On Sina Weibo, the issue of trash sorting in Shanghai has attracted more than 50,000 posts and 70 million views, but enforcement of the regulation has sparked mixed feelings among the public.

Some people praised Shanghai for being a role model to solve the trash problem, while others complained about the inconvenience the regulation had brought to their daily lives, and made jokes about sorting their trash.

One of the most popular jokes goes, "Think about pigs before sorting your trash—things pigs can eat go to kitchen waste, things pigs don't eat are residual waste, things pigs might die from while eating them are risky, and things that can be sold for money to buy a pig belong to recyclables."

Xiao Guiyu, deputy director of the Standing Committee of the Shanghai Municipal People's Congress, said, "Although it's a joke, it sums up the principle of trash sorting in a simple way that everyone can understand." As for the complaints about inconvenience, the legislator stressed that the new regulation is a law, and just like traffic regulations, people have to learn to obey it as long as they live in Shanghai.

There was once a man went out to look for a job. As he was passing his neighbour's house, an important piece of paper fell out of the man's pocket.

His neighbour happened to be looking out of the window. Seeing the piece of paper fall, he thought, “What a disgrace! That guy deliberately let that fall out of his pocket. He's trying to mess up the front of my house, and he's being sneaky about it, too!”

But instead of going out and saying something, the neighbour planned his revenge

That night, he took his wastepaper basket and went to the man's house. The first man also happened to be looking out of the window, and saw what happened. Later, when he was picking up the papers dumped on his porch, he found the important piece of paper he had lost. It was torn into dozens of pieces. He thought that his neighbour had not only picked his pocket, but had had the cheek to mess up his doorway with rubbish.

He didn't want to say anything . Rather, he started plotting his revenge. That night he phoned a farmer to make an order of ten pigs and a hundred ducks. He asked they be delivered to his neighbour's house.

Of course, the next day, his neighbour had quite a bit of trouble trying to rid himself of so many animals and their accompanying waste.

Sure that this had been a wicked trick pulled by his neighbour, as soon as the second man had gotten rid of the pigs and ducks, he again started planning his revenge.

    And so it went on.

They continued trying to get their own back on each other, and each time their acts of revenge got bigger and more ridiculous. The dropping of that single piece of paper ended up with a rock band, a fire siren, the driving of a lorry into a garden fence, the throwing of a hail of stones at windows, the firing of a canon, and finally the dropping of a bomb which destroyed both men's houses.

Holidays are not necessarily for fun or rest. Doing something meaningful can also gain special pleasure. When the final bell rang, the students were reminded that there was no school on Monday—the Labor Day. "Enjoy your extra day off," said the teacher to her class.

An extra day of fun suited Kayla just fine. She loved breaks. She wanted to go out to play with her friends. When the school bus dropped Kayla off, she ran into the house happily.

"How was school, Kayla?" asked her mom.

"It was great, Mom. I am excited about no school on Monday."

"You just started back to school two weeks ago. Already in need of a break, huh?" asked Kayla's mom with a laugh.

Kayla slept in the next morning. Saturday was her favorite day of the week. It rained most of the day, so Kayla enjoyed playing video games inside. On Sunday, her friends came over and they played basketball for several hours.

Then it was Labor Day, you know, the extra day off that Kayla was so looking forward to. But Kayla was awakened early that morning by her dad. He told Kayla that in honor of Labor Day, the family would be cleaning both inside and outside the house. Kayla couldn't believe it. This was a holiday. A day when she was supposed to be enjoying freshly squeezed lemonade while playing in her tree house. As Kayla wiped her eyes, she began to wonder if this was just a bad dream.

"Kayla, your breakfast is ready. We have a lot of work to do today. Let's get a move on, "said Kayla's mom. As she sat down at the kitchen table, Kayla asked her parents,

"Are you serious about working today? Isn't Labor Day a holiday?"

"Yes, Kayla. It is," replied her dad. "But your mom and I thought working hard today would make you appreciate why Labor Day was observed in the first place."

Steve was the most amazing person in all of Minneapolis, and he was my cousin. By the age of 19, Steve was a star baseball player at the University of Minnesota. I wanted to be exactly like him. So when Steve asked me to go with him on a spring fishing trip in northern Minnesota, I was excited!

After planning the trip, we gathered clothes and supplies, and began our great adventure. We reached the Superior National Forest in northern Minnesota by early evening. On our way to the campsite, Steve pointed to a small house faraway in one of the mountains, saying that it was the ranger station (护林站) where the forester worked.

Finally, after a long walk, we reached the campsite and set up the camp as the sun was setting. Steve knew all the tricks of an experienced wilderness camper. After we gathered enough wood from the forest, he started the campfire using only stone and steel — no matches. For supper we feasted on freeze-dried beef, wild rice and pea soup. I ate greedily after all that work.

Tired enough, we climbed into our sleeping bags early and talked about our plans for fishing the next day. We were still talking quietly when a sudden north wind picked up; the temperature dropped and it began to snow. Steve found a way to increase the temperature inside the tent. He dragged a log (原木) from the forest to the opposite side of the campfire. Then he wrapped aluminum foil (铝箔) around the log. The heat from the fire reflected off the foil and into the tent. Soon images of lake fish were filling my dreams.

The snow had stopped, but sometime later a powerful wind must have kicked up the flames of our dying fire. I was abruptly awakened by Steve. Our tent was on fire. Frightened, I ran out of the tent immediately. The tent collapsed (倒塌) with Steve inside. Without any thought of endangering myself, I reached into the burning tent and pulled him to the icy lake. Fortunately, we were not seriously hurt.

Paragraph l:

Later, as we stood by the burning tent to keep warm, we considered our difficult situation. ……

Suddenly, we heard a noise in the forest. ……

"How many players are required for playing the match? What does the goal keeper do…" Mack asked while watching a soccer match on television. These simple questions made his parents sense his interest in sports.

"Mom, I want a soccer uniform. I'll go out wearing it and have fun in playing soccer with my friends," he begged his mother. He is a naughty, disobedient (不顺从的) little boy. Whatever he desires, he demands that his parents purchase it in a split second.

"OK," said his mother. "Such uniforms are not generally available. We will get you one shortly, but you need to have patience."

Mack kept thinking about the uniform and imagining the joy of playing with his friends. The days were passing, but there was no response from his parents. He felt disappointed. He is a very stubborn and disobedient son who never tries to know the circumstances or gives up his idea. He kept thinking how to achieve his dream of having a soccer uniform as early as possible. Then he came up with a great idea — he could paint one of his uniforms while his mother was busy working. At first, he worried that his mother might discover and scold him. But finally, he made up his mind to paint.

One day, as usual, Mack's mother got a very full schedule and it would be a few hours before she could spare time to stay with him. She asked Mack to play with his toys until then. Wanting to keep his mother away for a few hours as well, Mack obeyed pleasantly.

In his room, Mack picked up one of his uniforms and started painting. He first drew a circle with the help of a bowl and then developed it into a soccer image (图像). During the whole process,he took care to avoid the spread of color onto the other side of the uniform. After quite a long time, he finished painting a colorful soccer showing the national flag on his school uniform. It was a remarkable piece of work.

Para.1:

There was no disturbance by Mack for a long time, which drew his mother's attention.

Para.2:

"It's OK," said the mother.

In my early forties, I was diagnosed with late stage breast cancer. As a non-smoker who ate the right foods and exercised daily, all I could think was, "Why me?" My great fear and anxiety of the long term treatment ahead restricted me from seeing a bright side.

A few months later, my neighbor Greg fell off a roof and was paralyzed (瘫痪) from the waist down. Only thirty at the time, he was an enthusiastic outdoors man, besides he had a six-week-old baby. I could only imagine his despair. In a matter of seconds, he went from being an active young man to being helpless. I thought about visiting him, but didn't know if he felt like seeing anybody. Worse, I didn't know what to say.

Later that fall, hoping to take advantage of the sunny and pleasant day, I decided to go for a short walk. But now the treatment had run out of the last of my energy. Depressed, I had turned around to go back home when Greg drove by honking (按喇叭) and waving as if he hadn't a care in the world. To say the least, I was shocked to see the disabled man had driven his car successfully.

Feeling guilty for not visiting sooner, I visited Greg's house the following weekend. Before I could ring the doorbell, I heard wheels rolling on the hard wooden floor. In a cheerful voice, Greg yelled, "Come on in!"

We sat down, and I worked up the courage to ask him how he was doing. He answered, "I'm not going to lie. At first, all I did was be in low spirits, making not only myself but everyone around me miserable. As far as I was concerned, my life was over, and nothing anyone said or did could change my mood, " Excited and proud, Greg couldn't help keeping speaking and told me all his story at last.

Baskin was a 20-year-old sophomore at the University of South Carolina whose parents ran small restaurant. As he was the only college student in his family, his family tried their best to support him. Baskin always worked as a waiter in the restaurant to lighten his parents' burdens. He was so hardworking that many customers praised his hospitable service. His parents also appreciated and trusted him a lot.

It was a busy night at the restaurant. After a few guests walked in and sat down, they ordered a bottle of the Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse 2001-a valuable wine worth almost €6,000.

Having to serve another table, Baskin then asked a workmate to fetch the bottle. However, since the employee was new, she accidentally took the wrong bottle of wine. Instead of the wine that was ordered by the customers, she served the Chateau Pichon Longueville Pomerol 2001, which cost about €5,000. As the bottles and names were similar, no one noticed the mistake.

Baskin didn't realize the mistake until the customers wanted to order a second bottle after finishing the first one. He checked the order quickly and understood what was wrong. He cleverly suggested they order a different one, without letting them know what had happened, which could give him time to think about how to solve the problem.

Everything seemed normal, but Baskin was lost in thought. "What should I do to solve this problem?" he asked himself. If he didn't tell the customers the mistake, he could keep the extra €1000 secretly. As he was also the cashier of the restaurant, no one would know what happened. €1000 was the tuition fee for the whole school year and his parents needn't work hard to earn money for him. Or he could use the money to buy his favorite laptop which his parents couldn't afford. This extra money was really a huge temptation to him. But in this way, he would lose his honesty and dignity.

Paragraph 1:

While he was struggling with his options, his father came over.

"Why she let out my secret? why she did that to me?" I vividly remembered that day when I was confused at the knowing looks which everyone gave me. That terrible experience was imprinted (铭刻) on my mind. I couldn't forgive the person with whom I had shared my secret. She lost all my trust and friendship.

Five years back, Sally was a new addition in our class. I don't know what but there was something sticky about her that attracted me towards her. She was the most friendly person I knew. We started as classmates but after a few months we were like best friends. We did homework together and dreamed of going to the same university one day. We hung out and went to the movies on weekends. That was a sweet time.

Nevertheless, I couldn't expect such an enormous betrayal from her. I didn't know what made me tell Sally about my personal life. I felt much regret to myself. She exaggerated (夸大) the matter, added her own spices to it and made it the hottest topic in school. It was like someone had stabbed a knife in my back. After she revealed my secret, everyone at school started laughing at me and gazing at me wherever I passed. I was like a pond in which someone had thrown a stone and it had been spilled up. It was the most embarrassing time I had gone through. Soon afterwards, I left school and shifted to another one, because I thought no one had the right to laugh at me. Sally called me many times but I didn't answer. My heart was broken because the person whom I trusted most cheated me.

I made efforts to remove the scar from my heart. I started a new life, leaving all the bad memories behind, because they made me a person who often thought about the past experiences. Five years later, with the life going on, I made new friends and seldom thought about the past.

The summers in my hometown of Desert Springs were exceptionally hot, and all that people wanted to do was nothing but swimming in the public pool. This also meant that the most coveted (令人垂涎的) summer job for a high school student was to be a swimming instructor. You got to spend the whole summer in the pool and it was really glamorous (有魅力的), too!

However, I did not get a job as a swimming instructor. I tried really hard—I'm a good swimmer and I practiced my interview answers for weeks beforehand, but the pool offered me a job as a lifeguard instead.

Being a lifeguard wasn't nearly as fun or glamorous as being a swimming instructor. Mostly, being a lifeguard meant sitting next to the pool, sweating in the hot sun, and making sure everyone obeyed the rules.

"Being a lifeguard is an important job," my dad kept reminding me, "and you have to be one of the best swimmers in the whole town. If someone gets hurt or in distress in the pool, it's your job to rescue them." I knew that, and I wanted to do well at such an important job, but I was still disappointed. No one at school next year would be impressed with a story of how I sat in a chair all summer and got sunburnt.

But finally I took the job anyway. Once I began work, I quickly learned that being a lifeguard was much more involved than I thought. With half of the town at the pool at any given time, there were a lot of people to keep an eye on.

I was also still jealous of the swimming instructors, who I could see every day from my seat in the lifeguard chair, which was almost eight feet tall to give me a good view and right by the side of the pool.

The swimming instructors always looked like they were having so much fun, giving their lessons and playing around during their breaks in the cool, inviting water.

One afternoon, midway through the summer, I was arguing with a group of elementary schoolers about the no running rule when the sound of a woman shouting caught my attention. "Carey! Carey!" I glanced around and saw a woman searching frantically (疯狂地) for something. Immediately, my eyes went to the pool.

It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West.

We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Uncle Paul, my dad's friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.

His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. "The day starts at dawn on my farm, " he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze(吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.

In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a horse ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn't going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. "Don't be late for supper," Uncle Paul cried, "and keep to the track so that you don't get lost!" "OK!" my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven(编织的) blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.

Old Jim was without doubt the best hair stylist I'd ever known. He designed every haircut so artistically that it would be an understatement (低估)to say the magics created by him were “beautiful”. But there was one strange thing about his shop: there was no mirror in it, so customers were kept in suspense (悬念)until they reached home.

I entered Old Jim's hairdresser's, sad and disappointed, having just been rejected a role in the school play. I was ordinary-looking and boring, and that's why they didn't want me — I was convinced. “I want to be beautiful,” I said to Old Jim, tears almost dropping. After having a haircut, I thanked him again and walked out through the door, his words remaining in my head: “There's magic in your new hair. Now start your journey to beauty.”

Sunlight dropped down through the overlapping leaves above my head as I walked on the street. I shook my head but didn't feel a difference. I could only slightly feel that something was different, like a little voice that had long been suppressed (抑制)that desired to be heard.

Suddenly, I heard someone calling out to me. “Susan! Susan” I turned around. It was Jennifer, the most popular girl in the whole school. “It really is you, Susan. You look great today!” 'Thanks.” Jennifer was everything I wanted to be. What a sweet victory to get such admiration from a girl like her! We had a conversation on school and parted at a crossing, where she turned left and I right.

As I walked, I could see a boy walking toward me. We went to the same school but hadn't talked to each other much. If it weren't for the new hair, I would have looked down and pretended not to see him. I had always been shy.

Paragraph 1:

But at that point, I intended to test out Old Jim*s magic.

Paragraph 2:

At the sight of home, I started to go faster, desperate to see my new hair in the mirror in my room.

Wrapping paper flew everywhere as Cali opened her gift. The box had a picture of a pretty girl. She was wearing white ice skates and turning around a frozen pond.

Cali looked up at her aunt and uncle with her big brown eyes. "Figure skates? Wow! How nice of you!

But," the little girl hesitated, "… but I don't know how to skate." She looked embarrassed. "Don't worry," said Aunt Lisa. "That's the fun part — learning how to do it!"

"That's right," said Uncle George. "We will take you to the ice  rink (冰场) and all go skating together."

"I don't know…" said Cali. She wasn't too sure she was going to be able to do it. Sometimes she had  a hard time learning new things. She looked again at the happy girl on the box. It did look like fun. Cali imagined herself moving and turning on the ice like a real figure skater. "Okay," she agreed. "Let's do it!"

The next day Cali went to the skating rink with her aunt and uncle. Her eyes twinkled and her face lit up with excitement as she looked at the other skaters around her. She sat down on the bench and slipped her feet into the skates. Holding the strings in her fingers, she could not figure out how to tie them up. "I don't know how to do it," she said. She felt sad that this was another thing she couldn't do.

"Let me show you." Her aunt bent down on one knee, explaining how to put the strings around the small hooks ( 钩 子 ). Then she tied them into a tight bow. "Now, you do the other skate yourself. I'll help you if you need it." Cali bent over the skate and did what her aunt had showed her. Her tongue stuck out of the side of her mouth as she paid attention. After a few tries, she worked out how to cross the strings around the hooks. Her aunt helped make sure the strings were nice and tight. "You did it!" smiled her aunt, patting Cali on the back.

Michael Todd wore the same clothes every day for the first three weeks of school. When the other kids began to notice that he was wearing the same black trousers and blue long-sleeve shirt day after day, Todd, a freshman at Preparatory High School in Memphis, was laughed at by everybody at school. However, there was little Toddy could do, for his mother just couldn't buy him new clothes.

Two of the kids were Garrett and Graham, a pair of football players. But over time, they realized that their hurtful words at Toddy felt like bullying(欺凌) and seemed to be slowly destroying Todd's pride.

Graham thought that he needed to do something, so he and Garrett made a plan.

One summer afternoon, when I was about eight years of age, I was looking at a beautiful rainbow that, bending from the sky, seemed to be losing itself in a thick wood about a quarter of a mile distant.

"Do you know, Gracie," said my brother, who was just recovering from a severe illness, weak and tired, "that if you should go to the end of the rainbow, you would find there precious treasures?"

"Is it truly so?" I asked.

"Truly so," answered my brother, with a smile but a very serious face.

Now, I was a simple-hearted child who believed everything that was told me; so, without another word, I rushed out toward the wood. My brother called after me as loudly as he was able to, but I did not take any notice of him.

I cared nothing for the wet grass—on and on I ran. I was so sure that I knew just where that rainbow ended. But when I reached the cedars(雪松林), the end of the rainbow was not there! Abruptly I saw it shining down among the trees a little farther off; so on and on I struggled, through the thick bushes, till I came within the sound of a stream. I reached the bank of the stream, and I could see it a little way off on the other side. I crossed the stream on a fallen tree, and still ran on, though my muscles were aching and my knees shaking.

Suddenly I met in my way a large porcupine(豪猪). I ran away from him as fast as my tired feet would carry me. In my fear and hurry I forgot to keep my eye on the rainbow, and when, at last, I remembered and looked for it, it was nowhere in sight!

When I saw that it was indeed gone, I burst into tears, for I had lost all my treasures, and had nothing but muddy feet and a wet and torn dress. So I set out for home

That day, I drove my son to his university, which was about two hours' drive from my home. The school didn't open that day in fact. My freshman son wanted to go to the university a few days earlier so that he could do some preparation work and most importantly, some research work that was related to his courses.

Early that morning, Marie, my wife and I, together with my son Eric started from our home at Calari. Eric was really excited, since he would go to the university that he had been dreaming for since a child. We talked a lot and had a very happy journey. When we arrived at the university, we helped Eric settled in his dormitory, which was empty at the moment. The other students would not arrive until three days later, when the university was scheduled to open. Although felt a little lonely, Eric was happy and even excited for he would have enough time to launch his plan.

After a simple lunch, we had a short visit to the campus. There were old but wonderful buildings, which surely experienced time and weather. The big grasslands in the campus is lush and refreshing. Of course there were some modern facilities. The libraries, the gym and the playground were also attractive and encouraging. We also found a small store, where there were all kinds of items that students would need. I went into the store and bought some water in case we should need them on our way back home. The young man in the store was helpful and gave me his name card, obviously hoping I might need it.

We said goodbye to each other at about four and we directly headed home. At 11 o'clock that evening, I got a call from Eric. He said he suffered serious stomachache and might need to go to the doctor, but no one was around to ask for help. From his voice I could hear that he was really suffering. It seemed that he needed to go to the hospital right now. An ambulance may be too much, while it would took me two hours to get there. What could I do?

They don't mean it

Our family moved here from China two years ago, and we thought we were pretty well adjusted to American ways. This year my parents decided to give a party on Chinese New Year and invite some of our American friends.

The party went pretty well. Our guests were amazed at the flavor of all the special foods. After the dinner, they thanked us for showing them what a real Chinese New Year dinner was like.

"I loved the dishes. You and the girls must have spent hours doing all the work!" Mrs. O'Meara said to my mother.

"The girls helped with the cutting and I'm sorry they did such a terrible job." said Mother.

I heard a little gasp(倒吸气) from my friend Kim O'Meara, who stared wide-eyes at Mother. When I asked what the matter was, she told me she just didn't understand why my mother said so.

I had to laugh. "She doesn't mean it! It's just the way she talks."

Seeing her still confused look, I went on explaining, "In China, parents consider it good manners to deny praises about their children. Otherwise, it would be the same as bragging(自夸)."Kim seemed a little hesitant, but she nodded anyway.

That Easter, the O'Mearas invited our family for dinner. Mrs. O'Meara cooked a huge ham which we enjoyed a lot. As Mrs. O'Meara started cutting up the cake for dessert, Mother said, "I'm not sure if I can eat one more bite. That was the best ham I've ever tasted!"

"Aw, that ham was terrible," said Kim. "I bet you could do a lot better, Mrs. Yang."

Paragraph 1:

There was a stunned (震惊的) silence around the table.

Paragraph 2:

I finally knew how Kim had misunderstood what I had said.

I was 8 years old then. I had little need of luggage. But something about my grandma's old leather suitcase, which had been there beneath my bed, appealed to my imagination.

There was an elegance in the chestnut-brown leather of the suitcase. The cracked handle felt firm in my grip and made me feel like I was going to places. But I didn't use the old suitcase before that day.

It was a fall morning in our North Carolina town, and a fine mist dampened the fallen leaves. I was angry. My mother had slighted (冷落) me somehow, though now I have no idea what sparked my anger. I wanted to make her pay. I wanted to give her a taste of what life would be like without me. I decided to run away.

"Goodbye, Mom." I stood outside the kitchen door, suitcase firmly in hand. I was serious.

"Goodbye, Mom," I repeated twice more, cracking open the swinging door with my foot the final time to make sure she'd heard. At last, Mom emerged, wiping her hands on a dish towel. I lifted the suitcase a little just to make sure she didn't miss it.

"I'm leaving home," I said. I'd rehearsed for the expected reaction. The plan was to let her suffer guilt and beg for a minute or two, and then I would agree to stay.

"Did you pack a lunch?" Mom's question knocked me off balance. Where were the tears? The begging? The pleas? "I said I'm leaving," I said. "I'm running away. For Ever!" I drew out the dreaded words, sure they would crack her down.

Instead, she smiled. "Well, would you like me to fix you something? A sandwich? A bag of chips? I just made chocolate chip cookies. "

"I'm really going," I said.

"I can see that."

"Maybe a cookie." I hesitated, "All right, I'm off." As I stepped onto the front walk, fresh-baked chocolate chip tucked in my coat pocket, I looked back at our big yellow house.

Surely, she would follow me. I stared at the front door, waiting for it to fling open. I watched the lace curtains in the living room window for movement. But, no! Not even a flicker of a curtain! My mother didn't care if I ran away. Had she ever loved me at all?
