One fall, my wife Elli and I had a single goal to photograph polar bears. We were staying at a research camp outside “the polar bear capital of the world”-the town of Churchill in Manitoba, Canada.

Taking pictures of polar bears is amazing but also dangerous. Polar bears-like all wild animals-should be photographed from a safe distance. When I'm face to face with a polar bear, I like it to be through a camera with a telephoto lens. But sometimes, that is easier said than done. This was one of those times.

As Elli and I cooked dinner, a young male polar bear who was playing in a nearby lake sniffed, and smelled our garlic bread.

The hungry bear followed his nose to our camp, which was surrounded by a high wire fence. He pulled and bit the wire. He stood on his back legs and pushed at the wooden fence posts.

Terrified, Elli and I tried all the bear defense actions we knew. We yelled at the bear, hit pots hard, and fired blank shotgun shells into the air. Sometimes loud noises like these will scare bears off. Not this polar bear though-he just kept trying to tear down the fence with his massive paws(爪子).

I radioed the camp manager for help. He told me a helicopter was on its way, but it would be 30 minutes before it arrived. Making the best of this close encounter(相遇), I took some pictures of the bear.

Elli and I feared the fence wouldn't last through 30 more minutes of the bear's punishment. The camp manager suggested I use pepper spray. The spray burns the bears' eyes, but doesn't hurt them. So I approached our uninvited guest slowly and, through the fence, sprayed him in the face. With an angry roar(吼叫), the bear ran to the lake to wash his eyes.

Rescue in a Bottle

Curtis Whitson had rafted down the Arroyo Seco, a river in central California, several times before.

This year, Curtis Whitson knew the water-fall was coming. He figured he would get out of his raft into the shallow water, get down the rocks along ropes on either side of the falls, and continue on his way, as he had on a previous trip.

But this year was different. Heavy snow and spring rains had turned the usually manageable falls into something fierce. And this year, instead of his friends, Whitson's companions were his girlfriend, Krystal Ramirez and his 13-year-old son, Hunter. As the three of them approached the falls late in, the afternoon of the third day of their camping trip, Whitson could tell from the increasing roar of water in the narrowing canyon (峡谷) that they were in serious trouble. There was no way they'd be able to get down the rocks as planned.

"The water was just roaring through there with tremendous force," recalls Whitson, 45.

They had no smart phone service, and they hadn't seen a single person in the past three days. And Whitson knew that they'd be sharing the ground there with rattlesnakes and mountain lions.

As he was thinking what to do, Whitson hit on a bit of luck — he heard voices coming from the other side of the falls. He yelled, but the sound of the rushing water drowned him out.

"We have to get these people a message," Whitson thought.

He grabbed a stick and pulled out his pocketknife to carve "Help" in it. Then he tied a rope to it so the people would know it wasn't just any stick. He tried throwing it over the falls, but it floated away in the wrong direction.

"We've got to do something!" Whitson yelled to his son. "Have we got anything else?"

Then he spotted his water bottle. Whitson grabbed it and carved "Help!" on it. Ramirez also reminded him that he had a pen and paper in his backpack.

Whitson knew it was a slim hope. But he wrote "6-15 19:00 We are stuck here@ the waterfall. Get help please" and pushed the note into the bottle. This time, his throw over the waterfall was perfect.

"All right, that's all we can do," Whitson told Hunter.

One winter Sunday, my little sister, Colleen, and I built the greatest snowman ever. We gave him a carrot nose, beautiful hat, cozy scarf and gloves. He was a masterpiece (杰作).

The next morning when looking outside, we smiled lovingly at him over our meal. We gave him a high five as we passed by on our way to school. A lot of kids went past our house, so he was the hot topic at our school that morning. It was our pride!

The day dragged on until finally we could rush home. But as our yard came into sight, we saw something wrong. The snowman was gone! We only found a broken stick here, a torn glove there and balls of snow everywhere. Worst of all, the snowman's onceproud carrot nose lay limp (无力的) and halfeaten.

What had happened? We were both astonished and angry. But then, we were only kids, who wouldn't have anything take away our happiness. Actually we knew only one thing: Our snowman would rise again. And so we rebuilt him.

The next day we came home to find another mess on the front lawn (草坪). For the rest of the week, the destruction was repeated daily. Each afternoon we'd return to find our snowman had fallen apart, and then we built again.

By Saturday morning, we had a plan. We borrowed a really big bucket (水桶) from Mom, filled it with water and left it outside. The next morning, it was frozen solid. We packed snow all around the ice block as the base (底座) of the snowman. Then we built the other parts of it once again. The trap was set, and we waited for the snowman bullies (破坏者) to come.

A young and successful manager was traveling down a neighborhood street, going a bit too fast in his new Jaguar. He was watching for kids darting out (窜出 ) from between parked cars and slowed down when he thought he saw something. As his car passed, no children appeared. Instead, a brick hit violently into the Jag's side door! He stepped on the brakes and backed his Jag back to the spot where the brick had been thrown.

The angry driver then jumped out of the car, grabbed the nearest kid and pushed him up against a parked car shouting, "What was that all about and who are you? Just what the heck are you doing? That's a new car and that brick you threw is going to cost a lot of money. Why did you do it?"

The young boy was apologetic (愧疚的)."Please, mister...please, I'm sorry but I didn't know what else to do," he explained. "I threw the brick because no one else would stop..." With tears rolling down his face and off his chin, the youth pointed to a spot just around a parked car. "It's my brother," he said. "He rolled off the sidewalk and fell out of his wheelchair and I can't lift him up." Now sobbing, the boy asked the astonished manager, "Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair? It was deep into the night many years ago. The rain just came pouring down outside. An elderly man and his wife entered the 10bby (大厅)of a small hotel in Philadelphia, USA.

Trying to get out of the rain, the couple approached the front desk hoping to get a room to stay in for the night.

"Could you possibly give us a room here?" the husband asked.

The clerk, a friendly young man with a winning smile, looked at the couple and explained that there were three conferences in the town. "All of our rooms are taken," the clerk said. "But I can't send a nice couple like you out into the rain at one o'clock at night. Would you perhaps be willing to sleep in my room? It's not exactly a suite, but it will be good enough to make you comfortable for the night. "

When the couple declined, the young man pressed on. "Don't worry about me. I'll make out just fine," the clerk told them. So the couple agreed.

As he paid his bill the next morning, the elderly man said to the clerk, "You are the kind of manager who should be the boss of the best hotel. Maybe someday I'll build one for you. "

The clerk looked at them and smiled. The three of them had a good laugh. As they drove away, the elderly couple agreed that the helpful clerk was indeed exceptional, as finding people who are both friendly and helpful isn't easy.

Three years passed. The clerk had almost forgotten the thing when he received a letter from the elderly man. It recalled that stormy night, when he offered his kind help to the elderly couple. In the envelope, there was a round-trip ticket to New York, and a letter asking the young man to pay them a visit. The young man decided to set out immediately.

Daryl was a lorry driver and on his shortest way to Los Angeles there was a weather-beaten bridge he had to drive over day after day for almost 3 years.

Staying at home alone, his 66-year-old mum got into a strange habit of telling his sweet son the headline of the noon news on the phone. It was a daily routine for Daryl to pick up the cellphone at 12: 30 when he was about to drive away from the old shabby bridge. Unbelievable as it sounded, it was true, though.

The sun today was rising when Daryl's delivery truck reached the highway. This was the best time of day to drive, when the roads were wide open and empty. He felt sure he was going to make it to Los Angeles before nightfall, or he would have annoyed his boss. All looked like it was going to be a good day.

Two hours later, out of nowhere, he saw it, a large lump in the middle of the road. Daryl often passed dead animals on the roadside but he knew that this was something different. He slammed on his brakes and the truck screeched to a halt.

It turned out to be a girl. Daryl jumped down, raced forward and tried shaking her awake but she wouldn't move, so he lifted her up and carried her to the side of the road. At least she wouldn't be run over there.

Now she was someone else's problem. He had to make it to Los Angeles by nightfall and didn't have time to be a hero. He climbed back into his truck but as he looked in his mirror and saw the girl lying still by the side of the road, he was deep in thought, "What if she was smelt by wild animals around or knocked again by other drivers passing by?"

On March 16, 2020 my left leg was injured. At that time, I thought it was a simple injury, but a medical doctor later told me that it was a serious fracture(骨折) and that I would have to be in bed for three months. It was shocking for me. I'd never spent more than 8 hours in bed before.

I am a full-time social worker and have many projects that require my active involvement(参加). I hardly had time to visit my home, but my fractured leg stopped all things. I had to stay at home for a long time. It was bad and also good. It stopped all my work, but it also gave me an opportunity to spend time with myself and my family.

I was sad and worried. How would I spend three months in bed? Who would care for me? Early in my injury and before my operation, one of my friends offered his room in a rented house. I was grateful for his kind support. He did all things for me. I didn't have any other choices.

I realized in my mind that I should be positive and change my lifestyle according to the situation. It was not so simple or easy. I needed to be more focused and calm. I began to practice thinking alone, read books, create more poems and talk with friends.

There were so many ups and downs in my confidence. So many times negative thoughts bothered me. I felt very sad, but I often got support from my family and friends. During this difficult period, lots of good things also happened to me. I spent so much time with myself that I had plenty of opportunities to read some good books and improve myself, while receiving good care from my friends and family.

After the operation on my leg, I realized I needed additional care to recover, so I had to stay at Kindness Home, near my family.

As the mother of an eleven-year-old girl, I have read several books that tell parents how to bring up a girl to be beautiful, elegant, confident, and rich. However, I have always believed that girls need to be brave above all else, but this is easier said than done.

I still remember I couldn't see the screen directly when my daughter switched to the animal channel, which was broadcasting a show about snakes. I stood as far away from the TV as possible,  too scared to open my eyes. However, my little angel was not scared of the snakes. In fact, she watched the show with a keen interest. I was relieved that my daughter didn't get too many genetic phobias(遗传恐惧症). Even to this day, she is still obsessed with challenging herself with new things.

This year, I got a chance to study in Singapore for six months. After the novelty of the first few days had gone, I found myself missing my family. With the summer vacation approaching, my husband agreed to make good use of the fact that I was staying in Singapore. He brought our daughter out to visit me and to enjoy the new experience in a new country.

The reunion day finally came. My husband and my daughter arrived in the second week of July. I was so looking forward to seeing them. I had made many preparations for their visit. On the first day, I arranged for us to see Gardens by the Bay. When we walked out of the MRT station, we were amazed by the sight of the Super Trees. When my daughter saw lots of people walking on the Skyway, she couldn't help shouting excitedly that she wanted to have a try. The Skyway is a 22-meter-high suspension bridge from which you can enjoy a birds eye view. Last time I came here with my friends, I firmly rejected their repeated attempts to challenge me to go up there. It was like the day with the snakes all over again. But could I really reject my little angel?

Paragraph 1:

My daughter was waiting for my reply.

Paragraph 2:

Halfway across the bridge, I had to stop.

It was 8 a. m. Kathy, a 25-year-old nurse, had just finished a 12-hour night shifts at a hospital. She was tired, but glad to be sailing along highway to where she lived. Although the local government had posted a snow alert(预警), the calm grey sky convinced Kathy the drive would be safe. "I figured I'd be in bed in an hour, " she says.

Snow began when she was halfway home. Listening to the radio, Kathy learned the highway was closed because a tractor had slid off the road. She texted some friends and her mom, and tried not to sleep as she waited.

After a couple of hours, however, conditions worsened. Strong winds began rocking Kathy's car. She couldn't see anything outside, and snow was drifting up her doors. "It was, "she says, "a total whiteout and rows of cars and trucks. "

Late in the afternoon a police officer came and asked if she was in any difficulty. She said she was fine. She asked the police officer if there was any way to get past the trucks. "No, ma'am, " he answered. "You're not going anywhere. "

Once as it got dark, Kathy began to worry. She texted his brother Cris, telling him to drive snowmobiling buddy(雪地汽车)to get to the highway and find her.

As Cris rode slowly alongside the rows of cars and trucks, people would roll down their windows and ask for help. "I was the first person they'd seen in six hours. " He explained he was picking up his sister. He told them, "Nobody's coming and I can't take you. "

Near 10 p. m. Cris reached Kathy. He directed Kathy to pull her car onto the shoulder(紧急停车带)and asked her to get into his snowmobiling buddy.

As they headed for home, the fun started. About five kilometres into the journey, Cris made a mistake. What he thought was a shallow ditch(浅沟)turned out to be a deep trough(水槽). Instead of coming out the other side, they just kept going down. They were trapped. And feathery snow was over their heads.

Paragraph 1:

At that moment, they had to take action and get out.

Paragraph 2:

When Kathy arrived at her home, her mother was waiting for her.

On a cold windy day, a poor boy tried to pay his way through school by selling goods door to door. Wandering on the street, he was not a successful seller. What's worse, he found that he only had one dime(一角硬币) left. His empty stomach reminded him constantly that for days he hadn't eaten anything. He had no choice but to beg for a meal at the next house. Hesitantly he knocked at a door, thinking about what to say when it opened. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. "What can I do for you? " asked the young woman. The boy paused for a while "Would you please give me some. . . a drink of water? " the boy dare not to look directly into her eyes. She looked at the bony boy and thought he might need something to give him energy so she brought him a glass of milk. His head rising and small hands taking the cup, he drank it up slowly, and then asked, "How much do I owe you? " "You don't owe me anything, " she replied with a warm smile on her face. "My mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness. "

Deeply moved, he said sincerely, "Then I shall thank you from the bottom of my heart. " As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but it also increased his faith in God and the whole human race. As a matter of fact, he was about to give up and quit before that point. Years later the young woman became critically ill. However, the local doctors were unable to give the effective medical treatment. Finally they sent her to a hospital in the big city, where specialists can be called in to cure her rare disease. No matter how small you are, you can also give help or support to others. I didn't understand these words until I saw my grandfather weep that day.

I grew up in Southern California, and my family often went to Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, and Sea World. The highlight of those park visits for me was always the evening activities, when there would be fireworks.

As I grew older and more observant, I noticed that my grandfather would go missing just before the fireworks were scheduled to start and reappear shortly after they finished. I asked my mother about this and was told that Grandpa didn't like to hear the noise of the explosions. They reminded him of the war and his fellows who died in the war. So every time there was fireworks, he would go inside the bathrooms until they were done. I felt surprised because my grandfather was such a strong man.

One summer night, somewhere near my tenth birthday, my family and I exited a ride just in time to hear over the loudspeakers, "In only two minutes, the lights will be turned off around the Rivers of America, and Disneyland will present their fireworks in the skies over the park." At this moment, Grandpa was just in front of me, and when he heard the announcement, he started jogging ahead without a word to anyone. Without really thinking. It look off after him, against the orders of my mother, who repeatedly called after me to stay with the rest of the family. Grandpa, unaware that I was behind him, tried desperately to walkthrough the masses of people who were stopped in the street waiting for the show to begin.

As he tried to reach the restrooms, the first shell(烟花弹) broke in the skies above us. Grandpa paused and looked up, just looking as if he had been hit by a shot. And then he kept moving forward. As shell after shell burst overhead, he struggled forward, and almost fell over before he could sit onto a bench nearby.

This whole mess started about two months ago, when Jay felt pretty terrible and didn't feel like doing homework.

"Hi, Jay. How was your day? Do you have any homework?" Mom asked, when he came home from school. "Uh, I don't have any." he said. "I finished it at school." It was only a little lie, he thought. And besides, he told himself, he would just do his homework on the bus ride the next morning, so maybe it didn't even matter.

A few days later it happened again. When Mom asked about his homework, he pulled out his math worksheet but left the rest in his backpack. So easy! Before long, though, his backpack was growing heavy with unfinished homework. The problem was, as the backpack got heavier, so did his heart.

Jay feared seeing the look on his parents' faces when they found out. Walking in the door, he dropped his heavy backpack and walked into the kitchen. "Hi, Mom," he said. She hugged him and stood back. "Jay, I got an email from your teacher today. She said you lied about your homework. We need to talk."

"I hate them! I really hate them!" shouted Tom angrily.

Tara and Mike looked at their friend. They couldn't believe it. He was really furious!

"Andy is OK now," said Tara, trying to calm Tom down.

The three friends were in the park after school. They were talking about their friend Andy. Andy was the youngest in the class and today two bullies (欺凌者) pushed him against a locker and hurt him. Andy fell and cut his head. Now he has five stitches (缝针) in his forehead.

Their school was a nice, peaceful place until Brian and Mark arrived a few months ago. Brian and Mark were bullies and their favorite trouble spot was the locker room. That morning their victim was Andy, maybe because he was smaller and younger than everyone else in the class.

The teachers knew that there were some bullying incidents at school. But most kids didn't want to report the incidents. So bullying at their school wasn't an" official" problem.

During the incident Andy cut his head. As soon as the bullies saw the blood, they disappeared. Andy called for help and a teacher came and took him straight to the hospital. But Andy didn't tell the teacher about the bullies. When the head teacher asked him, he simply said, "I fell and cut my head"

"Brian and Mark must pay!" repeated Tom. He was walking around in circles and hitting the palm of his left hand with his right fist. "Can't you see? You are behaving like the bullies," Tara said sadly. Mike looked at Tom, too, and he knew Tom very well, Tom hated violence. "bullying is not cool, ”said Mike, waving his arms like he was dancing. "We have to tell someone about this," said Tara. "Andy was hurt."

But right now, Tom had other things on his mind. He not only hated the bullies but also hated violence. He was in a dilemma-he wanted to fight Brian and Mark but he didn't want to fight with the bullies by violence.

In a meeting room, I faced the judges seated behind a table holding my fate in their hands. These same judges had rejected me twice before. This was my last chance. Would it finally be my turn?

“Tell us, Jason,” one judge said, “why do you want to be Pistol Pete?” That summer I watched a cowboy football game. I was attracted by Pistol Pete. He was larger than our body. He could get everyone in the entire stadium on their feet shouting “Come on!” and make sure they had fun. Being the mascot (吉祥物) fit my personality. I loved getting attention—and a laugh. I didn't have the leg or the speed to play football. But no one could top me when it came to school spirit.

I entered a national high school mascot competition and finished twelfth. When tryouts (选拔) for Pistol Pete were announced during my first year at university, my academic adviser encouraged me to work hard at the mascot training. Then came the interview with the judges. The main question was, “Why do you want to be Pistol Pete?”

“Because I've been training for this all my life,” I told the judges.

The judges gathered the candidates to announce their decision. They'd selected two students. I could only watch as those two students jumped into the air.

I talked about my dream to my co-workers at my part-time job, and they were behind me 100 percent. When tryouts came the following spring, I was more than ready. Then I stepped before the judges again.

“You know me from last year,” I said. “You know how badly I want this. And you know how good I'd be.” I thought it was a done deal that I'd spend my senior year being Pistol Pete, living my dream.

"Class, please line up! Let's welcome Marti," said Ms. Baroni, our tae kwon do (跆拳道) teacher.

I was excited that my best friend Marti would be taking lessons, too.

Everyone said, "Hi." Marti went red in the face.

"You don't need to be shy here," I said to Marti in a quiet voice. "Everyone's really nice."

After warm-up exercises, Ms. Baroni divided everyone into groups. Even though I was a level above Marti, Ms. Baroni told us to practice together. "Jenna, why don't you show Marti some basic kicks?"

I said sure and showed her a front kick. Marti copied it. Her kick was as high as my shoulder. "Great job, Marti! Let me show you something," said Ms. Baroni. She then spent the next five minutes working with Marti. I leaned (倚靠) against the wall and watched Marti copy everything Ms. Baroni did. The more Marti did, the more praise she received from Ms. Baroni.

I practiced my form half-heartedly. "What if Marti became better than me? What if Marti became Ms. Baroni's favorite student?" I couldn't help thinking.

"Watch your form!"

"Who is Ms. Baroni speaking to?" I wondered. I turned and saw Ms. Baroni looking directly at me. Nothing could have been worse.

At the end of class, I took my bag and hurried outside to find my mom. I had planned to wait and say good-bye to Marti, but now I wanted to be alone. For the next several weeks, Marti continued to impress our teacher with her skills. Honestly, I felt a little jealous (忌妒的) of her. And as Marti turned into a star student, I became less and less excited about tae kwon do.

One day, as we walked down the hallway at school, Marti said, "Ms. Baroni thinks I'm ready to take the test for the next level."

I was surprised. "It's harder than you think. Two judges other than Ms. Baroni will give you points," I said.

Marti looked disappointed (失望的). "You don't think I'm good enough to take the test yet?"

Many people would feel surprised when they know I don't use a credit card. In fact, I did have a credit card. If it hadn't been for an embarrassing moment in a drugstore, I maybe still use one. But ever since then, I have formed a habit of keeping a record of the money I spent. And it was also from that moment that I learn to save.

It was about 8 years ago when I was staring out in my human resources career. One day I ran into a drugstore before work to buy some medicine. After J picked up the medicine that I wanted, I walked to wards the register and handed the cashier my credit card. She swiped. DECLINED, the register said. Of course I assumed it was a mistake. She swiped again. DECLINED. At this moment, my heart sank and panic soon set in. If any of you have ever experienced that you know that it's the worst feeling.

I was confused. I had just been paid a few days before, how could this be? I immediately walked over to my bank, which, thankfully, wasn't far away. The 5 minutes I had to wait were painful. When the clerk looked at my account the only information she was able to give me was the phone number of the lawyer who had requested the lien(扣押)on my account. I had no idea what alien was but when I finally did speak to the lawyer and asked what was going on, he told me, "They are from your school, St. John's University." I was even more confused. I didn't owe the school any money. I owed a small Fortune in student loans but those were being paid through Ed Financial. He, very rudely, told me that they were for parking tickets. Yes. I had owed about $3,000 in parking tickets that I somehow forgot about and somehow thought they would disappear. Well, here they were, five years later, holding me firmly.

It took me a long summer to pay that debt off. But when I finished paying it off, I felt I must work hard to pay off everything else.

Often, when he came to visit, my grandfather would bring me a present. These were never the sorts of things that other people brought, such as dolls, books or toys. My dolls and toys have been gone for more than half a century, but many of my grandfather's gifts are still with me. Once he brought me a little plastic cup. I looked inside, expecting to see something special. But there was only some loose soil in it, which made me disappointed. He smiled at me affectionately. Turning around, he picked up a little teapot from my dolls' tea set and took me to the kitchen where he filled the little cup with water. Back in the living room, he put it on the windowsill (窗台) and handed me the teapot. "If you promise to put some water in the cup every day, something may happen." he told me.

At that time, I was only five years old. This whole thing made no sense to me at all. I looked at him doubtfully and asked, "Do I have to water it every day? What will happen?" He nodded to me with encouragement, "Yes, every day, dear."

And so I promised. At first, curious to see what would happen, I did not mind doing this. But as the days went by and nothing changed, it got harder and harder to remember to put water in the cup. After a week, I asked my grandfather if it was time to stop yet. Shaking his head no, he said, "Every day." The second week was even harder, and I became regretful of my promise to put water in the cup. When my grandfather came again, I tried to give it back to him, but he refused to take it, saying simply the same words, "Every day." By the third week, I began to forget to put water in the cup during the day. Often, I would remember only after I had been put to bed and would have to get out of bed and water it in the dark. But I did not miss a single day.

Rivaldo was playing football from the age of 4. When he was 7, he joined a local football club. He attended the training regularly but never got a chance to play in matches. But the coach had faith in him. He told Rivaldo that he should focus on his training, and one day he would get the chance. Rivaldo had no other option but to continue training in the club. He was training very hard and focused on improving himself.

Even after two years in the club, he never played in a match. He was not even allowed to travel along with the team. One day their club had a charity match, where a famous footballer was a chief guest. While the team was planning to travel, one of the support staff who used to take care of kits (装备) got ill. So, they needed someone for this.

The coach thought this should be an opportunity for Rivaldo. So, he told him to travel with the team and take care of the kits. Other support staff objected to it, but he convinced them.

The team reached the stadium. There were a lot of crowds to witness the celebrity footballer. For Rivaldo, this is his first﹣time experience in the stadium. He was helping the other players with the kits for the pre﹣match training. The coach came for a chat with Rivaldo. He told Rivaldo, "You are playing today."

Rivaldo, for a moment, got frozen and asked him why. He said, "One of the players from the team got injured while training. So, we are short of players. We need someone to be in the field to make it 11. But I know you are more than that. So, go and prove yourself". There was resistance from the support staff. Luckily for Rivaldo, the coach, through the organizing committee, convinced Rivaldo's team management to allow him to play.
