There was a boss who made a contract with his workers: he will pay their salary each week, but not in cash. Instead, the workers would choose some goods in a shop, which equal the value of their salary. Then he will pay the cash to the owner of the shop.

But one day, one of the workers complained to his boss, “The shop owner said 'no cash, no goods'. And he requested us to pay in cash.” For that reason, the worker asked the boss to pay him in cash, too. The boss agreed. After a while, the shop owner came to the boss, asking him to pay for his workers.

The boss was confused and looked into the issue, and finally found out that the worker told a lie. However, he paid the shop owner as usual, because he must keep his promise, even he was cheated and had to pay more money.

Good merchants won't scrap(废除)their contracts. They won't sign contracts easily and usually chaffer(论价)for their benefits if they have to sign them. But after that, they will definitely follow them whatever the price.

读后续写

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

On my way home, I found a wallet which contained only three dollars and a letter that looked as if it had been in there for years. The envelope was worn and the only thing that was clear to read on it with the return address. The letter was written almost 60 years ago, which told Michael, the recipient(收信人), that the writer could not see him anymore because her mother forbade it. Even so, she would always love him. It was signed "Hannah."

I called information in the hope that the operator could find a phone listing for the address on the envelope. The operator helped me find the woman who bought Hannah's parents' house 30 years ago. She remembered that Hannah had to place her mother in a nursing home several years ago.

I called the nursing home. A man told me the old lady had passed away but Hannah was staying with them. Even though it was late at night, I asked if I could come by to see her. "Well," the man said hesitatingly, "if you want to take a chance, she might be in the day room watching television."

I drove over, and the night nurse and a guard greeted me at the gate. Accompanied by the nurse, I went up to the 3rd floor. In the day room, the nurse introduced me to Hannah.

I told her about finding the wallet and showed her the letter. The second she saw the envelope, she took a deep breath and said, "Young man, this letter was the last contact I ever had with Michael. I love him very much. But my mother felt I was too young. Michael Goldstein was a wonderful person. If you should find him," she hesitated, almost biting her lip, "tell him I still love him. You know, I never did marry…"

I said good night to Hannah. At the gate, the guard asked, "Was the old lady able to help you?" I told him she had given me a last name which might help me find the owner of the wallet.

Laurie sat quietly in the empty dressing room. She had not competed since the accident. As she waited for her turn to skate, Laurie was very nervous. Today was very important in her comeback (复出). "If I can win today," she thought, "I can skate in the World Cup next year."

Before Laurie had her accident, everyone had said that she was the one to beat.

She thought back to that car accident where her right knee was badly injured. She spent six total months on recovery, treatment and practice because she hoped to regain her skill.

"Hello, Laurie," one of her friends burst in. "How's the knee? Is it going to slow you down?"

"I guess we'll find out tonight," Laurie said.

"There's a girl named Jinny, strong in everything. She's the only real competitor you have to beat," the friend said and hurried out.

Hearing that, Laurie decided to show her most difficult jump. "If I don't try it, I won't stand a chance," she thought. "Does anyone believe that I can still win?"

Suddenly her right knee sent pain up and down her leg. The doctor said it would do that for a while. "What makes you think you have a chance tonight?" she said to herself.

After the pain passed, she moved slowly to warm up. Then she said firmly, "I must win!"

At that moment, a young woman hurried in with a skate equipment bag. She put some of her belongings onto a chair. Her bag fell to the floor. "Hi, I'm Jinny Jordan," she said.

Laurie felt uncomfortable as she looked at Jinny. "So this is my competitor," thought Laurie. "Because of her, I may lose tonight."

"I'm Laurie Collins," Laurie told Jinny. "Something fell out of your bag, Jinny."

As Jinny began to gather her belongings, the door opened.

"Jinny," someone called, "your tape of music is missing. You are the next one! Laurie, after Jinny."

"Oh, my God! I thought I had handed it in hours ago, the green box with my name on," screamed Jinny, hurrying out.

One day, when I was a first-year student in high school, I saw a kid from my class walking home from school. His name was Kris. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday? He must really be a nerd (书呆子)."

I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on. As I was walking, I saw a gang of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt. His gasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him. He looked up, and I saw terrible sadness in his eyes.

My heart went out to him. So I jogged over to him, and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, I saw a tear in his eye. As I handed him his gases, I said, "They are bad guys! They really should be punished. "He looked at me and said, "Hey, thanks!" There was a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.

I helped him pick up his books and asked him where he lived. As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before. He said he had gone to private school before now. I would have never hung out with a private school kid before, but we talked all the way home, and I carried his books.

He turned out to be a pretty cool kid. …

For many years, I had a recurring (重复出现的) dream. I was a little girl again, rushing about, trying to get ready for school.

"Hurry, you'll be late for school," my mother called to me.

"I am hurrying, Mom! What did I do with my books?"

Deep inside I knew where the dream came from. It was about some unfinished business in my life. As a kid, I loved everything about school. I loved books, teachers, tests and homework. Most of all I longed to someday march down the aisle (通道) to receive my diploma. That seemed more appealing even than getting married.

But at 15, I had to drop out because my parents couldn't afford tuition (学费). My hope of getting a diploma was dead, or so I thought. Pretty soon, I married and had three children, and I thought: "There goes my diploma."

Even so, I wanted my children to be educated. But Linda, our youngest child, had juvenile arthritis (幼年型关节炎) in her hands and knees, which made it impossible for her to function in a normal classroom. I felt really sorry for her and I didn't want her to live her life with regret. I didn't give up hope of her being back to school in some way.

One day, I saw an ad in the newspaper for evening courses. "That's the answer, "I said to myself. Linda always feels better in the evening, so I'll just sign her up for night school.

Linda was busy filling out enrollment (入学) forms when the secretary said: "Mrs. Schantz, why don't you come back to school?"

I laughed: "There's no way! I'm 55!"But he persisted, and before I knew what I had done, I was enrolled for classes in English and crafts. "This is only an experiment," I warned him, but he just smiled. So, I told myself to try for just a semester and to see if it would work. Anyway, my dream was still there in my heart.

When I was 17, I read a magazine article about a museum called the McNay Art Museum, once the home of a watercolorist named Marian McNay. She had requested the community to turn it into a museum upon her death. On a sunny Saturday, Sally and I drove over to the museum.

"Do you have the address?" Sally asked while we were on the way.

"No, but I will recognize it. There was a picture in the magazine" I answered confidently.

"Oh. There it is." I pulled my car slowly over a house which seemed like a house with heavy smell of life rather than a former residence (故居).

Surprisingly, nobody was at the gate and admission was free. We opened the door and entered, excited. A group of people sitting around a table stopped chatting and started at us.

A sweet girl in her teens locked her eyes on us and welcomed us with a sweet smile, "Hello, but who are you looking for?"

A man stood up and said almost at the same time "May I help you?"

"No," I said. "We're fine."

Tour guides got on my nervous. What if they talked a long time about a painting you were not that interested in? Sally had gone upstairs. The people in the hall seemed very confused, keeping their eyes on me with curiosity. What was their problem? Some nice sculptures were well placed along the staircases (楼梯) and some paintings from Van Gogh or Picasso were hanging on walls and I appreciated them and highly praised the most beautiful house. Suddenly a picture of a man surrounded by a warm family caught my eyes and I also spotted the sweet girl among them.

"This is the most beautiful house I have visited." said I, turning sharply, almost scaring the girl standing behind me.

"The most beautiful house? The most beautiful house!" She murmured.

"Am I at the McNay Art Museum?" asked I.

The first day of my school, our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn't know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned round to find an old lady looking up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being. She said, "Hi handsome. My name is Rose. I'm eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?" I laughed and enthusiastically (热情地) responded, "Of course you may", and she gave me a big hug. "Why are you in college at such an age?" I asked. She jokingly replied, "I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, and have a couple of kids..."

"No seriously," I asked. I was curious about what may have motivated (激发) her to be taking on this challenge at her age. "I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one!" she told me.

After class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milkshake. We became instant friend. During the next three months, we would leave class together and talk nonstop (不停顿地) every day. I always liked listening to this "time machine" as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.

Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon (校园图标) and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and showed happiness at the attention upon her from other students. She was living it up.

At the end of the semester, we invited Rose to give a speech at our football banquet (盛宴). I'll never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and stepped up to the stage.

On a sunny Saturday in June, Alyson, 3, squealed(尖叫) with laughter as she and her mother, Marlen, played hide-and-seek in the front yard of their home. With Marlen close behind, tiny Alyson flashed into the backyard of an elderly neighbor. About halfway across the yard, Alyson suddenly disappeared, seemingly swallowed whole by a barely visible opening in the ground. Marlen screamed.

The neighbor's caretaker, Luz, 26, was preparing dinner in the neighbor's kitchen and assumed the shrieks were the sounds of children playing. But she ran outside anyway and found Marlen sobbing and Alyson's sister Damary, 25, kneeing on the grass, dialing 911.

"Alyson fell in the hole!" Damary cried to Luz. Luz gave a quick glance down the hole in disbelief and saw only darkness. Then she heard Alyson's wails(哭泣) from deep underground. "Hang on there, sweety. We'll get you out soon. "

Luz ran inside the house and down to the basement for a ladder, which happened to be not very long. She then settled for a gray extension cord(延长线) to use as a rope with which to rappel(用绳索下降) into the hole. Back in the yard, she and Damary used their hands to dig at the hole, widening the opening from 7 inches in diameter to about 20 inches. Marlen sat on the grass, too distracted to help.

At the thought that Alyson might get hurt and was too young to grasp and climb the rope on her own, Luz made up her mind to go down herself. When the police detective Aaron arrived a few minutes later, Luz was already in the hole up to her waist.

"Get out of here," the officer told Luz, lifting her up by the arm. "It's dangerous for you."

"It's more dangerous for the Baby," she argued, "She's going to die."

My parents and I had just driven down the narrow mountain road from Marrakesh with all its sharp bends, and had finally arrived at Merzouga. Before us stretched the unending sand dunes (沙丘) that marked the beginning of the Sahara.

Our vehicle set off, quietly running over the sand and small stones. It wasn't long before we were surrounded by enormous sand dunes, towering above us on all sides. The wind was blowing grains of sand from the tops of the dunes, the sun was beating down hard and bright, and the sky was a deep shade of blue that I had never seen before. The wild beauty of the desert was about to reveal itself. There was not a plant to be seen. The desert appeared completely empty, which was calming and threatening at the same time.

Eventually, as the last rays of sunlight were falling on the sand, we arrived at our desert camp. Stars were already shining brightly in the darkening sky and it was getting cold with the approach of the night. I grabbed my bag and headed towards the warm campfire. I was starving and rushed to put a steak on the barbecue. We enjoyed two days in the camp with camel riding and campfire parties before we set off for Kenya.

A few days after our departure from the camp, we were very near to our rest camp in the Amboseli National Park. Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, rose up over the plains before us. Tall grasses and trees dotted the plains, which were alive with the African wildlife. Giraffes, with their long necks, were pulling leaves from the highest branches. In the distance, elephants were eating grass, ears flapping lazily as they moved slowly over the plains.

The rest camp was in sight. Several huts made from brick settle across a large pool of water. The walls reflected the afternoon sun. My father, against my mother's advice, decided to drive through the pool of water that stretched across the dirt road.

Jenny was a pretty eight-year-old girl.

One day when she and her mother were checking out at the grocery store, Jenny saw a plastic pearl necklace, by which she was totally defeated. How eagerly she wanted it! But when she saw the price, her heart sank a little. She gathered up her courage and asked her mother if she would buy it for her. Her mother said, "Well, it is a pretty necklace, but it costs an awful lot of money. I can buy you the necklace, but when we get home, we should make up a list of housework that you can do to pay for the necklace." Jenny agreed immediately, feeling a burst of joy. So her mother bought the pearl necklace for her. Jenny worked on her housework determinedly and earnestly every day. Soon Jenny paid off the pearls.

Jenny had a very loving daddy. When Jenny went to bed, he would read Jenny her favourite story. One night when he finished the story, he said, "Jenny, do you love me?" "Oh, yes, Daddy, you know I love you," the little girl said delightedly, with a broad smile on her face. "Well, then, give me your pearls." Hearing that, Jenny froze there, an anxious expression twisting her face. "Oh! Daddy, not my pearls! But you can have Rosy, my favourite doll. Remember her? You gave her to me last year for my birthday. Okay?" "Oh no, darling, that's okay." Her father brushed her cheek with a kiss, gently and calmly. "Good night, little one."

A week later, her father once again asked Jenny after her story, "Do you love me?" "Oh yes, Daddy, you know I love you," the little girl murmured softly, trying to escape from her father's eyes. "Well, then, give me your pearls. ""Oh, Daddy, not my pearls! But you can have Ribbons, my toy horse. Do you remember her? She is my favourite." The little girl begged. "No, that's okay," her father said, smiling broadly and sweetly and brushed her cheek again with a kiss. "God bless you, little one. Sweet dreams."

Last night, my partner John and I went to the levees (堤岸) where I was relearning how to run. He supported on his bike and I went as fast or as slow as my old legs wanted to take me. Ahead of us was a very old man with a plastic bag who seemed to be unable to walk a straight line. John said, "You keep running, and I will check on him."

John was holding his hand. John told the man, "We are going to come back this way. If you are still here, we will check on you." The man said he was fine but he was going to stay down for a bit. He was on the ground at the bottom of the levee and off a walkway that backed up into other people's homes. We ran on for 10-15 minutes or so and turned around.

John rode ahead to see if he was still there. When I got to the spot, there was John and the man. The man didn't look fine — he was stumbling (蹒跚而行) around and seemed lost.

The man in the meantime tried to climb up the levee and fell again and as he sat there, I walked down. I said, "Hi, my name is Mia, what's your name?" He laughed and looked at me. I said light-heartedly, "I am relearning how to run. I didn't realize it was so difficult." He said, "Oh my son and I run too — yeah it's not always easy."

It was starting to get dark. Turns out the man's name was John also. I said, "Shall we walk together, John?" He said, "Okay." He didn't want me to grab his hand or arm to help him, so I said, "I'll just stand by you if that is okay." "That's okay," he said.

We walked down the levee together with John riding behind. Through our walk he swerved (急转弯) from either side of the levee — I stayed calm and moved to either side casually trying not to look like I was blocking.

Bob, the son of a high official and the team leader, as well as Fatima, Norbert and Sally, planned to discover a hidden treasure they had heard about. They arrived at a wood, which lost itself in the shadowy distance. Bob was wise but spoiled. After a few minutes, he was worn out and so impatient that he jumped down from his horse, dying for water. The jugs (水罐) were almost empty. " I'm getting tired of dragging you through the forest looking for the hidden treasure. " said Bob.

" I would like you to remember the terms (条款) of our agreement, as well as your high payment. Mister Bob. " said Norbert, who was also terribly thirsty.

This made Bob even more impatient and thirsty. He spat on the ground, looked up at the sky, frowning.

" As long as you pay me the remaining half of my fee, I'm not likely to complain much beyond this point. " said the cowboy and he turned his eyes to the old wooden building containing the local bar.

"I would like a long tall drink of cold water first though. "Fatima, who knew that Bob would not find any water.

Suddenly, there came a dull roar(咆哮)and the strong wind lifted the dust from the ground and into the air. Quite a number of trees fell down with the four people's cry. Suddenly Norbert shouted at the top of his voice, " RUN!"

Then, they all ran away at the speed of light and stuck together, closing their eyes. After the storm, everyone slowly opened their eyes and looked at the others. They all began to smile because they found that no one got injured. Bob was touched by the scene, his heart bursting out the feeling of warmth in the blink of an eye, which was like the sun shining in winter. At the same time, the feeling of impatience faded away.

A Vacation with My Mother

I had an interesting childhood. It was filled with surprises and happiness , all because of my mother – loving, sweet, yet absent-minded(心不在焉的) and forgetful. One strange family trip we took when I was eleven tells a lot about her.

My two sets (两对) of grandparents lived in Colorado and North Dakota, and my parents decided to spend a few weeks driving to those states (洲) and seeing all the sights (风景) along the way. As the first day of our trip approached (到来), David, my eight-year-old brother, and I unwillingly (不愿意的) said good-bye to all of our friends. Who knew if we'd ever see them again? Finally, the moment of our departure (分离) arrived, and we loaded (带上) suitcases, books, games, camping equipment, and a tent into the car and bravely drove off. We bravely drove off again two hours later after we'd returned home to get the purse (钱包) and traveler's checks (支票) Mom had forgotten.

David and I were always a little nervous when using gas station bathrooms if Mom was driving while Dad slept: "You stand outside the door and play lookout (放哨) while I go, and I'll stand outside the door and play lookout while you go. " I had terrible pictures in my mind: "Honey, where are the kids?" "What?! Oh, Gosh … I thought they were being awfully (非常) quiet." We were never actually left behind in a strange city, but we weren't about to take any chances.

On the fourth or fifth night, we had trouble finding a hotel with a vacancy (空房). After driving in vain for some time, Mom suddenly got a great idea: Why didn't we find a house with a likely-looking backyard and ask if we could set up tent there? David and I became nervous. To our great relief, Dad turned down the idea. Mom never could understand our objections (反对). If a strange family showed up (出现) on her front doorstep, Mom would have been delighted (高兴的). She thinks everyone in the world is as nice as she is. We finally found a vacancy in the next town.

A Mother's Love

My mom only had one eye. I hated her. She was such an embarrassment. She cooked for students and teachers to support the family.

There was one day during elementary school (小学) when my mom came over to say hello to me. I was so embarrassed.

How could she do this to me? I ignored her, threw her a hateful look and ran out. The next day at school one of my classmates said, "Your mom only has one eye!"

I wanted to bury myself. I also wanted my mom to just disappear. I confronted (面对) her that day and said, "If you're only going to make me a laughing stock, why don't you just die?"

My mom did not respond. I didn't even stop to think for a second about what I had said, because I was full of anger. I took no notice of her feelings at all.

I wanted to be out of that house, and have nothing to do with her. So I studied really hard, and got a chance to go abroad for further education.

Then, I got married. I bought a house of my own. I had kids of my own. I was happy with my life, my kids and the comforts. Then one day, my mother came to visit me. She hadn't seen me in years and she didn't even meet her grandchildren.

When she stood by the door, my children laughed at her, and I shouted at her for coming over uninvited. I screamed at her, "How dare you come to my house and scare my children! GET OUT OF HERE! NOW!!!"

And to this, my mother quietly answered, "Oh, I'm so sorry. I may have gotten the wrong address." and she was soon out of sight.

One day, a letter regarding a school reunion (同学聚会) came to my house. So I lied to my wife that I was going on a business trip. After the reunion, I went to the old house just out of curiosity.

My neighbors said that she died. I did not shed a single tear. They handed me a letter that she had wanted me to have.

I'd just returned from a beautiful autumn early- morning walk with my dog. At the front door, I dug around in my pockets for the keys. When I discovered I didn't have them, I decided to return to the paths we'd taken. I would surely spot them in plain sight.

My little dog ran in circles with excitement for repeating of our just-finished outing, I spent an hour looking, brushing aside tall grasses, but the keys remained lost. I was beginning to get upset as I thought of the consequences of losing them, so I continued to retrace (重走) our steps, but without luck.

At home again, I pulled the spare key from its hiding place, let myself in the house, and fell on the couch in exhaustion. I began to make a list of the lost keys. The house key wasn't that important as I had an extra. The mail key was a big deal because getting a new one would take a lot of time. I also had a spare car key at home, but it was sensitive. But the key fob (小饰物) attached to the keys would be expensive to replace. It was an iron heart made by my grandfather which was precious beyond measure. For some reason, thinking of it being gone forever made my tears come to my eyes. I blamed myself for losing the keys and not being more careful. In my mind, I retraced my steps again and again trying to recall where it might be but finally gave up.

That night, it turned colder and we had a snowstorm, I enjoyed a comfort food dinner, played soft music, and settled into a peaceful evening. It had been peaceful until I heard my car alarm coming from the garage. I rushed to the car with the spare key and opened it, and then switched the key until the alarm stopped. I felt red-faced as I imagined my next door neighbors being annoyed. I went back in the house but it started again. I turned it off, went back inside, but the alarm blasted (轰鸣) again. I repeated the process.

Mum and Her Bank Account(银行账户)

My family had the tradition to sit down by the kitchen table every Saturday night to count out the money Dad had brought home.

"These are for the rent, and these for the groceries." Mum counted out and divided the big silver pieces.

"I'll need a notebook." That would be my sister Christine, my brother Nels or me.

After Mum put one or two coins to the side for the notebook, she said that was all we needed to buy for the week and we all relaxed a little. We didn't have to go downtown and draw money out of Mum's bank account, which could always give us such a warm and secure feeling for having enough to afford the life.

When Nels graduated from grammar school , he needed some money for high school. We sat by the table and I offered my" Little Bank" which was used for sudden emergencies such as the time when Christine broke her arm and had to see a doctor. I laid the box carefully in front of Mum. After counting out the money in the little bank and finding there was not enough, we all agreed not to go to the bank but to find some ways.

Nels volunteered to work in Dillon's grocery after school and Dad said he would give up smoking. Now there was enough money. We felt relieved.

So many things came out of the little bank that year: Christine's dress for the school play, Nel's operation ... Whatever happened , we always knew we still had the bank to depend on. We never used her bank account.

That was twenty years ago.

Last year, I sold my first story. When the money came I thought of Mum's bank account.

It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route (路线) through thick evergreen forest.

I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn't with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.

What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!

I quickly searched the crowd for the school's coach and asked him what had happened. "I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him," he explained uncomfortably. "I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide."

I bit back my frustration (懊恼). I knew the coach meant well — he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.

David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer — that's all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.

I have been a teacher for more than thirty years and Mr. Rowe is one of the best teachers I have ever worked with. He had so much from watching him.

He could perform miracles, like the one he performed with Steven in the fourth grade. Steven was one of the unhappiest kids I ever saw. He couldn't stand school. He didn't like being picked last for kickball. He didn't like the kids who raised their hands and knew all the answers, and most importantly, he didn't like himself.

The first day Steven walked into Mr. Rowe's classroom, he ignored the other students, looking angry and annoyed, and slid into his chair, knocking a couple of textbooks onto the floor.

Mr. Rowe walked over to him and touched Steven's shoulder, but Steven pulled away. Nevertheless, Mr. Rowe welcomed him: "Hi, Steven. I'm happy you are in my class. We are gonna have a great year." Steven looked around the room as if Mr. Rowe must be mistakes. No teacher in his right mind would want Steven to be part of his classroom.

So, while Mr. Rowe seemed cheerful and relaxed that day of school, it seemed like Steven was angry and confused.

That day after classes, Mr. Rowe chose Steven to pitch (投球) the kickball. "Hey, Steven," Mr. Rowe said, "You are good at pitching. Let me show you my secret trick. " Mr. Rowe taught Steven one of the tricks that not a single kid could did. Steven learned fast and did quite well! Everyone cheered for him!

After the kickball, Steven sat as closer to Mr. Rowe in classes as he could. When a question was asked, Steven lit up; he knew the answer! He raised his hands. When he answered the question, his voice shook. However, he got the answer right! He said, with Mr. Rowe, his days of the fourth grade promised wonderful.

New Year was just around the corner. I was second grade then, 7 years old. One day, on my way home from school, a lady gave me a piece of paper saying that the neighborhood was asking people to give New Year presents to those who needed them. When I got home, I showed my mother the paper and said that I wanted to take part in this plan. My mother thought this was a very good idea and encouraged me to spread kindness to others less fortunate than us. She said we would become "Neighborhood Angels (天使)".

Several days later, my mother said, "Get ready, and we will go." "Where are we going?" I asked my mother. "I will drive you to Boots Department Store to buy something you think would be suitable for a neighborhood present.", she replied. As we went into the store, my mother gave me £20 to pay for the present. Then she said, "I'll see you outside in the car." She left me alone to do the shopping. I was not used to buying things on my own, as I had always been with one of my parents before. Everything seemed very strange and confusing to me, but I carried on. I asked myself what I should buy and for whom. An idea quickly occurred to me. There was a poor boy called Ralph who lived in our neighborhood. I used to see him often without a jacket during the freezing winter months, so I decided, then and there, to buy him a warm jacket. I looked at many jackets and eventually chose a heavy blue one. The price was just within my spending limit. The assistant at the checkout asked, "Is this for someone?", as I paid for the jacket happily. I said it was, and she wished me a Happy New Year. I felt as if I were a real" Neighborhood Angel".

Paragraph 1:

That evening, my mother helped me pack the jacket in beautiful paper.
Paragraph 2:

My mother and I waited breathlessly for Ralph's front door to open and finally it opened.
