Yesterday a heat wave hit the town. "It's too hot! Let's go for a swim after we finish our chores (家务活) at home!" Joseph complained to his little brother, Loren. As the boys walked toward the Little Colorado River, they saw Sam and Frank, who ran to join them. "Swimming's just what we need to cool off!" Sam said, kicking a rock.

"Sure it is," Frank agreed. Then he looked at the field they were passing. There were many round watermelons in Farmer Davis's patch (小块地). "Hey, Joseph"  Frank said, "do you have the courage to climb over that fence and get us a ripe (成熟的) watermelon?"

"I don't know. " Joseph said.

Loren looked uncomfortable. "I don't think that's a good idea."

"Come on," Frank said, pushing Joseph toward the fence. "No one will ever know."

Then Frank started to climb the wooden fence. Joseph felt bad but climbed the fence and jumped with Frank into the watermelon patch.

Joseph took the closest melon and raced back to the fence. The other boys laughed and took turns carrying the heavy melon as they ran to the river. Finally they broke open the watermelon. The sticky sweet juice was delicious! But Joseph regretted what they had done and wished he hadn't taken the melon.

On the walk home, they finished off the last piece of the melon just as they passed the watermelon patch again. Joseph lowered his head quickly when he saw Farmer Davis in the field. He waved at the boys, who quickly threw the melon rinds (皮) to the side of the road. Davis looked upset as the boys hurried by. Joseph felt terrible. It was wrong to take the watermelon. He knew he had to tell Farmer Davis what they had done and ask for forgiveness (宽恕).

That evening Farmer Davis visited Joseph and Loren at their house. "One of my biggest watermelons went missing," he said, "I was wondering if you boys happened to see anyone in my field as you passed by today."

"I hate them! I really hate them!" shouted Tom angrily.

Tara and Mike looked at their friend. They couldn't believe it. He was really furious!

"Andy is OK now," said Tara, trying to calm Tom down.

The three friends were in the park after school. They were talking about their friend Andy. Andy was the youngest in the class and today two bullies (欺凌者) pushed him against a locker and hurt him. Andy fell and cut his head. Now he has five stitches (缝针) in his forehead.

Their school was a nice, peaceful place until Brian and Mark arrived a few months ago. Brian and Mark were bullies and their favorite trouble spot was the locker room. That morning their victim was Andy, maybe because he was smaller and younger than everyone else in the class.

The teachers knew that there were some bullying incidents at school. But most kids didn't want to report the incidents. So bullying at their school wasn't an" official" problem.

During the incident Andy cut his head. As soon as the bullies saw the blood, they disappeared. Andy called for help and a teacher came and took him straight to the hospital. But Andy didn't tell the teacher about the bullies. When the head teacher asked him, he simply said, "I fell and cut my head"

"Brian and Mark must pay!" repeated Tom. He was walking around in circles and hitting the palm of his left hand with his right fist. "Can't you see? You are behaving like the bullies," Tara said sadly. Mike looked at Tom, too, and he knew Tom very well, Tom hated violence. "bullying is not cool, ”said Mike, waving his arms like he was dancing. "We have to tell someone about this," said Tara. "Andy was hurt."

But right now, Tom had other things on his mind. He not only hated the bullies but also hated violence. He was in a dilemma-he wanted to fight Brian and Mark but he didn't want to fight with the bullies by violence.

Carter enjoyed riding the school bus home. The ride home gave him some time to relax after a busy day of fifth grade. He usually sat alone, and he enjoyed that too. With four siblings (兄弟姐妹) he didn't get much alone time.

The bus stopped and the tallest boy in his class, Dexter Fisher, stepped off followed by his younger brother, Billy. Their house was the last stop before Carter's house. As the bus pulled away, Carter looked back over his shoulder to watch the boys. Dexter was yelling and waving his hands at his little brother. Billy said something Carter could not hear. Dexter yelled something and gave his younger brother a hard shove (猛推) and knocked him to the ground.

Carter leaned toward the window to get a better view. Billy was still on the ground and Dexter was walking away. Carter watched as Billy wiped at his eyes. The poor kid was crying.

Carter turned in his seat. He felt nauseous (恶心的). He hated seeing little kids get picked on. It just wasn't right. The sight of Billy on the ground crying was burned into his memory. He tried to think of something else.

He thought of the model car he was working on at home, a 1967 Corvette. He started building it over a week ago and just finished putting it together last night. Tonight, as soon as he finished his homework, he could start painting the car. That was his favorite part. He already had the perfect color of blue picked out.

He hurried off the bus, ran through his yard, and breezed through the kitchen with a quick hello to his mom. She was making spaghetti. His favorite. It smelled delicious.

He ran up the stairs two at a time and rushed into his room.

"Surprise!" his brother Jackson said, throwing his arms into the air.

Carter looked down at his desk in horror. His Corvette! Jackson had painted it red. An awful dull shade of red that didn't look good on a car at all. Like the color of Dad's tractor!

A desperate call came into Jimmy Gilleece's bar. A newly married woman who had spent the afternoon at his dive(潜水) beach bar couldn't find her wallet. She didn't care about her ID, credit cards, or $150 in cash—but her wedding ring was inside.

Gilleece didn't like the idea that stealing could have occurred at his place, so he set out to find the wallet. He spent hours looking through footage(片段) from 16 different surveillance cameras(监控摄像头), watching the woman's every step in the bar. At 4pm, the woman went to sit on a bench outside the bar and left when her taxi arrived. Within minutes, a young man in a hoodie(连帽衫) approached the bench, put something in his pocket, and walked off. Gilleece posted a picture on the bar's Facebook page.

Within hours, Gilleece got a text from 17-year-old Rivers Prather, who'd heard about the post from his sister. Prather admitted having taken the wallet and told Gilleece he'd done it because he hadn't eaten in two days. He said he saw the ring but thought it was fake(假的), so he took the money and threw the wallet off the public docks(码头) into the ocean. Then he bought a sandwich. Gilleece, unsure whether he believed Prather, told the teen to meet him at the docks. There, they got to talking, and Prather told him that he wasn't getting along with his family and had been living in the woods for a week. Gilleece, a father of two, looked up and down Prather—his small figure, his red cheeks—and saw him for what he was: more of a kid than a criminal.

But the police were already on the case, and because of the missing ring, Prather could be facing crime charges. "He would be going to prison,” Gilleece thought to himself. "I had to help him somehow." So, Gilleece hired two divers to search the waters where Prather had thrown the wallet.

When Gilleece and Prather arrived at the docks at noon the next day, a policeman was already waiting there.

……

Just then a diver appeared out of the water.

In 1989 an 8. 2 earthquake almost flattened America, killing over 30,000 people in less than four minutes. In the midst of utter devastation and chaos, a father left his wife safely at home and rushed to the school where his son was supposed to be, only to discover that the building was as flat as a pancake.

After the unforgettably initial shock, he remembered the promise he had made to his son: "No matter what, I'll always be there for you!" And tears began to fill his eyes. As he looked at the pile of ruins that once was the school, it looked hopeless, but he kept remembering his commitment to his son.

He began to direct his attention towards where he walked his son to class at school each morning. Remembering his son's classroom would be in the back right comer of the building; he rushed there and started digging through the ruins.

As he was digging, other helpless parents arrived, clutching their hearts, saying:"My son!" "My daughter!" Other well-meaning parents tried to pull him off what was left of the school, saying: "It's too late! They're all dead! You can't help! Go home! Come on, face reality, there's nothing you can do!"

To each parent he responded with one line:" Are you going to help me now?" And then he continued to dig for his son, stone by stone. The fire chief showed up and tried to pull him off the school's ruins saying, "Fires are breaking out, explosions are happening everywhere. You're in danger. We'll take care of it. Go home. "To which this loving, caring American father asked, "Are you going to help me now?"

The police came and said, "You're angry, anxious and it's over. You're endangering others. Go home. We'll handle it!" To which he replied, "Are you going to help me now?" No one helped.

In a meeting room, I faced the judges seated behind a table holding my fate in their hands. These same judges had rejected me twice before. This was my last chance. Would it finally be my turn?

“Tell us, Jason,” one judge said, “why do you want to be Pistol Pete?” That summer I watched a cowboy football game. I was attracted by Pistol Pete. He was larger than our body. He could get everyone in the entire stadium on their feet shouting “Come on!” and make sure they had fun. Being the mascot (吉祥物) fit my personality. I loved getting attention—and a laugh. I didn't have the leg or the speed to play football. But no one could top me when it came to school spirit.

I entered a national high school mascot competition and finished twelfth. When tryouts (选拔) for Pistol Pete were announced during my first year at university, my academic adviser encouraged me to work hard at the mascot training. Then came the interview with the judges. The main question was, “Why do you want to be Pistol Pete?”

“Because I've been training for this all my life,” I told the judges.

The judges gathered the candidates to announce their decision. They'd selected two students. I could only watch as those two students jumped into the air.

I talked about my dream to my co-workers at my part-time job, and they were behind me 100 percent. When tryouts came the following spring, I was more than ready. Then I stepped before the judges again.

“You know me from last year,” I said. “You know how badly I want this. And you know how good I'd be.” I thought it was a done deal that I'd spend my senior year being Pistol Pete, living my dream.

One winter Sunday, my little sister, Colleen, and I built the greatest snowman ever.We gave him a carrot nose, beautiful hat, cozy scarf and gloves. He was a masterpiece(杰作).

The next morning when looking outside, we smiled lovingly at him over our meal.We gave him a highfive(击掌) as we passed by on our way to school.A lot of kids went past our house, so he was the hot topic at our school that morning. It was our pride!

The day dragged on until finally we could rush home. But as our yard came into sight, we saw something wrong. The snowman was gone! We only found a broken stick here, a torn glove there and balls of snow everywhere.Worst of all, the snowman's onceproud carrot nose lay limp(无力的) and halfeaten.

What had happened? We were both astonished and angry. But then, we were only kids, who wouldn't have anything taking away our happiness.Actually we knew only one thing: Our snowman would rise again. And so we rebuilt him.

The next day we came home to find another mess on the front lawn(草坪). For the rest of the week, the destruction was repeated daily. Each afternoon we'd return to find our snowman had fallen apart, and then we built again.

By Saturday morning, we had a plan.We borrowed a really big bucket(水桶) from Mom, filled it with water and left it outside. The next morning, it was frozen solid. We packed snow all around the ice block as the base(底座) of the snowman. Then we built the other parts of it once again. The trap was set, and we waited for the snowman bullies(破坏者) to come.

Ralphie was getting bored in his geography class. Mr. Hudson displayed a map of Europe up on the whiteboard, and asked someone to turn off the lights so they could see it better. "I'll do it," said Ralphie, and he put a paper spitball into a straw(吸管)quickly and blew it at the light switch. It missed, and landed in Mira's hair instead. Mira screamed in disgust. The other students burst into laughter. Mr. Hudson was annoyed.

"Detention(留堂), Ralph. " He wrote up a pink detention paper and slapped(拍)it on the boy's desk. Then he continued with his lesson.

"I was only trying to turn off the lights!" Ralphie protested. The teacher did not want to hear it.

"See you after school. Don't be late. "

Math class was next. Ralphie was pretty good at math, so he started to cheer up. He had done his homework, so when Mrs. Addison asked for a student to solve a problem at the blackboard, Ralphie didn't hesitate.

He jumped out of his seat and announced in a loud voice, "I volunteer as Tribute!" His friends burst out laughing. Mrs. Addison looked at him strictly over the tops of her glasses. Uh-oh, thought Ralphie.

"We do not yell in math class, Ralph. Not another sound out of you, young man." She turned back to the board.

"It's from The Hunger Games …" he tried to explain.

"That's quite enough! Detention, Ralph." The math teacher reached for her pile of detention paper and wrote his name down. "After school. Don't be late. "

"Oh man," murmured Ralphie. "How do I go to two detentions at the same time? "

When the bell rang at the end of the day, Ralphie went to see Mr. Hudson first. The teacher told Ralphie to sit down. The boy did so, and folded his hands in his lap for a minute or two. Then he raised one and said, "Sir? Can I be excused to go to the washroom?" Mr. Hudson nodded.

I am a proud mother of three children, my last little one being delivered in the middle of this difficult period caused by COVID-19. She was born in August and her name is Ada.

Shortly after having Ada, my mother-in-law Ann showed me something she learned in an art class she attended weekly. She showed me how to knit ( 编 织 ) a scarf. She patiently taught me how to use the stitches (针) and gave me her half done project.

I spent a lot of time attending to my sweet little girl, but I still had some extra time to do something with my hands throughout the day. 1 enjoyed making the scarf so I purchased tons of yarn (线) since it was winter. I wanted to make scarves for my three children as Christmas gifts.

There was a new family that moved in down the street. The only daughter of the family was Jane, a shy girl, aged 14, the same age of my oldest son David. It seemed that she came from a financially disadvantaged family, for she always wore old clothes. Worse still, in such freezing days, she had no more clothes to wear and trembled with cold.

Due to the disease, the society was thrown into crisis mode. Schools were closed, food supplies and deliveries were called off and children were stuck at home. In such discouraging times, however, they became good companions, talking and playing at home or around the houses happily.

It was dreadfully cold this winter. Every time David came back from outside, with red face, he always cried, "Mum, it is freezing outside!" Then, he came over to see whether I had finished the scarf. I could tell how impatient he was to wear my scarf sooner! I had to speed the project to satisfy his expectation. But David comforted me saying he could wait for a few days. What a kind and considerate boy he was! Then my great art project was finally accomplished on the morning ahead of Christmas.

On a Sunday morning, Tony woke up to a quiet house. Usually Mom was awake making breakfast and cleaning the kitchen, but not today. At the sound of his mom coughing, Tony knocked on her bedroom door and asked with great concern, "Mom, are you OK?" "Honey," Mom said weakly. "I have a terrible cold. You can have cereal (燕麦) for breakfast and watch cartoons. I'm going to stay in bed."

Tony poured some cereal into a bowl and ate the pieces dry. Mom must feel very bad if she was staying in bed all day. How could Tony help? First, he wiped up the crumbs (碎屑) of cereal he left on the kitchen counter. He also put away the cereal box neatly, so the kitchen looked just as it did when he woke up. But what else could he do? Tony thought. Sunday was the day when mom did laundry (要洗的衣物). Tony loved to watch the clothes spinning (快速旋转) in the machine. That should be fun! He ran to his room to get the laundry basket, in which there was his mother's favorite white dress, among other clothes and a pair of red socks.

Tony opened the door to the washer and put the clothes inside. He had watched Mom do laundry lots of times, so he knew where to find the washing powder and how to pour it into the machine. Finally, he closed the door and pressed the big button that said "START". Tony looked through the round glass window. Water was pouring in, and the machine was starting to spin, making his clothing tumble (翻滚) around. That was easy!

Tony watched cartoons until he heard the washing machine beep (发出哔哔声). That meant the washing was done. Tony opened the door to take out the damp clothes. He took out a few at a time and moved them into the dryer(脱水机). Everything seemed clean, and Tony felt proud. Then he pulled out a pink dress.

They don't mean it

Our family moved here from China two years ago, and we thought we were pretty well adjusted to American ways. This year my parents decided to give a party on Chinese New Year and invite some of our American friends.

The party went pretty well. Our guests were amazed at the flavor of all the special foods. After the dinner, they thanked us for showing them what a real Chinese New Year dinner was like.

"I loved the dishes. You and the girls must have spent hours doing all the work!" Mrs. O'Meara said to my mother.

"The girls helped with the cutting and I'm sorry they did such a terrible job." said Mother.

I heard a little gasp(倒吸气) from my friend Kim O'Meara, who stared wide-eyes at Mother. When I asked what the matter was, she told me she just didn't understand why my mother said so.

I had to laugh. "She doesn't mean it! It's just the way she talks."

Seeing her still confused look, I went on explaining, "In China, parents consider it good manners to deny praises about their children. Otherwise, it would be the same as bragging(自夸)."Kim seemed a little hesitant, but she nodded anyway.

That Easter, the O'Mearas invited our family for dinner. Mrs. O'Meara cooked a huge ham which we enjoyed a lot. As Mrs. O'Meara started cutting up the cake for dessert, Mother said, "I'm not sure if I can eat one more bite. That was the best ham I've ever tasted!"

"Aw, that ham was terrible," said Kim. "I bet you could do a lot better, Mrs. Yang."

Jonah would never forget how he managed to overcome his shyness and make new friends all because of the timely advice he had followed a month ago. He remembered that day clearly.

The bell for the break resounded (回荡) through the corridors(走廊) at Glendale School. Instead of heading to the canteen like the other children did, Jonah fled to the library. He pushed open the door and headed for the nearest bookshelf. Other than the noise of the air﹣conditioner, the library was quiet and there was barely a soul in sight. Far in a comer, he spotted the librarian, who seemed too busy shelving some books to pay any attention to him. The windows to the library looked out to the canteen. Jonah could hear children laughing and chatting. He wished he was outside playing with some friends but he did not let this bother him.

Suddenly, Jonah heard a sound in the corner. He turned around and saw the librarian walking towards him. "Hi, I'm Mrs. Lim." she greeted him with a smile.

"Um...hi, I'm Jonah, "Jonah said, his face flushed red with embarrassment.

"Why are you reading here when you could be playing with your friends instead?"

"Uh..."Jonah looked around the library, avoiding her gaze. He did not want Mrs. Lim to know the real reason he was in the library. She had the same look in her eyes as Jonah's father during the quiet car rides home from school. Jonah was helplessly tight﹣lipped whenever his father asked whom he had played or eaten with at school. From his silence, Jonah's father knew he was lonely. It was not that Jonah did not have any friends. They all just happened to live really far away. Jonah would stay up late at night chatting on the computer with his old friends from his previous school. Somehow, it made him feel close to them despite the distance. In this new school, Jonah found it difficult to make new friends. Everyone seemed to have different interests and their own circle of friends.

Paragraph 1:

"I know how you feel," Mrs. Lim said gently, as if she could read Jonah's mind.

Paragraph 2:

In the hallway outside the library, a boy from Jonah's class was picking up something on the floor.

When I was a boy of nine, I used to help Mrs. Long, a retired art teacher who lived across my home. She paid me very little for the help, but she taught me how to paint and promised me, "When Christmas comes, I shall have a present for you."

I kept wondering what it would be. The boys I played with had baseball gloves, ice skates and bicycles. I hoped that Mrs. Long would buy any one of them for me.

"But it would hardly be ice skates," I reasoned with myself. "An old woman like Mrs. Long wouldn't know much about ice skates."

I also ruled out the bicycle because she was just a retired art teacher in the local school and could not afford it.

On my last day at work, Mrs. Long said, "You've been a very good boy. On Christmas Eve I'll make a present for you. Please come to my house and collect it."

"Since she is going to have the present in her house, and since she will make it, unquestionably she is going to give me a pair of baseball gloves," I thought. Actually, I became so convinced that I could imagine myself playing baseball with my friends in those gloves.

A day before the Christmas Eve, I could wait no longer and presented myself at the door of Mrs. Long's house and said, "Can I have my present today, Mrs. Long?"

"I've been waiting for you," she said, leading me into her house. She sat me in a chair, disappeared to another room, and in a moment stood before me holding a package which under no circumstances could hold a bicycle or a pair of skates, or even a baseball glove.

I lifted it from her hand and found it was extremely light.

"What is it?" I asked with disappointment on my face.

"A kind of magic," Mrs. Long said. "It can give you whatever you dream of if you have learned how to use it."

Teddy was a bear of habit. Every morning he woke up at the same time, stretched, scratched, and yawned(打哈欠). Every morning the bees in his yard delivered three jars of honey so that Teddy ate the same breakfast he'd eaten since he was a hairy baby: toast with honey and tea with extra honey.

Next came his daily routine: practicing the rolling skill and running errands(做杂事). At night he'd read, and then have one last cup of honey tea before bed.

Life was sweet. Until one morning...

One morning something abnormal had happened. There was no honey. The bees had gone on strike!

Teddy's breakfast wasn't the same without honey. Without his honey tea, he couldn't practice rolling, or run errands, or read at night. Teddy became deeply discouraged.

Just then he heard someone say, "Hey, you! In the fur coat!" It was a very small bee with a very loud voice. "We need to talk!" said the bee.

"Talk? Hmmph!" complained Teddy. "I let you all live in my yard. All I ask for is a few jars of honey. You should be grateful rather than strike!"

"A few jars?" said the bee. "Buddy, we deliver three jars of honey to you every day, every month, every year! Do the maths, Einstein."

"The hive(蜂巢) is in ruins!" the bee continued. "It's all we can do to keep the walls from falling in! The roof leaks! Wind blows through the holes!"

The bee showed Teddy the garden. "Look!" the bee said. "Weeds everywhere. We have to fly miles away to find enough flowers to make our honey. So we voted to strike."

"You are taking us for granted." the bee declared. "You want honey? We won't come back unless things have changed. It's up to you, bear." And with that, the very small bee flew off.

The thought of losing his honey upset Teddy greatly. He sat down to think about the situation.

"Maybe I've been too selfish." Teddy said to himself, "I've never thought about what the bees need.

How can I make this right?"

I know what courage looks like. I saw it on a flight I took six years ago, and only now can I speak of it without tears filling eyes at the memory.

When our L3011 left the Orlando airport that Friday morning, we were a high-energy group. The early-morning flights hosted mainly professional people going to Atlanta for a day or two of business. And a couple of rows to my left, a seemingly 6-year-old kid nestled in her mother's arms.

Immediately the aircraft took off, and it was clear that something was wrong for it was bumping up and down and jerking left to right. But as experienced travelers, we just took these minor problems for granted. However, minutes after we were in the air, our plane began falling wildly and one wing lunged downward. The plane climbed higher but that didn't help.

The pilot soon made a grave announcement, "We are having some difficulties, " he said. "At this time, it appears that our hydraulic system (液压系统) has failed. We will be returning to the Orlando airport at this time. Because of the lack of hydraulics, we are not sure whether our landing gear (起落 架) will lock, so the flight attendants will prepare you for a bumpy landing. Also, if you look out of the windows, you will see that we are dumping fuel from the airplane. We want to have as little on board as possible in the event of a rough landing. "

In other words, we were about to crash. No sight has ever been so alarming as that fuel, hundreds of gallons of it, streaming past my window out of the plane's tanks. The flight attendants helped people get into position and comforted those who were already desperate.

As I looked at the faces of my fellow business travelers, I was stunned by their facial expressions. Many looked visibly frightened. Actually, their faces looked gray in color, something I'd never seen before. No one faces death without fear. I thought. All around, people cried, wailed and screamed.

I frowned as I watched the movers (搬运工) packing things into our space vehicle. It was bad enough we had to move, but to Mars. I was hoping to get a puppy (小狗)this summer, not a one-way ticket to a planet of red rocks.

"I know you're disappointed, Cassie." Mom said. "But I've been offered my dream job. And the rocket is first-class. We can travel Co Mars in eight days instead of eight months. We'll come back—finally."

As Mom went to answer a worker's question, I sat and pulled grass from the ground. There was no grass on Mars, I thought. Or flowers. Or animals. There's almost nothing alive on that red wasteland! If only Mom wasn't an aeronautical (航空)engineer and Dad wasn't a climatologist (气象学家). If they were roologisls, we could stay on Earth and hang out wilh animals!

Mom called, saying the vehicle was ready for launch. I walked slowly behind my parents. If only I had a puppy, then maybe moving to Mars wouldn't feel so awful.

The flight was fast! Soon we reached the red planet. Several of my parents' scientist friends welcomed us to space. We took a quick tour of the laboratories and everyone talked about things I didn't understand. Then, we paused at a door. Everyone stopped speaking and looked at me. Mom touched a button on the wall.

It was the night before Christmas and Rob was lying in bed, thinking about the next day. His family was poor, living entirely on the farm they ran, and most of the excitement of Christmas was in the turkey they had raised themselves and pumpkin pies his mother made. He rolled over to look at his old watch—it was two o'clock. Three hours later, his father would call him to get up, even if it was Christmas.

His father never talked about loving him—he had no time for such things. There was always so much to do on the farm. "Or, maybe, he just doesn't love me," Rob thought. He had a reason to think so. At 5 o'clock every morning, his father would call him to get up and help with the farm work. He had to go to the barn (畜棚) to hold the milking pails (挤奶桶) steadily when his father was milking the cows. He had to help put the tools in place and do the cleaning after the milking. He hated it that he had to do all these things at so early time.

He was not the only one awake at this night. He heard his parents whispering in the next room. "Mary, I hate to call Rob in the mornings. He's growing so fast and he needs his sleep. If you could see how he sleeps when I go in to wake him up! I wish I could manage alone. "

"Well, you can't, Adam." His mother's voice was gentle, "Besides, he isn't a child anymore. It's time he took his turn. "

"Yes," his father said slowly. "But I do hate to wake him."

When he heard these words, something in him spoke: his father loved him! He had never thought of that before, taking for granted the tie of their blood. Now that he knew his father loved him, he had to do something different on this Christmas. He did save and buy them each something every year, but he wished he had a better present for his father instead of the usual tie from the ten-cent store.

Mum and Her Bank Account(银行账户)

My family had the tradition to sit down by the kitchen table every Saturday night to count out the money Dad had brought home.

"These are for the rent, and these for the groceries." Mum counted out and divided the big silver pieces.

"I'll need a notebook." That would be my sister Christine, my brother Nels or me.

After Mum put one or two coins to the side for the notebook, she said that was all we needed to buy for the week and we all relaxed a little. We didn't have to go downtown and draw money out of Mum's bank account, which could always give us such a warm and secure feeling for having enough to afford the life.

When Nels graduated from grammar school , he needed some money for high school. We sat by the table and I offered my" Little Bank" which was used for sudden emergencies such as the time when Christine broke her arm and had to see a doctor. I laid the box carefully in front of Mum. After counting out the money in the little bank and finding there was not enough, we all agreed not to go to the bank but to find some ways.

Nels volunteered to work in Dillon's grocery after school and Dad said he would give up smoking. Now there was enough money. We felt relieved.

So many things came out of the little bank that year: Christine's dress for the school play, Nel's operation ... Whatever happened , we always knew we still had the bank to depend on. We never used her bank account.

That was twenty years ago.

Last year, I sold my first story. When the money came I thought of Mum's bank account.

The Subway Trail was named for its tunnel-shaped canyon (大峡谷). The hike there was described as "very tough", requiring "route finding, stream crossing, and climbing over big rocks". Nevertheless, I still decided to explore it with my friend, Jessika.

It was sunny when we set out from the trailhead (登山口) at 8 am. Halfway through our ten-mile hike, a light snow began to fall. Soon after, we entered the Subway. Standing in our way was a small pond. Because it looked shallow, we began to walk through.

However, about 1. 5 metres from the edge, my front foot suddenly sank into the sandy bottom. Then I fell forward, and both legs started to sink. The mud came all the way up to both of my legs. I freed my left leg but I couldn't move my right leg at all. Jessika handed me a long stick we'd picked up earlier. I jammed it down the side of my leg and tried to pull my leg out but failed. Jessika started removing sand with both hands, but it was refilling faster than she could pull it out. "Stop!" I shouted. "It's quicksand! You're wasting your energy. "Though the sinking stopped, it seemed impossible to get out.

The only phone reception was back at the trailhead, five hours away over rough areas. I told Jessika she had to hike back and call for help. She was scared—she'd only ever hiked with me and was afraid of hiking alone on such a difficult trail. But we were out of options.

Thirty minutes after she left, it started to snow heavily. I zipped up my jacket and pulled my head inside. Suddenly I fell backward. I urgently planted my stick into the dry ground and pulled myself upright. I was extremely tired. It had been about five hours since Jessika left, and it was getting dark.

I am a wolf. The forest was my home. I lived there and I cared about it. I tried to keep it neat and clean.

Then one sunny day, while I was cleaning up some garbage a campe(r   露营者)had left behind,

I heard footsteps. I leaped behind a tree and saw a rather plain little girl coming down the trail carrying a basket. I was suspicious of this little girl right away because she was dressed funny —all in red, and her head covered up so it seemed like she didn't want people to know who she was.

Naturally, I stopped to check her out. She gave me a song sand dance about going to her grandmother's house with a basket of lunch. She appeared to be a basically honest person, but she was in my forest and she certainly looked suspicious with that strange clothes of hers. So I decided to teach her just how serious it is to prance(腾跃;欢跃)through the forest unannounced and dressed funny.

I let her go on her way, but I ran ahead to her grandmother's house. When I saw that nice old woman, I explained my problem, and she agreed that her granddaughter needed to learn a lesson, all right. The old woman agreed to stay out of sight until I called her. Actually, she hid under the bed.

When the girl arrived, I invited her into the bedroom where I was in the bed, dressed like the grandmother. The girl came in all rosy-checked and said something nasty(肮脏的)about my big ears and made another insulting crack about my bulging(膨胀的)eyes. Now you can see how I was beginning to feel about this girl who put on such a nice front, but was apparently a very nasty person. Still, I've made it a policy to turn the other cheek, so I told her that my big eyes helped me to see her better.

注意:

1)续写词数应为 150 左右;

2)请按如下格式在相应位置作答。

Now, let's face it: no wolf would ever eat a little girl, but that crazy girl started running around the house screaming.

I'd like to say that was the end of the matter.
