Sally had trouble speaking in social situations. I'm a registered nurse and I love kids and dogs. I wanted to use Bella to bring her joy, comfort and confidence the way only a dog can.

That morning in January, her teacher led us to a room by the school office. "Sally hasn't spoken outside her home in two years," she told me. "Her parents have taken her to doctors, but nothing has worked." A little girl stood shyly just inside the doorway. Her eyes brightened when noticing my dog.

"This is Isabella Rose. I call her Bella," I said. "Would you like to pet her? She doesn't know anyone here and she'd like to meet you. She does tricks. Would you like to see?"

Sally nodded. I motioned with my hand. Bella lay down and then rolled over. Sally's eyes cheered up. "She'll do it for you too," I said. "I can teach you."

I showed Sally the hand signals for various commands. She was a natural with Bella. Soon Sally was able to take Bella at her pace all on her own. I could see her standing taller, more sure of herself each time we met.

One morning, when she was working with Bella, I heard a tiny voice, barely a whisper: "Good dog." Sally didn't take her eyes off Bella, but I wanted to jump for joy. Sally spoke a little more each week, only to Bella at first, but then to me. Later, she started giving voice commands with her hand signals and her confidence rose. Still, she hadn't spoken in her classroom.

"Could you bring Bella to my class and show the other kids her tricks?" Sally asked me one day. An idea struck me. "Why don't you do it?" I said. "I know you can. You're as good with Bella as I am." Now, Sally stood nervously in front of her kindergarten class, with Bella sitting calmly by her side. Her classmates focused on Sally, waiting for her to speak.

A Mother's Love

My mom only had one eye. I hated her. She was such an embarrassment. She cooked for students and teachers to support the family.

There was one day during elementary school (小学) when my mom came over to say hello to me. I was so embarrassed.

How could she do this to me? I ignored her, threw her a hateful look and ran out. The next day at school one of my classmates said, "Your mom only has one eye!"

I wanted to bury myself. I also wanted my mom to just disappear. I confronted (面对) her that day and said, "If you're only going to make me a laughing stock, why don't you just die?"

My mom did not respond. I didn't even stop to think for a second about what I had said, because I was full of anger. I took no notice of her feelings at all.

I wanted to be out of that house, and have nothing to do with her. So I studied really hard, and got a chance to go abroad for further education.

Then, I got married. I bought a house of my own. I had kids of my own. I was happy with my life, my kids and the comforts. Then one day, my mother came to visit me. She hadn't seen me in years and she didn't even meet her grandchildren.

When she stood by the door, my children laughed at her, and I shouted at her for coming over uninvited. I screamed at her, "How dare you come to my house and scare my children! GET OUT OF HERE! NOW!!!"

And to this, my mother quietly answered, "Oh, I'm so sorry. I may have gotten the wrong address." and she was soon out of sight.

One day, a letter regarding a school reunion (同学聚会) came to my house. So I lied to my wife that I was going on a business trip. After the reunion, I went to the old house just out of curiosity.

My neighbors said that she died. I did not shed a single tear. They handed me a letter that she had wanted me to have.

One weekend in July, Jane and her husband, Tom, had driven three hours to camp overnight by a lake in the forest. Unfortunately, on the way an unpleasant subject came up and they started to quarrel. By the time they reached the lake, Jane was so angry that she said to Tom, "I'm going to find a better spot for us to camp" and walked away.

With no path to follow, Jane just walked on for quite a long time. After she had climbed to a high place, she turned around, hoping to see the lake. To her surprise, she saw nothing but forest and, far beyond, a snowcapped mountain top. She suddenly realized that she was lost.

"Tom!" she cried. "Help!"

No reply. If only she had not left her mobile phone in that bag with Tom!Jane kept moving, but the farther she walked, the more confused she became. As night was beginning to fall, Jane was so tired that she had to stop for the night. Lying awake in the dark, Jane wanted very much to be with Tom and her family. She wanted to hold him and tell him how much she loved him.

Jane rose at the break of day, hungry and thirsty. She could hear water trickling(滴落) somewhere at a distance. Quickly she followed the sound to a stream. To her great joy, she also saw some berry bushes. She drank, and ate a few berries. Never in her life had she tasted anything better. Feeling stronger now, Jane began to walk along the stream and hope it would lead her to the lake.

As she picked her way carefully along the stream, Jane heard a helicopter. Is that for me? Unfortunately, the trees made it impossible for people to see her from above. A few minutes later, another helicopter flew overhead. Jane took off her yellow blouse, thinking that she should go to an open area and flag them if they came back again.

During this past year, I've had three instances of car trouble. Each time these things happened, I was sick of the way most people hadn't bothered to help. One of those times, I was on the side of the road for close to three hours with my big Jeep. I put signs in the windows, big signs that said NEED A JACK (千斤顶), and offered money. Nothing. Right as I was about to give up, a Mexican family in a small truck pulled over, and the father bounded out.

He sized up the situation and called for his daughter, who spoke English. He conveyed through her that he had a jack but that it was too small for the Jeep, so we would need something to support it. Then he got a saw (锯子) from the truck and cut a section out of a big log on the side of the road. We rolled it over and put his jack on top, and we were in business.

I started taking the wheel off, and then, if you can believe it, I broke his tire iron. No worries: He handed it to his wife, and she was gone in a flash down the road to buy a new tire iron. She was back in 15 minutes. We finished the job, and I was a very happy man.

The two of us were dirty and sweaty. His wife prepared a pot of water for us to wash our hands. I tried to put a $20 bill in the man's hand, but he wouldn't take it, so instead I went up to the truck and gave it to his wife as quietly as I could. I asked the little girl where they lived. Mexico, she said. They were in Oregon so Mommy and Daddy could work on a fruit farm for the next few weeks. Then they would go home.

He woke suddenly and completely. It was 4 a. m. at Christmas, the hour when his father had always called him to get up and help with milking the cow. Strange how the habit of his youth was with him still, even his father had been dead for 40 years. The magic of Christmas for him was a long childhood past, and he was wondering why he felt so awake when his mind went back to his teenage years.

He was 15 years old then and still on his father's farm. A few days before Christmas, he heard what his father was saying to his mother.

"Mary, I hate to call Rob in the mornings. He's growing so fast, and he needs his sleep. I could manage alone."

"Well, you can't, Adam." His mother replied. "Besides, he isn't a child anymore. It's time to take his turn."

When he heard these words, something in him woke: his father loved him so much as had never been thought before. Now that he knew so, there would be no more lying in the mornings waiting to be called. He got up and pulled on his clothes.

On the night before Christmas, he lay thinking about the next day. They were poor, and most of the excitement was in the turkey raised themselves and the mince pies made by his mother. His sisters made presents, and he always saved and bought something for parents.

However, he wished, that Christmas he was fifteen, and that he had a better present for his father than before. He looked out of the window and saw Dad working in a stable. Then a thought struck him: why should he not give his father a special gift out there in the stable? He could get up earlier, quietly go into it and get all the milking done. Then when his father went in to start the milking, he'd see it all done.

My wife, Megan, and I went out to dinner with an old friend who we had not seen for a while. There had been some talk of COVID-19 on the news, but it was early in the outbreak and people were still going about their daily routines. Even though everyone in group felt perfectly, we took precautions(预防): we washed our hands with soap and used hand sanitizer(洗手液), did not share food, and had no significantly close contact.

A few days later, our friend called and told us that she had tested positive for the coronavirus. She had felt some mild symptoms for a day or so after that dinner and was able to be tested because she is a doctor. On the following day, I started to feel a little tired and my head was a bit cloudy. I decided to stay in the master bedroom away from the rest of my family. The next morning, I woke up with a 39-degree fever. That was when we realized that I might have caught the virus from our friend.

At once, Megan called our state's coronavirus hotline, who then called in our primary care doctor and the head of our local hospital system's coronavirus team. We explained that we had been in contact with someone who had been tested positive, and I was having symptoms. They quickly approved me to receive a test at an urgent care center located 5 kilometer's drive from my house. The result made my heart sink-I was also tested positive, and the local hospital didn't have the facilities for my disease. As a mild case, I was recommended to stay home and quarantine(隔离)myself.

Following the doctor's advice, Megan and I quarantined ourselves and our kids. With my symptoms developing, I started isolation in the bedroom, and the only interaction I had with Megan was when she brought in food. She slept on a small couch in our home office away from the kids' rooms. She also minimized her contact with our kids in case she was carrying the virus.

It was last February. Noel, a 28-year-old marketing manager was heading from Iceland's Kefavik Interactional Airport to the capital city Reykjavik with the modern traveler's two essentials: a dream and a GPSunit. What could go wrong?

The dream had been with him since April 14, 2010 when he watched TV news report of the volcano eruption in Iceland. Dark-haired, with a youthful face and thick eyebrows, he had never travelled beyond the United States and his native Mexico. "I want to see this through my own eyes, " he thought as he watched the news on his couch.

Four months later, on a cold winter morning, he was driving from Keflavik Airport in a rented car towards a hotel in Reykjavik, excited that his one-week journey was beginning. As the pink sun rose over the ocean and shone light on the snow-covered lava rocks along the shore, he dutifully followed the commands of the GPS that came with the car, a calm female voice directing him to an address-a left here, a right there.

But after stopping on a deserted road, he got a feeling that the voice might be steering(引导)him wrong. He had been driving for nearly an hour, yet the GPS put his arrival time at around eight hours later. He entered his destination again and got the same result. Though he sensed that something was off, he made a choice to trust the machine.

The farther he drove, the fewer cars he saw. The roads became icier. He was sleepy, cold and hungry. He hadn't set up his phone for international use, so that was no help. Another three hours passed. As his tires skidded(打滑)along a narrow mountain road that skirted a steep cliff, he knew that the device had failed him.

He was lost. He didn't know where else to go. There was no one else on the road, and there was nothing else to do but follow the line on the screen to its mysterious end.

The event that stands out in Tom's memory happened one morning when Tom was only ten years old. He was at home with his elder sister Jane. Tom was doing his homework when he heard raised voices. At first he thought nothing of it since customers in the motorcycle shop directly below their flat often became loud, but he soon realized this time it was different.

"Quick! Quick! Remove the motorcycles from the shop." someone yelled.

Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When Tom opened the front door of their flat to investigate, a thick cloud of smoke greeted him. The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running and crying.

Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. They rushed out of the door and along the corridor(走廊)through the smoke.

They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Jane stopped in her track. She turned around and headed back the way they came. Tom had no idea what she was doing, but he followed suit.

Jane had suddenly remembered the lady in her 70s who lived next door to them, who they called Makcik, Malay for auntie. Jane began banging on Makcik's door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around them, Tom could see many of their neighbors—some still in their pyjamas—running for safety. The thought of fear crossed his mind.

"She would have run for safety like everyone else!" Tom cried. However, Jane refused to give up. "I know Makcik's still inside." She said she was familiar with Makcik's daily routine and was certain she would still be sleeping. She pounded the door. "Go downstairs. Go now! Go!"

It all started at lunch. Someone asked Maria, a girl in my class, if she wanted a piece of pie. But because she's allergic (过敏) to wheat, she can't eat pie. Everyone was sympathetic. Then I said I was allergic to bananas. At first, everyone stared at me like I was from another planet. So, for the next ten minutes, I had to listen to all sorts of silly jokes about what bad luck I have because I can't eat bananas.

Later, when my friend Joe and I were walking home, he began to laugh about the incident at lunch. I complained that if I was going to be allergic to something, at least it should be something I hated.

"Like what?" he asked. "Well, like..." I began, making a face, "maybe broccoli (西兰花)." Joe laughed. Then he started clowning around, pretending that he was me eating broccoli. "Oh, oh," he groaned, scratching (挠痒) himself. "I itch (发痒) everywhere!"

When I got home, I smelled something delicious. "What smells so good, Mom?" I called out. My mother replied, "It's dinner. I found a new recipe I think you'll like." After setting the table, I called my younger brother and sister. We all sat down, and Mom spooned out the vegetable. When I saw what it was, shock set in, and I was speechless.

Mom said, "Luis, eat! It's broccoli with beans." I couldn't move. She said again, "Luis, eat. You know the rule."

Mom had the rule that we had to eat everything on our plate, or we couldn't have dessert, usually my favorite ice cream. I picked up my fork, took a tiny bit, and put it to my mouth. I put the fork down again. I thought of Joe's crazy act and started scratching myself—slowly at first and then faster and faster. My brother and sister looked at me suspiciously.

"Luis, what's going on?" Mom asked. I said, "Mom, I think I'm allergic to broccoli." "Really?" she asked. I nodded, and she studied me for a moment. Then she said, "I just read an article in a health magazine. It tells parents what to do when their kids show sudden allergies to broccoli. Let me get the cure."

One very hot morning, Mrs. Carr was occupied in doing housework in the kitchen, with her two kids Tom Carr and his sister Dot playing in the yard. Tom was nine years old, but Dot was only three, and Tom took very great care of his little sister.

Suddenly a man rushed hurriedly into the yard. It was Mr. May, who lived at the next station, which is a big farm in Australia. "Fire!" he cried, "Fire! One of the worst fires I ever saw in my life. Come along, Carr, and bring all your hands," Mr. Carr called his men out, and away they all rode. "Stay behind, sweeties!" warned Mrs. Carr from the window of the kitchen, continuing with her work.

"Look there, Dot," said Tom," the brown calf (小牛) has got out of the yard!" In the hurry of the men riding off to fight the fire, the gate had not been closed again and the brown calf was running away. Tom ran at once to bring the calf back and Dot ran after him, About half a mile from the farm yard the open land came to an end, and the bush began. The calf ran among the trees, and the children followed.

The trees were not thick at first, and it was very easy to follow the brown calf through the bushes. But soon the calf ran into a deep valley, where Tom couldn't follow it. "Oh, what a pity.

Dot," he said. "The calf is lost now; it will get away into the bush. But give me your hand. We must go home!"

Tom began to feel very afraid. If the fire came through the bush and caught them, he and his little sister could be burned to death, He tried to get on faster, but he could not find the way out of the bush. Tom took his little sister on his back, and carried her for a long way, tired and thirsty.

At dawn, Taylor opened her sleepy eyes and looked out of the window at the foggy field below.

"NO!" she cried, now fully awake. Buttermilk the cow was in Mama's daisy patch (雏菊地).

I must have forgotten to lock the gate last night, Taylor thought as she pulled a sweater over her head. Mama was planning to sell daisy bouquets (花束)at the fair next week, but Buttermilk was eating the flowers.

Taylor hurried outside and grabbed the lead rope on the wall. "Why can't you stay in the field?" she called to Buttermilk as she headed across the yard to the daisy patch.

Buttermilk still stood there chewing flowers. Annoyed, Taylor thought to herself, "When I grew up, I'll be an artist and paint pictures all day. I'll never own a cow. Too much trouble."

Just as Taylor was about to throw the lead rope onto Buttermilk's collar, the family dog, Red, rounded the corner of the house. Startled, Buttermilk took off, tearing through the daisies and across the yard. She finally ran through the open gate and into the field.

"Thank goodness!" Taylor said as she closed the gate and secured the lock.

She turned to look at the flower garden, where most of the daisies were either eaten or trampled (踩踏).

Mama came out of the house. "What's going on?" she asked. She looked sadly at her garden.

"I forgot to lock the gate," Taylor said. "I'm so sorry."

"I know you are" Mama sighed and gave Taylor a hug. "You learned an important lesson today."

Taylor's heart was heavy as she went back into the house. She had to think of a way to make it up to her mother.

A MOTHER'S DAY SURPRISE

The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother's Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.

The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a. m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely. Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff's hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

A minute later the father went to his room and came back with an old tattered (破旧的) diary, which he had kept since his son was born. On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page. When the read it, the following words were written in the diary:

It was a freezing cold night, all quiet in the street. Tom was walking home after a tiring day from work, depressed and exhausted. Having worked overtime for nearly a month, his program was still rejected by his manager. Unfortunately his mom was diagnosed with lung cancer the other day. He felt his life couldn't be worse. As he walked, he thought seriously about giving up his present job and returning to his hometown. He thought in regret if he had not left his hometown to seek his fortune in the big city, his life wouldn't have been in such a hopeless situation.

City life had become too much for him. As he walked down empty streets under tall buildings, he felt very cold and frightened. He began running, both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers. Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets. About a block from his apartment, he heard a sound behind him. He felt frightened and turned back quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty, with no one in sight. All he saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise had made him nervous, so he started to run faster towards his apartment.

When he finally arrived at his apartment, he was out of breath but relieved. Not until he reached his apartment building and unlocked the door did he realize what the noise had been. It had been his wallet falling to the sidewalk. Suddenly he was not cold or tired anymore. Without hesitation, he ran out of the door and back to the sidewalk where he had heard the noise. He having searched the sidewalk anxiously for about fifteen minutes, his wallet was still nowhere to be found.

I failed again. It was the day of the big marathon. I had decided three years ago to train for the half-marathon event and take home a medal. There I sat, in front of my TV, while I watched others cross the finish line. It was just another in a long string of failures. I had never met a single weight loss or fitness goal and I was majoring in the art of failing.

We are a family with the spirit of exploration. We often plan active vacations. It seemed that on every vacation I was the one who couldn't go the distance. Each time I urged my family, " Go on without me. Bring me lots of pictures and videos. I'll be fine just sitting here taking in the view. " I lied. Sick of being left behind, I decided that it would never happen again. As a teenager, surely, there was still hope for me. I always spent weeks walking to prepare for our active vacations. I had lost weight many times. I just always seemed to fail to get where I needed to be.

But this time I would do something different. I was going to walk a half marathon. Surely I would lose weight and get in shape if I could complete over 12 miles in four hours. Besides, this would be training. Training sounded cooler than diet and exercise. I was excited and ready to go. I bought the proper equipment and clothing, checked out what type of drinks would be handed out at the marathon and prepared a lot. I had a plan!

Sam Watts was a 37-year-old fisherman living and working in Canada. One day, Sam planned to head out into the Pacific at 9 am and work straight through until 5 pm the next day. Joining Sam would be  his crewman (船员), 24-year-old Tom Buck.

Although Sam had been warned that a storm was coming, there was little that would keep him from going. As he sailed through the waves about 120 kilometers from land, Sam let out his 3-kilometer-long fishing line. The storm was gaining strength on land but had yet to reach the men far offshore (离岸的). That changed around I am. Waves rocked the small boat, which began to turn sideways like an amusement park ride. "Get us out of this place!" Tom screamed to Sam. "Let's go back!"

With the winds and waves kicking up, the boat began to fill with water. Sam and Tom tried to pull in the fishing line together, but the high waves filled the boat with water, forcing Sam to make a hard decision. He cut the line, losing thousands of dollars worth of equipment and fish in the sea. He then pointed the boat toward a port five hours away. Sam then called his boss, William Fox, to report his position.

With dawn coming, Sam spotted(发现) the rise of the mountains on the horizon (地平线). He was figuring out a route through the dangerous waters when suddenly the motor stopped. "I couldn't believe it," Sam said. "We were 24 kilometers off the coast, and the motor died. " High waves raised and dropped the boat, sending the men crashing into the sides. "William, William!" Sam yelled into the radio. "If you're coming to get me, come now!"

"We're coming!" William shouted back.

An A for Mrs. Bartlett

I was sitting next to Missy in my ninth-grade world history class when Mrs. Bartlett announced a new project. In groups, we were to create a poster around what we were studying.

On a piece of paper, we wrote the names of three friends we wanted in our group. After collecting all the requests, Mrs. Bartlett informed us that she would take into consideration the names we chose and would let us know the results the next day. I was a well-rounded top student in the class, so I had no doubt I would get the group of my choice. There were only a handful of sociably decent people in the class, and Missy was one of them. I knew we had chosen each other.

The next day, I anxiously awaited the class. After the bell rang, Missy and I stopped talking as Mrs. Bartlett called for our attention. She started to call out names. When she reached group three, Missy's name was called. So I'm in group three, I thought. The second, third and fourth members of the group were called. My name was not included. There had to be some mistake!

Then I heard it. The last group: "Mauro, Juliette, Rachel, Karina." I could feel the tears well in my eyes. How could I face being in that group--the boy who barely spoke English, the one girl who was always covered by skirts that went down to her ankles, and the other girl who was often wearing very strange and unusual clothes with fancy items. They certainly fell into the category of the least popular in our class. They were considered misfits (不合群的人)!

There must be something wrong! Mrs. Bartlett was such a person of insight, vision and thoughtfulness that she never forgot to bring out the potential of all her students. Oh, how badly I wanted to be with my friends. Finally I was determined to convince her I should be in the "good" group.

Edun did not want to go on a hike. She especially did not want to go on a long hike in the mountains that led to a tiny cabin(小木屋) with no electricity and no running water. She wanted to stay home reading a book instead while wrapped in a warm blanket.

"Ready?" Mom asked cheerfully after breakfast. Edun looked out the window and only saw rain, lots of it. "We should go another day," Edun suggested. "Maybe a hundred years from now." She worried she would get tired on the hike. She worried about getting bored at the dark cabin. Mom said it was time to stop worrying and get into the car.

Edun's brother, Will, was waiting in the garage, who wore a camera around his neck. Will was four years older than Edun and had climbed many more mountains. He'd started hiking when he was two and loved it.

Because it was raining, Edun had to wear her rain pants, her rain hat, her rain jacket, and her waterproof boots. Her jacket had a rough material on the inside. She didn't like how it felt against her skin.

After about half an hour's drive, they parked at a trailhead(登山口). The rain had stopped but the ground was still dripping wet. "We'll be there by afternoon!" Mom promised. The afternoon sounded far away.

Will identified a bird sitting on a nearby branch—"Fox sparrow!"—then he raced down the trail and was soon out of sight.

Edun rested under a pine tree. "You can't force me to walk," Edun said. "You're right," said her mom smilingly, standing under the tree, too, "But you will never know what may lie ahead and amaze us."

Often, when he came to visit, my grandfather would bring me a present. These were never the sorts of things that other people brought, such as dolls, books or toys. My dolls and toys have been gone for more than half a century, but many of my grandfather's gifts are still with me. Once he brought me a little plastic cup. I looked inside, expecting to see something special. But there was only some loose soil in it, which made me disappointed. He smiled at me affectionately. Turning around, he picked up a little teapot from my dolls' tea set and took me to the kitchen where he filled the little cup with water. Back in the living room, he put it on the windowsill(窗台) and handed me the teapot. "If you promise to put some water in the cup every day, something may happen." he told me.

At that time, I was only five years old. This whole thing made no sense to me at all. I looked at him doubtfully and asked, "Do I have to water it every day? What will happen?" He nodded to me with encouragement, "Yes, every day, dear."

And so I promised. At first, curious to see what would happen, I did not mind doing this. But as the days went by and nothing changed, it got harder and harder to remember to put water in the cup. After a week, I asked my grandfather if it was time to stop yet. Shaking his head no, he said, "Every day." The second week was even harder, and I became regretful of my promise to put water in the cup. When my grandfather came again, I tried to give it back to him, but he refused to take it, saying simply the same words, "Every day." By the third week, I began to forget to put water in the cup during the day. Often, I would remember only after I had been put to bed and would have to get out of bed and water it in the dark. But I did not miss a single day.

It was a day just like every other day. I woke up early in the morning and went to run on Mount Gracious with my dog, Bubbles. As I ran up the mountain, with my dog following close behind, I felt energetic and refreshed. Running in a natural environment never failed to make me feel alive. When I reached the top, I drank some water and enjoyed the beautiful sunrise. This scene always took my breath away, no matter how many times I had seen it.

Having rested enough, Bubbles and I made our way back down the mountain. As we were running downhill, I saw an unfamiliar path and decided to explore the area. The path was full of rocks. It was not easy to walk.

Suddenly, I slipped on a muddy patch, rolling down five meters before I managed to grab hold of an exposed root of a huge tree. I was safe for now. However, I was seriously injured (受伤的). My knees were badly hurt. My right foot was also dislocated (脱臼). I knew for sure I would be unable to make my way up or down the mountain without help. I called out to Bubbles and he barked loudly from above. It seemed like he understood that I needed help. He looked down at me pitifully before disappearing from sight.

As night fell, panic (恐慌) set in and scary thoughts went through my mind. There were many things that I had got to do. I couldn't die! This would not have happened if I had stuck to my usual path.

I was losing hope when I heard barking (狗吠声). It was Bubbles. I rubbed my eyes as I struggled to keep awake. But there was silence. Who could it be? Was I hallucinating (产生幻觉)? Then I heard some voices and more barking. Yes. Help was near, I knew. I could count on (依赖) my dog to get help.

Paragraph 1: Soon, I heard my parents calling my name.

Paragraph 2: Later, my parents told me what Bubbles had done to get help.
