Our team was playing softball against a team that we were tied with for third place. I was toughing out the position of catcher, and we were winning. However, my knees started to not feel so tough. In the bottom of the second round they had started to hurt.

I've had a bad injury in my knees, and I just couldn't take any more abuse to them that day. So I limped(瘸着走) over to the manager, who is also my dad, and told him that my knees were hurting.

I asked if he could have a back-up catcher for the rest of the game. He agreed and told me to put down the catcher's gear(设备).

The coach overheard this conversation and came running over. I could tell that he was mad at my dad's decision because he was steaming like a whistling teapot.

He yelled at my dad, "Are you crazy? It's not gonna do her any good!" My dad explained to the coach about my knees.

"So what!" The coach rudely yelled at my dad.

Then he furiously walked over to me. His face was red, and I could feel my heart pounding in my chest.

"You'd better get that gear back on and get back out there right now. If you don't, I swear this will be the worst softball season of your life! Every game! Every game you complain about your stupid knees! If your knees keep hurting so much, I don't understand why you even play! You certainly aren't even good enough!" he screamed at me.

For many years, I had a recurring (重复出现的) dream. I was a little girl again, rushing about, trying to get ready for school.

"Hurry, you'll be late for school," my mother called to me.

"I am hurrying, Mom! What did I do with my books?"

Deep inside I knew where the dream came from. It was about some unfinished business in my life. As a kid, I loved everything about school. I loved books, teachers, tests and homework. Most of all 1 longed to someday march down the aisle (通道) to receive my diploma. That seemed more appealing even than getting married.

But at 15, I had to drop out because my parents couldn't afford tuition. My hope of getting a diploma(毕业证书) was dead, or so I thought. Pretty soon, I married and had three children, and I thought: "There goes my diploma."

Even so, I wanted my children to be educated. But Linda, our youngest child, had juvenile arthritis (幼年型关节炎) in her hands and knees, which made it impossible for her to function in a normal classroom. I felt really sorry for her and I didn't want her to live her life with regret. I didn't give up hope of her being back to school in some way.

One day, I saw an ad in the newspaper for evening courses. "That's the answer," I said to myself. Linda always feels better in the evening, so I'll just sign her up for night school.

Linda was busy filling out enrollment (入学) forms when the secretary said: "Mrs. Schantz, why don't you come back to school?"

I laughed: "There's no way! I'm 55!" But he persisted, and before I knew what I had done, I was enrolled for classes in English and crafts. "This is only an experiment," I warned him, but he just smiled. So, I told myself to try for just a semester and to see if it would work. Anyway, my dream was still there in my heart.

Paragraph 1:

It was exciting to go to school again but it was no game.

Paragraph 2:

Linda and I helped each other through the time.

The Board Meeting (董事会) had come to an end. Bob started to stand up and pushed against the table, spilling (使溢出) his coffee over his papers. "How embarrassing. I am getting so awkward in my old age." Everyone had a good laugh, and soon we were all telling stories of our most embarrassing moments. It came around to Frank who sat quietly listening to the others. Someone said, "Come on, Frank. Tell us your most embarrassing moment."

Frank began, "I grew up in San Pedro. My dad was a fisherman, and he loved the sea. He had his own boat, but it was hard making a living on the sea. He worked hard and would stay out until he caught enough to feed his family. Not just enough for our family, but also for his mom and dad and the other kids that were still at home."

Frank's voice dropped a bit. "When the weather was bad, he would drive me to school. He would pull right up in front, and it seemed like everybody would be standing around and watching. Then he would lean over and give me a big kiss on the cheek and tell me to be a good boy. It was so embarrassing for me. Here I was twelve years old, and my dad would lean over and kiss me good-bye!"

He paused and then went on, "I remember the day I thought I was too old for a good-bye kiss. When we reached the school and came to a stop, he had his usual big smile. He started to lean toward me, but I put my hand up and said, 'No, Dad.' It was the first time I had ever talked to him that way, and he had this surprised look on his face.

I said, 'Dad, I'm too old for a good-bye kiss. I'm too old for any kind of kiss.' My dad looked at me for the longest time, and his eyes started to tear up. I had never seen him cry. He turned and looked out of the windshield (挡风玻璃). 'You are right.' he said. 'You are a big boy......a man. I won't kiss you anymore."

Ashwini was waiting at the door for her children, Amit and Anika. It was the last day of their exams and she had prepared tasty snacks for them.

"Mom, you know Rishit from my class? He always disturbed others during the exam and copied from therm.'

"Hey, let me speak now," Anika said and kept giggling all the time. "Mom, one of the girls in my class had prepared a matchbox instead of a soapbox."

The kids continued speaking, giggling, and enjoyed pizzas till late evening. Ashwini was pleased to know that her kids shared everything with her, If the kids faced any problem or had an interesting piece of news, they always shared it with their mother. They were not scared of or nervous about their mother.

In the vacation, Ashwini's elder sister, Sunita, visited their place along with her two kids, Pranjal and Kanchan. Sunita observed Ashwini's friendly behavior with her kids and opposed it.

"What is this, Ashwini? You never scold your kids. They are not scared of you," She said to her younger sister.

"Sunita, kids should never be scared of their parents. They should feel free when they communicate with parents."

"Weren't we afraid of our parents? Don't you remember you used to be nervous while talking to Dad? Yet we had better communication," Sunita argued.

"Well, we are not living in the same age. We need to be more open: minded with children now."

But Sunita was not satisfied with her explanation. She continued complaining about how Ashwini's kids were dependent on her mother for everything.

"Why do you have to prepare different dishes each time when they are hungry? Pranjal directly calls the nearby hotel and places an order. You don't have to spend time on it,"

Until Sunita left, she had almost brain washed Ashwini by constantly reminding her that she was not bringing up her kids properly. When Sunita left, Ashwini let out a sigh of relief

My school had a tradition. Every year during the eighth grade graduation, a beautiful gold and green jacket with the winner's name was awarded to the student who had maintained the highest grade for eight years.

I fully expected to win that jacket. I had been a straight A plus student since the first grade. But because I was born in a poor farmer's family, I couldn't afford a sports school jacket. This scholarship jacket was my only chance.

One day I was almost back at my classroom's door when I heard angry voices and arguing. I stopped. I recognized the voices: Mr. Schmidt  my history teacher, and Mr. Boone, the headmaster. They seemed to be arguing about me. "I refuse to do it! I don't care who her father is. Her grades can never compare to Martha's. I won't lie or falsify records." That was Mr. Schmidt and he sounded very angry. Mr. Boone's voice sounded quiet. "...Martha is Mexican...won't do it..." Hearing that, my eyes watered.

The next day, the headmaster called me into the office. He looked uncomfortable. I looked him straight in the eyes, but he looked away. "Martha," he said, "There's been a change in policy this year regarding the scholarship jacket. As you know, it has always been free. This year the Board decided to charge fifteen dollars. So if you cannot afford it, it will be given to …"

"I'll speak to my dad about it first, sir," I interrupted," I will let you know tomorrow." With these words, I rushed out and cried on the walk home.

When I got home, my dad was busy. I approached him and said nervously in Spanish, which was the only language he could speak, "Dad, the headmaster said this year the scholarship jacket was going to cost 15 dollars. Can you give me the money?" After a few minutes' silence, my dad turned to me and asked quietly, "If you pay for the jacket, do you think it is still a scholarship? Tell your headmaster we will not pay." I was angry with his words, but I knew he was right.

A Simple Thank

I have been in the teaching profession more than thirty years, and one of the best teachers I have ever known was Mr. Rowe. I was lucky enough to co-teach fourth grade with him.

Mr. Rowe had great patience and understanding and I learned so much from watching him. He could perform miracles, like the one he performed with Steven, one of the unhappiest kids I had ever seen. Steven couldn't stand school. He didn't like being picked last for kickball. He didn't like the kids who raised their hands and knew all the answers, and most importantly, he didn't like himself.

The first day he walked into Mr. Rowe's classroom, he ignored the other students, looking angry and annoyed, and sat into his chair, knocking a couple of textbooks onto the floor.

Mr. Rowe walked over to him and touched Steven's shoulder, but Steven pulled away. Nevertheless, Mr. Rowe welcomed him, "Hi, Steven. I'm happy you are in my class. We are gonna have a great year." Steven looked around the room as if Mr. Rowe must be mistaken. No teacher in his right mind would want Steven to be part of his classroom.

So, while Mr. Rowe seemed cheerful and relaxed that day of school, it seemed like Steven was angry and confused.

That day after classes, Mr. Rowe chose Steven to pitch the kickball at recess. "Hey, Steven," Mr. Rowe commented, "You are good at pitching. Let me show you my secret trick." Mr. Rowe taught Steven one of the tricks that not a single kid could perform. Steven learned fast and did quite well! Everyone cheered for him!

After the kickball, Steven sat as close to Mr. Rowe in classes as he could. When a question was asked, Steven lit up; he knew the answer! He raised his hands. When he answered the question, his voice shook. However, he got the answer right! He said, with Mr. Rowe, his days of the fourth grade promised wonderful.

That is not to say that every day went smoothly, but it was obvious that Steven grew to love Mr. Rowe more and more with each passing day.

That day, I drove my son to his university, which was about two hours' drive from my home. The school didn't open that day in fact. My freshman son wanted to go to the university a few days earlier so that he could do some preparation work and most importantly, some research work that was related to his courses.

Early that morning, Marie, my wife and I, together with my son Eric started from our home at Calari. Eric was really excited, since he would go to the university that he had been dreaming for since a child. We talked a lot and had a very happy journey. When we arrived at the university, we helped Eric settled in his dormitory, which was empty at the moment. The other students would not arrive until three days later, when the university was scheduled to open. Although felt a little lonely, Eric was happy and even excited for he would have enough time to launch his plan.

After a simple lunch, we had a short visit to the campus. There were old but wonderful buildings, which surely experienced time and weather. The big grasslands in the campus is lush and refreshing. Of course there were some modern facilities. The libraries, the gym and the playground were also attractive and encouraging. We also found a small store, where there were all kinds of items that students would need. I went into the store and bought some water in case we should need them on our way back home. The young man in the store was helpful and gave me his name card, obviously hoping I might need it.

We said goodbye to each other at about four and we directly headed home. At 11 o'clock that evening, I got a call from Eric. He said he suffered serious stomachache and might need to go to the doctor, but no one was around to ask for help. From his voice I could hear that he was really suffering. It seemed that he needed to go to the hospital right now. An ambulance may be too much, while it would took me two hours to get there. What could I do?

My family moved in a small house in Brighton, Colorado on my seventh birthday. My first memory is our neighbor Bill, an old man, handing me strawberries from his garden through a hole in the chain-link(铁丝网)fence. "We need to make the hole bigger, "he said jokingly. Later I knew that he lived alone.

Bill spent much time working in the garden, and I was always talking to him from our yard. I was a chatterbox. I think what drew me to Bill is that he never got tired of listening to me. I also think Bill saw a lot of himself in me—we were both lonely and anxious—and that may be why he always took the time to listen to me. It was a wonderful connection.

There weren't any kids of my age in the neighborhood, and my parents were very busy, so I mostly played in the yard with my dog. I had a lot of imaginary friends—a whole family, actually, with a wife, children, a best friend no joke. Weird kid.

One day, my parents asked Bill whether he'd watch me while they were away on business. This worked well for everyone, so it became a somewhat monthly occurrence. Bill had a spare room in his house, which became "my" room.

Bill promised to teach me to drive the lawn tractor(割草机)someday and I was always looking forward to it. In winter, Bill would attach a snowplow(铲雪机)to the front of the lawn tractor. I seriously told him that I would invent a better snowplow when I grew up. "Sure you will. You'll get a patent certificate. It takes a certificate to prove an important thing, "Bill said with a smile.

One snowy morning, an idea suddenly hit me. My parents were watching TV when I spit it out, "What if I adopted Bill as my grandpa?" My parents said I could go over and ask him.

Many people would feel surprised when they know I don't use a credit card. In fact, I did have a credit card. If it hadn't been for an embarrassing moment in a drugstore, I maybe still use one. But ever since then, I have formed a habit of keeping a record of the money I spent. And it was also from that moment that I learn to save.

It was about 8 years ago when I was staring out in my human resources career. One day I ran into a drugstore before work to buy some medicine. After J picked up the medicine that I wanted, I walked to wards the register and handed the cashier my credit card. She swiped. DECLINED, the register said. Of course I assumed it was a mistake. She swiped again. DECLINED. At this moment, my heart sank and panic soon set in. If any of you have ever experienced that you know that it's the worst feeling.

I was confused. I had just been paid a few days before, how could this be? I immediately walked over to my bank, which, thankfully, wasn't far away. The 5 minutes I had to wait were painful. When the clerk looked at my account the only information she was able to give me was the phone number of the lawyer who had requested the lien(扣押)on my account. I had no idea what alien was but when I finally did speak to the lawyer and asked what was going on, he told me, "They are from your school, St. John's University." I was even more confused. I didn't owe the school any money. I owed a small Fortune in student loans but those were being paid through Ed Financial. He, very rudely, told me that they were for parking tickets. Yes. I had owed about $3,000 in parking tickets that I somehow forgot about and somehow thought they would disappear. Well, here they were, five years later, holding me firmly.

It took me a long summer to pay that debt off. But when I finished paying it off, I felt I must work hard to pay off everything else.

AGIFT FOR GRANDPA

Summer vacation was coming. Jack and his brother Berlin were filled with excitement as they thought of visiting their grandparents again.

The big day came at last. After the happy family got ready, they set out for the grandparents' eagerly. On the way, the brothers were excitedly talking about the fun they had with grandparents.

A little blue house with a tall white chimney finally appeared. Behind the property was the forest carrying their good memories with Grandpa. They arrived at the driveway, at the end of which Grandma was waiting for them joyfully.

Jack and Berlin each gave Grandma a big hug and then swept to the living room, shouting excitedly "Grandpa, we are back!"

Seeing his grandsons, Grandpa was wild with joy and tried to get up with all his strength from the chair but in vain. A helpless expression flashed on his face. Grandma explained that his health was declining rapidly and maybe couldn't stand up on his own forever. But Grandpa declared stubbornly(倔强地), "I can! " Certainly, he was stuck in his boyish way. Mum and grandparents were happy to meet again after a long time. They sat together and chatted about what happened recently.

The brothers were soon bored with adult conversation, went out and wandered into the forest. Tall trees stretched up to the heavens with large branches crossing each other, while young ones rose straight like soldiers. Grandpa was once a great explorer full of wisdom. He could tell where the birds came from only by their calls and songs. The trees, birds, lizards, lots of bugs...How many merry moments they spent with Grandpa in the kingdom!

But now Grandpa couldn't get up, which made them worried. "We'd think out a way to cheer him up." Jack said. "Grandpa is a bird lover, and we can catch him a bird." Berlin suggested. "But he hates birds being caged!" Jack shook his head.

Then a bright idea came to Jack's mind. "Why not make a cane(拐杖)out of a young tree!"

We were three thousand miles away from home on a Random Acts of Kindness and Volunteerism Road Trip. We were short of money, so we had two goals today:

First: Try out our new "Smile!"signs and see how much kindness and joy we could spread in Pike Place Market.

Second: Raise at least $80 by doing street performances. Singing, drawing or storytelling. This would be enough for gas to Portland and a small hotel room.

We weren't sure how people would react to our signs. It's so easy to walk past a busy crowd, lost in your own world, refusing to make eye-contact with strangers, and feeling alone despite being surrounded, by hundreds of people just like you. Finally. I gathered courage to raise our signs and shouted, "Hi here" to a young couple. They looked over, confused for a moment, read my sign and broke into smiles. Then we saw more smiling faces in the crowd.

Before long, our signs were wildly popular. Tourists wanted photos with us. Strangers stopped to ask us about our signs. We told them the story of our acts of kindness road trip and listened to their stories, too.

Sometimes I'd see unfriendly faces and feel particularly nervous to show them my bright sign. But I was always rewarded with a big smile whenever I did so. Suddenly they were no longer faces of strangers but those of neighbors and friends. This world is full of good people we just don't know yet. We got so wrapped up in our wonderful "Smile!" project that we forgot the other goal. Before we knew it, the sun was setting and we had no money for our trip to Portland.

I was on my way to dinner last night when I saw her. She was selling skirts. She moved with the same ease and loveliness I often saw in the women of Laos. Her long black hair was as shiny as the black silk of the skirts she was selling. In her hair, she wore three silk ribbons, blue, green, and white. They reminded me of my childhood and how my friends and I used to spend hours braiding ribbons into our hair.

I don't know the word for "ribbons", so I put my hand to my own hair and, with three fingers against my head, I looked at her ribbons and said "Beautiful". She lowered her eyes and said nothing. I wasn't sure if she understood me as I don't speak Laotian very well.

I looked back down at the skirts. They were very pretty. I decided to buy one, and I began to bargain with her. It's the custom to bargain in Asia. In Laos bargaining is done in soft voices.

She smiled, more with her eyes than with her lips. She was pleased by the few words I was able to say in her language, although they were mostly numbers. We shook our heads in disagreement over the price; then, immediately, we made another offer and then another shake of the head. She was so pleased that unexpectedly, she accepted the last offer I made. But it was too soon. The price was too low. She was being too generous and wouldn't make enough money. I moved quickly and picked up two more skirts and paid for all three. She smiled and for the first time in months, my spirit lifted. I almost felt happy.

On a hot September afternoon, Peter and his friend Isabel were on their way to the library. When they passed by Tubman park, Isabel suggested cutting through it to get to the library. As they entered the park, the sight of the swings and the merry-go-round brought back a flood of memories of their childhood spent there. But now everything looked so old, sad, and dirty. Rubbish lay on the ground next to an overflowing trash bin. There were still young schoolchildren playing there but they had to avoid the rubbish that littered the playground. A little boy told them that the city took the other trash bins away and the remaining one never got emptied often.

As they headed toward the library, the two high school students wrinkled their forehead. In the library, they encountered Mrs. Evans, their kind-hearted fifth-grade teacher, retired yet still passionate. Mrs. Evans listened as Isabel and Peter eagerly explained what they'd seen. Finally, she recommended them to go to the City Hall to voice their concerns.

The next day, Isabel and Peter went into the building of the City Hall but were met with an impatient officer. They were informed that the city couldn't help with their problem due to a tight budget. Discouraged, they left and turned to Mrs. Evans for help.

Under her guidance, they decided to ask Go Green, a non-profit organization whose goal is to protect the environment, for help. "This group is good at raising money for projects just like yours," said Mrs. Evans. She promised to arrange them to present their ideas to Go Green. Hearing this, their face lit up.

Two main tasks remained ahead: researching ways to clean up the park and preparing a convincing presentation. As Isabel was good at researching while Peter always had a talent for speaking, they cooperated quite well. Isabel learned from a science magazine that a new type of trash bin can squeeze the rubbish down without being emptied often, which saves time, money, and energy. Based on this, Peter practiced his presentation over and over again.

At Dana's yard sale, Tim chose a baseball from the toys spread on the card table and asked about the price. Dana told him everything was a quarter except Nezumi, a cotton toy rat. It was grey with some cotton sticking out from the hole where an ear had been torn off.

"Nezumi is extra special, so he is ten dollars. He needs a safe new home, " Dana sighed. Tim laughed, saying he didn't have ten dollars. Dana laughed too and gave Nezumi to Tim as a free gift because he was her friend. When Tim whispered that it was sort of old,Dana said old toys were the best. She then invited Tim to her birthday party the next evening, adding that her parents were giving her a real rat for her birthday. Tim was amazed and asked if it was a live rat.

"Of course," Dana said.

At home, Tim's mother showed him the gift she had bought for Dana. It was a knitting spool (针织线轴) shaped like a mushroom. Mom said Dana could knit a scarf for her doll. Tim sighed that Dana wasn't a knitting kind of person but a rat kind of person. Mom laughed after knowing what had happened. Together they drove to the pet store, where Tim searched and searched and selected a clear plastic ball, in which the rat could run around on the floor safe from cats and dogs. Tim thought of Nezumi's ear and decided Dana's new rat would need this ball.

The next day, Dana brought cupcakes to the class. When she handed a cupcake to Tim,she asked if Tim brought Nezumi to school as Nezumi liked to ride in backpacks. Tim was at a loss because Nezumi was at home on his bed. Then Dana asked what gift he was giving her. Tim replied that it was a surprise. In silence they sat for a while before he heard Dana say her parents were giving her a new bike for her birthday instead of a live rat because they thought rats would bite things.

Going back to school in September is always cool. Seeing old friends and making new friends are really exciting.

Rebecca was an old friend of Sheila, her classmate. Sheila liked playing football, and Rebecca had the same hobby.

There was a new girl in the classroom. Her name was Mary Brown. Unlike the others in the class, Mary was very quiet. She always sat by herself during lunch. At playtime, she didn't ask anyone to play with her, and no one asked her to play with them either. Rebecca was thinking about going over to talk to her, but that was when they would be able to join a football team in the youth league. Rebecca was so busy that Mary was soon forgotten.

The teacher gave out some homework. It was a composition. Rebecca decided to write a piece about Fiona, which is a cat, a Christmas gift from her dad. As a result, everyone liked Rebecca's composition.

At lunchtime of the third day, Rebecca was about to talk to Mary when Sheila stopped her with an angry look towards the table where the new girl was sitting by herself. Rebecca walked away feeling so embarrassed.

She told her parents what had happened at school. Rebecca said, "I want to talk to a new friend, but I don't want to lose my old ones." Her father thought for a moment and asked, "Rebecca, what do you think courage means?" Rebecca replied, "Isn't that when our soldiers go to war to fight for us?" Her dad said, "Well, yes. That is one kind of courage. But to do something that you are afraid to do is a different kind of courage."

Rebecca's mum reached over, holding her daughter's hand, and said, "If Sheila is really your friend, she will understand and still be your friend. Just do what you want to do."

The Girl No One Talked to

Last year there was a girl at our school who hardly anyone talked to. I think it was because she seldom showered, so she kind of smelled bad. Her name was Cindy Lindburg. I didn't know exactly where she lived, but it must have been somewhere in the neighborhood because we always got on the school bus at the same bus stop.

Cindy Lindburg didn't have many friends. She always came to the lunch room alone and left alone. On the bus, no one offered her a seat, and she never asked because she was sort of a shy person. She seemed like a nice girl-who had an odor(臭味)problem.

One day,I was walking up to the bus stop and I saw Carl Littleton making fun of her. I couldn't hear what he was saying, but I saw the way he was laughing and rolling his eyes in his typical poking-fun-at-you way. I also saw how sad it made Cindy. Clutching her notebook to her chest like a shield, she stared at the ground and moved as far away from him as possible without leaving the bus stop entirely. As soon as I got close enough,I glared at Carl to make him stop laughing-even though I knew he probably wouldn't. He didn't. So I walked over and stood closer to Cindy so she wouldn't feel so bad. It was just one of those times when you knew someone needed someone to be a friend.

I didn't think she'd say anything, but she did. Her eyes peeked up from staring at the ground and as though she thought I'd be embarrassed if anyone heard her speak to me, she whispered, "Hi."

"Hi," I said. Then as loudly as I could,I said, "Don't pay any attention to Carl. His parents have been unsuccessful in teaching him some manners." Seeing she had company, Carl left.

The comment didn't even rouse a smile out of Cindy.

……

She looked up, studying my face to check if I was making fun of her.

It seemed I'd done everything I'd ever wanted to do in my life, but I had one regret. I was born in 1898, the oldest of five kids. Papa couldn't spare me to go to school, so I worked in the fields with him till I was 21 years old.

Everywhere I went, I learned some hard lessons about what happens to a man who even can't read the alphabet. People cheat you out of wages. They sell you a ticket to one city, take your money and hand you a ticket to somewhere else.

By 1928, I'd been wandering for nine years. I met a woman named Elzenia. We fell in love, married and moved to Dallas, where I got work fixing roads for the city. When Amelia, the oldest of our seven children, first went to school, I took my wife aside. "Elzenia," I said. "I don't want the kids to know I can't read or write."

In 1938, one day my boss called me in. "George," he said. "No one knows those machines like you do. I'd like to promote you." But my thrill and surprise were cut short when he said, "Fill out this application and we'll get you a raise." I couldn't admit the truth. I thanked him and walked out of his office. I did stay right where I was, until I turned 65 and my boss made me retire. But I didn't stop working. For the next 25 years, I lived a happy life, but it still seemed to me like something was missing.

A young fellow handed me a piece of paper. It's information about adult education classes. People can learn to read and write. Now I'm 102. I thought of my friends and neighbours and what they might think if they found out I couldn't read. After all these years, my secret would be out. But all my life I've wanted to read. It was high time for action.

New Year was just around the corner. I was second grade then, 7 years old. One day, on my way home from school, a lady gave me a piece of paper saying that the neighborhood was asking people to give New Year presents to those who needed them. When I got home, I showed my mother the paper and said that I wanted to take part in this plan. My mother thought this was a very good idea and encouraged me to spread kindness to others less fortunate than us. She said we would become "Neighborhood Angels (天使)".

Several days later, my mother said, "Get ready, and we will go." "Where are we going?" I asked my mother. "I will drive you to Boots Department Store to buy something you think would be suitable for a neighborhood present.", she replied. As we went into the store, my mother gave me £20 to pay for the present. Then she said, "I'll see you outside in the car." She left me alone to do the shopping. I was not used to buying things on my own, as I had always been with one of my parents before. Everything seemed very strange and confusing to me, but I carried on. I asked myself what I should buy and for whom. An idea quickly occurred to me. There was a poor boy called Ralph who lived in our neighborhood. I used to see him often without a jacket during the freezing winter months, so I decided, then and there, to buy him a warm jacket. I looked at many jackets and eventually chose a heavy blue one. The price was just within my spending limit. The assistant at the checkout asked, "Is this for someone?", as I paid for the jacket happily. I said it was, and she wished me a Happy New Year. I felt as if I were a real" Neighborhood Angel".

Paragraph 1:

That evening, my mother helped me pack the jacket in beautiful paper.
Paragraph 2:

My mother and I waited breathlessly for Ralph's front door to open and finally it opened.

Growing up, we didn't have much money. Actually, we had very little. We lived in a small house with holes in the floor. We wore old clothes and had little food. With three little mouths to feed, my daddy worked as a gatekeeper in a middle school and then farmed our own small field until dark. Daddy provided the best he could for us and mama made our clothes on her old sewing machine. We could have easily applied for welfare, but my parents wouldn't think of it. Our family was full of love and proud of hard work

Then I was in the third grade, in Mrs. Harper's class. One day, Mrs. Harper brought a huge box of toys to school to give to "poor" children. Everyone was invited to bring some of his or her own toys from home to put in the box. Needless to say. I had hardly any toys of my own to offer.

My eyes got big the next day when I looked into that box. It was like a dream world to me — so many colorful toys! Clearly, Mrs. Harper saw the curious look on my face, and although I never asked with a smile, she let me pick out two toys for myself from the box. I was so thankful and thought that I was the luckiest girl in the whole world!

When I got home. I couldn't wait to show mama what I brought from the school. She admired the toys and asked where I got them. I told her about the box for the poor children and that Mrs. Harper had let me pick two toys from the box!Mama thought for a few seconds and said in a very sweet way, "No…no, You can't keep these two toys."

Paragraph 1:

Mama explained to me that those toys were for "poor" children.

Paragraph 2:

Mrs. Harper said she understood what mama meant.

I had a dream from primary school: to work in television. My parents owned a little grocery store, so we were definitely not fancy people. Thankfully, my dad had raised me to have a lot of confidence. He often said, "You can do anything you want to do." My dad was particularly supportive. He was my steady rock——always there for me.

With his help and encouragement, I was admitted to the radio and television arts program at Ryerson in Toronto. I really loved the program and worked hard and I was named the most outstanding graduate. I felt like I was already living my dream. I began to think that maybe I could apply for an internship(实习资格) in CBC or CTV.

Luckily, Global Television had just started broadcasting in Canada that year. I thought to myself: I'm new and they're new, so if I'm going to get to know cone person at Global, it might as well be the president. I was scared, but I knew deep down inside that this was what I wanted. When I called my dad and told him my plan, he said, "Good, Faye. That's exactly what you should do. "

With my heart just about pounding out of my body, I called up the president of Global Television. Suddenly Mr. Slaight was on the phone. "I've heard that your studio facilities are amazing. I could come at eleven o'clock on Monday or eleven o'clock on Sunday for a tour. What would suit you better?" I caught him totally off guard. He stuttered a bit, and then picked a day. When I hung up, I was scared but excited.

I arrived at the studio on the appointed day. When Mr. Slaight took me around, he looked at me and said, "What do you want?" He sounded furious but curious. "All want is a chance to audition(试镜). I just want you to know my face. That's all I'm asking. "

I didn't know whether I'd ever hear from him again, but two weeks later, his secretary called, "Mr. Slaight wants to know if you'd like to come and audition for a new school life show." I immediately answered, "Sure!"
