George's mother was very poor and was sick. Instead of having bright fires in winter, she had nothing to burn but dry sticks, which George picked up from under the trees.

One fine day in July, his sick mother sent him to the woods. He was to stay there all day, to get as much wood as he could collect.

It was a bright, sunny day, and George worked very hard, so that by the time the sun was high, he was hot, and wished for a cool place where he might rest and eat his dinner. While he hunted for a spot about the bank he saw among the grass some fine, wild strawberries.

"How good these will be with my bread and butter!" thought George Lining his cap with leaves, he set to work eagerly to gather all he could find, and then seated himself by the river.

It was a pleasant place, and George felt happy and contented. He thought how much his mother would like to see him there, and to be there herself, instead of in her dark room in the village.

George thought of all this, and just as he was lifting the first strawberry to his mouth, he said to himself. "How much Mum would like these!" and he stopped, and put the strawberry back again. "Shall I save them for her?" said he, thinking how much they would refresh her, yet still looking at them with a longing eye.

"I will eat half , and take the other half to her", said he at last, and he divided them into two heaps(堆). But each heap looked so small, that he put them together again.

"I will only taste one." thought he. As he again lifted it to his mouth, he saw that he had taken the finest and he put it back. "I will keep them all for her." said he with great happiness, and he covered them up nicely ready to take home.

Many years ago my grandfather had a small farm and chickens. One morning he sent me out to collect fresh eggs. He became concerned when I didn't return after a short time. When he came looking for me I jumped with joy, but he saw tears in my eyes and noticed that I was in an empty chicken house.

Noticing I was not in a good mood, he asked, "What was wrong?" I told him tearfully, "That dirty rooster, who is now gentle, in your presence, came pecking(啄食) after me and all the hens started cackling(咯咯叫),which scared me, and I ran into the next hen house for safety." He took me by the hand and we walked right by the now quiet dirty rooster and comfortable hens. We sat under the apple tree, and he related the following story. "Did you notice how that rooster and hens behaved when I came in? Totally different than when you first came in." I shouted, "The rooster and hens seemed to come at me."

My grandfather then said, "That's a new rooster the neighbour gave me. All your life you are going to come across people who will act like that rooster and hens. Only in different ways! It's natural for that rooster to protect this house and his hens. The rooster is the leader and the hens are followers. The same with people! It doesn't matter whether they are men or women. There will always be people who will try to lead your life and if you let them, you will become like the hens."

"But to be the leader, you have to first be able to lead your own life and be the rooster of your actions. You can be like the rooster leading the hens. Most of us in life are followers, like the hens and some stay hidden in their own chicken house, like you did."

The darkness was gathering as she wobbled(颤颤巍巍)in high heels along the side of the highway. The car had come to an unexpected stop, and like a normal teenager she did the only thing she could think of...get out and walk.

It was cold and late, and home was far away. This could be a long night. If only someone would stop and offer her a ride. She prayed for help and dragged herself forward.

The lights of a truck shone from behind as it approached. "Maybe he will stop," she hoped. The brake lights flashed on as it stopped. Next instant, the cab door opened. A wordless invitation was extended and she understood. Without hesitation the girl climbed up into the seat and closed the door. Slowly the truck pulled back onto the road and disappeared into the night, never to be seen again.

I woke up in a cold sweat, alarmed. Was that a dream or was it a vision? It was unbelievably real, and the girl was my daughter! I jumped from my bed and ran to her room. Her bed was empty.

I stood in horror trying to think why she had not come home. As the mental fog began to lift, I remembered she was visiting her friend that evening. Perhaps she stayed there for the night. It was 1: 30 a. m, but I raced to the phone and dialed a number.

"Hello?" The voice was heavy with sleep.

"Hey. Sorry to wake you. Becki didn't come home tonight and I was wondering if she stayed at your place?"

"No, she left here a few hours ago. She should have been home at least by midnight!" The voice on the other end began to reflect my own panic.

Over the next forty-five minutes I alternated between lying in pray and pacing the floor in anxiety.

At 2:15 a.m. lights appeared as a car turned up our long driveway. I could tell immediately that it was not my daughter's car.

Growing up  my parents and older brothers all smoked. Being a child of the 80s, it was normal for the adults to be smoking inside and during trips in the car. There just wasn't the same awareness of the dangers of second-hand smoke exposure that there is today.

I remember the day when I started smoking. I was 11. I was trying to impress one of the “bad boys” at school. I stole tobacco from my father and rather clumsily rolled a cigarette that I took to school with me. Smoking gave me a sense of autonomy and choice over my own life, and at 11 it was the ultimate act of rebellion. Soon I got addicted to it and was taking cigarettes from dad's packets on a regular basis. I knew he never started counting them until he had less than half a pack left.

After a while I got caught smoking at school. My parents struck a deal with me: if I stopped smoking at school, they would purchase more tobaccos for me to smoke at home. This was perhaps a misguided attempt to keep me out of trouble. I jumped at the idea, and simply got smarter about smoking at school.

I smoked right through my teens and early 20s, spending thousands of dollars on cigarettes, sacrificing food and other necessities to ensure I had cigarettes.

I tried many methods to quit, but each time I would go back to smoking. I have always had a love-hate relationship with cigarettes. On the one hand, they were a friend to me when I had no other, one constant in my life I could rely on. On the other hand, I despised (鄙视) being dependent on something that was going to kill me.

I grew concerned about the effect my smoking would have on my children and I felt guilty putting cigarettes over other things that could have benefited my family. It is with great shame that I admit that I continued smoking even after having a daughter born with cystic fibrosis (囊性纤维). My daughter fights every day to breathe — and here I was intentionally causing damage to my lungs.

Bales left the pavement of Base Road and stepped onto snow-covered Jewell Trail. She planned a six-hour hike through New Hampshire's Mount Washington State Park. She had packed for almost every emergency and intended to walk alone.

She'd checked the weather forecast posted by the Mount Washington Observatory before she left. Based on her experience, Bales knew that her hike was realistic. Besides, she had two emergency plans and extra layers of clothing to better adjust her body temperature as conditions changed.

The hike up the lower part of Jewell Trail was pleasant. Bales felt excited as she walked up into snowy paths. The sun shone through the trees and cast a shadow over her smiling face. Less than an hour later, loads of dark clouds had replaced the sunshine, and snow covered the surrounding trees.

She still smiled. However, the weather was showing its teeth. Bales added even more layers to shelter herself from the cold winds and thick fog. She made her way across the snow-covered ridge (山脊toward Mount Washington and began to think about calling it a day. Suddenly, she noticed something: a single set of footprints in the snow ahead of her, which had been made by a pair of sneakers-typically not the type for hiking.

While waiting to pick up a friend at the airport in Portland, I had one of life-changing experiences. It happened only two feet away from me.

In order to find my friend among the passengers, I noticed a man walking toward me carrying two light bags. He stopped right next to me to greet his family.

First he smiled to his younger son, about six years old, as he laid down his bags. They gave each other a long hug(拥抱). I heard the father say, "It's so good to see you. I missed you so much! " His son smiled shyly and replied happily, "Me, too, Dad!"

Then the man stood up, cupping (捧着) his son's face in his hands and said, "You are already quite a young man. I love you very much, Zach! "Then the father gave son a warm hug.

At the same baby girl was squirming(来回扭动) excitedly in her mother' s arms The man said, "Hi baby girl!" as he gently took the baby from her mother. He kissed her face. The little girl felt satisfied in her father's arm.

After that, he handed the baby to his son and gave his wife the longest and warmest hug He gently said, "I love you so much!" They looked at each others eyes with big smiles on their faces.

At that moment, they reminded me of newly -married couples, though it couldn't be possible by the age of their son. Full of admiration, I asked, "Wow! How long have you two been married?" "Almost 10 years in total." the father replied.

A lady wanted a birthday gift from her husband. For many months she had longed for having that beautiful ring, and knew for sure her husband could afford it. She told him that was all she wanted. On the morning of the birthday, her husband told her how proud he was to have such a good wife, and how much he loved her. As it was expected, he gave her a beautiful gift package. She couldn't wait to open it but only found a Bible inside. Angrily, she raised her voice and said to her husband, "With all your money wasted, you give me a Bible?" She was so upset and disappointed that she only touched the cover of the book and left for another town far away. They hadn't contacted each other since then.

Many years passed and the lady was very successful in business. She owned two large companies and devoted all her time to running them. With time going on, she realized her husband was very old, and thought perhaps she should go back to visit him one day. But before she could, she received a letter telling her that he had been seriously ill and wanted to see her again for the last time. Without hesitation she drove on the way back almost at once.

When she arrived at his house, sadness filled her heart. He was lying in the bed and couldn't say even one word. He saw her, looking happy and excited. He pointed at something beside his pillow.

Yesterday a heat wave hit the town. "It's too hot! Let's go for a swim after we finish our chores (家务活)at home!" Joseph complained to his little brother, Loren. As the boys walked toward the Little Colorado River, they saw Sam and Frank, who ran to join them. "Swimming's just what we need to cool off!" Sam said, kicking a rock.

"Sure it is," Frank agreed. Then he looked at the field they were passing. There were many round watermelons in Farmer Davis's patch(小块地)."Hey, Joseph" Frank said, "do you have the courage to climb over that fence and get us a ripe(成熟的)watermelon?"

"I don't know." Joseph said.

Loren looked uncomfortable. "I don't think that's a good idea."

"Come on," Frank said, pushing Joseph toward the fence. "No one will ever know."

Then Frank started to climb the wooden fence. Joseph felt bad but climbed the fence and jumped with Frank into the watermelon patch.

Joseph took the closest melon and raced back to the fence. The other boys laughed and took turns carrying the heavy melon as they ran to the river. Finally they broke open the watermelon. The sticky sweet juice was delicious! But Joseph regretted what they had done and wished he hadn't taken the melon.

On the walk home, they finished off the last piece of the melon just as they passed the watermelon patch again. Joseph lowered his head quickly when he saw Farmer Davis in the field. He waved at the boys, who quickly threw the melon rinds (皮) to the side of the road. Davis looked upset as the boys hurried by. Joseph felt terrible. It was wrong to take the watermelon. He knew he had to tell Farmer Davis what they had done and ask for forgiveness(宽恕).

That evening Farmer Davis visited Joseph and Loren at their house. "One of my biggest watermelons went missing," he said, "I was wondering if you boys happened to see anyone in my field as you passed by today. "

My father asked me to chat with him for a while. Actually, I was unwilling to listen to his talking endlessly as he always did. My father was a lawyer, but I never wanted to go to law school or follow his path through life.

As expected, he cleared his throat and started to say, "Er… What… What do you really want to do in the gorgeous future?"

I was silent for a moment playing with the cell phone. I kept thinking, "Should I tell him my true thoughts? What if he gets angry? What if I let him down?" Later I replied, "Well, I want to be a writer."

I guessed this may be not the answer he would expect. But he answered surprisingly, "Interesting idea!"I was shocked, speaking in a low voice with hesitation(犹豫).

"Are you serious, Dad?"

"Well, you need confidence and good preparations, and you still have plenty of time. You need to find out what you really enjoy now. Look, it's late. Let's take the boat out tomorrow morning, just you and me. Maybe we can catch some crabs for dinner, and we can talk more. "

Early next morning we packed up the equipment and set off along the coast. We didn't talk much, but enjoyed the sound of the seabirds and the sight of the coastline.

There were no big waves and bright sunlight at that time. "Let's see if we are lucky, "he said, and picked up a cage with a rope tied to it and threw it into the sea. We waited a while, then my father stood up and said, "Give me a hand with this." Then we pulled up the crab cage onto the deck(甲板).

To our joy, the cage was filled with dozens of soft shell crabs. Squatting(蹲) down, we watched them for a moment. At first they fought against each other to climb out hard, trying to escape(逃跑). Many were pulled back into the cage. Later, some gave up, but there were still some crabs trying to escape again and again.

My great-grandfather, my grandfather and my father are farmers, and so are all my family. My father has a fixed idea that I would become a farmer too. Although I respect him and am indeed skilled at doing some farm work, I don't agree that I should automatically follow in my father's footsteps.

When I was a teenager, my father happened to take me to an airport which belonged to one of his friends. It was the first time I had seen an aeroplane in real life. Knowing that I had never been on board, my father's friend Tom offered me an opportunity to fly with him in his small aeroplane. I quickly accepted his offer! When we took off, I felt nervous but thrilled. Being up in the clouds and looking at the view below was unlike anything I had ever felt. I was just enjoying it. I assumed being a pilot would be the most awesome thing in the whole world. From that day a thought crept into my mind that I wanted to become a pilot, but I doubted whether my father would support me. After all, it was a totally different path from what he had planned for me. Therefore, I put the thought to the back of my mind, because I knew he would still insist on holding onto his previous idea.

Anyway, besides helping my father on the farm, I would frequently visit Tom's airport. Gradually, I got familiar with every button and switch on the aircraft and I learned a lot about planes, such as how to fill the plane with fuel, how to check the engines and so on. But what I had learned just left me wanting more, so I decided to go to college to become a professional pilot.

Scout could clearly remember the night she had to leave her home in Poland. It was the beginning of World War II and her family had to escape as soon as possible. She quickly packed a suitcase with a few pieces of clothing, her diary, and her most prized treasure, a silk scarf. Scout and her best friend, Betty, had persuaded their parents to buy them matching scarves, which they took as a symbol of their friendship. Scout didn't know she was going to America and would not be returning.

Scout kept that special silk scarf for many years. One day she decided to give it to her granddaughter, Eliza, to wear to her first job interview for good luck. Scout was afraid that Eliza would lose the scarf, but the granddaughter promised, "Don't worry, Grandma. Nothing's going to happen to your scarf. You'll see that it's going to bring both of us luck. "And with that, Eliza kissed her grandmother and left for the interview.

Leaving the interview, Eliza felt confident that she had got the job so she decided to celebrate by going to a restaurant. Sitting at her table, Eliza felt an elderly woman staring at her for a longtime.

"I'm sorry. Do I know you?" Eliza asked.

"I'm sorry, dear, but you remind me of my best friend," the old woman replied. "She looked like you and used to wear a scarf just like yours." Eliza listened carefully, with her eyes and mouth wide open. She had heard stories of her grandmother's best friend and knew the meaning of the scarf. Could this woman be Betty, her grandmother's childhood friend?

For me, it was normal to feel lost at the inter-camp track. Four camps of kids were ready to lead their teams to a blue ribbon and win the day. Not me. I was too little to be the leader and too skinny to be an athlete. I knew this by the time I was twelve, because my camp counselors and the other kids reminded me of it every chance they got. So when our camp needed a fourth runner in the two-mile race around the lake, I knew I was no one's first choice.

I hid in the shade of a maple tree as they called the names of the runners my body tensed as I heard a counselor call, “Fred! Where is Fred! He is in this race!” It was Barry. He spotted me under the tree. “Fred! We need a 12-ycar-old who hasn't been in other events to run the two-mile!”

He gave me a push towards the starting line. Having no confidence and trying to save myself from the shame of taking the last place as four camps watched, I pleaded with him.

“But I don't know the way around the lake!”

“You're in. Just follow Bill!” Barry smiled.

Bill was my friend and the fastest runner in our camp. And then Barry said, “When you make it to the last stretch on the field, just throw your head back and run.”

At the starting line, I stood next to Bill and trembled.

“On your mark... Get set...” The gun cracked and sixteen of us took off. I stayed close on Bill's heels, a little too close for Bill, I guess. He shouted at me, “Back off!”

I did. Two guys passed me, but I kept my eyes on Bill.

It was tiring. The distance was widening between Bill and me. We made the tum from the dusty road onto the muddy, wooded trail that would go around the lake back to the field. Through the trees, I saw Bill trip over a tree root and fall. A runner from another camp passed him.

Sara Savick remembers one special Easter when she was nine years old. Her parents gave her a baby duckling in a yellow basket.

“Mom said later that she bought the little duck because she felt sorry for it,” recalled Sara. The people at the pet store colored the feathers pink for Easter. Sara named the duck Pinky.

Sara's mother really didn't think the baby duck would survive very long. But to her surprise, Pinky grew and got stronger and stronger. Soon, the little duckling was a healthy, hungry duck with white feathers.

“We fed Pinky oatmeal, cooked and uncooked, and small pieces of vegetables,” said Sara. Pinky lived inside the house with Sara and her family. She specially fancied taking baths with Sara. Everyone treated Pinky as a family member.

But just when everything appeared to be perfect, the night of the “talk” came. Sara's Mom and Dad sat her down, explaining that the best thing for Pinky was to live a normal duck life, with other ducks. It was not natural for ducks to live indoors with a family, her father told her. He added Pinky needed to swim in ponds and do all the same things that ducks in the wild do.

Sara started to cry, knowing what was going to happen. Sara's parents decided to take Pinky to a park, which was two miles away. There was a pond with a lot of other ducks. Pinky would have the chance to live a natural life and Sara could still visit her.

The big day came, Sara and her parents put Pinky in a box and drove to the park. Sara said that Pinky did not look happy; maybe Pinky was convinced that she was a human, not a duck.

A vacation with my mother

I had an interesting childhood: It was filled with surprise and amusements, all because of my mother—loving, sweet, and yet absent-minded and forgetful. One strange family trip we took when I was eleven tells a lot about her.

My two sets of grandparents lived in Colorado and North Dakota, and my parents decided to spend a few weeks driving to those states and seeing all the sights along the way. As the first day of our trip approached, David, my eight-year-old brother, and I unwillingly said good-bye to all of our friends. Who knew if we'd ever see them again?  Finally, the moment of our departure arrived, and we loaded suitcases, books, games, camping equipment, and a tent into the car and bravely drove off. We bravely drove off again two hours later after we'd returned home to get the purse and traveler's checks Mom had forgotten.

David and I were always a little nervous when using gas station bathrooms if Mom was driving while Dad slept: "You stand outside the door and play lookout while I go, and I'll stand outside the door and play lookout while you go. " I had terrible pictures in my mind: "Honey, where are the kids? " "What? ! Oh, Gosh. 。I thought they were being awfully quiet. " We were never actually left behind in a strange city, but we weren't about to take any chances.

On the fourth or fifth night, we had trouble finding a hotel with a vacancy. After driving in vain for some time, Mom suddenly got a great idea: Why didn't we find a house with a likely-looking backyard and ask if we could set up tent there?  David and I became nervous. To our great relief, Dad turned down the idea. Mom never could understand our objections. If a strange family showed up on her front doorsteps, Mom would have been delighted. She thinks everyone in the world is as nice as she is. We finally found a vacancy in the next town.

Long ago, there was a big apple tree. A little boy loved to come and play around it every day. He climbed to the top of the tree, ate the apples, and took a nap under the shadow. He loved the tree and the tree also enjoyed playing with him.

As time went by, the little boy grew up and he no longer played around the tree. One day, the boy came back to the tree, appearing sad. "Come and play with me, " the tree asked the boy gently.

"I am no longer a kid;  I won't play around trees anymore, " the boy replied, "I want toys. I need money to buy them. "

"Sorry, but I don't have money. However, you can pick all my apples and sell them. Then, you will have money. " The boy was so excited that he picked all the apples on the tree and left happily. The boy didn't come back after that.

The tree was upset.

One day, the boy returned and the tree was so joyful. "Come and play with me, " the tree said.

"I don't have time to play. I have to work for my family. We need a house for shelter. Can you help me? " "Sorry, I don't have a house. But you can cut off my branches to build your house. " So the boy cut all the branches of the tree and left with delight.

The tree was glad to see him happy but the boy didn't appear since then. The tree was again lonely and sad.

One hot summer day, the boy returned and the tree was delighted. "Come and play with me! " the tree requested.

"I am sad and becoming old. I want to go sailing to relax myself. Can you give me a boat? " "Use my trunk to build the boat and you can sail and be happy. " So the boy cut the tree trunk to make a boat. He went sailing and did not show up for a long time.

I wish my mother had a ring like those the ladies wear at the hotel", said Hiram Green to himself one day. Hiram was the son of a fisherman, but the fisherman had died when Hiram was a little boy. Hiram's mother took on sewing work to earn money to support herself and her son. He helped her when he could out of school hours, and during vacation time. He had two uncles who had taught him how to catch shrimps (虾). With the money he earned by selling them, he could buy things for his own use or pleasure. He had a "bank" almost full of what he called his "shrimp money."

The sight of the flashing diamonds on the hands of some of the summer visitors at the fishing village in which he lived had added a new article to the list of beautiful things his mother would own someday. He had heard that just one single diamond was sometimes worth five hundred dollars or more. This had discouraged him very much.

But one day, he happened to pass a shop in the neighboring town and saw a number of diamond rings displayed in the window. He stopped fascinated (被吸引住的), and pressed his face against the glass eagerly to see if any prices were marked upon them. Imagine his surprise when he saw upon the largest one8 - a tag (标签)marked $4. 75. He looked again to see if he had made a mistake. Perhaps it was $475. But no, he knew enough about figures to see that he was right the first time.

He went home as fast as he could, and ran up into his bedroom. Then, he opened his "bank" and counted its contents. "Three dollars and twenty-two cents!" he cried. "I'll have that ring before another week. " Hiram worked early and late for the next few days. He caught more shrimps than he had ever caught in the same length of time, and sold them readily.

Lucy was very nervous. She had a swimming competition in the morning and could not sleep. She tossed and turned all night. She was no stranger to competition. In fact, she loved it. Lucy was very athletic and was not only part of a swim team, but a soccer team, as well. She even won a soccer championship with her teammates last year. But this particular swimming competition was important. She had made it all the way to the finals and didn't want to let her teammates down.

When her alarm went off at 6: 00 am, she hit the snooze button and rolled onto her side, wishing she could just stay in bed all day. Having slept so poorly, Lucy was not at all ready for the day. After a few minutes, she stretched her arms above her head and yawned before throwing her covers back and climbing out of bed.

She was terribly anxious about the competition, so much that she couldn't even eat breakfast. It felt as though her stomach was doing somersaults (翻腾). Lucy's mother looked concerned. "You have to eat something," she said. "It's important to keep your strength up."

"I know, I'm just not hungry this morning," Lucy replied, picking at her eggs with a fork. All she could think about was facing the competition. What if she performed poorly? What if she disappointed her coach and teammates? She wouldn't be able to forgive herself.

Lucy's mom sensed her daughter's worry and gave her a reassuring (令人宽慰的) pat on the back. "You'll be great, dear. Just do your best. That's all that matters. "

Lucy felt a bit of relief and appreciated her mother's kind words. But by the time she got to the athletic club where the swim meet was being held, that feeling of comfort had dissolved (消融). She went to the locker room to prepare for the competition, but when she opened her gym bag, she was quite surprised.

Paragraph 1. She didn't expect to find a handwritten note.

Paragraph 2. She saw her soccer uniform and realized she had grabbed the wrong bag

Steve was the most amazing person in all of Minneapolis, and he was my cousin. By the age of 19, Steve was a star baseball player at the University of Minnesota. I wanted to be exactly like him. So when Steve asked me to go with him on a spring fishing trip in northern Minnesota, I was excited!

After planning the trip, we gathered clothes and supplies, and began our great adventure. We reached the Superior National Forest in northern Minnesota by carly evening. On our way to the campsite, Steve pointed to a s mall house faraway in one of the mountains, saying that it was the ranger station (护林站) where the forester worked.

Finally, after a long walk, we reached the campsite and set up the camp as the sun was setting. Steve knew all the tricks of an experienced wilderness camper. After we gathered enough wood from the forest, he started the campfire using only stone and steel—no matches. For supper we feasted on freeze-dried beef, wild rice and pea soup. I ate greedily after all that work.

Tired enough, we climbed into our sleeping bags early and talked about our plans for fishing the next day. We were still talking quietly when a sudden north wind picked up; the temperature dropped, and it began to snow. Seve found a way to increase the temperature inside the tent He dragged a log (原木) from the forest to the opposite side of the campfire. Then he wrapped aluminum foil(铝箔) around the log. The heat from the fire reflected of the foil and into the tent. Son images of lake fish were filling my dreams.

The snow had stopped, but sometime later a powerful wind must have kicked up the flames of our dying fire. I was abruptly awakened by Steve. Our tent was on fire. Frightened, I ran out of the tent immediately. The tent collapsed(倒塌) with Steve inside. Without any thought of endangering myself, I reached into the burning tent and pulled him to the icy lake. Fortunately, we were not seriously hurt.
