We were bathed in the sunshine of weekend when an adventurous idea hit me, to go to Panisha Island for a brand new weekend with my brother Jack! Actually, Jack was a good partner, quick-minded and no-panic in trouble.

An adventure waited for us ahead. It was only a little after 12:00 o'clock and it couldn't hurt to go on a little exploration time. Could it?

We didn't want to play games at home anyway so I asked Mum, "Can we go to Panisha Island to explore?"

"Oh alright! I guess it's only a short boat ride away. Be back by 5:00 o'clock!" Mum answered us.

Thanked Mum and got on our blue bike. We got to the pier(码头) and bought a two-way ticket to Panisha and back. The sea air blew on our face like silk. I stared out into the sea. I must have stared for a while because soon I heard, "PANISHA ISLAND!".

The moment we got off the boat, we were fascinated with everything around, the clear waler, the blue skies, the singing of the birds… but we had no time to appreciate these. We impatiently rushed to what was called Tiger Jungle, surrounded by vast expanses of jungle with various puzzles and traps waiting for us to explore. Lizards, birds, and lots and lots of bugs…Suddenly a rabbit sprung out, staring at us, as if to ask us where we were from. Bees and spiders were also annoying to unprepared us. Seeing a snake winding its way in the bushes farther, I let out a scream! Jack smiled slyly(顽皮地) and commanded me to be calm.

A tough passageway led us to natural pools, shallow waters with fishing spots, overgrown bushes and even a plane crash site. "Why not catch some fish here?" I excitedly suggested. Jack was hesitating when a roar(吼叫), like a true tiger, came out from the farther jungle! Jack thought hard and decided to get back quickly.

读后续写

As I was coming into Middle School, Grade Six, I was really excited because my friend Jennifer was going to be in the same Middle School as me! At first things were great, she introduced me to her fiend, Amy and we had lots of fun together. Then things started to change. Jennifer was very controlling: I couldn't make new friends, because if I hung out with different people, she would decide that I was "mad at her and Amy". So I didn't make new friends, and pretty soon being Jennifer's friend became a battle between Amy and me.

Jennifer wanted to be the "leader" of our little group. Amy and I were never partners in class projects or gym; it was always "Who gets the privilege (荣耀) of being Jennifer's partner." It was either Jennifer liked me and she left Amy out or Jennifer liked Amy and she left me out. Amy and I both wanted to be Jennifer's number one. Being Jennifer's friend became the most important thing in the world.

I always waited for Jennifer and Amy after classes, so we could walk together to our next class. Amy and Jennifer chatted by Jennifer's desk as Jennifer packed her books up and I waited by the door. Sometimes when they left, they'd walk right past me. No "Thanks for waiting". No "Sorry we took so long". It was as if they couldn't even see me. Yet I still waited after every single class.

Most of the time we gossiped (传播流言蜚语) about people, and I soon realized that nobody was good enough for Jennifer. Jennifer had a list of bad things about everybody, even Amy. And I'm sure she had a list of bad things about me, too. After months of living through school this way, I had really changed. I was moody, depressed, lonely, and I didn't smile much. I spent lots of days trying not to cry. I felt so left out.

Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day, Robert and Henry were going home from school, when, on turning a corner, Robert cried out, "A fight! Let's go and see!"

"No," said Henry. "Let us go quietly home and not meddle with (插手) this quarrel. We have nothing to do with it and may get into trouble. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don't want them to worry about me."

"You are a coward, and afraid to go," said Robert, and off he ran. Henry went straight homeland in the afternoon went to school as usual.

But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn't want to play with him together.

Henry was sad but he wasn't angry with Robert for his rude behavior, because he learned that true courage is shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys' laughter and continued to go to school and study as well. However, Robert didn't invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn't go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.

A few days later, Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth. He struggled, and screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, but they did not even try to help him.

"Class, please line up! Let's welcome Marti," said Ms. Baroni, our tae kwon do (跆拳道) teacher.

I was excited that my best friend Marti would be taking lessons, too.

Everyone said, "Hi." Marti went red in the face.

"You don't need to be shy here," I said to Marti in a quiet voice. "Everyone's really nice."

After warm-up exercises, Ms. Baroni divided everyone into groups. Even though I was a level above Marti, Ms. Baroni told us to practice together. "Jenna, why don't you show Marti some basic kicks?"

I said sure and showed her a front kick. Marti copied it. Her kick was as high as my shoulder. "Great job, Marti! Let me show you something," said Ms. Baroni. She then spent the next five minutes working with Marti. I leaned (倚靠) against the wall and watched Marti copy everything Ms. Baroni did. The more Marti did, the more praise she received from Ms. Baroni.

I practiced my form half-heartedly. "What if Marti became better than me? What if Marti became Ms. Baroni's favorite student?" I couldn't help thinking.

"Watch your form!"

"Who is Ms. Baroni speaking to?" I wondered. I turned and saw Ms. Baroni looking directly at me. Nothing could have been worse.

At the end of class, I took my bag and hurried outside to find my mom. I had planned to wait and say good-bye to Marti, but now I wanted to be alone. For the next several weeks, Marti continued to impress our teacher with her skills. Honestly, I felt a little jealous (忌妒的) of her. And as Marti turned into a star student, I became less and less excited about tae kwon do.

One day, as we walked down the hallway at school, Marti said, "Ms. Baroni thinks I'm ready to take the test for the next level."

I was surprised. "It's harder than you think. Two judges other than Ms. Baroni will give you points," I said.

Marti looked disappointed (失望的). "You don't think I'm good enough to take the test yet?"

A Pleasant Beach Day

The day was beautiful! Janie and Jake's mom decided to take them to the beach. She even told them that since they had finished their chores without complaining, they could each bring a friend. Janice and Jake were excited! They loved the beach.

Janice decided to ask Harley to go since Haley had just had her over to play last week. Jake asked his friend Charlie—they went everywhere together. Once both friends had arrived, it was time to load up the van. The kids packed some beach toys they might want shovels, buckets, beach balls, and flippers. Mom packed a cooler with sandwiches and drinks, towels, sunscreen, and a chair for herself.

On the way to the beach, Jake and Charlie groaned. They had forgotten their boogie boards (小型冲浪板). Oh well! At least they had buckets and shovels they could use to build a huge sandcastle. Jake and Charlie loved to see how big they could make a sandcastle. They even liked to add roads and moats (壕沟) and lots of other details.

Once they reached the beach, …

Sam spoke with a stammer (口吃). Despite his condition, he was an outgoing boy and was never afraid to try new things. He strongly believed that where there is a will, there is a way.

Finally, the day for him to attend primary school arrived. He was a little worried and afraid but he did not let his feelings affect his positive learning attitude. As he entered the school gate of Flora Primary School, the noisy school campus greeted him. Students in the canteen were either enjoying the delicious food or talking happily.

Soon, the school bell rang and it was time for the students to return to their own classes. On Sam's way back to class, he met the principal, Mr. Teo. "Have a great first day in school, Sam! I am sure you will have lots of fun here," wished Mr. Teo.

He gave Sam a warm hug. The hug was all Sam needed to calm himself down as he felt he was ready to face the other students belonging to the same class as him.

In no time, the students of Sam's class were back in their seats. Sam was asked to introduce himself." Bu… but Mrs. Ta… Tan, I spe… speak wi… with a stam… stammer. The oth… other pup… pupils will defin… definitely ma… make fu… fun of m… me, " Sam stammered as panic and worry began to set in him. "I'm sure they will understand your condition. Just go ahead and take your time," Mrs. Tan gave him a smile.

It was terrifying. Forty pairs of eyes were glued onto him when he began his speech. "Calm down Sam, calm down," a voice broke out, Phew! It was just Mrs. Tan.

"Ha ha! Ha ha! Big baby Sam needs a teacher to calm him down and speaks with such a funny stammer. He should go back to preschool and learn how to speak," a few boys who were a little too tall for their age started to make fun of him. Upon hearing that, the entire class except Tom started to laugh,

One of my most memorable trips took place during the summer vacation about three years ago, when my sister, my aunt and I took a trip to Spain because we were moving. On the day of the trip, I lay in bed thinking about my friends whom I was going to leave behind and thoughts were flooding in.

When we arrived at the hire station, we seemed to have some problems with our luggage because it was too much for a taxi, so we had to book a van (厢式送货车)to lake our luggage to the airport. We waited for a long period to find a perfect van that would fit our luggage.

Before leaving, I fell very bad because I was going to a different country and was going to miss all my friends and family. I was not comfortable and cried.

The journey was almost perfect at the beginning, but soon it began to rain. Because of the rain, the drivers could not see far away, which caused a huge traffic jam. I was sitting by the window with a can of Coke that I had bought in the store earlier. My aunt and sister fell asleep, and during this lime, I felt bored and thought about other things that bothered me. My eyes turned to the mountain in front of us.

A bus suddenly appeared in the picture. It was very close to us. Cars sped past us without any speed limit. Beside me was a very deep lake: I wondered to myself what if something or someone fell inside it. Suddenly, a bus in front of our van stopped, and because it was raining heavily and the van was going fast, no one could see what was going to happen. Then, bang, we bumped into each other. Our van overturned, but luckily, it didn't fall into the lake. People came to help us get out of the van because we were blocked and the driver was half-dead.

An Act of Neighborliness

The skies were dark. A strong wind was blowing hard, cutting my face like a sharp knife. Rain fell in big drops and thunder and lightning flashed across the skies. I shook with cold and fear as I walked home, through the streams of muddy water. Some people were rushing by, completely wet in the heavy rain.

Along the way, I saw some schoolchildren holding their heavy schoolbags tightly and rushing home, I also saw that some road repair work had been abandoned by workers. Obviously, the workers had left in a hurry because of the storm. There were few signs and it was hard to see what was on the road. There were pieces of wood and metal and it looked like a hole had been dug and hurriedly covered with boards.

I moved on but suddenly stopped as I heard some sounds. It sounded like children crying. I quickly turned back and went back to the place from where the sounds came. I was frightened! To my sadness, I found that a small child had fallen into the hole on the road. The boards had moved away with the force of the rushing water. I could hardly see the child as it was dark all around me. I told he that I was going to look for help. I knew the neighbors well, and they all shared a sense of neighborliness, willing to give a hand.

The gray sky outside my kitchen window matched how I felt inside. Hopeless. I sighed and turned away. Life had lost all meanings.

Nearly a year earlier, on a sunny July day, I drove to a nearby lake to celebrate my birthday with friends and family. After a long workweek, I was looking forward to our picnic. And I couldn't wait to get in the water. I loved swimming. "Here I go," I shouted as I dived headfirst from a boat into the lake. That was the last thing I remember. I was pulled unconscious from the water with a severely damaged spine (脊柱), paralyzed from the waist down.

After months of treatment in hospital, I was finally home. But things weren't going well. I had to adjust to my disability and life changes. I was impatient with myself as well as my family. Turning from the kitchen window couldn't drive the grayness away. Oh God, what am I going to do? My life has fallen apart.

A few days later, I poured out my misfortune to Jery, a good friend and neighbor who came to visit in my front yard. "I don't feel like I have a reason to get out of bed," I told him. Jerry was quiet. His eyes were focused on my mulberry tree. "Look," he whispered. "There's a male cardinal. On that lower branch to the right." I saw the beautiful bird with its long tail, black mask and bright red feather. "They like to build nests in thick bushes," Jerry said, "and mostly eat seeds. They dine regularly at bird feeders, especially in the winter."

Cheer, cheer, cheer, the cardinal sang in a sweet voice. I'd seen such birds before. Now as I studied this one, I realized I'd never really seen a cardinal. He was amazing. Cheer, cheer, cheer, he sang again before leaping into the sky.

From that day on, Jerry continued to introduce me to various new birds, like the sweet-sounding nightingale and the elegant hummingbird. Curiosity, like a light, awakened inside me.

It was one o'clock in the morning. In the Ritesville town art gallery, a window opened and a man came in. His name was Harry Black, and he was a thief. It was dark in the gallery, but Harry had a light. He looked around the room for a painting.

"There it is!" he said.

Harry moved quickly across the room. He stood and looked at the painting.

"A million dollars for this?" he thought. "I don't understand it."

But he took a knife from his coat. Then he took the painting very, very slowly from its frame. Harry went back across the room to the window, but he walked into a table. There was a beautiful blue glass vase on the table. It fell onto the floor and broke into pieces. He ran across the pieces of glass to the window.

He had rented a room in Mrs. Allen's house. He went quietly up to his room and closed the door. In his room, Harry took the painting from his bag. He wrapped it in a newspaper and put it under his bed.

In the morning, Janey Allen was putting old bottles into a box. On the TV, a reporter was at the Ritesville town art gallery. He was talking about the lost painting and the broken glass vase. Janey glanced at a photo of a blue vase.

At that time Harry wasn't in his room. He was talking on his telephone. Janey was looking for old newspapers. Every Friday morning, she took them from every room in the house. Then later, the newspaper recycling truck arrived.

Janey opened Harry's door and looked into his room. She always took his old newspapers or bottles for recycling. She found a newspaper under Harry's bed. She put the old newspaper into a black recycling box. Then she ran from the house and saw the truck. "Wait!" she said. And she quickly gave the box to one of the men.

Last March, Margarito drove to visit his mother who lived in the countryside. When he set off for home, Margarito's mother looked at the dark sky and noticed the sign of a coming storm. Worried about her son's safety, she told him to drive as carefully as possible on his way home and he promised to give her a call upon his arrival.

With his mother's words in mind, Margarito approached the main road carefully. Soon, it started to rain heavily. Eager to get home, Margarito began to drive faster. Two hours later, he came to a bumpy mountain road that had been flooded by a creek (小溪).Margarito, driving a four-wheel drive truck, figured that he would be OK. At that moment, he didn't realize that such a thought would be a big mistake.

It was halfway across the creek that an unfortunate incident took place: The rushing waters grabbed hold of his vehicle, pushing it off the road and sending it down a rocky creek bed. The truck finally stopped some 80 feet away. Margarito's problems only grew from there as the water had somehow positioned the truck into the creek bank at a 45-degree angle, making it difficult for him to open the driver's side door. Injured and trapped inside with the muddy water rising quickly, Margarito was certain he was going to die. Shaking with fear, he was at a loss about what to do.

On the road right behind Margarito were a delivery worker named Steve and his nephew Mike, who were on the way to deliver furniture to customers in the countryside. They witnessed the horrible incident, and when Margarito's truck came to rest in the middle of the overflowing creek, Steve quickly began to take action. First, he grabbed a rope from the back of his vehicle and used it to ensure he could safely approach the truck.

WHAT KEPT THE NEW CHIMNEY(烟囱) WAITING

A new chimney was going to be built on Grandpa's house, and the boys were in a state of great excitement. They were always excited when something was going on. “This would be splendid,” Wayne said.

“Mike is coming, you know, to mix the mud and carry it up the ladder to the builder. He will tell us stories in the mornings,” Wayne told Casper.

“Yes,” said Casper, “and, Wayne, let's go get his tools and play we are his helpers, carrying his tools for him. Come on.” “Come on!” shouted Wayne. “The tools are placed against the kitchen wall, where he left them when he brought the things over.” On the way to the kitchen, they saw Grandpa bringing old Molly, their finest horse, to the big, blue cart(马车).That meant a beautiful ride down to the farmland. The boys forgot all about playing tool carriers. They climbed in and rode away.

“Mike is coming tomorrow, you know, Grandpa, and the builder,” said Casper. But dear old Grandpa shook his white head.

“Not tomorrow, boys. You will have to wait a bit longer. I sent word to the builder and Mike last night that they couldn't come for a few weeks longer. I have decided to put off building the chimney.”

Both the boys were disappointed.

Grandpa did not speak again at once. He was driving old Molly carefully out at the side of the cart road. The boys saw a little crippled(跛脚的) butterfly in the wheel track trying hard to spread its wings. That was why Grandpa turned off(拐弯). Grandpa's big heart had room enough in it for every live thing.

Back in the track again, further on, Grandpa said:“When we get home, boys, I will show you why we have to wait for the new chimney. You will agree with me, I know.” And Grandpa's eyes shone.

As a woman walked down the streets one day on a cold day in February, she spotted a beggar. The man looked dirty, and didn't even wear a proper coat. Every passer-by looked at him with contempt鄙视. Not like they had anything against him, but merely because of who he was: a dirty beggar.

"Sir? Are you all right?" The lady asked him. The old beggar thought that this well-dressed, obviously wealthy lady, was laughing at him." Leave me alone!" he shouted. She did not move." Are you hungry?" she asked with a gentle smile." No, I've just had lunch with the president." the beggar replied sarcastically(讥讽地). Her smile did not fade, and she tried to pick him up." What do you think you are doing, woman!" the beggar cried.

"Is there a problem ma'am?" a passing policeman asked." Not at all, officer. I'm just trying to get this man on his feet." the woman replied. Surprised, the policeman said:" That's old Jack, he has been here for years. What have you got to do with him?" "I am taking him to the cafeteria to get warm and eat something." the woman answered.

Angry, the old beggar now shouted:" Are you crazy!? I don't want to go in there!" But then he felt strong hands lifting him up." Let me go, officer. I didn't do anything!" After graduating from university, I decided to become a pilot and fly commercially. I chose a flying school which had a good reputation, enrolled and joined a class of six other trainees. We completed our ground school, where we were taught all the information we would need to fly an aircraft safely. The basics included the controls of the aircraft, its instruments and the rules we would have to obey while in the air.

Our instructors were all professional pilots and were very knowledgeable but also very strict. It was difficult for them to accept inaccuracy, so we were required to get Straight-A's in each test. It was explained to us that we could not afford to make an error as it could cost lives, so, to get my license, I doubled my efforts, learning the meaning of the word "thorough".

Later we had 10 hours of hands-on lessons in an exact model aircraft, a "simulator". My instructor sat next to me, watching my every move, always with a serious look. Sometimes I thought he over-reacted to my small mistakes.

The time arrived for us to take to the air for the first time. My instructor was an experienced pilot having flown big jets but was nearing retirement. As we went to take off, he pointed out the control tower and told me there was always a person on duty there for emergencies. I nodded firmly, but I never thought there was a chance I would have to call him on the radio.

We were away from our airfield and practising basic turns at about 6, 000 feet. Everything was going smoothly. Suddenly, my instructor started to shake and he put in his hand on his chest with his head falling forward. Thankfully, in control of the aircraft at that time, I steadied the aircraft and turned to look at him anxiously. He seemed to be unconscious. Our lives were in danger, and I had to put aside my uneasiness. It flashed into my mind that situations like this had been covered in ground school.

It was the day of the big cross country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route (路线) through thick evergreen forest.

I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence.

He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn't with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.

What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!

I quickly searched the crowd for the school's coach and asked him what had happened. "I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him," he explained uncomfortably. "I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide."

I bit back my frustration (懊恼). I knew the coach meant well-be thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.

David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that's all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.

Deborah was originally from Nebraska. She and her parents moved to California because her dad found a great job opportunity there. Deborah had to move to a new high school though. She missed all her old friends already, but was looking forward to meeting new people.

On her first day of school, Deborah introduced herself to the class. The guys in the class started whispering about how pretty she was. Some of the girls nodded in agreement while some of the girls just rolled their eyes in jealousy. After Deborah introduced herself, there was an announcement about Homecoming, a tradition welcoming back the students to school. The announcement invited all students to run for Homecoming Queen and King. Deborah would have run if she was back in Nebraska, but she didn't know anyone in California.

At lunchtime, a girl invited Deborah to sit with her and her friends. "Hi! You're new! I'm Kimberly. I'm in your homeroom class," she said. Deborah was touched by Kimberly's kindness. "You should totally run for Homecoming Queen!" Kimberly said. "I would, but nobody knows me. I don't stand chances," Deborah said. "Yes, you do. Everyone is already talking about you and calling you the Pretty New Girl. Also, the main competitor is Sarah, but all the girls don't want her to win because she won last year and she's really mean (刻薄的). " Deborah decided to run for Homecoming Queen after Kimberly said this. What's the harm?

Deborah was running for Homecoming Queen at the high school she just transferred to a few days ago. Deborah and Sarah put up posters. The poster had a picture of Deborah with her list of accomplishments and characteristics. Deborah was a pageant contestant (选美比赛) a couple of years ago, a 4. 0 student, and a volunteer at the animal shelter. Classmates came up to Deborah after school to tell her how great she was. Deborah thanked them.

On Saturday night, my best friend called and invited me to her birthday the next day. I was very excited to go there, but I needed permission from my parents.

I went to my dad's room and softly said, "Dad, tomorrow is my best friend's birthday and I really want to go." Papa said, "OK. I don't mind, but ask your mom."

I asked my mom and she said, "OK. You can go, but you have to be back before 10."

The next morning my mom was surprised to see me. No alarm. No Mom's warning. I just woke up by myself. Finally, the whole day had passed and it was party time. My dad dropped me off at my friend's place and told me that he would pick me up at 10. I said "OK" and ran away.

I enjoyed myself a lot at the party. We had dinner and played so many games. It was 10 finally. I remembered my mom telling me that I should be back before 10. I came out and started searching for my dad, but I could not find him. I was so worried and scared. I waited and waited, and then I started walking. I thought at least I could walk home as my house was 20 minutes away from my friend's. As I was walking, I was crying as I had never walked alone on the road that late at night.

Suddenly I heard someone shouting something. I was scared and started walking fast. I thought some criminal(不法分子) was there. As I was walking fast, I heard someone walking fast behind me. I started running and crying, and then I saw some parked cars. I hid behind the cars. I saw a shadow searching for me. I hoped someone would help me. After a while, I could not see the shadow, so I came out slowly and ran towards my home.

Chito Shedden was a simple fisherman and tour guide from Siquirres, Limon Province, Costa Rica. He had a broad range of interesting facts about nature, which helped his business quite a bit.

The year was 1989 and Chito was walking along the banks of the Reventazón River when he happened upon something very strange. There was a dying male crocodile(鳄鱼). When he stepped up to carefully examine the skinny reptile, he realized it had been shot through the head and then the left eye.

He knew, dangerous as it was, he couldn't leave the poor animal there, alone and helpless. Chito acted quickly, asking several brave friends to load the heavy reptile into his boat. He knew if he could heal it, he would then send it back into the wild. He named the huge reptile "Pocho", which means strength, and began to care for him in his own backyard.

The kind and helpful fisherman started to heal Pocho with medicine, food, and more importantly, lots of care and attention. Chito fed the crocodile a steady diet of chicken and fish. He bought medicine to prevent infection(感染) and even slept by his side at night.

Affection was one of the most important factors. Chito gave him kisses and hugs. He talked to him and petted him. "The crocodile needs my love to regain the will to live, " he said. In time, Pocho improved enough and returned to normal health. It was time for him to return to his own river in the wild. Chito and his friends loaded the crocodile back into his boat and set him free in a nearby river. The two parted ways and Chito returned home alone.

Arthur was messy. He didn't try to make messes, neither did he try to clean up much. His socks never made it into the hamper (洗衣篮). And he only picked up his toys when Mom threatened to throw them away. Most days, Mom followed Arthur around the house and cleaned up after him. She brushed the crumbs (碎屑) into her hand and threw them away after meals. She picked up his socks and made sure they got washed, dried and folded neatly before going back in the drawer.

One day, Mom asked Arthur to pick up his toy trains. He was reading a comic book and he was still reading, saying nothing. The trains had been on the living room floor since the morning.

"You know what, Arthur? I'm not going to ask you again. I'm done cleaning today." And with that. Mom put her feet up on the sofa and picked up a book to read.

At dinner time, Arthur noticed that there was a big pile of crumbs at his place at the table. After dinner, Arthur's feet felt cold. He went to his room and opened his drawer, but the drawer was empty. "Mom, where are my socks?" Arthur called.

"There weren't any socks in your hamper, so I didn't wash them," Mom said. Arthur felt unhappy. Now his feet would be cold, unless he wanted to wear dirty socks from the floor. He decided to stay barefoot.

When it was time for bed, Arthur said good night to Mom and turned to go upstairs. Arthur stepped right on his toy train in his bare feet. "Ouch!" cried Arthur. "That really hurt!"

Once upon a time, there were two brothers who lived on two adjoining (相邻的) farms. The elder brother is John and the younger one is Jack. One day they got a problem. It was the first serious disagreement in 40 years of farming side-by-side, sharing machines and using goods as needed. Clearly they could not get on well with each other like before and the long-time good relationship fell apart. It began with a small misunderstanding and then it grew into a big difference. Finally, they had words with each other followed by weeks of silence. No one was willing to be the first to accept mistakes or forgive each other.

One morning there was a knock on John's door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenter's toolbox. "I'm a carpenter(木匠) and I am good at making chairs, tables, and even bridges. Now I'm looking for a few days' work," the man said. "Perhaps you would have some small projects and I could help. Could I help you?"

"Yes," said John. "I do have a job for you. Look across the river at that farm. That's my neighbor. In fact, it's my younger brother! There was a piece of grassland between us. However, he recently brought his bulldozer (推土机) and now there is a river between us. Well, he may have done this to upset me on purpose, but I'll do more. See the wood over there? I want you to build a fence (篱笆), an eight-foot-long fence, so I won't need to see his place or his face anymore. "

The carpenter said, "I think I understand the situation. Show me the materials and I'll be able to do a job that pleases you. "

John had to go to town to buy something for his farm, so he helped the carpenter get the materials ready and then he left.

Paragraph 1:

The carpenter worked hard all that day.

Paragraph 2:

The two brothers stood at each end of the bridge. _
