After graduating from Ontario College of Teachers, I became a teacher at a one-room country school in Aldborough Township.

That first day of school as a 19-year-old female teacher was a frightening experience. It was one thing to have graduated as a successful student; it was another thing to face a classroom of little faces that were waiting for the "new teacher." I had a classroom of 21 children of different shapes and sizes. The youngest was five going on six and the eldest was 16.

There were two doors for entrance in my school, one for the girls, one for the boys and just inside each door was a chemical toilet—no outdoor facilities for us! The heat in the building was a wood-burning furnace(火炉) down in the basement. Tending the furnace was one of my responsibilities. Luckily, I knew a bit about starting a fire, so the school didn't burn down.

What I found most difficult was that a parent might take a child out of school for any reason. I had one Dutch family, whose father would keep the children out of school to help with the farm work. Finally, I got tired of this and sent an education officer to solve the problem. Needless to say, I was very unpopular with that father from then on, but the children came to school much more regularly!

In the classroom, the older students helped the younger ones with learning, as well as with putting on coats and hats. If someone's lunch was forgotten, everyone shared a bit of their food. We were a family. We had good times and bad times, but we kept learning. Far beyond maths, social studies, reading, grammar and writing, we learned how to get along with each other.

I loved teaching at this small school and knew I was teaching the children about life as much as about subjects. I'd like to believe some students will have an influence on the world that will last long after I am gone.

In Scotland, 600,000 tonnes of food are thrown away every year. This amount of food, which could as feed about 1.2 billion poor people, is almost a third of household (家庭) waste. And food waste isn't just a big problem in Scotland.

Money time, and resources (资源) are often wasted by throwing away good food. It also causes very harmful greenhouse gas, which is perilous to the planet.

In the production stage, some foods do not enter the food chain for many reasons. Supermarkets usually care about the quality of food from farms. They often refuse strange-looking and unusually sized produce. However, they seem to forget that it is almost impossible to grow the perfect produce. Food waste at the consumption (消费) stage includes food going out of date and leftovers (剩饭) because of too much food. In households, even mostly fresh fruit and vegetables are thrown away.

In order to reduce food waste, here is what we can do:

Understanding the terms “use by” and “best before” dates. “Use by” dates are there for your safety. It is dangerous to eat food after the use-by date and doing so risks your health. “Best before” dates tell you how long the food will be at its best quality. Once the food passes the date, it isn't necessarily bad, but you should still check, just to be sure.

Every time you go shopping and you bring back new food, put them at the back of your fridge and bring the food that will expire (到期) soon closer to the front. That way, you know what needs to be eaten first.

If you have any food that will expire soon, give it to charity if you aren't going to eat it. They will really appreciate the food you have given.

  1. (1) What does the underlined word “perilous” in Paragraph 2 mean?
    A . Valuable. B . Dangerous. C . Different. D . Unnecessary.
  2. (2) What should people do to reduce food waste according to the text?
A . Pick usually sized produce. B . Improve the quality of farm produce. C . Order produce directly from farmers. D . Avoid buying too much food at a time.
  3. (3) What advice does the author offer to people?
A . Buy food that will expire soon to reduce waste. B . Throw away food that passes the best-before date. C . Place food carefully according to its expiry date. D . Give food that has passed its use-by date to charity.

Vincent Van Gogh

Born in the Netherlands in 1853, van Gogh led a simple life in a small town until the age of 16. He then left school and joined a company of art business in the larger city. During the next seven years, van Gogh bought and sold paintings in the Netherlands, London, and Paris. He eventually realized that dealing with others' artwork was not his dream. He soon discovered that his dream was to become an artist himself.

He spent much of his time in learning the basic skills of drawing. He believed that to become a great painter, one must first master the ability to draw. It was only after he was comfortable in this area that he began to use oil paints. That is when van Gogh developed a style for color that made him one of the most respected artists of all time.

Van Gogh's paintings are amazing representations (代表) of his view of the world. He used his brush and oils to make layers that built the painting until it was almost three-dimensional (三维). This quality makes people want to reach out and touch the painting.

Perhaps one of the most memorable examples of van Gogh's use of color and brush style is his painting The Starry Night. The sky swirls across the canvas (画布), while the stars glow with unearthly brightness. Each brushstroke (笔画) creates the movement and lights. Under the sky rests a village painted with smaller strokes and finer detail, giving the impression of peace. A large tree in the foreground suggests that the view is enjoyed from the top of a hill, which offers a glimpse of the majesty (庄严) of the night sky. The Starry Night displays the gift of van Gogh's ability to create a powerful image with simple brush and oils.

Van Gogh spent only the last ten years of his life painting. Yet van Gogh today is considered one of the greatest artists of all time. His influence is strong; many painters mimic his style and use of color. His artwork can be found in museums all over the world.

  1. (1) Van Gogh learned how to paint by ________.
A . reading books about art B . observing the world around him C . studying the works of great artists D . equipping himself with basic skills
  2. (2) The author includes a photo of The Starry Night to ________.
A . praise van Gogh's ability B . present van Gogh's respect for nature C . show van Gogh's style of painting D . express van Gogh's feelings about his art
  3. (3) The author seems to admire the ________ most about van Gogh's paintings.
    A . image B . light C . theme D . brushwork
  4. (4) The underlined word "mimic" in the last paragraph means ________.

Over 40 years ago, a country music DJ convention (大会) was held every year in Nashville, Tennessee. Many country performers used to attend (参加) the convention to give their performances. Fans would go to Nashville hoping to see their favorite performers. In the end, so many fans began showing up in Nashville that a festival named Fan Fair was born.

The first Fan Fair was held in April 1972, in Nashville for four days. Some of country music's biggest stars attended. There were about fifty thousand fans. The first Fan Fair was so successful that planning began almost immediately for 1973. The date was changed to June, when the weather would be better. Over one hundred thousand fans attended the second Fan Fair.

Every year brought so many performers and fans to Fan Fair that, in 1982, it was moved to the Tennessee State Fairgrounds. Fan Fair stayed at the fairgrounds for another nineteen years.

There was always the unexpected during the festival. In 1974, former Beatle Paul McCartney attended. In 1992, more than six hundred reporters from Europe, Asia, and South America went to cover the appearance of a popular star, Billy Ray Cyrus, who had introduced a new country line dance. In 1996, Garth Brooks, who made a surprise appearance, signed autographs (签名) for 23 hours.

In 2001, Fan Fair returned to downtown Nashville as the world's biggest country music festival. Now, over one hundred and twenty-five thousand country music fans go to Nashville every June. As you can imagine, those who want to attend Fan Fair must plan ahead. For example, they need to buy a ticket several months ahead of time. Of course, there's much more to prepare.

A . has a history of more than 50 years B . lasts almost half a month every year C . is the most important music festival in America D . is a time when country music lovers get together
  2. (2) The second Fan Fair _____.

A . was held in the spring of 1972 B . was more popular than the first one C . was moved from Nashville to the fairgrounds D . was attended by former Beatle Paul McCartney

A . show why Fan Fair has been popular B . introduce three famous musicians C . explain how Fan Fair started D . ask people to attend Fan Fair
  4. (4) What will the author probably talk about next?

A . Advice for fans. B . Music in America. C . Education in Nashville. D . The future of country music.

In July 2021, astronauts on board the International Space Station (ISS) planted pepper seeds as part of an experiment to test which plants could be successfully grown in space. The peppers were harvested four months later, and the team celebrated with a party and taste test.

For astronauts living mostly off prepackaged foods for months at a time on the ISS, fresh and flavourful produce is welcomed. With long missions to the Moon and Mars in focus, NASA is working to find sustainable ways for astronauts to enjoy fresh foods, which will add key nutrients to their diets and improve their state of mind.

Astronauts have grown radishes, zinnias and a variety of lettuces on board the ISS before, but this is the first time they grew peppers, which posed a new challenge, reports Elizabeth Howell for Space. com.

Biologists at the Kennedy Space Centre spent two years picking the perfect pepper. They wanted to try peppers because they're a great source of vitamins and nutrients, and they can be eaten raw or cooked. Plus, peppers are fairly low maintenance(保养)to grow.

In June, a carrier delivered supplies to the ISS along with a package of 48 pepper seeds. Astronauts on board planted the seeds in a microwave oven-sized growing container. The conditions in it—such as lighting, watering and air circulation—were controlled by a crew based at the Kennedy Space Centre. On board, the astronauts collected data and offered feedback on the flavour of the peppers.

"This is important because the food astronauts eat needs to be as good as the rest of their equipment, "LaShelle Spencer, a plant scientist at NASA, said over the summer. "To successfully send people to Mars and bring them back to Earth, we will not only require the most nutritious foods, but the best tasting ones as well. "

  1. (1) Why did astronauts attempt to plant pepper in space?
A . Only pepper can grow in space. B . There were no enough food for astronauts. C . Humans wanted to test which plants can grow in space. D . Pepper can grow better than other plants.
  2. (2) What special benefits does pepper have compared with other plants?
A . Its nutrients are the highest. B . It needn't too much later care. C . It improves their state of mind most. D . The vitamins in it are the most.
  3. (3) What does the underlined word "it" refer to in paragraph 5?
    A . Container. B . Package. C . Microwave. D . Seed.
  4. (4) What can we infer from the text?
A . Astronaut need special nutrition to keep the best state of mind. B . The idea that pepper is grown in space is silly. C . It is the carrier that is in charge of sending feedback on the peppers. D . Pepper can't be eaten cooked in space but it can be eaten raw.
