Jenny was the only child in her family. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn't help weeping(哭泣) sorrowfully(悲伤地) when she thought of the scolding(责骂) from her mother. Having wandered(游荡) aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat. She stood beside a stand(货摊) for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she gave a sigh(叹气) and had to leave. The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, "Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?" "Oh, yes, but I don't have money on me," she replied.

"That's nothing. I'll treat you today," said the man "Come in." The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, the smell so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently. "What is it?" asked the man kindly. "Nothing. Actually I was just touched by your kindness!" said Jenny as she wiped(擦拭) her tears. "Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless(无情的) compared to a stranger!" Hearing the words, the seller smiled, "Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude(感激) to her?" Jenny sat there, speechless and numb(麻木的) with shock; she remembered her mother's familiar face and weathered (变形)hands. "Why didn't I think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted(感激的). Why haven't I thanked my mum for what she has done for me?" On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home

One weekend in July, Jane and her husband, Tom had driven three hours to camp overnight by a lake in the forest. Unfortunately, on the way an unpleasant subject came up and they started to quarrel. By the time they reached the lake, Jane was so angry that she said to Tom "I'm going to find a better spot for us to camp" and walked away.

With no path to follow, Jane just walked on for quite a long time. After she had climbed to a high place, she turned around, hoping to see the lake. To her surprise, she saw nothing but forest and, far beyond, a snowcapped mountain top. She suddenly realized that she was lost.

"Tom!" she cried. "Help!"

No reply. If only she had not left her mobile phone in that bag with Tom. Jane kept moving, but the farther she walked, the more confused she became. As night was beginning to fall, Jane was so tired that she had to stop for the night. Lying awake in the dark, Jane wanted very much to be with Tom and her family. She wanted to hold him and tell him how much she loved him.

Jane rose at the break of day, hungry and thirsty. She could hear water trickling (滴落) somewhere at a distance. Quickly she followed the sound to a stream. To her great joy, she also saw some berry bushes. She drank and ate a few berries. Never in her life had she tasted anything better. Feeling stronger now, Jane began to walk along the stream and hope it would lead her to the lake.

As she picked her way carefully along the stream, Jane heard a helicopter. Is that for me? Unfortunately, the trees made it impossible for people to see her from above. A few minutes later, another helicopter flew overhead. Jane took off her yellow blouse, thinking that she should go to an open area and flag them if they came back again.

One day, the Mullah, an important man in the village, found his donkey was gone when he wanted to go visit a friend. He was very angry and ran around to look for his donkey.

The Mullah ran about looking until he was too tired. He sat down to rest at his gate. A few friends came to join him "That no-good lazy donkey!" said he. "If I ever see her again, I'll sell her for a dollar!" Selling a donkey for a dollar was just a joke.

Just then the Mullah heard the sound of his donkey's feet. He looked around. There was his donkey. On her back rode a boy," Where did you find her?" asked the Mullah. "We couldn't find her anywhere."

"I knew where I would go if I were a donkey," said the boy." I found her eating grass with the sheep and goats."

Suddenly, the Mullah looked to one side and saw one of his friends holding up a dollar. On the other side he saw another with a dollar.

"I'll buy your donkey," said the two.

"I was joking!" said the Mullah.

"You didn't sound as if you were joking," said the two.

The Mullah couldn't break his word. That would be wrong for an important person in the village. He certainly didn't want to sell his donkey for a dollar. So he said, "Meet me at the donkey fair on Saturday. I shall sell her at that time. I shall sell my donkey to the one who will treat her most kindly."

Everybody was kind to animals in the village.

Paragraph 1:

So the Mullah thought out a plan.

Paragraph 2:

My donkey and my cat are very good friends.

The event that stands out in Tom's memory happened one morning when Tom was only ten years old. He was at home with his elder sister Jane. Tom was doing his homework when he heard raised voices. At first he thought nothing of it since customers in the motorcycle shop directly below their flat often became loud, but he soon realized this time it was different.

"Quick! Quick! Remove the motorcycles from the shop." someone shouted. Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When Tom opened the front door of their flat to investigate, a thick cloud of smoke greeted him. The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running and crying.

Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. They rushed out of the door and along the corridor (走廊) through the smoke.

They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Jane suddenly stopped in her track. She turned around and headed back the way they came. Tom had no idea what she was doing, but he followed her.

Jane had suddenly remembered the lady in her 70s who lived next door to them, who they called Makcik. Jane began banging on Makcik's door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around them, Tom could see many of their neighbors—some still in their pajamas (睡衣)—running for safety. The thought of fear crossed his mind.

"She would have run for safety like everyone else!" Tom cried. However, Jane refused to give up. "I know Makcik's still inside." She said she was familiar with Makcik's daily routine and was certain she would still be sleeping. She pounded against the door. "Go downstairs. Go now! Go!"

Paragraph 1:

Tom noticed the flame (火焰) was reaching up.

Paragraph 2:

Luckily, some neighbors passing by stopped and offered help.

The fourth Thursday in November is called Thanksgiving Day which has been one of the most important festivals in the United States. The theme is thankfulness for peace and happiness of family life during the past year. People usually eat roast turkey and pumpkin pie to celebrate the holiday.

There are always moving stories about Thanksgiving Day. Though the stories have different leading roles, the topics of them are the same: showing the sincere appreciation to their loved people, such as parents, siblings (兄弟姊妹), friends, teachers and so on.

I also have a moving story that happened on Thanksgiving Day. At first it sounded like a thanksgiving story, but the more I reflected on it, the more appropriate it seemed for any time of the year. The story went like this: when Thanksgiving Day was coming, a teacher gave her class an interesting task-to draw a picture of something for which they were thankful.

Most of the class might be considered economically disadvantaged, but still many would celebrate the holiday with turkey, corn, pumpkins and other traditional things of the season, like all of those symbols drawn on the holiday decorations and greeting cards. These, the teacher thought, would be the subjects of most of her students art.

All students drew their pictures as the teacher thought, except one boy-Peterson. He made a different kind of picture. Peterson seemed to be a strange student in the class. As other children played during break, he usually chose to quietly stand close by the teacher's side. They didn't know what had ever happened to him and nobody could guess how Peterson felt behind his sad eyes. He didn't like to play with the other students nor talk with them.

When the little boy was asked to draw a picture of something for which he was thankful, he drew a hand. There was nothing else but an empty hand on the picture. It was different from other pictures.

Bales left the pavement of Base Road and stepped onto snow-covered Jewell Trail. She planned a six-hour hike through New Hampshire's Mount Washington State Park. She had packed for almost every emergency and intended to walk alone.

She'd checked the weather forecast posted by the Mount Washington Observatory before she left. Based on her experience, Bales knew that her hike was realistic. Besides, she had two emergency plans and extra layers of clothing to better adjust her body temperature as conditions changed.

The hike up the lower part of Jewell Trail was pleasant. Bales felt excited as she walked up into snowy paths. The sun shone through the trees and cast a shadow over her smiling face. Less than an hour later, loads of dark clouds had replaced the sunshine, and snow covered the surrounding trees.

She still smiled. However, the weather was showing its teeth. Bales added even more layers to shelter herself from the cold winds and thick fog. She made her way across the snow-covered ridge (山脊toward Mount Washington and began to think about calling it a day. Suddenly, she noticed something: a single set of footprints in the snow ahead of her, which had been made by a pair of sneakers-typically not the type for hiking.

Meanwhile, Bales was getting colder, even though she was moving fast and generating some body heat. With strong gusts of wind screaming and attacking her back and left side, she decided to abandon her plan. The only thing, however, kept her on the trail was the sneaker tracks in the snow.

Paragraph 1:

Bales faced a dilemma about whether to follow the tracks or not.

Paragraph 2:

Her searching now turned into rescuing the man.

"You guys will do great. I love you. "

I looked up at my mom, and she smiled at me. But I didn't want to get out of the car. The car door opened, and my sister jumped out. I knew I was supposed to follow her, but I was stuck in my seat. My sister was running towards the school and looked back quickly, keeping going. I kept looking at the door, hoping she would come back out and get me. She didn't come back.

My mom had told me that my sister would show me where to go. The day before, I had pictured it all in my head. I would follow her into school, and she would show me where to go. Following her would be easy, and I wouldn't be scared at all. Now how am I supposed to know what to do?

"I have to get to work. You're going to be okay," my mom told me as she looked towards the school. 1 followed her eyes and saw more kids than I had ever seen before. I jumped out of the car, closed the door behind me and took one last look at my mom.

There was no turning back now.

I started walking into my new school. The doors were too tall and heavy for me. Not knowing where to go, I headed to the only place that I knew in this new, unfamiliar school.

I walked nervously into my teacher's classroom. It was familiar to me since I was here a few short weeks ago for kindergarten orientation (迎新介绍). 1 could hear my heartbeat in my ears. As I looked around, there were no other kids in the classroom. Maybe I went to the wrong class or it wasn't the first day of school. I wanted to go home. 1 looked around the room. There was a wall of shelves filled with toys and board games.

Paragraph 1

"Hi! Before eight o'clock, you can wait in the cafeteria or here if you want." came a familiar voice.

Paragraph 2

As the day went on, I realized I had no reason to cry.

When I was 19, I spent part of my summer at an adventure camp on Vancouver Island, supervising (照料) a group of 10-year-old girls. Towards the end of the first week, I took them on a camping. By six in the evening, we'd climbed a small mountain. The peak had trees on one side and bald rock on the other. I let the girls play in the wooded area while I arranged things for dinner.

When the screaming started, I wasn't too alarmed-I could see my group tearing through the bush and thought they'd just disturbed a bees' nest. As the first girl appeared, I asked what was going on. "Wildcat!" she gasped. The image in my head was of a house cat gone wild, but with her next breath she added, "It's attacking Alyson." I told the girls to climb on to the rocks and then ran to where they'd been playing. Alyson was lying by bush. She was on her back, eyes wide, staring at a huge cat beside her. The cat was watching me.

Anyone familiar with westerns will have seen a cougar (美洲狮) — the mountain lion that springs from the rock face on to the passerby. We'd been told how to deal with bears: "Keep still, back up, make yourself look big." But we hadn't covered cougars. I grabbed a stick and swung it into the animal's face. Startled, it took off into the bushes.

Seeing that Alyson was hurt, I set off for the first-aid box, but hadn't gone four steps when I heard a moan. Turning back, I saw the cougar crouched (蹲伏) by Alyson's head. It appeared to be eating her. This time I used a bigger stick, hit harder and held on. Once again, it disappeared, and I knelt by Alyson.

"There's no way someone can live through this, " I thought. The cat had torn deep into her neck. She had long cuts on her face. "Am I going to die?" she asked. Her heartbeat was racing but weak, the sign of a heart trembling from shock.

More than 30 years ago, As a teenager, I lived with my family in an old farmhouse in the Durham County countryside. I spent my summer days laboring in tobacco fields and my summer evenings shelling(给...去壳)peas in the backyard. My autumn weekends were often spent splitting logs and cutting wood. We had an indoor antenna(天线)which helped us tune into the few television stations we could receive.

Living where we did, we could see three or four other houses from our own, none of them within shouting distance. We knew our neighbors, some of them elderly, we usually offered them our kindness when they needed help.

Jimmy, who was seventy years old, lived alone on the far side of a tobacco field. He lost his wife two years ago. He could hardly supported himself these last couple of years since his body condition was getting even worse. We went to visit him at his home. It was a small wooden cabin with stained windows and a curtain that had been mended countless times. The poor old man would sit in an armchair by the window, holding a faded photo, and with tears in his eyes, recall happy memories of his wife.

One weekend, my father went to check on Jimmy. But a rare heavy snow happened to fall. It was so heavy that he couldn't get his old truck up Jimmy's rutted, snow-covered driveway, Nobody could understand what made him slog(奋力前行)the 400 yards or so to Jimmy's house. My brother and I were waiting anxiously at home. After a long time, he came home hurriedly and told us that Jim my was sick and out of firewood.

One winter Sunday, my little sister, Colleen, and I built the greatest snowman ever.We gave him a carrot nose, beautiful hat, cozy scarf and gloves. He was a masterpiece(杰作).

The next morning when looking outside, we smiled lovingly at him over our meal.We gave him a highfive(击掌) as we passed by on our way to school.A lot of kids went past our house, so he was the hot topic at our school that morning. It was our pride!

The day dragged on until finally we could rush home. But as our yard came into sight, we saw something wrong. The snowman was gone! We only found a broken stick here, a torn glove there and balls of snow everywhere.Worst of all, the snowman's onceproud carrot nose lay limp(无力的) and halfeaten.

What had happened? We were both astonished and angry. But then, we were only kids, who wouldn't have anything taking away our happiness.Actually we knew only one thing: Our snowman would rise again. And so we rebuilt him.

The next day we came home to find another mess on the front lawn(草坪). For the rest of the week, the destruction was repeated daily. Each afternoon we'd return to find our snowman had fallen apart, and then we built again.

By Saturday morning, we had a plan.We borrowed a really big bucket(水桶) from Mom, filled it with water and left it outside. The next morning, it was frozen solid. We packed snow all around the ice block as the base(底座) of the snowman. Then we built the other parts of it once again. The trap was set, and we waited for the snowman bullies(破坏者) to come.

Being the only deaf boy in the class meant Alex always had to sit in the front row directly in front of his sign language interpreter, Ms. Barringer. He hated sitting in the front row. He'd rather be able to see everyone and everything, not just Ms. Barringer and the chalkboard. In fact, having to sit in the front was the only thing he didn't like about his new school.

This morning he felt particularly uncomfortable. A few minutes earlier, he had swallowed water at the fountain. Now he felt a straining (一阵拉紧) in his stomach as a bubble (气泡) of wind rose into his throat.

He glanced behind him. Ms. Barringer waved to get his attention and then pointed to his half-finished composition to let him know he should be writing and not looking around the room. Alex tightened his chest muscles to hold back the burp (打嗝) as his mother told him it made an offensive noise. However, he remembered the day before, in the crowded hall, he had burped and nobody had even noticed.

Last year, none of this had mattered. A few of his friends' parents at the Lakeside School for the Deaf had warned that he might find going to a hearing school too hard. But Alex wanted to be like his older brother, which meant attending Wilson Middle School. He had told everyone he wasn't afraid, but now that he was here, he found that fitting in wasn't easy. It was the fourth day of school, and he was still eating lunch by himself.

No longer able to hold back the burp, he covered his mouth in case there was a sound and let the burp go. Every kid looked up and stared at him. Ms. Barringer shook her head as if to say, "Oh, Alex, you've done it now." When he saw that Brian, the boy next to him, was laughing, he felt his face burning.

"Mom!" I screamed as I looked through the window, "Why is my Ink Spot sitting in Mrs. Cleary's window?"

Mom pushed past me to confirm it. Sure enough, across the street was Ink Spot cleaning himself in the window of Mrs. Cleary's sitting room. I couldn't believe my eyes. He was my cat, not Mrs. Cleary's. She had already adopted twelve cats. Why must she keep my cat?I could feel anger boiling up inside me. Meanwhile, Ink Spot's leaving without any signs upset me. A sense of being left out hit me hard.

Ink Spot was special for me. After my baby sister's birth, "my" parents' time was taken by her. It seemed no one in the family cared about or even noticed me. Worse still, I was packed off to a kindergarten. I hated being left out from the bottom of my heart.

It was when mom noticed me weeping in a corner one night that things began to change. After that, Ink Spot came into my life. Every night, he curled(卷曲)up beside me in bed and he was there for me after school when I raced home just to be with him.

I fell in love with Ink Spot the first time I saw its tiny black and white kitten, for which I called him Ink Spot. Mom and daddy beamed with pleasure as my eyes danced with joy again. It was the first time that I had smiled since my little baby sister came into the family. As for me, he was more than a cat. Actually, he was my life.

But today when I came home, Ink Spot was in Mrs. Cleary's window. I wanted him back. But mom insisted that if Ink Spot stayed at Mrs. Cleary's, that meant it was where he wanted to be. "No!Mom, Ink Spot is my cat", I protested wildly but I had to admit the truth of mom's words. Standing on the sidewalk, I was at a loss as to what to do. Staring at Ink Spot for a while, I couldn't stand the anger any longer.

At dawn, Taylor opened her sleepy eyes and looked out of the window at the foggy field below. "NO!" she cried, now fully awake. Buttermilk the cow was in Mama's daisy patch (雏菊地) .

I must have forgotten to lock the gate last night, Taylor thought as she pulled a sweater over her head. Mama was planning to sell daisy bouquets (花束) at the fair next week, but Buttermilk was eating the flowers.

Taylor hurried outside and grabbed the lead rope on the wall. "Why can't you stay in the field?" she called to Buttermilk as she headed across the yard to the daisy patch.

Buttermilk still stood there chewing flowers. Annoyed, Taylor thought to herself, "When I grew up, I'll be an artist and paint pictures all day. I'll never own a cow. Too much trouble." Just as Taylor was about to throw the lead rope onto Buttermilk's collar, the family dog, Red, rounded the corner of the house. Startled, Buttermilk took off, tearing through the daisies and across the yard. She finally ran through the open gate and into the field.

"Thank goodness!" Taylor said as she closed the gate and secured the lock.

She turned to look at the flower garden, where most of the daisies were either eaten or trampled (踩踏).

Mama came out of the house. "What's going on?" she asked. She looked sadly at her garden.

"I forgot to lock the gate," Taylor said. "I'm so sorry."

"I know you are" Mama sighed and gave Taylor a hug. "You learned an important lesson today."

Taylor's heart was heavy as she went back into the house. She had to think of a way to make it up to her mother.

Teddy was a bear of habit. Every morning he woke up at the same time, stretched, scratched, and yawned(打哈欠). Every morning the bees in his yard delivered three jars of honey so that Teddy ate the same breakfast he'd eaten since he was a hairy baby: toast with honey and tea with extra honey.

Next came his daily routine: practicing the rolling skill and running errands(做杂事). At night he'd read, and then have one last cup of honey tea before bed.

Life was sweet. Until one morning...

One morning something abnormal had happened. There was no honey. The bees had gone on strike!

Teddy's breakfast wasn't the same without honey. Without his honey tea, he couldn't practice rolling, or run errands, or read at night. Teddy became deeply discouraged.

Just then he heard someone say, "Hey, you! In the fur coat!" It was a very small bee with a very loud voice. "We need to talk!" said the bee.

"Talk? Hmmph!" complained Teddy. "I let you all live in my yard. All I ask for is a few jars of honey. You should be grateful rather than strike!"

"A few jars?" said the bee. "Buddy, we deliver three jars of honey to you every day, every month, every year! Do the maths, Einstein."

"The hive(蜂巢) is in ruins!" the bee continued. "It's all we can do to keep the walls from falling in! The roof leaks! Wind blows through the holes!"

The bee showed Teddy the garden. "Look!" the bee said. "Weeds everywhere. We have to fly miles away to find enough flowers to make our honey. So we voted to strike."

"You are taking us for granted." the bee declared. "You want honey? We won't come back unless things have changed. It's up to you, bear." And with that, the very small bee flew off.

The thought of losing his honey upset Teddy greatly. He sat down to think about the situation.

"Maybe I've been too selfish." Teddy said to himself, "I've never thought about what the bees need.

How can I make this right?"

"Open this one!" Chloe cried, handing her older sister a package from under the Christmas tree.

Laila opened it. "Cute," she said, pulling out the velvet (天鸦绒)pillow Chloe had made. "It'll match my dorm room."

"I sewed it without help," Chloe announced. "And look, I put two special pockets for you to put…"

But Laila was distracted. "That reminds me," she interrupted Chloe. '*Mom, can I take the sewing machine (缝纫机)back to college with me? I'm helping with costumes for a play."

As Laila and Mom chatted, the pillow fell to the floor. Chloe stared at it. Would the pillow end up in the giveaway pile? Would the time spent sewing be ignored?

Her throat tightened. "I'm going to the kitchen to get more cider," she mumbled.

For most of Chloe's life, what had seemed fun to Chloe had been pesky (讨厌的) or babyish to Laila. But after Laila left for college, things changed. She often phoned Chloe complaining how hard it was to be away from home. But now she was treating Chloe like the pesky little sister again.

"There you are!" Mom said, rushing into the kitchen. "We're due at Grandma's in 30 minutes. We'll have to open the rest of the gifts later."

Chloe quickly changed her clothes, sneaked the pillow out to the garage and stuffed it into the giveaway pile. The specially chosen photo of the whole family in one pocket would never comfort Laila when she was homesick.

For the rest of the day, Chloe's stomach felt as if it had a rock in it. Laila had spent the whole holiday with the grown-up cousins. She'd hardly said a word to Chloe! Well, the next time, Chloe would simply ignore her when Mom asked her to answer Laila's phone.

"Where are you going?" Laila asked as Chloe headed upstairs. "To my room," Chloe said coldly. "But you still have a gift under the tree!" Laila reminded her. Chloe shrugged. Laila grabbed her hand and pulled her to the living room. She handed Chloe a package. "I'm pretty sure you'll like it."

Jenny was very nervous. She had a swimming competition in the morning and could not sleep. She tossed and turned all night. She was no stranger to competition. In fact, she loved it. Jenny was very athletic and was not only part of a swim team, but a soccer team, as well. She even won a soccer championship with her teammates last year. But this particular swimming competition was important. She had made it all the way to the finals and didn't want to let her teammates down.

When her alarm went off at 6: 00 am, she hit the snooze button and rolled onto her side, wishing she could just stay in bed all day. Having slept so poorly, Jenny was not at all ready for the day. After a few minutes, she stretched her arms above her head and yawned before throwing her covers back and climbing out of bed.

She was terribly anxious about the competition, so much that she couldn't even eat breakfast. It felt as though she got butterflies in her stomach. Jenny's mother looked concerned. "You have to eat something," she said. "It's important to keep your strength up."

"I know, I'm just not hungry this morning," Jenny replied, picking at her eggs with a fork. All she could think about was facing the competition. What if she performed poorly? What if she disappointed her coach and teammates? She wouldn't be able to forgive herself.

Jenny's mom sensed her daughter's worry and gave her a comforting pat on the back. "You'll be great, dear. Just do your best. That's all that matters."

Jenny felt a bit of relief and appreciated her mother's kind words. But by the time she got to the athletic club where the swim meet was being held, that feeling of comfort had disappeared. She went to the locker room to prepare for the competition.
