This was repeated several times. Then the elephant asked the fly, "Why are you so restless and noisy? Why can't you stay for a while in one place? "

The fly answered, "I am attracted to whatever I see, hear or smell. My senses pull me constantly (不断地) in all directions and I cannot resist (忍住) them. What is your secret? How can you stay so calm and still?"

The elephant said, "My senses do not rule my attention. Whatever I do, I get involved in it. Now that I am eating, I am completely absorbed in eating.     Rebecca stretched her tired back. "That's the last seedling(种树苗), Pa. Have we planted enough?" Pa walked to the end of the row of cottonwood seedlings. "No," he said. "We have to plant trees all the way to that rock over there. We'll need about twenty more seedlings."

"I'll get the seedlings," offered Rebecca. She longed to cool her feet in the shallow river running through the cotton field. "You'd better let me go," teased her twin brother, William. "There are dangers all over this prairie(牧场). "You may both go," said Pa.

They went across the shallow river to a sandbar where small cottonwood seedlings grew. Gently, they pulled the seedlings from the sand. "There! That's twenty, with a few to spare." said Rebecca. "OK," said William. He led the way to the riverbank, then stopped.

"Look! There's the dugout(防空壕) we lived in when we moved here last year." He pointed to a hole in the grassy river bank. "Come on, let's go inside." "No," Rebecca said. "Then you start back." said William, handing the seedlings to Rebecca. I'll catch up." He ran to the dugout and stepped inside.

Rebecca tied the seedlings into her long apron(围裙) and began to walk. Suddenly she froze in her tracks. A huge prairie rattlesnake(响尾蛇) moved along the river bank. It stopped right in front of the dugout and lay still, coiled up on the warm sunny bank. "William!" Rebecca shouted. "Don't come out!"

"Huh?" William's face appeared at a tiny window beside the door of the dugout. Rebecca pointed toward the rattler. William's face paled when he saw the snake blocking the doorway. He turned desperate eyes toward Rebecca, then he glanced behind himself.

Rebecca's mind raced, trying to think of a way to get William out of there. An idea popped into her head. It was their only hope. It was risky, but it was the only hope. "Don't move," she said to William in a soft voice. "When I say NOW, you run out of there as fast as you can." Rebecca removed the skirt-like petticoat(衬裙) from beneath her dress, then dipped it into the river. She squeezed out some of the water, then climbed to the top of the bank, directly above the dugout's opening.

Paragraph 1:

"Get ready to run, William," she said, keeping an eye on the motionless snake.

Paragraph 2:

"Are you OK?" he asked, breathing heavily. Rebecca nodded.

It happened when Tom was only ten years old. That day he was at home with his elder sister Jane. Tom was doing his homework when he heard raised voices. At first he didn't think seriously about it at first, since it was always noisy downstairs, but he soon realized this time it was different.

"Quick! Quick! Remove the motorcycles from the shop." someone yelled.

Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When Tom opened the front door of their flat to check, a thick cloud of smoke greeted him. The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running and crying.

Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. They rushed out of the door and along the corridor (走廊) through the smoke.

They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Jane suddenly stopped. She turned around and headed back the way they came. Tom had no idea what she was doing, but he followed her.

Jane had suddenly remembered the lady in her 70s who lived next door to them, who they called Mackie. Jane began banging on Mackie's door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around them, Tom could see many of their neighbors—some still in their pyjamas (睡衣) —running for safety. The thought of fear crossed his mind.

"She would have run for safety like everyone else!" Tom cried. However, Jane refused to give up. "I know Mackie's still inside." She said she was familiar with Mackie's daily routine and was certain she would still be sleeping. She pounded against the door. "Go downstairs. Go now! Go!"

Once, when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus. Finally, there was only one family between us and the ticket counter.

This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve. You could tell they didn't have a lot of money.

Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants, and other acts they would see that night with their brothers or sisters in a low voice.

One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be highlight of their young lives. The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as could be. The mother was holding her husband's hand, looking up at him as if to say, "You are my knight in shining armor."

He was smiling and responding in pride, looking back at her as if to say, "You got that right." The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, "Please let me buy eight children's tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus."

The ticket lady gave the price. The man's wife let go of his hand, her head dropped, and his lips began to shake. The father leaned a little closer and asked, "How much did you say?"

The ticket lady again gave the price. The man didn't have enough money.

How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight children that he didn't have enough money to take them to the circus?

Actually we were not wealthy in any sense. So I understand how the kids would feel. I felt sorry for them.

On the morning of Jan 25, the very day of the Chinese Lunar New Year, I was unpleasantly woken up by a phone call. It was for my father. He picked it up, and I sensed from his shaky voice that something went wrong.

As soon as he hung up, my father turned to my mother and then me, saying, "It was the secretary. He called everyone to meet in the office right now because of the outbreak of the COVID-19."

"But dad, it's the Spring Festival!" How I wished my father could change his mind and stay with us. Wasn't the day meant for families to be together? My father, an official working in another town, seldom came back home. And was the virus serious enough to keep us apart? I was upset. To my great disappointment, father left home without hesitation, comforting me by saying that he would be back soon.

In the following days, news loaded with the fast spread of COVID-19 and the astonishing death toll scared everyone in the country. Father never returned home, only occasionally talking on the WeChat, over which he told us how he went from door to door, checking every family and persuading people to stay at home. I realized that my father was working in dangerous conditions under incredibly great burden. He always looked tired but determined. Every time I told him to take care of himself, he would smile and say, "Don't worry, son. Your father is as strong as a bull." At those moments, tears would well up in my eyes, and all my complaints would go away before I could say anything. The talk was brief but meant a lot to me.

I learned from the media that the medical staff, government officials, and almost everyone involved were working in the battle against the COVID-19. It was these guardian angels (守护天使) who, despite the possibility of getting infected themselves, were risking their life so that the rest of us could be safe. Among them was my father. He's protecting the people, me included.

Para 1: Then came bad news that my father was ill at hospital.

Para 2: Weeks later, my father came back home healthy.

Three boys and three girls were going to the beach. When they boarded the bus, they were carrying sandwiches and wine, dreaming of golden beaches. Suddenly, they noticed Vingo. He sat in front of them, eyes fixed upon a photo, completely in silence.

Deep into the night, the bus pulled into Howard Johnson's, a service area, and everybody got off except Vingo. The young people began to wonder about him. When they came back, one of the girls sat beside him and introduced herself. "Want some wine?" she said. He smiled and took a swig from the bottle. He thanked her and became silent again.

The next morning, they awoke outside another Howard Johnson's, and this time Vingo went in. The girl insisted that he join them. He ordered black coffee and some cookies. When they returned, the girl sat with Vingo again. After a while, slowly and painfully, he began his story. He had been in prison for the past four years, and now he was going home.

"Are you married?"

"I don't know."

"You don't know?" she said.

"Well, when I was in prison I wrote to my wife," he said, "I told her that I was going to be away for a long time, and that if she couldn't stand it, if the kids kept asking questions, and if it hurt her too much, she could just forget me. I'd understand. 'Get a new guy.' I said. She's a wonderful woman. I told her she didn't have to write me. And she didn't. Not for three and a half years."

"And you're going home now, not knowing?"

"Yeah. Well, last week, when I was sure the parole (假释) was coming through, I wrote her again. We used to live in Brunswick, and there's a big oak (橡树) tree just as you come into town. I told her that if she didn't have a new man and if she'd take me back, she should put a yellow handkerchief on the tree, and I'd get off and come home.If she didn't want me, forget it — no handkerchief and I'd go on through."

"Wow," the girl exclaimed, "wow."

She told the others, and soon all of them were in it.

Surprises are beautiful because they come without waiting. It was not so true for Nancy though. She was sure her younger sister, Kate, was planning a surprise for her birthday. Opening the curtains of her bedroom window, she hungrily drank in the fresh morning air. Nancy was turning 30 today. "Keep calm. It's only your 30th birthday." she thought to herself, quickly glancing at the mirror and looking away. She never liked looking at the mirror. It always reminded her of what she had suffered. She didn't want to think of the past and all that it had done to her.

Over these years she had worked at different factories and cleaned the floors at big hotels where perfumed men and women floated easily. Ever since their parents died, her only goal was to educate Kate. Nancy didn't go to her dreamy university. Her emotions came running back to the present. Quickly, she wiped her tears and rushed to the door.

"A sister is a little bit of childhood that can never be lost." Kate was her dream, her hope, her happiness and her precious possession. She meant everything to her. Kate was so outstanding that she was admitted to Harvard University. And today, Nancy was sure Kate would surprise her with a gift like she did every year. Nancy imagined the freshly baked chocolate cake that would welcome her. Her tongue was eager to lick up the soft, brown cream and her teeth were ready to bite it. She heard the sound of Kate's footsteps coming towards her. She waited smiling.

It seemed like an endless wait. Finally, she heard her younger sister approaching her room. Her eyes lit up, steps turned into a spring and her heart was pounding. She sniffed the air to catch a breath of the chocolate cake but she couldn't. "Maybe it is not chocolate flavor this time." she imagined with pride. Her sister was a grown-up now. She could surprise her with something else.

A farmer grew some vegetables in his garden. One day his wife was ill and he had no money. He had to sell some cabbages and carrots in the market. The next morning he took two baskets of vegetables to town. But it was snowing hard that afternoon and there were few people in the street. When his vegetables were sold out, it was dark. He bought some medicine and hurried to his village.

On his way home he saw a person lying on the snow. He placed his baskets on the ground and was going to help the person to get up. At that time he found it was a dead man and there was much blood on his body. He was so afraid that he ran away quickly, without taking the baskets with him.

The next afternoon the farmer was sent to the police station. Having shown the baskets, an officer asked, "Are these yours?" "Yes, sir," the farmer answered timidly (胆怯地). "Have you killed the man?" "No, no, sir," the farmer said in a hurry. "When did you see the dead man?" "About seven last evening." "Did you see who killed the man?" "No, sir." A few years ago I worked in an international company that sold computer devices. I had to travel a lot over the country as a part of my work. I remember that I was at a stage of my life where I only cared about how to make more money.

On one of my trips, I came to the airport to take a bus to downtown, as usual. It was the same routine: get into the city, take the bus to the hotel, visit the customer, work late, take the bus back to the airport and fly back…That day, for some reasons, I decided to take the stairs down to a different exit, where I came across a beautiful garden I had never seen before. I waited there, enjoying the scenery. Finally the bus came.

Usually I always took the seat behind the driver. That day I sat down somewhere in the middle. A boy was seated next to me, carrying a lot of suitcases. Suddenly, he turned to me and gave me one of the most sincere smiles I had ever seen from a stranger. Warmly, he said, "hi, the perfect day in the perfect place, huh?"

I remember thinking to myself ﹣ this must be one of those typical people who is young and naive and just thinks everything is beautiful and easy. Why was he annoying me when I just wanted to enjoy the bus ride? But out of politeness, I replied, "Perfect! Did your parents pay for you to have some vacations on the beach?" "No, I'm not here for vacation, and I don't have parents," He shook his head, "I'm here because I want to achieve my biggest dream. I'm on the way to the army school where my grandfather studied a long time ago. "

On a freezing morning of December, two police officers were patrolling the streets. Suddenly, the walkie- talkie (对讲机) on Alan, one of the officers rang. "The cake shop near the City Museum" has reported burglary (窃案). Please rush to the scene immediately", said the electronic voice.

The two policemen quickly arrived at the shop, only to find that the scene showed no sign of crimes at all. Curiously, they checked the monitor and found that a thin woman broke open the window and climbed into the store at 5: 20 a.m. Instead of searching around, she walked straight into the storage room, stole cheese, chocolate, butter and other ingredients for a cake, and then ran away down the road.

Both policemen felt quite confused about her behavior. One of the shop assistants identified the thief as Clara, a single mother who lived nearby. She has an eight-year-old boy to take care of and lives in poverty.

Moments later, the two officers arrived at Clara's house. Bob, another officer, pulled out a gun and was about to break in. But Alan told him to put the gun away and knocked gently.

The door opened and out came a very thin woman. From the outline of her figure, Alan recognized that she was exactly the thief. The woman Clara, immediately understood the situation when she saw the two policemen. She buried her face in her hands and sat down on the floor.

At that very moment, a child's voice broke the silence, "Mom, is anyone coming for my birthday? Invite them in, please."

After hearing the boy's words, Clara stood up and begged in a low voice, "Officer, I did steal those things, but there's nothing else I could do. It's my baby's birthday, and I've got neither job nor money. Please don't take those things away. I've just used them to make him a cake."

When I was in school, I joined an undergraduate program to chat with specific patients and then discuss it with others. But I had no specific training in this, and introducing myself to strangers was not one of my natural talents.

On one special visit, I cautiously entered a darkened room to find an elderly man lying in the bed. There was no one else in the room, and I firstly thought he was sleeping. When I moved a little closer to the bed, I realized that he was very much awake, but also very confused and anxious. He desperately wanted to communicate something to others, but I couldn't understand what he was saying. He seemed weak, and I couldn't tell if he was in pain, or just scared. I knew nothing about this man's life or history, and at that time I felt totally helpless. He obviously didn't want me to leave, but I felt so lost and uncomfortable that I had to leave the room after only a couple of minutes.

The next time I was at the hospital, I was asked to make follow-up visits with the same list of patients. I expected my time with the confused man to be just as short as the last time if he was even still alive. It seemed pointless to prevent myself from trying to talk with someone who was so weak.

As I arrived at the room, the first thing I noticed was that the lights were on. His daughter was there chatting with him. He was sitting up in the bed and looked a bit better than before. I introduced myself to the daughter and explained to her that I had come by before. Addressing the patient, I then suggested that I was certain he didn't remember me at all.

Paragraph 1:

To my surprise, he corrected me immediately.

Paragraph 2:

After this visit, the words the old man said to me were always in my mind.

Arthur was messy. He didn't try to make messes, but he didn't try to clean up much, either. There were always small pieces of food on the table when he was done eating. His socks never made it into the hamper (洗衣篮). And he only picked up his toys when Mom threatened to throw them away. Most days, Mom followed Arthur around the house and cleaned up after him. She brushed the crumbs (碎屑) into her hand and threw them away after meals. She picked up his socks and made sure they got washed, dried and folded neatly before going back in the drawer. She often picked up his toys when he left them to do something else.

One day. Mom asked Arthur to pick up his toy trains. "Not right now," Arthur said. He was reading a comic book. The trains had been on the living room floor since the morning.

"You know what, Arthur? I'm not going to ask you again. I'm done cleaning today." And with that, Mom put her feet up on the sofa and picked up a book to read.

At dinner time, Arthur noticed that there was a big pile of crumbs at his place at the table. Mom's spot was nice and clean. Arthur didn't like the crumbs very much. After dinner, Arthur's feet felt cold. He went to his room and opened his drawer, but the drawer was empty. "Mom, where are my socks?" Arthur called.

"There weren't any socks in your hamper, so I didn't wash them," Mom said. Arthur felt unhappy. Now his feet would be cold, unless he wanted to wear dirty socks from the floor. He decided to stay barefoot.

When it was time for bed, Arthur said good night to Mom and turned to go upstairs. Arthur stepped right on his toy train in his bare feet. "Ouch!" cried Arthur. "That really hurt!"

The worst tourist in the world may be Nicholas Scottie of San Francisco. Once he flew from the US to his hometown in Italy. He had some troubles on his journey. The night before, he stayed up late to deal with some emails, so when he boarded the plane he decided to have a sleep. Hours later, he was woken up by some noise and he found the plane had landed.

As he thought he had arrived home, Mr. Scottie got off the plane. He thought he was in Rome. However, the truth was that the plane made a one-hour stop to get oil at John F. Kennedy International Airport of New York.

Mr. Scottie waited at the airport for some while, but nobody was there to meet him. He thought maybe they were held up by heavy traffic which was very common in Rome. He decided to give his family a phone call. Unfortunately, he found he had left his cell phone at the hotel in San Francisco. Therefore, he decided to go home by himself. While he was walking in the city, Mr. Scottie found that the old "Rome" had changed a lot. Many old buildings were replaced by high modern ones. He also found that many people spoke English instead of Italian and that many street signs were written in English. What made him most surprised was that drivers' awareness of traffic safety was improved and he hardly found any driver speeding on the road. All cars were driving in line. The condition was widely different from that in the past. He was feeling proud.

Mr. Scottie knew very little English, so he asked a policeman (in Italian) the way to the bus station. He happened to meet a policeman who was also born in Italy and answered him in the same language. Mr. Scottie thanked him, left, quickly found the bus station and got on a bus. He looked outside of the bus window.

A Special Appointment

Years ago I moved to Woodland Hills to take a job in a small hospital's emergency department. No one wanted to work on Christmas Eve, so the shift (轮班) went to me. I kissed my family goodbye and went off to spend the night in the hospital. It was a thankless job.

At 9 pm, the ambulance brought in a man in his 60s who was having a heart attack. His face was pale, and he was frightened. The whole night I did my best to save his life. Before I left in the morning to spend Christmas with my family, I stopped by to see how he was doing. It was still tough, but he had survived the night and was sleeping.

The following year I got Christmas Eve duty again. At 9 pm sharp, the ward clerk told me there was a couple who wanted to speak with me. When I approached them, the man introduced himself as Mr. Lee and said, "You probably don't remember me, but last Christmas Eve you saved my life. Thank you for the year you gave me." He and his wife hugged me, handed me a small gift, and left.

The following year a new doctor had joined the group, but I wanted to see if Mr. And Mrs. Lee would return. This time, I volunteered for the shift. I kept an eye on the door. Once again, at exactly 9 pm, the Lees appeared, carrying a warmly wrapped bundle. It was their new grandchild.

Mr. Lee, his family and I spent 13 Christmas Eves together. In the later years the staff all knew about the story and would work to give me time with him in the break room, where we spent a half-hour each Christmas Eve.

"Owwww!" Robert yelled, backing away from me." That hurt!"

"What do you mean? I just hit you with my jacket!" I said, laughing.

Robert was the smartest boy in my class, and I didn't mean to hurt him. Besides, it was just a lightweight jacket.

The next thing I knew, Robert was heading to the nurse's office. And I was being sent to the principal's office.

What would my parents say? How could a stupid jacket hurt anybody? Then it suddenly occurred to me that my brand-new yo-yo(悠悠球) was in my pocket. So I had hurt Robert not with my jacket, but with my yo-yo. As I crossed the courtyard to the principal's office, I prayed," Please don't let Robert be hurt too badly. And please don't let Mr. Sinclair call my mom." Then I reached the principal's office.

"What happened, Julie?" Mr. Sinclair asked.

"We were playing outside... and... I hit Robert on the shoulder with my jacket. I... um... I guess I had this in my pocket. "I opened my palm to show him the shiny red yo-yo I'd bought with my pocket money. "I'm sorry. I'm really sorry. I didn't mean to hurt him."

"I know you well enough to believe you. But Robert has a knot on his shoulder that's about the size of your yo-yo. His mother is very upset. She's taken him to the doctor.

My head hung so low. It nearly touched my knees. More than anything, I wanted to melt into a puddle and trickle away under the door.

"I'm sure you didn't mean to hurt anyone," Mr. Sinclair went on." But because Robert was injured, I have to send you home for the rest of the day. Please wait in the outer office until your mother comes to pick you up.

My eyes widened." Now I'm going to get it!" I thought. I had plenty of time to think while I waited for my mother. I was always trying to be the" perfect student". "What will happen now?" I wondered. I had never been in trouble at school before.

Going back to school in September is always cool. Seeing old friends and making new friends are really exciting.

Rebecca was an old friend of Sheila, her classmate. Sheila liked playing football, and Rebecca had the same hobby.

There was a new girl in the classroom. Her name was Mary Brown. Unlike the others in the class, Mary was very quiet. She always sat by herself during lunch. At playtime, she didn't ask anyone to play with her, and no one asked her to play with them either. Rebecca was thinking about going over to talk to her, but that was when they would be able to join a football team in the youth league. Rebecca was so busy that Mary was soon forgotten.

The teacher gave out some homework. It was a composition. Rebecca decided to write a piece about Fiona, which is a cat, a Christmas gift from her dad. As a result, everyone liked Rebecca's composition.

At lunchtime of the third day, Rebecca was about to talk to Mary when Sheila stopped her with an angry look towards the table where the new girl was sitting by herself. Rebecca walked away feeling so embarrassed.

She told her parents what had happened at school. Rebecca said, "I want to talk to a new friend, but I don't want to lose my old ones." Her father thought for a moment and asked, "Rebecca, what do you think courage means?" Rebecca replied, "Isn't that when our soldiers go to war to fight for us?" Her dad said, "Well, yes. That is one kind of courage. But to do something that you are afraid to do is a different kind of courage."

Rebecca's mum reached over, holding her daughter's hand, and said, "If Sheila is really your friend, she will understand and still be your friend. Just do what you want to do."

Often, when he came to visit, my grandfather would bring me a present. These were never the sorts of things that other people brought, such as dolls, books or toys. My dolls and toys have been gone for more than half a century, but many of my grandfather's gifts are still with me. Once he brought me a little plastic cup. I looked inside, expecting to see something special. But there was only some loose soil in it, which made me disappointed. He smiled at me affectionately. Turning around, he picked up a little teapot from my dolls' tea set and took me to the kitchen where he filled the little cup with water. Back in the living room, he put it on the windowsill(窗台) and handed me the teapot. "If you promise to put some water in the cup every day, something may happen." he told me.

At that time, I was only five years old. This whole thing made no sense to me at all. I looked at him doubtfully and asked, "Do I have to water it every day? What will happen?" He nodded to me with encouragement, "Yes, every day, dear."

And so I promised. At first, curious to see what would happen, I did not mind doing this. But as the days went by and nothing changed, it got harder and harder to remember to put water in the cup. After a week, I asked my grandfather if it was time to stop yet. Shaking his head no, he said, "Every day." The second week was even harder, and I became regretful of my promise to put water in the cup. When my grandfather came again, I tried to give it back to him, but he refused to take it, saying simply the same words, "Every day." By the third week, I began to forget to put water in the cup during the day. Often, I would remember only after I had been put to bed and would have to get out of bed and water it in the dark. But I did not miss a single day.
