masterpieces such as firefighters, policemen and doctors. Several students had chosen to draw larger-than-life brothers and sisters or moms and dads.

However, one little boy was having difficulty with the assignment. Cameron had touched my heart early in the school year. He had dark brown hair and wore his thick glasses. He looks like a younger version of Harry Potter at best. He often snorted (鼻息声) when he laughed, and the rest of the class would laugh along with him.

Cameron suffered from autism(自闭症), but that didn't matter to me or his classmates. We all loved him just the way he was. He was full of wonderful stories and brought a special feeling to our classroom. I sat and watched as Austin worked with Cameron. Austin had a wonderful way of interacting with Cameron and he helped him find his hero. Within a few minutes, Cameron quickly began drawing blue lines and curves on his paper—he was particularly fond of the color blue.

Finally, it was time for everybody to share their hero pictures. I listened as each student proudly stood in front of the class, picture held high, and described his or her hero. Several students described their heroes by giving them superhuman strength. It was finally Cameron's turn to share his hero. Cameron stood up and anxiously placed his large blue stick-figured drawing in front of his face. He then quickly burst out it was a picture of me. He added that I helped him learn things and then quickly sat back down. Tears began to form in the corner of my eyes, but nothing could have prepared me for what happened next.

Caitlyn stepped into the warm, wet sand and wiggled her toes. The white, foamy waves raced over her feet and up her legs and then pulled back again. Caitlyn loved playing in the ocean water.

"Ouch!" said the girl, as her foot stepped on something hard. She looked down. At the bottom of the ocean was a large shell. Caitlyn bent down to pick it up. It was a pretty pink conch shell with points and curves and an opening that looked like a horn. She held it up to her ear, hoping to hear the whooshing sound for which they were known. Instead, she heard something quite different.

"Hey kid! How are you doing? Want to hear a joke?"

Caitlyn nearly dropped the shell. Holding it back up to her head, she tried again.

"What's the most musical part of a fish?" the shell asked.

"I – I don't know," Caitlyn whispered.

"Their scales! Ha, ha!" laughed the shell. Caitlyn looked around to see if anyone was looking at her. They weren't.

"I'm just getting warmed up, kid! Why don't fish play basketball?" It seemed to be waiting for a reply.

"Uh, I'm not sure?" Caitlyn said. Was she dreaming?

The shell answered its own joke. "Because they are afraid of the net! Ha, ha!"   Caitlyn had to laugh. Okay, that was sort of funny.

The girl giggled. On and on the conch shell talked with her. For the rest of the week, Caitlyn would walk into the shallow water and sit with the shell held against her ear. She smiled and chuckled as it whispered corny jokes.

On the last day of her vacation, Caitlyn decided she couldn't leave the shell behind. "You're coming home with me," she said to the pretty shell. She thought it would be happy. It wasn't. "My home is in the ocean," it replied, without any laughter in its voice.

The event that stands out in Tom's memory happened one morning when Tom was only ten years old. He was at home with his elder sister Jane. Tom was doing his homework when he heard raised voices. At first he thought nothing of it since customers in the motorcycle shop directly below their flat often became loud, but he soon realized this time it was different.

"Quick! Quick! Remove the motorcycles from the shop." someone shouted.

Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When Tom opened the front door of their flat to investigate, a thick cloud of smoke greeted him. The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running and crying.

Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. They rushed out of the door and along the corridor(走廊) through the smoke.

They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Jane suddenly stopped. She turned around and headed back the way they came. Tom had no idea what she was doing, but he followed her.

Jane had suddenly remembered the lady in her 70s who lived next door to them, whom they called Makcik. Jane began banging on Makcik's door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around them, Tom could see many of their neighbors running for safety. The thought of fear crossed his mind.

"She might have run for safety like everyone else!" Tom cried. However, Jane refused to give up. "I know Makcik's still inside." She said she was familiar with Makcik's daily routine and was certain she would still be sleeping. She hit against the door. "Go downstairs. Go now! Go!"

Paragraph 1:

Tom noticed the flame was reaching up.

Paragraph 2:

Luckily, some neighbors passing by stopped and offered help.

The darkness was gathering as she wobbled (摇晃) in high heels along the side of the highway. The car had come to an unexpected stop, and like a normal teenager she did the only thing she could think of... get out and walk.

It was cold and late, and home was far away. This could be a long night. If only someone would stop and offer her a ride. She prayed for help and dragged herself forward.

The lights of a truck shone from behind as it approached. "Maybe he will stop," she hoped. The brake lights flashed on as it stopped. Next moment, the car door opened. A wordless invitation was extended and she understood. Without hesitation, the girl climbed up into the seat and closed the door. Slowly the truck pulled back onto the road and disappeared into the night, never to be seen again.

I woke up in a cold sweat, frightened. Was it a dream or was it a vision? It was unbelievably real, and the girl was my daughter! I jumped from my bed and ran to her room. Her bed was empty.

I stood in horror trying to think why she hadn't come home. As the mental fog began to lift, I remembered she was visiting her friend that evening. Perhaps she stayed there for the night. It was 1:30 am, but I raced to the phone and dialed a number.

"Hello?" The voice was heavy with sleep.

"Hey. Sorry to wake you. Becki didn't come home tonight and I was wondering if she stayed at your place."

"No, she left here a few hours ago. She should have been home at least by midnight!" The voice on the other end began to reflect my own panic.

Over the next forty-five minutes I alternated between lying in pray and pacing the floor in anxiety.

At 2:15 am lights appeared as a car turned up our long driveway. I could tell immediately that it was not my daughter's car.
