Mother and I spent mornings cleaning up the dirt that blew into our house. Mother said all the dust was due to the drought, not only here in our village but all over the Great Plains.

The dirt covered everything. When my sister, Amy, and I walked to school, we wore kerchiefs (方头巾) over our mouths so that we didn't breathe in the dirt. When the air quality was so bad that the school was closed, we stayed at home and helped Mother put wet sheets over the windows, but the dirt always found a way in.

Last Sunday, there was no dirt in the air, only bright sunshine and a clear blue sky. After breakfast, Father headed out to the farm to check on the cattle while Mother started doing some washing. Amy and I played in the yard. Surprisingly, the temperature suddenly dropped.

Then Mother shouted from the house, "Christine, you and Amy get inside, quick, now!"

I looked towards the west and saw a huge black cloud. All the birds flew away. "Amy, go with Mother!" I shouted, "I'll warn Father."

Amy ran towards the house. The storm hit so fast, and I barely saw her climb the steps. In an instant the day turned into night. I stumbled (绊倒) over our bicycles left carelessly in the yard. I screamed, hoping my voice would lead Father back.

The dirt and sand stung (刺痛) my skin like a thousand bees. I needed to get to a shelter. Covering my face with one hand, I moved towards our car which was parked in the yard and opened the door. Dirt flew in with me as I closed the door. Father was still out there! I needed to help him find the car.

I searched the dashboard (仪表板) and found the switch for the front lights. Would Father see them in the darkness? Was he safe? I pushed the horn (喇叭) again and again, hoping Father would hear it. I pushed until I had no more strength in my arms.

As a sixth grader, I began noticing how other kids were separating into different groups in the class. There were the geeks, the jocks (小丑), and the popular cool kids. I wasn't sure where I belonged. And I think that was a problem.

Our teacher had assigned "secret friends" for the coming week. The purpose of this assignment was to do nice things for your friend without letting them know who was doing it. We could leave encouraging notes on their desk or mysteriously leave a card in their backpack or book. Our teacher wrote each kid's name on a piece of paper and threw them into a bucket, then we each closed our eyes and drew the name of the classmate who we were to secretly befriend and support over the next five school days.

Everyone was excited to get involved, including Rochelle. By the middle of the week, we had turned this assignment into a contest to see whose secret friend could leave the best gift. Instead of encouraging notes, we left stationary sets on our friend's desk. Instead of giving compliments, we were giving bubble gum, lollipops and even money. It seemed that everyone was getting cool presents from their friends. Everyone except me, that is.

My secret friend followed our teacher's directions without a fault. I received handmade cards, notes with nice thoughts and countless smiley face pictures saying that I was one of the nicest girls in the class. This friend seemed to think highly of me from the notes that were left, but the lack of gifts kept me wondering what was up with whoever had pulled my name.

On the last morning of our assignment, I walked into my classroom and noticed a package on my desk. At last, my secret friend had grasped the idea that a gift was what I really needed. I quickly ripped open the gift paper, only to find a small doll inside. The pink wool-knit doll seemed not new but delicate. But the girls sitting near me giggled and gossiped about the "little girl" gift I had received.

When she was 22 years old, Pat Jones decided to travel around the world and see as many foreign places as she could when she was young. When she finished college at home in Britain, Pat chose to visit Latin America first. She managed to get a job as an English teacher in a secondary school in Bolivia. Pat spoke a little Spanish, so she was able to communicate with her students even though they did not know much English.

A sentence she had once read somewhere stuck in her mind: if you dream in a foreign language, it means that you have really mastered it. Pat repeated this sentence to her students and she hoped that someday she would dream in Spanish and they would dream in English.

One day, Tim, one of the worst students in her class, came up to her and explained in Spanish that he had not done his homework. He said that he had gone to bed early, but slept badly. Pat was quite angry with him, for she did not think that his explanation had anything to do with his homework. But Tim told her that he dreamed all night and his dream was in English.

“In English!” Pat thought. She was greatly surprised, since Tim was such a bad student. She was also jealous (嫉妒的). Her dreams were still not in Spanish, but she decided to encourage her students and asked him to tell her about his dream.

“All the people in my dream spoke English,” Tim said. “And all the signs were in English. All the newspapers, magazines and TV programs were in English, too.”

“But that's wonderful,” said Pat. “What did all the people say to you?” she asked.

“I'm sorry, Miss Jones. That's why I slept so badly all night. I didn't understand a word they said. It is a nightmare (噩梦)!” Tim answered.

Rebecca stretched her tired back. "That's the last seedling(树苗), Pa. Have we planted enough?" Pa walked to the end of the row of cottonwood seedlings. "No, " he said. "We have to plant trees all the way to that rock over there. We'll need about twenty more seedlings. "

"I'll get the seedlings, " offered Rebecca. She longed to cool her feet in the shallow river running through the cotton field. "You'd better let me go, " teased her twin brother, William. "There are dangers all over this prairie(牧场). You may both go, " said Pa.

They went across the shallow river to a sandbar where small cottonwood seedlings grew. Gently, they pulled the seedlings from the sand. "There! That's twenty, with a few to spare. " said Rebecca. "OK, " said William. He led the way to the riverbank, then stopped.

"Look! There's the dugout(防空壕)we lived in when we moved here last year. " He pointed to a hole in the grassy river bank. "Come on, let's go inside. " "No, " Rebecca said. "Then you start back, " said William, handing the seedlings to Rebecca. "I'll catch up. " He ran to the dugout and stepped inside.

Rebecca tied the seedlings into her long apron(围裙) and began to walk. Suddenly she froze in her tracks. A huge prairie rattlesnake(响尾蛇) moved along the river bank. It stopped right in front of the dugout and lay still, coiled up on the warm sunny bank. "William!" Rebecca shouted. "Don't come out!"

"Huh?" William's face appeared at a tiny window beside the door of the dugout. Rebecca pointed toward the rattler. William's face paled when he saw the snake blocking the doorway. He turned desperate eyes toward Rebecca, then he glanced behind himself.

Rebecca's mind raced, trying to think of a way to get William out of there. An idea popped into her head. It was their only hope. It was risky, but it was the only hope. "Don't move, " she said to William in a soft voice. "When I say NOW, you run out of there as fast as you can. " Rebecca removed the skirtlike petticoat(衬裙) from beneath her dress, then dipped it into the river. She squeezed out some of the water, then climbed to the top of the bank, directly above the dugout's opening.

Lee took a deep breath and let it out slowly. When his lungs felt comfortable, he dived beneath the water. Looking up, he could see the bright sun shinning on the water's surface. "Soon," Lee thought, "I shall be able to hold my breath as long as David. Then I, too, shall be able to dive for pearls. "

With lungs burning, he quickly surfaced and gasped(喘气) for breath. Lee was small for his twelve years, and he hated being treated as a child. David, his old brother, had been looked upon as a man long before he was Lee's age.

Now, every day as the sun warmed the bay, David and the other young men went out to dive for oysters (牡蛎). With luck, there would be pearls in many of them. Many times Lee begged to go along, but David always refused.

So every day Lee would go to the shallow water to practice. With each day's effort, his diving improved and he felt much at home in the water. "Tomorrow I shall challenge David. " Lee decided. The next morning, Lee rose early, hurrying to catch up with David, who was already on the beach. "David, wait! " called Lee.

The group of men around David grew quiet. Lee continued, "David, I say that I can hold my breath under the water as long as you can. If I win, I ask only that you treat me as a man and let me dive by your side. "

The men of the village gasped(倒抽气) and began to laugh. David looked amused, "And what if when you lose?"

"I will not lose!" He took a breath, "But if I should, I promise not to ask to go with you for a full year!

The men of the village are here to judge. "

Hearing this, David looked surprised.

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily.

She couldn't help crying sadly when she thought of the scolding (指责) from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not possible for her, since she had nothing with her. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she had to leave。

The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, "Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?

"oh, yes…,but I don't have money on me..." she replied.

"That's nothing. I'll treat you today," said the man, "come in." The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.

"What is it?" asked the man kindly.

"Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!" said Jenny as she dried her tears," Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother, drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so cruel compared to a stranger!"

Hearing the words, the seller smiled, "Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your thanks to her?"

Jenny sat there, speechless; she remembered mother's familiar face and weathered hands. "Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel thankful, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me."

On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology (道歉) to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

A Midnight Rescue

It was not uncommon to carry out tasks at night as rescuers. Harry and David were informed of their task when it was nearly midnight. It was urgent so there was no time to hesitate. They headed into the forest.

The forest was black and silent. A little way into it they reached a fork in the earth path. Harry and David took the left path. They walked in silence, their eyes on the ground, watching out for the traps like big pits (坑) set by the illegal hunters. Every now and then a ray of moonlight through the branches above lit a spot of scarlet (猩红的) blood on the fallen leaves.

David saw that Harry looked very worried, asking," Could Unicom be hurt that badly?" Harry answered, "If we can't find it as soon as possible, it doesn't stand much chance to survive." Of course, Unicorn was not the animal in fairy tales but the nickname of a 3-year-old elephant, the last wild elephant in this forest. The nickname was given by the biodiversity rescuers who were protecting every member in this forest. They knew Unicorn was obedient and not afraid of human beings and that sometimes put it in danger. "Without it, the forest was not complete. Those illegal hunters should be thrown into prison. " Harry thought, carrying his first aid kit (急救箱) on his back and walking forward with his flashlight.

It seemed that thick fog would come at any time, which would increase the danger. Harry hurried into the heart of the forest with David. They walked for nearly half an hour, deeper and deeper. There were blood splashes (血迹) on the roots of a tree, as though the poor creature had been struggling around in pain close by. "We must hurry up ", said Harry.

My wife called, "Will you come here and make your darling daughter eat her food?"

I threw the newspaper away and rushed to the scene. My only daughter looked frightened. Tears were welling up in her eyes. In front of her was a bowl filled with curd rice which she particularly hated. But my mother and my wife believed firmly that curd rice is beneficial to health. I cleared my throat, and picked up the bowl. "Dina, why don't you take a few mouthfuls? Just for Dad's sake, dear." Dina softened a bit, and wiped her tears with the back of her hands. "OK, Dad. I will eat not just a few mouthfuls, but the whole lot. But, you should..."She hesitated." Dad, if I eat this entire curd rice, will you give me whatever I ask for?" "Oh sure, darling," I replied." Promise.

My girl stared at her mom and continued, "Ask Mom also to give a promise." My wife put her hand on Dina's and said, "Promise."

"Dear, you still want a new computer? Dad doesn't have that kind of money right now.

OK?" I became a bit anxious.

"No, Dad. I don't want anything expensive." Slowly and painfully, she finished eating the rice. Dina came to me with her eyes wide with expectation. All our attention was on her.

She demanded, "Dad, 1 want to have my head shaved off this Sunday!" My wife shouted, "A girl having her head shaved off? Impossible!"

"Dina, can you ask for something else? Seeing you with a clean- shaven head, we'll be sad," I said. But Dina said, "No, Dad. I don't want anything else. You promised to reward me with whatever I ask for. Now, you are going back on your words. Was it not you who told me the story of King Harish Chandra and its moral that we should honor our promises no matter what?" Dina was in tears.

It was time for me to call the shots for our promise must be kept.

Zipping Out Of Fear

"Breakfast time!" I quickly put on my clothes and rushed down the stairs.

"Come on, we don't want to be late!" My mom said. The aroma of pancakes filled the kitchen, making the room warm. I looked out of the window. The sun was out, making a warm and bright morning.

"Today's the day, zip lining" My dad said, sounding very enthusiastic early this morning.

Today we would go zip lining. The excitement built up inside of me as breakfast went on. After breakfast, we set out in my dad's car. Half way through the ride, the sun grew hot, and the leather on the seats burned my legs. I thought about the trip, how my parents went but not me. It was my first time experiencing something like this. I also thought about my fear of heights, one thing I tried to get rid of multiple times. It got in the way of so many fun activities, like roller coasters at Kings Island.

We were basically there by now, the sun still blazing hot. We pulled up to a big sign where our instructor waited for us.

"Hi y'all!" said our instructor cheerfully.

"So, have y'all done this before?"

My parents nodded but I shook my head. Our instructor went over safety instructions while we each put on a safety harness. I started to get nervous. A never ending roller coaster of excitement and anxiousness built inside of me. I looked down the cliff. My heart skipped a beat when the wind howled, blowing leaves and twigs in the trees. My legs started to shake.

With two bags of cat food in her arms, Manuela Wroblewski couldn't stop smiling as she walked toward the familiar shop on the comer. She was making her weekly visit to see Hussein the barber. He spotted her through the picture window of his quiet shop and burst through the door and into the sunlight.

The two hurried over to the tiny food dishes lined up in the alley Soon the sound of cat food clinked(叮当)against the bowls and several stiff tailed cats began to appear.

Here in Avsallar, Turkey, there was a cultural aversion(厌恶)to cats and dogs, those who fed the animals were often scorned(轻蔑). But Hussein paid no mind to those who glared at him. He took his time in the alley, kneeling for the longest while, stroking each cat and speaking softly. Hussein was simply a man who loved with his whole heart, and in this moment, he was lost in the comfort of his family.

As the two finished up and made their way back inside the shop, Hussein's smile faded and Manuela couldn't help but notice that he was beginning to look rather thin. Manuela, a native of Germany, has led a volunteer animal recuse program in Turkey for the last three years, but the language came slowly. Only by chance, when a multilingual (懂多国语)acquaintance arrived, did the room begin to darken as Hussein explained that he was about to lose his barber shop.

After decades in the same tiny room, Hussein had been told that he must leave. His little barber shop simply didn't pay enough rent and with so few customers calling for his "old-fashioned" services, the landlord had invited in another tenant(租客)…one who wouldn't be feeding animals outside.

Manuela's eyes began to flood as Hussein expressed his worry for the cats he cared for. There were only seven days before Hussein would move out and Manuela feared for this very survival and for that of the animals who depended on him.

It's hard to talk to dads sometimes. The roles we often expect our fathers to play—protector, provider—can make them seem impenetrable(不可理解的).That's how it was with my dad. He came to Canada at the age of ten and settled in an immigrant community. He was never much of a talker. He rarely drank, so we didn't get to see him loosen up after a few beers. He didn't tell stories about himself at the dinner table or when we went for walks in the park. He was a private person and seemed to want to stay that way.

Bringing up the many questions I had about life before I was born—his early hopes and dreams, loves and heartbreaks—let alone sharing my own feelings, felt like too much for us to handle. I didn't want to threaten the integrity(完整)of his hard shell. I had gotten used to it,and it made me feel secure.

But when my relationship and career took a hit a year ago at the same time, things had to change. I was facing serious questions about my own nature, and I wanted to know that he had faced them, too. I needed to know how he had found his way, because I felt like I had lost mine.

In a severe moment of desperation, it occurred to me that sending an email might be the key. An email can be crafted(精心制作)slowly and carefully. I could speak at a comfortable distance and give him room to adjust. He'd be up in his office—a comfortable place filled with bookshelves, dusty CD-ROMs and piles of old newspapers. I'd be at my desk in an apartment 20 minutes away.

So I wrote to him. I told him about my regrets and fears, and I asked him to answer, if he felt like it, and to share something about himself, something that would give me much-needed perspective on my life, especially on relationship and career.

Para 1:Two weeks later, his response showed up in my email box.

We're driving along a road and saw a piece of card saying:"Bungee Jumping, 5km"and an arrow pointing to the left. I couldn't even see a road going left and there was no sign of any bungee jumping, but you insisted.

"We don't have to do the bungee jumping, we can just go there and see what's happening. It'll be interesting! "As usual, you got your way. I gave in and off we went along this dirt road. After driving for ages, suddenly some trees appeared like a small wood. "This must be the place, "you said. We pulled over. I had just walked in the door after dropping off the costume I had made for a friend's daughter when I noticed the light blinking on my answering machine. Annoyed, I started to call her back-until I suddenly thought of Grandma' love and what she had once done for me long ago when I visited her in New York City.

Out of a 16-year-old's early tiring summer, I had set up a tent(帐篷) in our rural yard and intended to sleep in it, but I stayed in the house to finish watching the Lakers' play-off game. It was almost midnight and Dad had been asleep upstairs for hours when someone knocked at the front door. It never happened to me not to answer it.

To my surprise, it was a girl about my age with a bloody cut on her head. "Hi. I'm Maria. What's wrong with you?" I asked her with concern. Awkward and embarrassed, she replied: "I'm Jane. I…" she hesitated and then asked me carefully, "May I stay here for the night? I'll be off tomorrow morning" Seeing her uneasiness, I comforted her, "Take it easy, Jane. Stay with me tonight." I invited her into the house. Looking around, Jane appeared to have calmed down. "Let me treat your injury first," I said and she agreed.

I cleaned and bandaged (包扎) her injured head and then gave her some bread and meat to eat. "Want to sleep in my tent?" I asked her and she nodded. Having left her in the bathroom, I went to look for another sleeping bag When I returned, Jane was seated on the sofa, her face clouded by sadness. Walking across the dark yard, I went into tent with Jane. We lay down side by side. Caught by curiosity and concern, I turned over again again, wondering what had happen to her and how she came here. Jane seemed to have sensed that and started to speak. Jane's father died of cancer years before. Her mother did some cleaning jobs to raise her. Money was tight but her mother tried to do what she could to satisfy Jane. Several weeks before, Jane accidentally saw a fine white dress in the store window, which she fell in love with at first sight. She excitedly told her mother about that, who promised to buy it as her birthday gift. From then on, Jane was looking forward to it.

In 1945, a 12-year-old boy saw a beautiful brooch (胸针) in a shop window that set his heart racing. But the price—five dollars—was too high for Reuben Earle. Five dollars would buy almost a week's food for his family.

Reuben couldn't ask his father for the money. Everything his father made through fishing went to his mother Dora. Slim and beautiful, she was the center of the home and the glue that held it together. The housework was never-ending, and she struggled to feed and clothe their five children, but she was happy as her family and their well-being were all she cared about.

Nevertheless, he opened the shop's door and went inside. Standing proudly and straight in his flour-sack (面粉袋改做的) shirt and washed-out trousers, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding, "But I don't have the money right now. Can you please hold it for me for some time?"

"I'll try," the shopkeeper smiled. "People around here don't usually have that kind of money to spend on things. It should keep for a while. "

Reuben respectfully touched his worn cap and walked out. He would raise the money and not tell anybody, for he thought Mum would get surprised when she saw that brooch. On hearing the sound of hammering (捶打) from a side street, Reuben suddenly had an idea that he could raise money by selling the used nail bags. People built their own homes in Bay Roberts, using nails bought in bags from a local factory. Sometimes the used bags were thrown away at the construction site, and Reuben knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece. That day he sold two nail bags and hid the money in a rusty soda tin.

It was the night before Christmas and Rob was lying in bed, thinking about the next day. His family was poor, living entirely on the farm they ran, and most of the excitement of Christmas was in the turkey they had raised themselves and pumpkin pies his mother made. He rolled over to look at his old watch-it was two o'clock. Three hours later, his father would call him to get up, even if it was Christmas.

His father never talked about loving him--he had no time for such things. There was always so much to do on the farm. "Or maybe, he just doesn't love me," Rob thought. He had a reason to think so. At 5 o'clock every morning, his father would call him to get up and help with the farm work. He had to go to the barn(棚) to hold the milking pails(挤奶桶)steadily when his father was milking the cow. He had to help put the tools in place and do the cleaning after the milking. He hated it that he had to do all these things at so early time.

He was not the only one awake at this night. He heard his parents whispering in the next room. "Mary, I hate to call Rob in the mornings. He's growing so fast and he needs his sleep. If you could see how he sleeps when I going to wake him up! I wish I could manage alone. "

"Well, you can't, Adam," His mother's voice was gentle. Besides, he isn't a child anymore. It's time he took his turn. "

"Yes," his father said slowly. "But I do hate to wake him."

When he heard these words, something in him spoke: his father loved him! He had never thought of that before, taking for granted the tie of their blood. Now that he knew his father loved him, he had to do something different on this Christmas. He did save and buy them each something every year, but he wished he had a better present for his father instead of the usual tie from the ten-cent store.

I'd just returned from a beautiful autumn early- morning walk with my dog. At the front door, I dug around in my pockets for the keys. When I discovered I didn't have them, I decided to return to the paths we'd taken. I would surely spot them in plain sight.

My little dog ran in circles with excitement for repeating of our just-finished outing, I spent an hour looking, brushing aside tall grasses, but the keys remained lost. I was beginning to get upset as I thought of the consequences of losing them, so I continued to retrace (重走) our steps, but without luck.

At home again, I pulled the spare key from its hiding place, let myself in the house, and fell on the couch in exhaustion. I began to make a list of the lost keys. The house key wasn't that important as I had an extra. The mail key was a big deal because getting a new one would take a lot of time. I also had a spare car key at home, but it was sensitive. But the key fob (小饰物) attached to the keys would be expensive to replace. It was an iron heart made by my grandfather which was precious beyond measure. For some reason, thinking of it being gone forever made my tears come to my eyes. I blamed myself for losing the keys and not being more careful. In my mind, I retraced my steps again and again trying to recall where it might be but finally gave up.

That night, it turned colder and we had a snowstorm, I enjoyed a comfort food dinner, played soft music, and settled into a peaceful evening. It had been peaceful until I heard my car alarm coming from the garage. I rushed to the car with the spare key and opened it, and then switched the key until the alarm stopped. I felt red-faced as I imagined my next door neighbors being annoyed. I went back in the house but it started again. I turned it off, went back inside, but the alarm blasted (轰鸣) again. I repeated the process.

Whether we notice it or not, our child is a little reflection of ourselves. They grow up looking more and more like us. They even have similar personalities and hobbies. And in some cases, the standard of choosing a good friend.

One day, my 10-year-old Jane said, "Mom, I made a new friend at school today. Can she come over tomorrow?" Her words made me extremely happy because Jane was a shy girl and I wanted her to make some friends to bring her out of her shell.

"Sure, honey, that sounds great." I said, thinking back to my own childhood best friend, Susan. We lived across the street from each other in Washington Heights, New York. We met at the age of 10, too. Like my daughter.  I was shy and had trouble making friends. But Susan drew me out. She was one of the friendliest people in school, with shiny black hair and a mile-wide smile. Thanks to Susan. I was happy every day.

In senior high school, Susan went on a trip to Florida. This was the first time we had to be away from each other for a few days. "I'll be back soon and I will write to you as soon as I arrive." she told me. But I didn't get her phone call nor receive any mail from her. Soon, my family moved to New Jersey, making my hope of seeing Susan impossible.

Whenever I thought of him, tears came into my eyes.

The next day Jane brought her new friend home. "Hi, Mrs. Smith." the little girl said. Her hair was so shiny and black and she gave me a big smile. "My name is Jo. My mom will pick me up 2 hours later."
