One evening, a workman was exhaustedly making his way home after work, when he stopped to rest by the side of the road. A woman came by, pushing a cart full of flowers. The smell of her blossoms so filled the air with sweetness that it seemed to take away the tiredness in his bones and lift his spirits. He had never experienced such wonder from the many blooms of his own garden. "How much must I pay, or what must I do, to have some of your wonderful flowers?" he asked the woman.

"Oh, sir," she said, "take what your wish for."

"What return must I make for them?" he asked again.

"Your gratitude is enough," she said, "and it's a pleasure to share the beauty of flowers with you."

So the man filled his arms with blossoms and hurried joyfully home. His wife and his children were also glad over the remarkable flowers, for they, too, discovered that the sight of them was a delight and the smell of them refreshed the soul.

In order not to lose his valuable possession, the man planted the blossoms in a small plot of land behind his house. Sunlight and water kept them amazingly beautifulthey still performed their fantastic magic.

Every day, his children took delight in playing in the yard and always sang and danced around the flowers. They all liked the lovely gift their father had received and even invited many of their friends to share this fantastic magic together. When children came to play near the flowers, the man over and over warned them against carelessness and wild play for fear that they walk on the flowers and damage them. But the flowers remained strong as long as there was enough sun and water to nourish(滋养) them. Nowhere else could the man or his wife or children find such remarkable relaxation from tiredness, such comfort in sadness, such spiritual nourishment as those remarkable flowers provided.

With the news spreading and more people coming to appreciate his treasure, the man became even more concerned about his remarkable flowers.

At first, Michael Surrell didn't see the black smoke or flames shooting from the windows of his neighbors' home. He and his wife had just parked around the corner from their own house in Allentown, Pennsylvania, when they got a call from one of his daughters: "The house next door is on fire!" He went to investigate. That's when he saw a woman crying desperately on their porch.

"The baby's in there!" the woman cried. Though the fire department had been called, Surrell, then 64, instinctively ran inside. "The baby" was 8-year-old Tiara Roberts, the woman's granddaughter.

Entering the burning house was like "running into a bucket of black paint," Surrell says. The thick smoke caused him to stumble blindly around, burned his eyes, and made it impossible to breathe. The conditions would have been dangerous to anyone, but for Surrell, who has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (慢性阻塞性肺病), they were life-threatening.

After a few minutes in the smoke-filled house, he retreated outside to catch his breath. Surrell knew he couldn't hold his breath for long. Taking a deep breath, he went in a second time. The darkness was overwhelming. Yet because the house had a similar layout (布局)to his, he found the stairs and made it to the second floor. He turned to the right and was met by intense heat. He was already out of breath.

His throat and lungs burned as if he'd breathed in fire instead of the smoke and soot in the air. Every blink stung his eyes. All he could hear was the crackling and popping of burning wood. Then a soft but distinct moan (呻吟声) emerged. Still unable to see, Surrell fell to his knees on the hot wood floor. He crawled toward the sound, feeling around for any sign of the girl.

There was no question of what I wanted to be when I grew up—a radio announcer. The silky voices of the announcers served as a constant companion who brought life, music and hopes to a nine-year-old only child in the 1930s.

My family settled in Wagga in 1938. Every Saturday at five o'clock the local radio station 2WG would air a children's programme. Kids were invited to perform their talents. I used these opportunities to polish my voice for the time when my dream might come true.

Working in radio might involve typing. So, I went to the Wagga Commercial College to learn to type. In 1945, when I graduated, I wrote a letter to apply to the Wagga radio station for a job. Surprisingly, I received a telegram asking me to attend an interview. On the day of the interview, I waited in the reception area with mixed feelings of excitement and calm resolution to do my best. The kind-looking manager surprised me by saying, "I'm afraid we have no plans for young women announcers."

"In any case, your preference is for classical music?" he asked. "We use all manners of music here."

"Oh," I said in a confident voice. "I have catholic(广泛的) taste in music." He took me to meet the copy chief. "This is the man you will be working for," he smiled. I was to work six days a week from nine to five, plus Friday nights. The salary was pitiful with the long hours, but I was in!

After a short while I settled into my responsibilities. On quiet Friday evenings, a helpful announcer offered to show me how to operate the controls at the announcer's desk. He taught me how to put the records on the turntable, bring in the relayed news, and all sorts of tricks I could ever never have mastered alone. This man became my mentor(导师). It certainly wasn't part of any formal training scheme but the experience was invaluable. Sadly, after about six months, it seemed that I would never get the chance to use these skills.

Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day Robert and Henry were going home from school, when, on turning a corner, Robert cried out, "A fight! Let's go and see!"

"No," said Henry. "Let us go quietly home and not meddle with(插手) this quarrel. We have nothing to do with it and may get into mischief(trouble). Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don't want them to worry about me. "

"You are a coward, and afraid to go," said Robert, and off he ran. Henry went straight home, and in the afternoon went to school as usual.

But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn't want to play with him together.

Henry was sad but he wasn't angry with Robert for his rude behavior, because he learned that true courage is shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys' laughter and continued to go to school and study as well. However, Robert didn't invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn't go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.

A few days later Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth. He struggled, and screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, but they did not even try to help him.

As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks(盯着他们).
One day, Jatin took Neha's shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It
wasn't until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Neha agreed and the two decided to share Jatin's running shoes. Neha's school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Jatin. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Jatin often arrived late and was warned by the school.
A long distance race was  going  to  be  held for the  boys in the city.  When  Jatin learned that the  third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.
The day of race arrived. Jatin had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Neha and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided(碰撞) with Jatin from behind and Jatin crashed to the ground.

Alexis Vaughan, 17, sat quietly in the passenger seat of her dad's car. She stared out the window at the Preston, Idaho, cornfields.

Alexis, a high school student, let her eyes lazily scan the landscape for wildlife. Still, she was terrified when a deer came into view about 200 yards in front of them, just a few feet off the road. "Dad, there's a deer, there!" Alexis said, rolling down the window for a better look. It was a three-point buck (雄鹿) — a male deer with sharp, three-pronged antlers (角) on each side of its head.

As the car moved closer, Alexis saw that the buck's head was bent toward the ground. Then she heard a scream. A few seconds later, she saw an arm fly up near the buck's head. Alexis realized the buck was attacking a woman. Sue Panter, a 44-year-old mother, had been out for her morning run. The buck had come out from the tall corn and began following her. Having lived in rural Idaho for years, Sue knew that most bucks got frightened by humans. But this buck edged closer, even when she threw at it with a handful of gravels (石子).

Sue went to pick up a log to use for self-defense, and the buck attacked her. It lifted her with its antlers (角) and threw her into the air. Sue could feel the horns punctured (刺穿) her leg and blood flowed down her leg. Within seconds, the buck had pushed her off the road and into the cornfield.

When Alexis and her father pulled up, the buck was rolling Sue like a rag doll. Alexis looked into the woman's terrified eyes, and before her father had even stopped the car, the 104 pound teenager jumped quickly out of the car and down the slope toward the buck. She was kicking and hitting it to get its attention. Then Michael, her father, who had followed his daughter, wrestled the buck away from the women by holding the antlers.

It was raining pretty hard on Halloween, but that wasn't going to stop my little sister Kate and me from trick-or-treating. We decided to start at Miss Parson's house. Miss Parson was loved by us kids who lived near by because she often shared her self-made cookies with us. We usually finished them in a second, especially when we were hungry after class. Sometimes, when we visited her or did something for her, she always gave us surprise.

Kate and I wondered what kinds of treats she'd offer. As we walked down the street, I held an umbrella, a bag for Candy, and my sister's hand. Jack-o-Lanterns gave soft light along the street. Spider webs hung in all the windows. Parents who were dressed up like monsters (怪物) stood in doorways. After we had walked a few blocks, we were wet from head to toes, and I felt Kate was trembling with cold.

There was a light on at Miss Parson's house, but there were no ghosts, goblins (小妖精), or Jack-o-Lanterns. We climbed up the steps and saw Miss Parson through a window. She was drinking a cup of hot tea.

"Maybe she doesn't celebrate Halloween," Kate said with a sigh, disappointedly.

"Well, even if she doesn't, she usually likes it when we visit her," I said and knocked on the door.

Miss Parson seemed surprised when she opened it and saw our dressing. "Is today Halloween?" she asked. "I completely forgot. I am so sorry!"

Miss Parson rushed us into her house. ……

The next morning, a hot and sweet discussion about Miss Parson and Halloween spread among us kids.……

Sally had anxiety disorder trouble that made her fail to speak in social situations. I am a nurse and use Bella to help children in my community, to bring them comfort and confidence the way only a dog can. I thought back to the day when I'd first brought Bella to the school.

That morning in January, her teacher led us to a room." Sally hasn't spoken outside her home in two years," she told me." Her parents have taken her to doctors, but nothing has worked." A little girl stood shyly just inside the doorway. Her eyes brightened when she noticed my dog.

"This is Bella," I said." She does tricks. Would you like to see?"

Sally nodded. I motioned with my hand. Bella lay down and then rolled over. Sally's eyes lit up. I showed Sally the hand signals for various commands. She was a natural with Bella, maybe because she couldn't rely on the spoken word herself. Bella sensed that and responded. Soon Sally was able to put Bella through her paces all on her own. I could see her standing taller, more sure of herself each time we met.

One morning in March when she was working with Bella, I heard a tiny voice, barely a whisper, "Good dog." Sally didn't take her eyes off Bella, but I wanted to jump for joy. Sally spoke a little more each week, only to Bella at first, but then to me. Later, she started giving voice commands with her hand signals and her confidence rose.

Now, five-year-old Sally stood nervously in front of her kindergarten class, with Bella, my trained dog, sitting calmly by her side. All the eyes of her classmates were focused on Sally. They were waiting for her to speak. It was June—only one week of school left—but they had never heard her voice. Not once.

On Wednesday night, it was the closing time of the mall. But there was an hour's work, at least, to get everything cleaned up. It would be 11:00 pm before I finally got home. I hadn't even had time to have dinner. I was starving. My feet ached. My whole body was filled with tiredness. I couldn't wait to go to bed. But it would be only 6 hours before the alarm went off at 5:00 am for my day job.

Things had been tight for over a year now. My husband Paul's business had taken a huge hit. I have a fulltime job at a day care center and somehow do my homework for my college class too. Then I had to work nights at the mall. Without me taking my second job, there wouldn't be enough money to pay the bills. Let alone buy any Christmas presents for our 15yearold daughter, Marie. No one wanted to wake up on Christmas morning to an empty tree.

I barely even saw Paul and Marie anymore. Marie was growing up, but a teenage girl still needs her mom. I worried about her, about us. Was she eating enough? Keeping up with her schoolwork? I wasn't afraid of sacrifices. Everyone had to work hard for the family. I knew I was blessed to have two jobs, when millions of people couldn't find one.

How I hoped to quit my job at the day care center and obtain a fulltime degree. I'd dropped down to one class a term. If I quit that, there was no way I'd find the willpower to try again. Besides, wasn't I always telling Marie to keep hoping and never give up?

My mind went back to the conversation I'd had with Marie earlier. Paul had dropped her off at the mall, where she was getting picked up for a babysitting job. "Remember we're going Christmas shopping this night," she said. "Now I'll even have my own money. See you later. "

The floor was nearly done. The boss asked me to leave.

Human beings are smart. However, it seems that people are gradually losing their smartness as smartphones become more and more important assistants in their lives, reported news website Record Japan on Oct. 22. As we rely too much on technology instead of our brains, many people have lost three basic abilities, said the website.

The first skill many people have lost is remembering phone numbers. Because phone numbers are stored in smart phone contacts, there's no need to dial a number or look at it again.

And some people may also have lost their sense of direction because navigation apps can guide people anywhere they want to go. These apps can even find shortest routes for you and avoid traffic jams. But the worst lost skills may be social ones, meaning that some people are becoming socially inept(无能的). People often bury themselves in their smart phones. As we're too addicted to what's happening in the virtual world, some of us have lost conversational skills and sometimes can't even tell whether a person is happy or not.

In August, researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, studied 51 students aged 11 and 12 who had over five hours' screen time every day. Their task was to tell the emotions of 48 pictures of faces that were happy, sad, angry or scared. The children made an average of 14.02 mistakes at the beginning. But after a five-day camp without electronic (电子的) products, they made only 9.41 mistakes on average. "If you're not practicing face-to-face communication, you could be losing important social skills," concluded professor Yalda Uhls from the research.

Luckily, people still have a chance to get these abilities back. You should try to keep your parents' numbers in mind for emergencies. You should also pay more attention to street signs and stores, which will help you to draw a mind map and stop you from getting lost. And the easiest solution to social skill loss is to take a break from electronic devices because we are social creatures. We need device-free time.

I received an urgent call from my aunt. "Turn on the TV. Granny's on the Channel 10 news. " It turned out that Granny had made a sandwich run for her office and was stopped at a red light downtown. She had the window rolled down to enjoy the breeze when a man rushed up to the driver's side window, intending to carjack (劫车) her.

Now, what the would be carjacker couldn't have known was that this woman simply wasn't "a granny". This was Nancy Johnson—the same woman who owned and lived on a Texas cattle farm, drove her own tractors, and dug her own post holes to lay fence. The week before, she had shot a rattlesnake and chopped off its head with a shovel. She was the proud owner of the new minivan (小型货车) she was driving. In other words, she was not your normal kind of granny.

The carjacker leaned into the open window, one hand stuffed in his pocket, and said, "Get out of this car. I have a gun, and I will shoot you." A statement like that would have terrified anyone else. Instead, Granny saw it as a challenge. "If you really had a gun in your pocket, you would've pulled it out and led with that first," she shouted at him, apparently unworried.

She was right. The criminal didn't have a gun. He instead reached into the window, grabbed her, and tried to pull her out of the van. He pulled open the door, wildly catching Granny's arms. Granny leaned her shoulder inside to press the horn (喇叭) and started yelling to make people around notice what was happening. With the door now open, she held tight the steering wheel with one arm and started kicking the man anywhere her foot could make contact. This tall woman had quite a reach.

Oliver sat up in his sleeping bag, feeling glad. On a low-hanging branch a few yards away sat a great gray owl (猫头鹰)! Its face was so noticeable that he recognized it immediately. Great grays were rare and endangered, and he might never see one again. Oliver was still staring when he realized his dad was sitting up too. "See that?" His father nodded, a look of wonder on his face. "A great gray owl……I never thought I'd actually see one."

In the morning, Oliver wandered around the campsite with his binoculars (望远镜). Then he saw a big nest in an Oregon ash. He climbed up the tree and looked inside—four smooth white eggs! He fished out an old digital camera and took a bunch of photos. Back at the campsite, he showed the photos to his dad, who agreed: owl eggs.

Then Dad handed him a cellphone, "Read the news." Oliver read the headline: "New Shopping Mall Under Discussion." The new mall would have Oliver's favorite sporting goods store. Sweet, But when he read its location, his smile faded. "That's right where we saw the owl. They can't do that!" Oliver said. "I don't think they should build that mall there." He looked down at the news again. "On Tuesday there's a town council meeting to vote whether to build it there. Can I go?" "That's an excellent idea," said his dad.

But when Oliver biked over to the meeting, no one took him seriously.

"That's nice that you're interested in birds," said the town council president. "Why not write a paper for your science class?" The president was treating the 14-year-old like he was 5.

"I have photos of a nest," Olive insisted. "With eggs in it. Owls are breeding (繁殖) in that area. "

The president glanced at the photos. "The date stamp on these says 200; that's 15 years ago!"

"How could that be? I just took them!" said Oliver. But he knew the camera was old. Something must have gone wrong with it.

When the boys and girls got on the bus early in the morning, they noticed Vingo, who sat in front of them, staring at a photo, completely in silence. At noon, the bus pulled into Howard Johnson's, a service area, and everybody got off the bus except Vingo. The youngsters began to wonder about him. When they came back, one of the girls sat beside him and introduced herself.

"Want some drink?" she asked.

Vingo smiled and thanked her and became silent again.

Late in the afternoon, they stopped at another Howard Johnson's, and this time Vingo went out. The girl insisted that he join them. He followed them to a restaurant and ordered a cup of black coffee and some cookies. When they returned, the girl sat with Vingo again. After a while, slowly and painfully, he began his story and told her that he had been in prison for the past four years, and now he was going home.

"Are you married?" asked the girl.

"I don't know," he said softly.

"You don't know?"

"Well, when I was in prison I wrote to my wife," he said, "I told her that I was going to be away for a long time, and that if she couldn't stand it, if the kids kept asking questions, and if it hurt her too much, she could just forget me. I'd understand. I told her she didn't have to write to me. And she didn't. Not for three and a half years."

"And you're going home now, not knowing?"

"Yeah. Well, last week, I wrote to her again. We used to live in Brunswick and there's a big oak (橡树) tree just as you come into town. I told her that if she didn't have a new man and if she'd take me back, she should put a yellow handkerchief on the tree and I'd get off and come home. If she didn't want me, forget it--no handkerchief and I'd go on through."

"Wow," the girl burst out, "Wow!"

She told the other youngsters, and soon all of them were in it.

There is nothing more wonderful than the smell of the Adirondack air! It fills your lungs with purity and freshness that motivates a love for living. Every weekend in the summer, my father would plan a trip from our home in upstate New York to one of the splendid lakes nestled among the tall pines and thick forests of the Adirondack Mountains. There were no favorites; instead, each lake was an adventure to explore and enjoy.

One trip that I will never forget was a visit to Oneida Lake at the foothills of the mountains. After arriving at the lake beach area, we emptied the car of our picnic supplies, towels, blankets and beach chairs, carrying them through a wooded path that seemed like a forever distance. Once we located the perfect picnic spot, my dad, sister and I ran into the splashing waves with our beach ball, leaving my mother behind to" "set up". In the lake, we immediately played "monkey in the middle" for at least an hour, and then after retiring the ball, my father let us dive from his knee, throwing us up in the air and turning us over like thick pancakes on a grill. This timeless game went on and on as our begging for "more, more" never stopped.

When we finally tired of our games, my dad stopped to watch my older sister. She loved synchronized swimming (花样游泳) and started practicing skills that her team used in competition. My father, being an athlete himself, was absorbed in her show. I was sad that no one was playing with me; no one was watching me. I became bored and jealous watching her show off. I was in sulk (愠怒)and decided to swim by myself and try some of my sister's skill son my own in deeper water, far from both of them. The waves were getting stronger, but I didn't care. I just wanted to do what my sister could do so that I could catch my father's attention.

"Mary, I hate to call Rob in the mornings. He's growing so fast and he needs his sleep. If you could see how sound he sleeps when I go m to wake him up! I wish I could manage alone. "

"Well, you can't, Adam. "His mother's voice was quick and light. "Besides, he isn't a child any more. It's time he took his turn. "

"Yes, "his father said slowly, "But I sure do hate to wake him."

A few days before Christmas that year when he was fifteen, Rob heard these words, and something in him spoke: his father loved him! He had never thought of that before, for neither his father nor his mother talked about loving their children—they had no time for such things. There was always so much to do on the farm.

They were poor, and most of the excitement for Christmas was in the turkey and the pies his mother made. His sisters sewed presents and his mother and father always bought him something he needed, not only a warm jacket, maybe, but something more, such as a book. And he saved and bought them each something, too.

He had gone to the ten-cent store and bought a tie as usual. It had seemed nice enough until he lay thinking the night before Christmas. He wished that he had a better present for his father.

A thought struck him like a silver lightning. Why should he not give his father a special gift in the barn(牛棚)?He could get up early, earlier than four o'clock and he could move quietly and slowly into the barn and get all the milking done. He'd do it alone, milk and clean up, and then when his father went in to start the milking, he'd see it all done. He laughed to himself as he gazed at the stars, it was what he would do, and he mustn't sleep too sound.

As a woman walked down the streets one day on a cold day in February, she spotted a beggar. The man looked dirty, and didn't even wear a proper coat. Every passer-by looked at him with contempt鄙视. Not like they had anything against him, but merely because of who he was: a dirty beggar.

"Sir? Are you all right?" The lady asked him. The old beggar thought that this well-dressed, obviously wealthy lady, was laughing at him." Leave me alone!" he shouted. She did not move." Are you hungry?" she asked with a gentle smile." No, I've just had lunch with the president." the beggar replied sarcastically(讥讽地). Her smile did not fade, and she tried to pick him up." What do you think you are doing, woman!" the beggar cried.

"Is there a problem ma'am?" a passing policeman asked." Not at all, officer. I'm just trying to get this man on his feet." the woman replied. Surprised, the policeman said:" That's old Jack, he has been here for years. What have you got to do with him?" "I am taking him to the cafeteria to get warm and eat something." the woman answered.

Angry, the old beggar now shouted:" Are you crazy!? I don't want to go in there!" But then he felt strong hands lifting him up." Let me go, officer. I didn't do anything!" "Don't miss this good chance to feed yourself, Jack." the officer advised. Together, they dragged Jack into the cafeteria. She stared at Jack and said:" Jack, do you remember me?" "Well, you do look familiar." Jack said while examining her face.

It's hard to talk to dads sometimes. The roles we often expect our fathers to play—protector, provider—can make them difficult to understand. That's how it was with my dad. He came to Canada at the age of ten and settled in an immigrant community. He was never much of a talker. He rarely drank. He didn't tell stories about himself at the dinner table or when we went for walks in the park. He was a private person and seemed to want to stay that way.

It seemed impossible to ask him questions about his early life before I was born—his early hopes and dreams, his loves and heartbreaks, let alone share my own feelings with him. I didn't want to threaten the integrity((完整)of his hard shell. I had gotten used to it, and it made me feel secure.

But when my relationship with my wife and career took a hit a year ago, things had to change. I was facing serious problems about my own nature, and I wanted to know whether he had faced them too, and I desperately needed to know how he had found his way, because I felt like I had lost mine.

In a severe moment of desperation, it occurred to me that sending an email might be the key. An email can be crafted slowly and carefully. He'd be up in his office—a comfortable place filled with bookshelves, dusty CD-ROMs and piles of old newspapers. I'd be at my desk in an apartment 20 minutes away. So I could speak at a comfortable distance and give him room to a just.

So I wrote to him. I told him about my regrets and fears, and I asked him to answer, if he felt like it, and to share something about himself, something that would give me much-needed perspective on my life, especially on relationship and career.

Two weeks later, his response showed up in my email box.

I closed the email and started to cry.

One weekend in July, Jane and her husband, Tom, had driven three hours to camp overnight by a lake in the forest. Unfortunately, on the way an unpleasant subject came up and they started to quarrel. By the time they reached the lake, Jane was so angry that she said to Tom, "I'm going to find a better spot for us to camp" and walked away.

With no path to follow, Jane just walked on for quite a long time. After she had climbed to a high place, she turned around, hoping to see the lake. To her surprise, she saw nothing but forest and, far beyond, a snowcapped mountain top. She suddenly realized that she was lost.

"Tom!" she cried. "Help!"

No reply. If only she had not left her mobile phone in that bag with Tom. Jane kept moving, but the farther she walked, the more confused she became. As night was beginning to fall, Jane was so tired that she had to stop for the night. Lying awake in the dark, Jane wanted very much to be with Tom and her family. She wanted to hold him and tell him how much she loved him.

Jane rose at the break of day, hungry and thirsty. She could hear water trickling (滴落) somewhere at a distance. Quickly she followed the sound to a stream. To her great joy, she also saw some berry bushes. She drank and ate a few berries. Never in her life had she tasted anything better. Feeling stronger now, Jane began to walk along the stream and hope it would lead her to the lake.

As she picked her way carefully along the stream, Jane heard a helicopter (直升飞机)r. Is that for me? Unfortunately, the trees made it impossible for people to see her from above. A few minutes later, another helicopter flew overhead. Jane took off her yellow blouse, thinking that she should go to an open area and flag them if they came back again.

I had a dream from primary school: to work in television. My parents owned a little grocery store, so we were definitely not fancy people. Thankfully, my dad had raised me to have a lot of confidence. He often said, "You can do anything you want to do." My dad was particularly supportive. He was my steady rock——always there for me.

With his help and encouragement, I was admitted to the radio and television arts program at Ryerson in Toronto. I really loved the program and worked hard and I was named the most outstanding graduate. I felt like I was already living my dream. I began to think that maybe I could apply for an internship(实习资格) in CBC or CTV.

Luckily, Global Television had just started broadcasting in Canada that year. I thought to myself: I'm new and they're new, so if I'm going to get to know cone person at Global, it might as well be the president. I was scared, but I knew deep down inside that this was what I wanted. When I called my dad and told him my plan, he said, "Good, Faye. That's exactly what you should do. "

With my heart just about pounding out of my body, I called up the president of Global Television. Suddenly Mr. Slaight was on the phone. "I've heard that your studio facilities are amazing. I could come at eleven o'clock on Monday or eleven o'clock on Sunday for a tour. What would suit you better?" I caught him totally off guard. He stuttered a bit, and then picked a day. When I hung up, I was scared but excited.

I arrived at the studio on the appointed day. When Mr. Slaight took me around, he looked at me and said, "What do you want?" He sounded furious but curious. "All want is a chance to audition(试镜). I just want you to know my face. That's all I'm asking. "

I didn't know whether I'd ever hear from him again, but two weeks later, his secretary called, "Mr. Slaight wants to know if you'd like to come and audition for a new school life show." I immediately answered, "Sure!"
