Kevin Adkins admits that when he lacks confidence, he uses big words to appear smarter, of which most people don't know the meaning. "Only when I need to impress the person. I prefer using big words," says the 45-year-old.

Adkins is not alone. Many people use longer words in place of shorter ones because they know, consciously or unconsciously, that when others form impressions of them after a glance or a short conversation, they often work harder to give the "right" impression. "People think, if I can show that I have a good vocabulary, I'll sound smarter says Daniel Oppenheimer, PhD, a professor of psychology at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. However, if the listeners do not understand those long words, he adds, it will leave a bad impression instead.

The truth is that it can easily go wrong. "It's almost a game that two people are playing," says Eric Igou, PhD, a social psychologist at Ireland's University of Limerick. "If the observer, person B, doesn't have the same theory, it can backfire." Person A may be regarded as showing off instead of being intelligent.

Using big words may also confuse listeners, which is definitely moving in the wrong direction, "People associate intelligence with clearness of expressions," says Oppenheimer. That's especially true when it comes to the written word. A small study in Applied Cognitive Psychology (应用认知心理学) found that the more writers tried to sound smart, the less intelligent they were considered to be.

So what can you do to sound smarter? Speak clearly and directly. Leave the dictionary at your desk.

  1. (1) Why does Kevin Adkins prefer saying big words sometimes?
A . He wants to make himself more easily understood. B . He believes that it is cool. C . He enjoys the feelings of being mysterious. D . He hopes that what he says sounds smart.
  2. (2) What is Professor Oppenheimer's attitude towards the behavior of using big words?
    A . Disapproving. B . Favorable. C . Indifferent. D . Cautious.
  3. (3) What does Eric Igou mean by saying "it can backfire" in paragraph 3?
A . It can catch fire. B . Person B can fire person A. C . It can deliver an opposite effect. D . The observer can also fight back.
  4. (4) What can we learn from the small study in Applied Cognitive Psychology?
A . The writer who never uses big words is more intelligent. B . The writer who uses big words the most is the most intelligent. C . People like the writers who only use short and clear expressions. D . The writers should avoid using big words often in their writings.

Have you ever wondered how an American high school is really like? A typical American high school has several large building and enough space for about 1,500 students. Every student is given a locker. When students first arrive in school, they go straightly to their lockers to put away or get their textbooks and to hang up their outdoor clothes. Though American textbooks are expensive, students would rather loan(租借) than to buy them. Students must pay back if they lose some of them.

In some schools, students are required to take one or more of the followed special classes: healthy education, physical education or foreign language studies. Students move to different classrooms for each subject. This is because each teacher has his own classroom. There is five-minute break between classes, to give the students the time to hurry to his next class.

The new study shows that we spend more time using the mobile Internet to read newspapers and magazines or do some other things. According to the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB), the average European spends 4.8 hours reading newspapers and magazines but 1.6 hours more using the mobile Internet per week.

The IAB questioned 15,000 people in 15 European countries, looking at how people were using the Internet and its influence on their everyday lives. It found that the mobile Internet is increasingly finding its way into the public awareness. Over 71 million Europeans now have Internet access on their mobile phones. In the UK, 10 million people now access the Internet through their mobile phones and spend 6.3 hours doing so per week averagely.

Unsurprisingly, young generations in the UK are leading the way, with nearly half of the country's 16-to 24-year-olds and a quarter of 25-to 34-year-olds using the Internet, spending 6.5 and 6.2 hours online each week.

Entertainment plays a main role in our mobile Internet lives, with one in five British people using their phones for online games, a third listening to the online radio and 39 percent watching films, TV or other videos at least once a week. One third of those using an Internet phone said they received videos, images or other multimedia on their mobile, and 61percent said they passed on the contents they had received.

From a communication point of view, 80 percent of those questioned agreed that the Internet had made it easier for them to stay in touch with friends and family.

Alison Fennah, director of the IAB, said the use of the mobile Internet had come to the point that marketers should be looking to strategies (策略) that connect them with consumers more effectively. "Better tools as well as improved consumer motivation that start coming together in 2011 can make a great difference to extending the online experience," Fennah said.

  1. (1) How long does a European spend on the mobile Internet per week according to the IAB?
    A . 6.4hours. B . 6.2hours. C . 4.8hours. D . 1.6 hours.
  2. (2) What do people mainly use the mobile Internet for?
    A . Communication. B . Entertainment. C . Study. D . Advertising.
  3. (3) It can be known from the passage that __________.
A . more than half of the people in the UK use the mobile Internet B . the Internet is the most effective way to stay in touch with friends and family C . the UK has the largest number of people who use the mobile Internet in Europe D . better tools and improved consumer motivation help extend the online experience
  4. (4) The author wrote the passage to tell us __________.
A . how to use mobile phones to surf the Internet B . newspapers and magazines will disappear soon C . more and more people use the Internet in Europe D . how the Internet influences our daily lives

What would you do if you had invited friends to your house and they asked you for directions? Well, you could draw a map! And, if you did, you most likely would include your street and theirs, as well as the landmarks between the two. Using these places on the map as markers, your friends can then plan the best route to take.

Generally speaking, a map is an illustration of the earth's surface, and a person who draws maps is called a cartographer. But how are maps made? In prehistoric times, hunters would sometimes draw their hunting territories on cave walls. In the millennia that followed, maps would have been painted by hand on various materials, including clay, ivory, and even the hide of an animal.

Fast forward to modern times. With the invention of such tools as compasses, telescopes, and sextants, cartographers were able to define and show distances much more accurately. Today, aerial photography, satellite images, and computer software such as Geographical Information Systems (GIS) have made mapmaking even more precise. For example, mapmakers are now able to illustrate the physical features of our earth. Using satellite images, they can create three-dimensional maps that exceptionally correct.

Do all maps show the same contents? No! There are many different types of maps. Physical maps give us views of the earth's continents, mountains, forests, and waterways. Political maps identify countries and their boundaries. Economic maps offer information about the agricultural products or minerals found in a certain region. There are also maps that detail the climate or the population density in a particular location.

Of course, there are maps that offer details other than those connected with land masses. Nautical maps, for instance, are important tools for ship captains. They include information about the depth of the water, land formations along the coastline, navigational dangers, harbors, and bridges. They also provide data on tides and currents, as well as the earth's magnetic field. Aeronautical maps help airplane pilots to determine position and altitude, and assist ground controllers in airport towers with planning and deciding the best route to a particular destination. In emergency situations, aeronautical maps can help responders locate an alternative landing area.

Today, people who have no special map training can observe the world from above without having to leave their homes. Most likely, you have used software such as Google Earth or Google Maps. Thanks to satellite images, we can now easily spot the smallest details of our house and environment by using the Internet. Not everyone, however, is fond of these tools, because their easy access may lead to violations of privacy. Lawmakers around the world are presently addressing this issue.

  1. (1) The author mentions inviting friends to your house at the beginning to indicate that ________.
A . details in maps matter more than land masses B . maps have a significant place in our life C . planning routes is the key to reaching destinations D . it is necessary to get satellite images accurately
  2. (2) Which of the following maps mainly focus on details?
    A . Aeronautical maps. B . Political maps. C . Climatic maps. D . Economic maps.
  3. (3) What is the main purpose of the passage?
A . To underline the importance of drawing maps. B . To compare prehistoric maps and modern maps. C . To appeal to address the issue of violations of privacy. D . To introduce the development and functions of maps.

Grandparents who help out occasionally with childcare in their community tend to live longer than seniors who do not care for other people, according to a study from Berlin, Germany.

“Having no contact with grandchildren at all can negatively impact grandparents' health. This link could be deeply rooted in our evolutionary past when help with childcare was important for the survival of the human species,” said Sonja Hilbrand, one of the researchers.

The findings are drawn from data on more than 500 people over age 70. Overall, after accounting for grandparents' age and general state of health, the risk of dying over a 20-year period was one-third lower for grandparents who cared for their grandchildren, compared with grandparents who provided no childcare.

Caregiving was associated with a longer life even when the care receiver wasn't a relative. Half of all childless seniors who provided support to friends or neighbors lived for seven years after the study began, while non-helpers lived for four years on average.

“Caregiving may give caregivers a purpose of life because they may feel useful for others and society. Caregiving may be thought also as an activity that keeps caregivers physically and mentally active,” said Professor Bruno Arpino.

Arpino noted, however, that caregiving is not the only activity that can improve health and that too many caring responsibilities can take away from other beneficial activities like working, being in social clubs, or volunteering. “Children should take into account their parents' needs, willingness, and desires and agree with them on the timing and amount of childcare,” he suggested.

“It is very important that every individual decides for himself/herself, what proper amounts of help means,” Hilbrand said, adding, “As long as you do not feel stressed about the intensity (强度) of help you provide you may be doing something good for others as well as for yourself.”

  1. (1) What is the caregiving study based on?
A . Human evolutionary history. B . Demand modern society. C . Social contact between relatives. D . Data on many elderly people.
  2. (2) In Arpino's opinion, childcare ________.
A . is sure to keep old people away from illnesses B . allows old people to live a more meaningful life C . creates more job opportunities for old people D . makes social activities inaccessible to old people
  3. (3) What does the underlined part “take into account” in Paragraph 6 probably mean?
    A . Consider. B . Ignore. C . Favor. D . Limit.
  4. (4) What does the last paragraph tell us?
A . Grandparents can do anything in their own interests. B . Grandparents should share more social responsibilities. C . Proper amounts of childcare do good to grandparents. D . Caregiving guarantees every grandparent a longer life.

Food festivals around the world

Stilton Cheese Rolling

May Day is a traditional day for celebrations, but the 2,000 English villagers of Stilton must be the only people in the world who include cheese rolling in their annual plans. Teams of four, dressed in a variety of strange and funny clothes, roll a complete cheese along a 50 metre course. On the way, they must not kick or throw their cheese, or go into their competitors' lane (赛道). Competition is fierce and the chief prize is a complete Stilton cheese weighing about four kilos  (disappointingly, but understandably the cheeses used in the race are wooden ones ). All the competitors are served with beer or port wine, the traditional accompaniment for Stilton cheese.
