The first time we set eyes on the beautiful dress “big Red. "father, mother and I were walking slowly through the freshly fallen snow on our way to Hubble's Hardware store on Main Street.

The colorfully decorated window display held the best toys ever and some other things. And hey were all placed pleasantly beneath the breathtaking dress of Big Red. Mother's  eyes were glued to the massive flame of red satin(绸缎),dotted with twinkling stars.

"My goodness, "she managed to say in dreamlike wonder. "Would you just look at that dress!" Then, totally out of character, mother unexpectedly danced on the slippery sidewalk. Beneath the heavy, grey wool coat that she had worm every winter for as long as I could remember, mother lost her balance and fell clumsily. Father quickly caught her.

Her cheeks redder than usual, mother blamed dad for laughing. "Oh, stop that!" she ordered, as my father swept the snow from her coat. "What a silly dress to be displayed there in the window of Eaton's!" she shook her head in disbelief. "Who on earth would want such a brightly-colored dress? It is too expensive. "As we continued to walk down the street, mother turned back for one more look." My goodness! You'd think they'd display something that a person could use!"

Christmas was around the corner and the red dress was soon forgotten. Mother was not the one to wish for, or spend money on, things that were not practical. "There are things we need more than this, "she'd always say, or, "There are things we need more than that."

Father, on the other hand, liked to buy things whenever the budget allowed. Of course, he'd get a scolding for his occasional spending like this, but it was all done with the best intention.

On our last trip to town before Christmas, we were driving up Main Street when mother suddenly exclaimed in surprise, "Would you just look at that!" She pointed excitedly as Dad drove past Eaton's." That big red dress is gone," she said in disbelief. "It's actually gone."

It was eight o'clock on a cold spring night. I was so tired. I had depended on a walking stick to go anywhere for seven weeks, recovering from surgery, and I couldn't find a way to cheer myself up.

The phone rang for the sixth time in less than an hour. We knew who it was. My mother had been suffering from dementia and mental distress. There was little we could do to help her.

As her eldest daughter, I tried my best to help her. Though we visited every few days, she believed that her daughters had not visited in months. She thought that her friend Jimmy never wanted to see her again, even though he called her and visited weekly. She had no idea that she had repeated the things she was about to say a hundred times today and a hundred times the day before. She had no idea that I had undergone surgery, nor could she remember her own granddaughter's name. She forgot most of her own past.

This time, I got angry with my mother. "Mom!" I shouted. "We care about you. We visited two days ago! Mom, you have to believe me, and if you don't, I cannot talk to you anymore!"

Silence. Then she said, "I am only calling to say hello. Why are you shouting?"

"I'm shouting because you keep calling me a hundred times every single day! I'm shouting because you are asking me the same question a thousand times every time you call me! I'm shouting because I have repeated the answer ten thousand times! I'm shouting because I don't know what to say!"

I sat on the sofa, realizing that my daughter was watching me. She heard me blame my mother, heard me lose my patience and say that someone I loved was a burden. I curled up on the sofa, upset.

Winter break was approaching, and all Scott wanted to do was go snowboarding.

Unfortunately, Scott's parents had different plans. They had booked a week long tropical cruise (热带船游). Scott hated warm weather and asked if he could just stay at his best friend's house 80 he could snowboard every day at the local mountain. His parents didn't want to hear anything of it. He kept debating them about the topic, but they would not change their minds. Family time was important to them, and it was tradition that they spend winter break together.

The week of the cruise arrived, and Scott continued to mumble(咕哝)his complaints as he and his family left their house to head south. Scott's dad told him that he would only make the vacation worse for himself if he didn't change his attitude and open his mind to a new experience. Scott still couldn't stop thinking about all of the snow he was leaving behind.

When they arrived at the port to board the ship, Scott had a hard time admitting that he was actually impressed with the size of the ship. He had seen the brochures but seeing the ship in person was a whole different animal. Then he remembered that the brochure said something about a surfing pool. Maybe surfing would be somewhat like snowboarding. After all, it involved riding a board.

Scott climbed aboard the ship with his parents, and then they walked around to check everything out. He couldn't believe how fancy the accommodations were. The dining room looked like a royal hall; the game room had all of his favorite games; the ship's deck (甲板) had several different swimming pools for different purposes. Then Scott saw the surfing pool. It was incredible. It wasn't a big pool, but it had big waves, and the young man who was demonstrating how to ride the waves made it look like a ton of fun.

My dream was athletics. By the time I was sixteen, I could throw a ninety-mile-per-hour fastball and hit anything that moved on the baseball field. One particular incident with Coach John changed my life forever.

It was the summer between my junior and senior years, and a friend recommended me for a summer job. This meant a chance for money in my pocket-money for a new bike and new clothes, and the start of savings for a house for my mother. When I told Coach John, he was as mad as I expected him to be. "You have your whole life to work," he said. Your playing days are limited. You can't afford to waste them."

"Look." Mom waved a flyer in front of the television. "Summer field trips for sixth-graders. Nature. Exercise. Fresh air."

"No, thanks," I said, still working the remote.

"You'll love hiking, Jimmy, she said. "Besides, couch potatoes need exercise."

"But —" "If you don't like the first one, you don't have to go again," she said before I could finish.

OK, I thought. Just one day.

That day was the hottest on record. The moment I woke up, I started to sweat. I got dressed. Long pants tucked into heavy socks, T-shirt, boots, backpack, water bottles. All required for the hike.

As we boarded the school bus, I met Mr. Hawkins, our guide. The bus finally stopped near a forest, and we got out. Our destination for the day was "the Lemon Squeeze." But I had no idea what that was.

We quickly started our hiking after we got off the bus. Ahead, some kid kicked an old tree stump. A girl suddenly screamed and ran. A buzzing noise grew louder. Wasps (黄蜂)! Mr. Hawkins drove away the wasps with his shirt and we managed to run away.

We continued hiking for another hour until Mr. Hawkins decided that we should stop for lunch. It was too hot for anyone to complain, because complaining would only make it worse. What's worst was more hiking. It was getting hotter and hotter. Mr. Hawkins kept telling us to keep drinking water to keep hydrated. We drank, and sweated.

Water was low. Up ahead was a crossroads.

"OK, folks," Mr. Hawkins said. "This heat is fierce. Do we finish, or do we take this shortcut back to the bus? It's a quarter mile uphill from here to our destination."

I closed my eyes. Please, someone, say GO BACK TO THE BUS! I didn't want to be the wimp (懦弱的人).

However, nobody spoke.

After a very meaningful conversation with my dad about the old days, we came up with an object that we both remembered clearly. It was my very first bicycle. My mind told me I got it when I was seven, who was cheated to ride it for fifty yards alone the first time I tried!

My dad put together all the small pieces of the bicycle from a beautiful material that he called, "Your own car." Of course I knew he had some magical ability, but I didn't think he could make such an awesome object. He added the seat and the pedals (踏板)so that I would not have any problems. My dad recalled the bicycle was the smallest he could find while I remember how huge it was. I was so afraid of it and there was no way that I was going to control that monster-sized material. The bicycle was left in my backyard as a decoration for a month because l refused to ride it. Honestly, I was scared to try it.

After a month, my dad gave me a lecture to teach me what being a man was all about. I was finally determined to try it. My dad was proud of me and I felt very manly. He and I went to the park to see what we could do there.

The park was empty when we arrived. I had no doubt that my dad told everybody not to be there because we had to use it. I felt sorry for other people, but I was proud to have such an omnipotent (全能的) person as my dad.

We found a smooth and open space. My dad was holding the back part of the seat to make sure I didn't fell. He promised me that I was not going to fall because he would be running right behind, holding the bicycle.

Pumpkin (南瓜) carving at Halloween is a family tradition. We visit a local farm every October. In the pumpkin field, I compete with my three brothers and sister to seek out the biggest pumpkin. My dad has a rule that we have to carry our pumpkins back home, and as the eldest child I have an advantage — I carried an 85-pounder back last year.

This year, it was hard to tell whether my prize or the one chosen by my 14-year-old brother, Jason, was the winner. Unfortunately we forgot to weigh them before taking out their insides, but I was determined to prove my point. All of us were hard at work at the kitchen table, with my mom filming the annual event. I'm unsure now why I thought forcing my head inside the pumpkin would settle the matter, but it seemed to make perfect sense at the time.

With the pumpkin resting on the table, hole uppermost, I bent over and pressed my head against the opening. At first I got jammed just above my eyes and then, as I went on with my task, unwilling to quit, my nose briefly prevented entry. Finally I managed to put my whole head into it, like a cork(软木塞) forced into a bottle. I was able to straighten up with the huge pumpkin resting on my shoulders.

My excitement was short-lived. The pumpkin was heavy. "I'm going to set it down, now," I said, and with Jason helping to support its weight, I bent back over the table to give it somewhere to rest. It was only when I tried to remove my head that I realized getting out was going to be less straightforward than getting in. When I pulled hard, my nose got in the way. I got into a panic as I pressed firmly against the table and moved my head around trying to find the right angle, but it was no use. "I can't get it out!" I shouted, my voice sounding unnaturally loud in the enclosed space.

Sedona hiking trails can be fun and relaxing, but sometimes can also be challenging and dangerous.

Rogers, 33, an on-duty airman, was in town from Colorado Springs for adventures on Sedona trails. Even he had just taken a sharp turn on his mountain bike in April 2020 when he was stopped short by the sight of a woman sitting on the side of the trail. She was cute and had long blond hair and big expressive eyes. What he didn't know then was that she was also in extreme pain.

Sydney Linden, 28, had been jogging down Adobe Jack Trail in Sedona, Arizona, for a picturesque sunset view of the Red Rocks when she hopped over a rock and her leg over extended on the landing. The pain was instant.

Her right leg collapsed and she hit the dirt hard. Linden tried to stand but collapsed. She wasn't sure if she had torn her ACL(十字韧带), broken her leg, or something else. All she knew was that the pain was a 15 out of 10.

Although it was spring, the Arizona sun beat down relentlessly(无情地). Linden dragged herself to the shade, as if an animal preparing to die. She'd called a friend, but after 30 minutes, her friend was lost. That's when she saw the mountain biker.

Rogers was trying to play it cool. He casually rode by at a slower speed, stealing a glance at the woman. Sensing her suffering, Rogers stopped and asked if he could help. Linden explained her situation and that's when he noticed the swelling under her leggings. She needed a hospital -- now.

Rogers helped Linden to her feet and they began the steep(陡坡)over the rocky region and desert bushes. It was a long way to go. Leaning on Rogers, Linden tried to hop along, but the pain was severe. She would never make it to the trailhead(登山口)this way.

When I was little, I lived in a house with a beautiful garden full of all kinds of flowers, and roses were the most beautiful of them. There was nothing I enjoyed more than sitting in the garden with my mother as she read stories to me. When I was in primary school and old enough to read, I enjoyed reading stories aloud to her.

I will never forget one day when I was in the third grade. I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had rehearsed (排练) my lines so hard with me. But no matter how easily I acted at home, as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator's (旁白、解说员)part to the play, and asked me to change roles. Her word, kindly expressed, still hurt, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.

I didn't tell my mother what had happened when I went home after school that day. But she sensed my pain. Instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to take a walk in the garden.

It was May and roses were blossoming and, under the trees, we could also see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) in the grass, as if a painter had painted our garden with red, yellow and green. I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion. "I think I'm going to dig up all these weeds," she said, pulling it up by its roots. "From now on, we'll have only roses in this garden."

"But I like dandelions," I protested. "All flowers are beautiful —— even dandelions."

My mother looked at me seriously. "Yes, every flower is beautiful in its own way, isn't it?" She asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased that I had won her over. "And that is true of people too," she added. "Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that." Relieved that she had guessed my pain, I started to cry as I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled reassuringly.

I reached into my backpack, feeling for my cellphone. I was tired of Aunt Letty talking on and on about her chickens, horses and cows. Worse, I was afraid of having to spend spring break at her farm.

In spite of my protest, my parents decided that spending time at the farm would be a great experience for me. My parents both grew up on farms and believed that responsibility, hard work and respect for the land were valuable lessons. "Lessons you need to learn, son," they said.

"So, have you ever ridden a horse?" Aunt Letty asked, trying to turn my attention away from my phone.

"Hmmm, no. But I've seen horses on TV," I answered, absent-minded.

"Well, we've got a nice horse I think you'll like. Hercules — sounds like a beast, but he's a gentle giant. The other animals have names too, but don't worry, you won't have to remember their names. If you show up at the gate with feed, they're happy!" she said smiling.

I glanced at my aunt, angry that I was expected to work. Vacations were meant for sleeping late, playing video games, and maybe skateboarding. I tried to text a friend.

"Phones don't work well out here. With all the hills and valleys, it's hard to get a connection."

I continued texting, but she was right — there was no cell reception.

The next few days were busy. We had breakfast before dawn. Then we went out to the barn to get the feed while the animals waited to be fed. The afternoons were occupied with hauling hay, clean-up, and caring for the animals. The animals depended on Aunt Letty, but they also provided her with affection and necessities such as eggs, milk and cheese.

At dusk, when the farm was finally quiet, Aunt Letty stretched her arms out and said, "Just take a deep breath of the sweet country air!" I, exhausted, was unable to appreciate my work.

Jose was a devoted teacher for a local high school in California. Unfortunately, with the money he earned, he couldn't support his family and extended family in Mexico and rent an apartment in California at the same time. Therefore, having failed to afford the rental of even a shoebox apartment, he had no choice but to live in his old car occasionally to make ends meet until he could find another place to live.

To make matters worse, he found himself living this unfortunate lifestyle after Covid -19 swept the world when California schools closed their doors following the outbreak. This left Jose with little means for making money. So at age 77, Jose ended up living inside of his car. For about two years he was homeless. Home was his car, and his car sat in a grocery store parking lot. During daytime he drove to different locations, looking for job opportunities while he spent most of his nights at the same parking lot, which gave him a sense of belonging.

At day time, he would lean his seat all the way back, so no one would see him because he knew he wasn't supposed to be there and worried the manager of the grocery store would drive him away. He was a man of self-respect and didn't want to turn to charity.

When Maggie, the manager of the grocery store did see Jose, she felt he looked familiar because she used to be in his class many years ago. One very hot morning, Mrs. Carr was occupied in doing housework in the kitchen, with her two kids Tom Carr and his sister Dot playing in the yard. Tom was nine years old, but Dot was only three, and Tom took very great care of his little sister.

Suddenly a man rushed hurriedly into the yard. It was Mr. May, who lived at the next station, which is a big farm in Australia. "Fire!" he cried, "Fire! One of the worst fires I ever saw in my life. Come along, Carr, and bring all your hands," Mr. Carr called his men out, and away they all rode. "Stay behind, sweeties!" warned Mrs. Carr from the window of the kitchen, continuing with her work

"Look there, Dot," said Tom, "the brown calf (小牛) has got out of the yard!" In the hurry of the men riding off to fight the fire, the gate had not been closed again and the brown calf was running away. Tom ran at once to bring the calf back. and Dot ran after him, About half a mile from the farm yard the open land came to an end, and the bush began. The calf ran among the trees, and the children followed.

The trees were not thick at first, and it was very easy to follow the brown calf through the bushes. But soon the calf ran into a deep valley, where Tom couldn't follow it. "Oh, what a pity. Dot," he said. "The calf is lost now; it will get away into the bush. But give me your hand. We must go home!"

Tom began to feel very afraid. If the fire came through the bush and caught them, he and his little sister could be burned to death. He tried to get on faster, but he could not find the way out of the bush. Tom took his little sister on his back, and carried her for a long way, tired and thirsty.

"Go Denny, go!" my teammates yelled.

The cheering from the my classmates grew louder as I reached the final turn. I found myself in the lead. I knew better than to look back at the runners behind me.  That would slow me down. Besides, I could hear them breathing. I launched into my sprint(冲刺).

I pumped my arms harder as I pounded down the straightaway. It made my legs go faster. I don't know what strange connection in the body makes that work, but it does. I threw my chest forward into the string. It dropped across my body.  I thudded to a stop.

I was breathing hard, but at least I was still on my feet.

"You made it in sixty-eight seconds," Coach Setlich told me. "That's good enough for third place overall. Nice job, Denise. "

I smiled and nodded, since I didn't have enough breath to answer.  I was exhausted but I had to walk slowly around so my muscles wouldn't tighten up.

A few minutes later, Coach Setlich found me resting on the high-jump mats.  She looked worried. "Denise, I need you to run the relay. Tracy pulled a muscle in the long jump. "

I pushed up onto my elbows.  "I'm not a sprinter."

"Not the sprint relay. The medley (混合接力). I want you to run the last leg (赛程).  Amanda and Cindy, each one hundred meters. Megan, two hundred meters, one lap (圈). "

I looked at her with horror. "You want me to run four hundred meters again?" I screamed.

She nodded. "We have a shot at second or third in the team standings if your relay does well." the coach's eyes glowed. Second place may not sound exciting, but we had been near the bottom of the standings all season.  Now in the league championships, we were definitely showing improvement. I struggled to my feet.  "Couldn't I run the two-hundred-meter leg instead?"

Coach shook her head.  "The other girls on your relay team are sprinters and they don't understand the pacing for the longer distance." she said.

Flying now has become a necessary routine these days, what once seemed to be a marvel that changed how we travel and what distances we can cover in a matter of hours. Our family shared this mood when we were boarding our flight early Thursday morning.

My mother, elder brother and I planned to fly to Hawaii and spent a few sunny days there. We took our seats in rear emergency isle of the Airbus A321 plane, while people on board were busy packing their belongings and getting ready for the flight. Soon after taking off, there was a troubling sound in the plane. People in the front seats started screaming and someone shouted "birds! birds!". The plane began rocking from side to side in an unusual pattern. I saw one of the flight attendants terrified, while restrained, the expression on face who seat in the same emergency isle as we did. My mother grabbed my hand and my brother became stiff and unresponsive. It was unusual to see so many people being scared and confused at once, everybody looking around in search of what might be going on. A moment later I felt a strong smell of something burning, and apparently somebody even started to cough. People at the front rows screamed that they see fire coming out of the left engine.

Suddenly, the chaos in the cabin was interrupted by the captain informing the passengers that a flock of birds collided with the plane during the take-off. Apparently, the damage was severe and the plane would not be able to turn around and land at the airport. My mother grabbed my hand and reached for brother's hand as well. A deep sense of fear and realization of a potential disaster descended on everyone on board. Flight attendants rushed to check if everyone was still buckled up and in a proper position.

I was sitting next to Missy in my ninth-grade world history class when Mrs. Bartlett announced a new project. In groups, we were to create a newspaper around the culture we were studying.

On a piece of paper, we wrote the names of three friends we wanted in our group. After collecting all the requests, Mrs. B. informed us that she would take into consideration the names we chose and would let us know the results the next day. I had no doubt I would get the group of my choice. Missy was one of my friends. I knew we had chosen each other.

The next day, I anxiously expected the class. After the bell rang, Missy and I stopped talking as Mrs. B called for our attention. She started to call out names. When she reached group three, Missy's name was called. "So I'm in group three," I thought. The second, third and fourth members of the group were called. My name was not included. There had to be some mistake!

Then I heard it. The last group: "Mauro, Juliette, Rachel, Karina." I could feel the tears well in my eyes. How could I face being in that group—the boy who barely spoke English, the one girl who was always covered by skirts that went down to her ankles, and the other girl who wore weird (怪异的) clothes. Oh, how badly I wanted to be with my friends.

I fought back tears as I walked up to Mrs. B. She looked at me and knew what I was there for. I was determined to convince her I should be in the "good" group. "Why?" I started.

She gently placed a hand on my shoulder. "I know what you want, Karina," she said, "but your group needs you. I need you to help them get a passing grade on this task. Only you can help them."

You never know the difference you might make unless you take the time to encourage someone.

I gave up the idea of being a writer the summer before I started college. I'd been writing since I was five years old. My little friends wanted toys at that time, but I just wanted paper. Childhood passed and a box of short stories gave way to my middle school days. I wrote for a magazine and by the time I was in my eighth grade, half of the annual publications were written by me. Sometimes I'd dream about being a novelist, writing books that everyone might read. My dad was always sure that it would happen. When he read my poems or stories, his eyes welled up. "That's beautiful, honey, " he always told me. "One day, the entire world will know what a gift you have." Those words encouraged me through high school to keep believing that writing was my calling.

But somewhere along the months of my senior year I became disappointed. The crazy injustice in this world—bad guys, getting back out on the street and doing harm again and again, changed my mind. "I'm going to be a lawyer in the future, " I told my parents. My dad's face fell, but he kept his smile. "Whatever you do, you'll be brilliant at it, " he said to me.

One of my first classes at college was Journalism 100. One day, the professor, Bob Scheibel, assigned us a story about an apartment fire. He gave us the facts and we had a few days to write a news story.

I was sure that I had got the facts right when I wrote the story. I didn't expect much feedback. But a few days later, Bob Scheibel asked me to talk to him after class. Questions raced through my mind. What had I done wrong? Had I got the facts mixed up? Did I miss anything critical in the details? Five minutes after the class, I found myself in front of the professor. His eyes met mine with great seriousness.

Jenny was very nervous. She had a swimming competition in the morning and could not sleep. She tossed and turned all night. She was no stranger to competition. In fact, she loved it. Jenny was very athletic and was not only part of a swim team, but a soccer team, as well. She even won a soccer championship with her teammates last year. But this particular swimming competition was important. She had made it all the way to the finals and didn't want to let her teammates down.

When her alarm went off at 6: 00 am, she hit the snooze button and rolled onto her side, wishing she could just stay in bed all day. Having slept so poorly, Jenny was not at all ready for the day. After a few minutes, she stretched her arms above her head and yawned before throwing her covers back and climbing out of bed.

She was terribly anxious about the competition, so much that she couldn't even eat breakfast. It felt as though she got butterflies in her stomach. Jenny's mother looked concerned. "You have to eat something," she said. "It's important to keep your strength up."

"I know, I'm just not hungry this morning," Jenny replied, picking at her eggs with a fork. All she could think about was facing the competition. What if she performed poorly? What if she disappointed her coach and teammates? She wouldn't be able to forgive herself.

Jenny's mom sensed her daughter's worry and gave her a comforting pat on the back. "You'll be great, dear. Just do your best. That's all that matters."

Jenny felt a bit of relief and appreciated her mother's kind words. But by the time she got to the athletic club where the swim meet was being held, that feeling of comfort had disappeared. She went to the locker room to prepare for the competition.

After filling out 50 applications, going through four interviews, and winning one offer, I took what I could get—a teaching job in what I considered a distant wild area: western New Jersey. My characteristic optimism was alive only when I reminded myself that I would be doing what I had wanted to do since I was 14—teaching English.

School started, I was teaching English. I worked hard, only taking time off to eat and sleep. And then there was my sixth-grade class, 17 boys and five girls who were only six years younger than me. I had a problem long before I knew it. I was struggling in my work as a young idealistic(理想主义的) teacher. I wanted to make literature come alive and to promote a love of the written word. The students wanted to throw spitballs(纸团) and whisper dirty words in the back of the room.

In college I had been taught that a successful educator should ignore bad behavior. So I did, confident that, as the textbook had said, the bad behavior would disappear as I gave my students positive attention. It sounded reasonable, but the text obviously ignored the fact that humans, particularly teenagers, rarely seem reasonable. By the time my boss, who was the headmaster known to be the strictest, most demanding and quickest to fire inexperienced teachers, came into the classroom to observe me, the students exhibited very little good behavior to praise.

My boss sat in the back of the room. The boys in the class were making animal noises, hitting each other while the girls filed(锉) their nails or read magazines. I just pretended it all wasn't happening, and went on lecturing and tried to ask some inspiring questions. My boss, sitting in the back of the room, seemed to be growing bigger and bigger. After 20 minutes, he left silently. Visions of unemployment marched before my eyes. I felt mildly proud that I got through the rest of class without crying, but at my next free period, I had to face him.

I didn't see the thin plastic tape running across the bread bag when I put the bread in my shopping cart or when I checked out. It wasn't until I unpacked the bread at home that I realized that I'd broken the rules again.

That stupid plastic tape joined the long list of mistakes I made in just one week of trying to eat plastic-free. Last month, I challenged myself to purchase a week's worth of food without bringing home any plastic. That meant no yogurt containers or plastic packages.

I chose a budget of $115(roughly half-way between the average weekly grocery bill for a family of two in Massachusetts). On Saturday afternoon, I pulled into the parking lot of a well-known zero-waste shopping center.

I started in the produce section, where I typically got a plastic bag of organic baby carrots. This time, I could not go there because every vegetable in the organic section was packed in plastic containers. But I found some beautiful carrots among the non-organic produce. Then I saw the plastic price labels hanging off their rubber bands. I rolled my cart past the green beans and grapes, all inside the plastic. I weighed loose apples, onions and sweet potatoes. My anxiety kicked in-a feeling that I wouldn't have enough. So, I bought a head of cabbage.

I tapped prices into the calculator on my phone. Leaving the produce section, I was in good shape, at $32. It was time to search for protein.

I headed to the meat counter. Again, everything was prepackaged in plastic. But the man behind the glass kindly agreed to put some chicken and meat, separately, in paper bags. Together they were $21.

Tofu, cheese, yogurt and pretty much everything in the dairy section were prepackaged in plastic. Even the bottled milk had a plastic cap. But there were lots of eggs in those paper bags.
